Bespoke Furniture & built-in cabinetry designfor a client’s home in Gallo Manor, Sandton.March-May 2011

The client had to two areas in their family room, which they deemed problematic. The first space, and highest on their list or priorities, was thespace and furniture set aside for their audio-visual equipment. The second, was an alcove inthe family room that served no real purpose, wasan eye-sore and would be best enjoyed, and ofmost use, if it could house a reading nook and adrinks cabinet.

Work began on assessing our client’s needs andwants in greater in detail.

Page 44: PORTFOLIO- Lauren v Rooyen

TV Cabinet Design:The first area to be addressed was the audio-visual area of the room. After analysis, it wasdecided that the key problems to be addressedwere the following:

1. Lack of storage & display space for theclients many ornaments.

2. An archway leading into the adjacent formallounge had been blocked off by a couch. Asolution was needed to conceal the back ofthe couch and alter the look so that itlooked less like an inconveniently positionedentryway and more like it served a functionand was part of the homes original design.

3. Much needed, storage space was neededfor the audio visual equipment. This spaceneeded to be tailor-made to house theclients existing equipment, yet be able toadjust to future changes in technology.

A design solution was presented to the clientalong with a preliminary budget. The solutionaddressed all aforementioned needs, however, was out of their budget range. Work began inbudget engineering the solution to come in onbudget without forfeiting any of the necessitiesand design features, much liked by our client.

The goal was achieved and exceeded theclient’s expectations, which resulted in happyclients, now able to enjoy their home to thefullest potential.

Liquor Cabinet Design:With the first area’s design done and dusted, work began in transforming the second area bymeans of a custom-designed liquor cabinet

The client’s first request was that the liquorcabinet be a stand-alone piece of furniture thatcould move with them should they wish torelocate.

With a very clear goal in mind, the cabinet wasdesigned to maintain long-term integrity, serveall their functional needs and be of a classicdesign,

After delivery of the cabinet to our client withinbudget, the once unused corner of the familyroom has been completely transformed intosomething functional and beautiful and made forextremely happy clients

Bespoke coffee table design for a client’shome in Blair Atholl Golf Estate, Lanseria.March 2012

A PJ Lounge is a great place for a family withtwin girls, 18months in age, to relax together. This is exactly the intended location for a coffeetable that we were requested to design for thefamily.

The brief was to provide them with a coffee tablewhere the little girls could sit at and colour in,read books, build puzzles etc. andsimultaneously serve the needs of an adult.

The coffee table was designed to have a slideout table surface for the little girls, a pull-outcabinet to house floor cushions for the childrento sit on, pull-out magazine rack for the adultsand storage drawers for any necessitates, be itchildren's toys or TV remotes etc.

In keeping with the room’s existing decor, thechosen finish on the table was Mahogany. Toadd a bit of personality and lift the heavy look ofthe dark wood, selected drawer fronts were cladin mirror that had been sandblasted with adecorative pattern.

To meet the client’s where they were at, Idesigned two variations of the coffee table forthem to choose from.

The first variation, described above, included allthe bells and whistles and made the most of thestorage potential.

The second variation had a slide-out table oncastors that was nested over an ottoman. Thisvariation is of a much simpler design andconstruction than the first and thus came in at amuch lower price point. Despite the simplerdesign, it was aesthetically pleasing and hadattractive features that the client was sold on.
