From The Publisher

Pogo, Peception & PortThis column is dedicated to apologizing for being partof the problem. I, like many others here in Port, oftendiscuss the problems we suffer. You know, empty storefronts, no large, anchor-type stores, the traffic and more.Include the lament that Main Street is a mile long butsplit into at least three distinct shopping areas making itdifficult for shoppers to walk and enjoy. Why, we even have a dockthat doesn’t allow docking. So, why are we here? More important, why do visitors fromManhattan, Connecticut, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Roslyn,Albertson, Mineola, The “Sides” (you know, Bay, Wood andSunny) all come to Port on any given day?Over the past several weeks, Jim Kallenberg, the new ExecutiveDirector of the Greater Port Washington Business ImprovementDistrict, better known as “The BID,” has been actually asking visitorsthat question. The answers are logical, complimentary and probablyshocking to the cynical locals – they like Port. This includes our waterfront, moorings, boating opportunities, our unique shops, thefriendliness, the restaurants and, more than you might imagine, men-tioned the Sands Point Preserve and other historical venues in the area.Does POGO always need to be right? Does the enemy have to be us?The next time we are ready to complain about something, let’s remember just how great Port is, and say so. This can do a lot for ourmerchants, restaurants and other local businesses.Port really is a great place to live, work, play and visit so, let’s remember Pogo and not be quite so negative.

Named for two distinguishedLong Island families, the Sandsand the Willets. The Sands lived inthe house from 1715 to 1845 andwere among the original settlers ofSands Point. They were mer-chants, farmers, and Patriot lead-ers – seven members of this fam-ily served in the AmericanRevolution. Colonel John Sands II,served with George Washington'sarmy. In 1845, the property was pur-chased by Edmund Willets, a promi-nent Quaker and abolitionist. TheSociety bought the Sands-WilletsHouse from Miss Eliza Willets in 1967.

The house has 18 rooms, 11 ofwhich are furnished and open to thepublic. The oldest portion of the house, the colonial kitchen, is believed to havebeen built by the Sands family around1735. Edmund Willets added theGreek-revival style addition to thehouse.

The Sands-Willets House is typicalof the prosperous Long Island farmhouses of the 18th and 19th centuries. It is one of the few buildings of its kindstill standing in Nassau County and the

only one open to the public in the Townof N. Hempstead. The Sands-WilletsHouse is a Village of Flower Hill HistoricLandmark and is also listed on theState and National Registers of HistoricPlaces.

The Cow Neck Peninsula Societymaintains the house as a museum andeducational center. Much work hasbeen done over the years to restoreand renovate the building – the c. 1735bricked-over Sands kitchen hearthwas uncovered, the high-ceiling 1840wing was refurbished and furnished. However, the preservation process is acontinuing one, demanding constantattention if this historical treasure is tocontinue to be an educationalresource.
