July, 2013 JIB SHEET

Commodore’s Column by Brett Oemichen

A big crowd of 105 celebrated the Hawaiian BBQ and Salmon Bake on June 8. Thanks to Teresa Forrest, Deanne Pedersen and Kathy Kubesh for serving up a feast fit for a king or should I say Kahuna. I noticed that several of our members had pictures taken next to the Big Kahuna and I’m sure they’ll remain keepsakes for a long time. The decorating creativ-ity of our event planners never ceases to amaze. To complete the Luau theme, our thanks to Steve and June Antione at the bar for keeping us refreshed with tasty Mai Tai’s. The

long list of volunteers who helped with this event are in Teresa’s article.

Cruises: The June South Sound Shenanigans Cruise just returned and we thank cruise di-rectors Beth and John Weaver, Kay and Wally Cathcart, and Sheila and Harold Brunstad

for the fun times and great food. Our docking skills were tested at Longbranch where six boats moored in a Mediterranean tie, stern-to the dock rather than along-side, due to restricted space in the marina. While

Med moorage is not difficult, the process does reinforce skills in physics, line handling and crew teamwork.

Speaking of cruises, check out the plans for the July Cruise which Fleet Captain Olav Pedersen will tell you more about in his column. Sue and I are looking forward to our first visit to Bellingham and Echo Bay on this

cruise.

Also, since we do not publish a Jib Sheet in August, here’s what we have planned for the Commodore’s Cruise September 5 through 16. This cruise will head for Canada and visit some pleasant but less-frequented ports such as Brentwood Bay, Cowichan, Ladysmith, and Rosario. Many of the runs between stops are short, ranging from 6 to 23 miles. We’re also planning to take in a performance at the Chemainus Dinner Theatre. More information will follow soon and you can take a look at the entire itinerary by visiting

the Cruise Schedule page on the Web site.

New Members: Congratulations to Scott and Stephanie Tompson, Ron Thomas and Kay Brownwood, Doug and Cher Sharp and Richard and Laura Lovas whom we have welcomed as new members recently. Our new-est members, who will get their second reading at the July board meeting, are mentioned in the New Mem-

bers article in this edition. Please welcome them all!

Nominations Committee: Our PLYC Nominations Committee, led by Past Commodore Harold Brunstad, has begun their work. Thanks to Rear Commodore Steve Hall and at-large members Sue Ryan and Karen Hasha-gen for contributing to the important task of recruiting new leaders for our club. Their efforts will culmi-nate in the Nomination of Officers meeting which has been re-scheduled for Friday, September 20 at the

Bay Club.

Crossing the Bar: We were saddened to hear that Lu Whitney crossed the bar on June 1. We extend our sympathies to her husband Bill, who served our club as commodore in 1996, and her family. A Celebration of Life for Lu will be held at the Wreck Room on Wednesday, July 10 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. As indicated in an earlier announcement, please respond to Peggy Kulm ([email protected]) no later than July 2 if you

plan to attend.

As you head out on the water for the summer boating season, please be safe and practice good seaman-

ship.

Wreck Room Highlights by Peggy Kulm, WR Scheduling & Events Coordinator

June was lots of fun. Appetizer Fridays continue to bring in a lot of our members. The much anticipated Salmon Bake and Honolulu BBQ event was a great success due to the efforts of Teresa Forrest and her amazing crew. Our Commodore's grill night combined with our Birthday Celebrations (Margaret Nelson and Del Jacobs - see photo) brought

great weather and lots of members and guests to the WR.

By the time you read this, we will have been treated to Brisket sandwiches by Larry and Bugsy Carter and a special Bean Soup

night by Karen Hills.

July has several interesting events on tap. In addition to Friday appetizers, we will be celebrating the Fourth of July by Grillin with the Commo-dore and remembering July birthdays on Saturday, July 6. It will be a BYO to grill with sides and dessert provided for $4. On Saturday, July 27 we will be open from 5 to 11 p.m. so those of you who want a great seat for the Festival by the Bay fire-works can have one in the comfort of your WR. A Taco Night with all the fixins is planned for $8. For both events, we request that you reserve your seat so we can

make sure there is enough food for all.

We added four new burgees this month in our exchange program: Pensacola YC, FL and the Curaçao Yacht Club, from Jack and Judy Welch; Hemingway International YC of Cuba from the travels of Joe and Cinda Langjahr; Solano Yacht Club in Suisun City, CA from Cam and Judy Perrotta; and the Royal Victoria YC, BC. If you are traveling this summer and think you might want to participate in the program, stop by the WR and pick up a PLYC burgee for exchange. Visitors to the club are always amazed at our huge and varied col-

lection.

A special note of thanks to Don Whipple for repairing our Trophy Case after the transformer burned out. The Whipples have gone cruising for the summer and our members are already missing the frequent pop-

corn snacks that always appeared when Don was present.

As always, I end with a thanks to our volunteers and a request to continue your support of the club by help-ing to fill the summer staffing needs. Judy Newell, the Carters, and Karen Hills responded to last month's request and stepped up to help with Friday appetizers. I could still use a few more volunteers to fill in on

an occasional Friday night.

June BBQ & Salmon Bake A Huge Success! by Teresa Forrest

Over 100 PLYC members and guests joined in and had a great time at the June BBQ and Salmon Bake Hono-lulu Style. Among the highlights were the fresh Copper River Salmon and fresh veggies, grilled to perfection by Chef David Jones, mouth watering appetizers and absolutely outstanding Mai Tais. The decorations transported us to Hawaii, as did Bernie Robinson and her two lovely dancers from the Port Ludlow Hawaiian Club, who entertained us with a medley of Polynesian dances. There was even a "Most Hawaiian Outfit"

contest. Winners Olav Pedersen and Kathy Gager won bottles of peach "Champagne."

Please show your appreciation to all the volunteers who worked so hard to bring you this fantastic event: Kathy Kubesh and Deanne Pederson were on the organizing and production team; Steve Hall, Peggy Kulm, Sharon Lynch, Dee and Ken McConnell, Olav Pedersen, Sherry Robinson, Judy Welch, Don and Anne Whip-ple, Diane Wilcox, who all did triple duty in helping set up, cook, sign in, serve, clean up and do the heavy lifting; as well as the bartenders June and Steve Antoine and Linnea McNair, cashier. All gave their time and labor well beyond expectations so don't hesitate to stop to shake their hand the next time you see

them.

The pictures included in this issue provide clear evidence of a great party. Thanks to Kathy Kubesh for all

the “evidence.”

Fleet Captain’s Column by Olav Pedersen

IT’S SUMMER TIME FOLKS! Yes, I realize the photo is a bit formal (for a luau, that is), but I just couldn’t resist. With the temperatures and weather we’ve been having lately,

you’ve just gotta get into da spirit of things.

This was the first time Deanne and I have sailed to the southern part of the Puget Sound and I assure you it won’t be our last. Okay, there wasn’t much in the way of ac-tual sailing going on. It was as eye-opening as the first time we visited the San Juans. Wow! I would like to extend my warmest thanks to all those who participated in the June cruise. The organizers, directors, assistants as well as all those PLYC members who pitched in when called upon. The weather could not have been better. All of the functions took place without a hitch, and what little rain we had took place in between

those functions. And make sure you ask Steve Hall how to dock a boat in close quarters in Brownsville.

Well done sir!

The July Cruise will depart July 18 and return on the 25th. The marinas have been secured starting with La Connor and then moving to Bellingham. From Bellingham, cruisers will have the option of going to Echo Bay at Sucia and anchoring or going to Roche Harbor Marina. Either way, the quality of these two loca-tions can’t be beat. From Roche we will head back home via Oak Harbor. Please check the PLYC Web site for further details and registration. We look forward to another wonderful cruise with our fellow mem-

bers.

Don’t forget to visit the Cruise Schedule section of our Web site at www.plyc.us on a regular basis and

check for updates.

Immediate Past Commodore Column by Harold Brunstad

As immediate past commodore I head the committee responsible for nominating candi-dates for leadership positions in the club. If any members have suggestions for PLYC leadership positions please let me know. It helps if you discuss with these individuals their interests prior to giving me your suggestions. I have found working on the PLYC Board the last five years very rewarding and it reinforces my belief that this club contin-

ues to have dedicated and resourceful leaders.

We just came back from the June Cruise, “South Sound Shenanigans.” There were be-tween 16 and 19 of our boats per marina depending on location. The cruise started at Shilshole highlighted by our “breakfast in a bag” and ended at Brownsville around a fire

pit with Mariner Dogs and S’Mores. I would like to thank my wife Sheila, Wally and Kay Cathcart, and Beth and John Weaver for leading this fun packed cruise. The participation and assistance of all of the cruisers was outstanding. We welcomed new cruisers Ron Thomas and Kay Brownwood. The weather was great (it

rained at night or when we had nothing planned) and most importantly everyone made it home safely.

Additional highlights included: Chihuly glass viewing plus the LeMay Automobile Museum in Tacoma; a pork tenderloin BBQ with sides and desserts prepared by assigned “teams” from materials purchased at the Olympia Farmer’s Market; a wine tasting (drinking) in Longbranch arranged by John Weaver and provided by Trillium Creek Winery, followed by a salmon BBQ. I could not have done these various BBQs without my

trusted assistant Wally Cathcart.

These were just a few of the activities on land. Of course, a portion of our time was spent cruising on our boats. It is impossible to adequately describe the beauty we observed while cruising the South Sound. We are truly blessed to live in this boater’s paradise and I encourage boaters to take advantage of the oppor-

tunity to cruise with your fellow club members.

New Members – Welcome Aboard!

Mike and Judy Blair have enjoyed living in Port Ludlow for the past 10 years. Mike is the former superin-tendent of the Chimacum School District with 39 years in education. Judy is a retired second grade teach-

er. Together the Blairs have four children two of whom live in the Seattle area.

Mike and Judy owned a small boat while living in Kettle Falls exploring Lake Roosevelt and the Columbia River. They gave it to their kids when they moved to Port Ludlow thinking it might not do well in the

rougher, more unpredictable Puget Sound!

The Blairs volunteer with various community organizations including the East Jefferson Rotary, AAUW, and the Port Townsend and Olympic Peninsula Red Cross. They were sponsored for membership by Harold

Brunstad and BJ Luce.

Bill and Chris Dean moved to Port Ludlow from Bentwater, Texas outside Houston. They come from Chica-go and retired after three decades with Amoco Oil. The Deans have traveled extensively here and overseas

and enjoy skiing, golfing, scuba diving and boating.

They had a 23 foot powerboat on Lake Conroe in Texas and were deeply involved in the Bentwater Yacht Club where Bill served as commodore for six years and Chris as rear commodore for one. Bill has sailed off Cape Cod, the Chesapeake, Lake Michigan, the Strait of Georgia, and the San Juans. More recently, he’s

been racing on a J32 on Sequim Bay.

Bill and Chris have three daughters and six grandchildren in Port Townsend and Astoria. Being closer to family was the big motivation for moving to this area. Bill hopes to become an active sailing crewmember, and they both look forward to joining community, village and PLYC activities. The Deans were sponsored

for membership by Brett and Sue Oemichen and Judy Perrotta.

Sail Captain’s Column

By John Neesz

On Saturday, June 30 five PLYC sail and two power boats are scheduled to participate in our annual Jack and Jill Race / Cruise to Kingston. Look for the results in my next col-

umn.

Our Etchells fleet is half way through its Summer Series with five races completed. In the lead is Keta with Gringo 2.5 points behind and Bananas another 3.5 points back. With strong winds on June 27th the racing was extremely close with the first race a virtual tie and the second decided only a few seconds. Continued tight racing is expected as the

Summer Series is concluded on July 11 and July 25.

There are opportunities for interested individuals to join at least one of our Etchells

teams. Call me at 437-9605.

Reminder The Jib Sheet takes a vacation in August. Anyone with photos or articles may send them to the editor at any time for publication in the August issue. Highlights from the June 5, 2013 Board Meeting

New member application second readings for Richard and Laura Lovas, and Doug and Cheryl Sharp were approved. New member application first readings for Bill and Chris Dean, and Mike and Judy Blair were

approved.

Rear Commodore Steve Hall reported that Training Day evaluations were overall very positive and help-ful information was received for future training days. He says that the Change of Watch will be Satur-day, December 14 at the Bay Club and the entertainment by Michael and Leslie has been reserved. Shei-la Brunstad volunteered to assist. A committee will be formed within the next few months to plan the

details of the event.

Immediate Past Commodore Harold Brunstad reported that members of the Nominating Committee are

Rear Commodore Hall, At-large Members Sue Ryan and Karen Hashagen, and himself.

Sail Captain John Neesz stated that despite aggressive attempts at scheduling races, there are no races until the fall. He is hopeful that the June Jack and Jill race to Kingston will draw a good number of

boats.

WR Coordinator Peggy Kulm provided updates for June and July. There will be a Celebration of Life for

Lu Whitney, a longtime member, on July 10.

There are three new burgees in the WR: Club Nautico Internacional, Hemingway de La Habana from Joe and Cinda Langjahr Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba (CNIH of Cuba); Pensacola YC, FL; Cu-

racao Yacht Club, from Jack and Judy Welch; Expecting one from Royal YC of Victoria.
