Pop-up Blockers

A pop-up blocker is a program that prevents pop-ups from displaying in a user's web browser.

E-learning modules on the LMS are defaulted to open in a pop-up window, therefore it is important to note end users may be prompted to enable / allow pop-ups from the LMS depending upon their browser settings.

Below is details on how to enable the pop-up blocker settings on some of the more popular browsers and toolbars.

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer 8

Quick Method When a pop-up is blocked in Internet Explorer 8 you will see a yellow bar appear at the top of the

screen, as highlighted below:

A quick method of enabling pop-ups is to click on this yellow bar, which will present you with the

options below:

You can then choose to Temporarily Allow Pop-ups or Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site.

Modifying Settings

1. Open your Internet Explorer window 2. Click on Tools from the menu bar located at the top of the window 3. Under the Tools menu, select Pop-up Blocker then select Pop-up Blocker Settings

4. A new window will then open, in the field Address of website to allow type in the address of your LMS and click Add

5. Then click on Close to save your changes

Internet Explorer 9

Quick Method When a pop-up is blocked in Internet Explorer 9 you will see a bar appear at the bottom of the

screen, as shown below:

A quick method of enabling pop-ups is to click on Allow once to enable the pop-up in this instance,

or you can click on Options for this site which will present you with the options below:

You can then choose Always allow to allow pop-ups from this site in the future.

Microsoft Edge

Quick Method When a pop-up is blocked in Microsoft Edge you will see a bar appear at the bottom of the screen,

as shown below:

You can then choose Allow once to allows the pop-up in this instance, or Always allow to allow pop-

ups from this site going forward.

This is the only way to add sites to the allowed list in Microsoft Edge

Modifying Settings

Microsoft Edge does not allow you to add sites to the allowed list via the settings. When using the settings, you can only turn off the main control, we would not advise this and would advise you to use the quick method above.

Should you need to turn off the pop-up blocker you can do the following

1. Open your Microsoft Edge window 2. Click on the more icon in the top right hand corner and choose Settings

3. Scroll down and click on the View advanced settings button

4. You can then click on the switch for Block pop-ups to turn it off

Google Chrome

Quick Method

When a pop-up is blocked in Google chrome you will see the icon highlighted below in the address bar:

A quick method of allowing pop-ups is to click on this icon which will present you with the options below:

You can then choose the option for Always allow pop-ups from <URL>

You can then click on Finished and press the F5 key on your keyboard to reload the page, this will then display the pop-up which had previously been blocked.

Modifying Settings

1. Open a Google Chrome browser window 2. Click on the symbol of three rectangles to the right of the star at the top right hand corner:

3. Select Settings from the dropdown menu

4. A new tab will open, click on Show advanced settings at the bottom of the screen. 5. Click on Content settings under Privacy:

6. A new window will open, scroll down until you see the options for Pop-ups 7. Next click on the Manage Exceptions Button 8. Another window will open, type in the full address of your LMS in the first field and then

select Allow

9. You can then click on Finished to save your new settings.

Firefox

Quick Method

When a pop-up is blocked in Firefox you will see a yellow bar below the address bar:

A quick method of allowing pop-ups is to click on the Options button which will present you with the options below:

To always allow pop-ups for this site, click on Allow pop-up for <URL>

To only allow the pop-up in this instance, click on Show <URL>

Modifying Settings

1. Open Firefox

2. Click on the symbol of three rectangles on the top right hand corner:

3. Select Options from the dropdown menu:

4. This will open up all of the option for Firefox, click on the Content tab on the left hand side of the page, which will open the screen below:

5. Click on the Exceptions button next to Pop-ups. This will open the screen below, where you can enter the address of the website and then click on Allow to enable pop-ups for the site:

6. You can then click on Save Changes in the lower right hand corner to complete this change.

Safari

To unblock pop-ups on Safari, follow the steps below:

1. Open Safari

2. Click on Safari at the top of the screen and then choose Preferences

3. This will open the Preferences window and you will need to click on the Security tab

4. This will display the screen below, you can then untick the option for Block pop-up windows and close the window

5. Pop-ups will now be enabled

iPad

To unblock pop-ups on an iPad you will need to do the following:

1. Click on Settings

2. Scroll down and click on Safari to open the Safari settings

3. Scroll down to Block Pop-ups and switch it off (as shown in the image below)

4. When you then attempt to open a pop-up in Safari, you will be presented with the message below:

5. Click on Allow to open the pop-up window

iPhone

To unblock pop-ups on an iPhone you will need to do the following:

1. Click on Settings

2. Scroll down and click on Safari to open the Safari settings

3. Scroll down to Block Pop-ups and switch it off (as shown in the image below)

4. When you then attempt to open a pop-up in Safari, you will be presented with the message below:

Toolbars

A toolbar is a graphical user interface containing a strip of icons which give the user a constant visible reminder of an easy way to select certain functions. One of the functions include pop-up blockers.

Popular toolbars include Google, Yahoo or MSN and we have outlined how to adjust the pop-up blocker settings which can also prevent your E-learning from opening within the LMS.

Google Toolbar

Enable or disable the Pop-up blocker

1. Click Toolbar's spanner icon

2. On the Tools tab, select (or deselect) the 'Pop-up blocker' tick box 3. Click Save

Allow pop-ups

To allow pop-ups, just click Toolbar's Pop-up blocker button. The button's icon should change from

‘Pop-ups blocked' to 'Pop-ups allowed' . Once you allow pop-ups on a specific website, Pop-up blocker adds the website to an 'Allowed sites' whitelist.

View the 'Allowed sites' list

1. Click Toolbar's spanner icon 2. On the Tools tab, click the Edit link next to the 'Pop-up blocker' tick box

If you're still unable to open pop-ups after clicking the Pop-up blocker button, check that IE and your security software aren't preventing them from opening.

Reset the Pop-up blocker counter

Click the Pop-up blocker button's drop-down menu, then select Reset count.

MSN Toolbar

The MSN toolbar includes pop-up blocking. This is an example MSN toolbar:

To disable Pop-Up Blocking:

1. Click on the Down arrow to the right of the text to bring up the Menu:

2. Click on the Allow Pop-ups option.

To re-enable pop-up blocking, re-check the Allow Pop-ups option.

Yahoo Toolbar

The Yahoo Toolbar includes pop-up blocking. This is an example Yahoo Toolbar.

The following icon is the Pop-Up Blocker:

To disable Pop-Up Blocking:

1. Click on the Down arrow in the icon to bring up a menu:

2. Uncheck the Enable Pop-Up Blocker option.

To re-enable pop-up blocking, re-check the Enable Pop-Up Blocker option.
