    Situational Analysis

The elderly and disabled market has been chosen due to the availability of funding, grants and the niche market for which a product can bedeveloped. Within the UK a total of £11 billion is spent annually withinthe !ealth and "ersonal #ocial #ervices sectors. $rom this total £%& billionis spent on #ickness and 'isabilities providing an open market forproducts although with a large amount of competition. 'ue to the highcompetitiveness there will likely be a high barrier to the start(up of acompany in this area. This barrier could be overcome by cooperating withservices such as the )!# #upply *hain.

The )!# #upply *hain is an organisation managed by both the )!#+usiness #ervices uthority and '!-. This organisation accounts for £1.billion of the £/.0 billion spent by the )!# per annum. The )!# #upply*hain award 2 of its contracts to #345s which allows for a keyadvantage for securing a position within distribution in the UK.

nother barrier could be that of private companies supplying ease ofliving aids. Two of the top suppliers include essentialaids.com andabilitysuperstore.com, these two sites both provide online services topurchase products and have them delivered. $rom the e6isting products

listed below it5s clear that there is a large variety of products to supply theneeds within the elderly and disabled market and a large variationbetween the costs of these products.

-ooking at these e6isting products various ideas have been produced suchas a self(cleaning toilet, an automatic folding table and even an automaticpersonal cleaner. lthough it has been decided that from all of theseideas, the mechanical bottle(opener would be the most relevant productto develop. With similar products being the 73ulti(8rip 9pener: and the7;ar and +ottle 9pener: it is clear that despite these products being useful

there is still a gap in the market for a product that allows for easy openingof medicine bottles that can be used even with only one hand and minimalstrength ret from it. With the ?&1? census

stating that almost one in people living in the UK being a pensioner and even

the fact that there are also an estimated million people su=ering from arthritis.

With these two statistics showing how likely people are to be weak handed this

With the elderly and disables marketplace being open to alterations in the

political area it was essential to analyse this sector to see how the product will be

a=ected by any changes that may occur. To kick start this appliance agovernment grant or appropriate funding could be provided which can be

invested into development and advertisement of the product. 8lobally it is now

becoming essential to have a recyclable product and so when designing the

product it should be taken into consideration whether or not it can be recycled.

When producing this product it should be assured that it will uphold all given

With the bottle opener being far more advanced in terms of technology in

comparison to its competitors this is an important area to consider for

developing this product. The operation of the mechanisms to open the bottle

should be developed in the most simplistic manner possible to allow for both

easy manufacture and repairability. +oth electrical standards and patents should

be satis>ed to prevent any issues occurring when constructing the >nal product,it is also important to ensure the supply of materials is as cost e=ective as

possible. With these materials various manufacturing processes should be taken

into account thus ensuring that it will be the most e=ective procedure carried out
