Omya becomes exclusive AddiFlex supplier Swiss minerals company Omya has agreed a global distribution deal with Sweden’s biodegradable plastics firm Add-X Biotech to sell its AddiFlex additives on an exclusive basis. The products are used to make polyolefin prod- ucts biodegradable. AddiFlex can be used as a masterbatch addition for virgin or recycled polymers or in combination with natural materi- als such as calcium carbonate and wood fibres. The AddiFlex additives promote the oxidative breakdown of polymers into a lower molecular weight. It this state mineralization of the poly- mers – the conversion of polymers by micro- organisms into carbon dioxide, water and bio- mass – can occur. Omya manufactures calcium carbonate, fillers, extenders and coating pigments and also acts as a distributor for a variety of speciality minerals and chemicals from other sources. The compa- ny employs 5600 people in 100 locations across 30 countries. The past 12 months have seen Atofina Chemicals and Akzo Nobel Polymer Chemicals join as suppliers. The range of polymer additives available from the portal now includes: anti-block and slip agents, antiox- idants, anti-static agents, clarifiers, curatives, flame retardants, heat stabilizers, UV stabiliz- ers, lubricants, modifiers and peroxides. The site claims more than 2000 registered users and around 540 active customers. In early October the company introduced an enhanced Additives Wizard, which has been redesigned for ease and speed of use and com- bined with the Product Selector to provide a more powerful tool. The company says that an extensive information library is also now avail- able via the Additives Wizard. The most recent enhancement is the introduction of automatic indexing of documents stored in pdf format. This allows full and quick searching of all technical data sheets, brochures and other literature stored in pdf format on the site. Material safety data sheets have been excluded from the site search facility for security reasons, the company says. The company says that the MC-Balance enables processors to dose mas- terbatch or single additives gravimetrically at the machine throat at a relatively low capital cost. The new design combines the Movacolor dosing cylinder ® feeding system with new gravimetric controls to produce an accurate and practical unit costing less than 4000, according to the company. By dosing directly into the virgin material stream at the machine throat the need for both batch weighing and a mixer are elimi- nated. It also eliminates the need to convey mixed material to the machine. The unit is said to be suitable for use on injection moulding machines, extruders and blow moul- ders. In each case it delivers accurate dosing rates through continuous loss-in-weight measurements with closed-loop control of dosing speed, Movacolor says. Dosing rates from 5 g/h to 25 kg/h are possible, depending on the form and density of the material being dosed. Both instal- lation and set up are said to be easy. Colour changes are also claimed to be quick and easy. Movacolor says that a calibration procedure or weight check is not required when changing material or introducing a new masterbatch.
