33 american Polo PonieS Bound for china next Week

33 horses will be shipped from Mi-ami, Florida to Beijing, China next week. The horses have been col-lected since February and all 33 of

them will have been in quarantine at a very secure farm in Wellington for at least 30 days by the time they make their last 60 mile road trip to Miami In-ternational Airport. There they will board on South Korea Airlines and fly 36 hours with refueling in Alaska and South Korea before going to Beijing. The 33 horses were purchased in February by Mr. Su Rong, chief of operations of the Huntie Polo Club in Beijing. Su Rong, nicknamed “Big Su,” is a Mongolian film director from Beijing with a pas-sion for polo; he is well versed in the history of the Tang horse and the Xi’an Dynasty as well as Genghis Khan’s horse tactics in warfare. In April 2010 Su Rong came to Kentucky as part of the China Trade Commission of Kentucky

that brings people to the Horse Park twice a year, and there met Jorge Vasquez, manager of the Ken-tucky Polo Club, and Will Boland. Jorge and Will then played in the opening tournament of the Tang Polo Club in Beijing where Su Rong mentioned his desire to buy horses in the US, eventually con-tacting Jorge Vasquez earlier this year. Since February, Jorge and Will Boland found horses from beginner horses to medium goal and the horses were one by one collected and sent to the quarantine farm in Wellington. There they have been exercised as polo ponies do, about an hour daily, to keep them in shape while they have been fed pellets and as much hay as they wanted, basically fattening them up, so they could best weather the long trip to the far East. China will be their final destination as horses entering mainland China are not allowed to ever leave the country. We found the horses in really good condition yesterday when we took the pic-tures. Yesterday in the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup for the British Open at Cowdray Park, Les Lions defeated Thai Polo 17-10. Les Lions posted a similar huge score on their opening game against Loro Piana in the Queen’s Cup (12-3), only to lose to Zacara on the next game (8-12), and fall to 1870 in the quarterfinals (7-12). Today, Talandracas and Piaget are the last 2 teams to start in the Champion-ships. In the other game today, 0-1 La Golondrina will need a win over El Re-manso to stay in the tournament.

Due to continuous rain in Greenwich, the final for the Tommy B. Glynn Memo-rial Cup has been postponed. A re-schedule will be posted as soon as play can resume.
