What a year! We made it, thanks to the hard work done by the Board. The old library building has finally been deemed usable by the County and is now full of Christmas decorations and other sundries that need storage.

The tennis and pickleball courts are resurfaced. Next will be the shuffleboard courts. The new kitchen in the Boulevard Clubhouse has been completed, new flooring was installed and the walls have been painted.

The volunteers for the pool furniture have worked hard for our benefit. The new chairs and lounges are in place at the Challenger Pool and the furniture for the Boulevard Pool has been ordered. Proceeds from Dauber Diner are being used to re-upholster the furniture at the Challenger Patio.

We’ve had some wonderful evening events over the last few months with many more to come this spring. Please try to attend whenever you can.

H Rules and RegulationsGary Mohler

There has been a lot of discussion in the park recently about dogs. I thought it would be a good idea to inform our residents what the rules are. The actions of dogs and their owners is governed by Polk County Ordinances. Section 4-27 covers dogs that stray or run at large. Dogs are not permitted to stray or run at large in or on any street, sidewalk, park, public property or private property of another. Section 4-31-a-1 covers dogs (or cats) that continuously bark, whine, meows, cries or causes other objectionable noises.

If there are 2 incidents of 15 minutes or more between 6am and 9pm in a 14 day period, or 1 incident of 15 minutes or more between 9pm and 6am. Section 4-31-2 covers animals that disturb the peace by destroying property, soiling public or private property, injuring individuals or threatening to injure individuals.

Violating these ordinances is considered a nuisance violation and is subject to a $75 fine for a first violation, a second violation within 3 years carries a $175 fine and a third violation carries a $500 fine. There are other potential consequences, in addition, for a dog running at large, such as requiring an RFID chip at the owners expense, or having the dog altered at the owner’s expense, in addition to fines. Enforcement of these ordinances is by any law enforcement officer, which includes, but is not limited to the animal control officer. It does not mention Polo Park Board members as enforcing these ordinances. The first step should be to talk to the animal’s owner. We should all be respectful of our neighbors. If you feel that law enforcement involvement is required, their first step is to contact the complainant. Please document dates and times to assist law enforcement when they contact the owner. These ordinances (and more) can be found through links on the Polk county website https://library.municode.com/fl/polk_county/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=COOR_CH4ANFO

H Residents’ Photos, For New Neighbors (and old)Linda Bailey, 863-420-0825

The Photo Albums in Challenger Clubhouse contain photos of residents arranged alphabetically and by street. These albums need constant updating. We have many new residents who have not had pictures taken and some residents who have never had their picture added to the albums.

I would like to undertake a project to correct that! I am willing to visit each home, by appointment, to take pictures of every new resident and anyone who does not have a photo in the albums.

Just give me a call and we can set up a photo session. Thanks, Linda.

Attention all residents living single in your home! Several of us living in Polo Park have experienced single friends falling in their homes and laying on the floor for days before anyone finds them. We would like to know how many single residents would appreciate a “Good Morning!” call every morning, or you call us every morning, just so someone knows that you are well and moving around another day. Please give us a call if you’re interested in our “Polo Park Cares” program.

leave ANYONE out! There are two ways you can help us out. Either send an email to Cindy Ratliff (Veterans Committee Secretary) at [email protected] or leave a slip of paper in the mailbox at 405 Tivoli Park Dr. (east side of street), with the following information. Name, address, phone number, and in what branch of service you proudly served! We are grateful and proud of what you have done for us and our country, and we want to make sure we give the honor you are due.

H Clubhouse Availability Judy Berube, 863-424-3501

If you need to use one of the clubhouses for any activity or function, call Judy Berube, 863-424-3501 and leave a message or email her at [email protected]. Also, if you would like your activity or event posted on the sign board at the front of the park, let Judy know and it will be taken care of.

Our bylaws provide for the use of the clubhouses for private parties. At the May 2017 meeting, the Board approved the fee of $100.00 for private parties to help with the costs of maintaining the clubhouses. Notice of a private party will be posted on the door of the clubhouse during a private function. Please.......let’s have respect for our neighbors and their families who are having a private function. We’re sure you would want the same respect and consideration given to you. If there is someone from outside of Polo Park who wants to speak to the community, they should also call Judy Berube to make arrangements.

Anyone is welcome to join any activity at any time!

H Mah Jongg Tuesdays 9:00 am, B; Saturdays 9:00 am, CGinnie Thompson, 315-575-1242

Mah Jongg is a game that is commonly played by four players (but can be played by 2 or 3). Recently some of us have learned how to play Siamese with only 2 players. I’d be glad to pass along the written instructions if anyone is interested in playing that.

Mah jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance.

Studies show that Mah Jongg helps cure dementia, boosts cognitive awareness, and improves socialization skills. At the Polo Park Mah Jongg games, you can usually count on a few laughs too.

Mah Jongg is played every Saturday at the Challenger Clubhouse (unless otherwise noted) at 9:00 a.m. and every Tuesday at 9:00 at the Boulevard Clubhouse. Please check the calendar.

If you are interested in playing, please come and observe to see if it’s for you. If you are interested please email Ginnie Thompson at [email protected] with your email address and Ginnie will be glad to send you written instructions to familiarize you with the game. It takes a good three times at a minimum to enjoy the game, but it does keep your mind going.

H Polo Park Golf Committee Monday, February 3, 9:30 a.m. CGinnie Thompson, Golf Committee PR

If you are playing when the pro shop is not open, please pay in the “honor box” or come back when the pro shop is open to have your card punched. Your cooperation in this is greatly appreciated.

Don’t forget Wednesday is “Golf Clean UP Day”. We are always looking for, and welcoming volunteers every Wednesday at noon. Please meet at the pro shop at the Challenger Club House; bring gloves. Volunteering helps keep down your HOA fees. You don’t have to be a golfer to volunteer. Thanks to everyone who has helped in the past, and thanks to everyone coming out in the future.

PLEASE ARRIVE 15 MINUTES PRIOR TO ALL GOLF START TIMES TO GIVE THOSE IN CHARGE TIME TO COLLECT MONEY AND SET UP THE TEAMS. IN ADDITION, PLEASE BRING EXACT CHANGE, INCLUDING SINGLE DOLLAR BILLS (NO FIVES, TENS, OR TWENTIES ) AND QUARTERS. THIS WILL SPEED UP THE PROCESS, AND MAKE IT EASIER FOR THOSE IN CHARGE. THANK YOU!

Reminders:Couples Golf has changed its name to Funday Friday. Singles are now welcome, but please bear with us in the first few weeks of trying to figure out the logistics of how to set the teams up. Thanks to Ron Jerman for being such a math wiz and coming to our rescue the first night of having singles; it’s not an easy task. Plan on dinner and cards at the clubhouse afterwards. Fridays are the best.

Play Your Own Ball, was played Sunday, January 12, and will be held each month on the 2nd Sunday. No matter what your skill level you can win money.

In November, Sam Caincross had low men’s for the day of 32, and Marletta Frantel had low women’s score of 33.

We also had optional skins (where you are the lowest score on the hole of the field). Skins of $9/each were won by Marletta Frantel with a bird on hole #2, and Jerry Braden won a skin with a par on hole #9.

A “1” was pulled for the winning score, and the lucky winners with scores ending in “1” were Pat Pidkaminy, Vic Padovao, and Bonnie Bertrand.

When playing your own ball, the following rules should be followed:

All putts must be holed out, no gimmies

If hit into swamp, yard, or deemed unplayable, take one stroke penalty, moving ball 2 club lengths from where ball went in

Double par is maximum taken on any hole; note, hole #3 is par 3 for women (max 6), hole #3 is par 4 for men (max 8).

Women – hit from gold tees were available, red otherwise; exception being silver box on hole #8 is for women over 80 only.

Men hit from white, 80+ years old hit from gold/red

Sunday Funday, Golf Scramble, with different fun formats will be held the last Sunday of every month at 2:00 p.m.

Don’t forget Men’s Scrambles Tuesdays at 8:30 and Saturdays at 8:00. Men also play every day, with the exception of Sundays at 8:00. Stay after golf on Tuesday for hotdogs, sometimes even bratwurst is on the menu.

Ladies Scrambles are Tuesdays at 1:00, and Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:00.

Please note event times could change. If changes are required to be made due to availability, notifications will be posted on Nextdoor and Facebook.

Volunteer Opportunities

H Well of Hope Food Bank Carol Lien, 863-424-4380

The Chapel continues to support the Well of Hope Food Bank with financial donations – NOT FOOD. The need has become great for families and with the addition of seniors also needing help. Anyone interested in helping us support this with financial donations, see Mira Haack or contribute in the box at the Chapel. Thank you.

H Care Bears Gloria Gabrielse, 616-723-3976

The Care Bears program sends cards to residents during an illness or after a death. If you know of an illness or want to report a death, please contact Gloria. Thank you.

H Helping Hands William Lanzelotti, 863-420-9454

Helping Hands needs more volunteers since we have lost a few.

If you are in need of transportation to an appointment, please let me know as soon as possible. If we don’t know of an appointment until the day before, it’s sometimes difficult to find a driver.

H Golf Course Rangers Jim Godec, 270-559-9505

We are looking for any residents interested in volunteering to be rangers on the Polo Park Golf Course during the winter months (October thru March). This would involve about 4 to 6 hours of work per week. We need help in both the mornings and afternoons.

Mornings might include helping organize groups on the tee as they are processed by the Pro Shop personnel and taking care of carts. (Just handing out keys and helping load clubs.) Then, as time is available, checking the course.

Afternoons are mostly spent checking the course, assisting golfers and putting away the carts.

You will be surprised at how enjoyable it is to be a ranger! Give me a call if you want to be a ranger.

H Project Beds For Cats 2020 Fatima Delle Donne, 863-227-5281

Hello Furry Friends, and for the Snowbirds, Welcome Back. The PROJECT BEDS FOR CATS has been doing a lot of work and it will be celebrating 1 YEAR. I have no words to express all my gratitude to all of you that have been supporting this work.

It is that time of the year to replace our stock of supplies for 2020. I am still making BEDS and BLANKETS and this coming year, I am starting work on HOMEMADE SAFETY TOYS for the Cats and Kittens. Also, new Rescuers and Fosters in need of beds and blankets.

So, we are in need of the usual supplies:

● Flannel or Fleece by the yard● Poly-Fill for the beds● Batting for Cage Pads (I Quilt for safety when washed)

Wishing you the very best and good health for 2020.

George Geake provided a little comic relief with his acting out of The Phantom of the Opera, Darth Vader and Gene Kelly in “Singing in the Rain”. I can always count on him for a great deal of help.

Of course, the biggest round of applause goes to Jenell Kilgo and her group of cooks and helpers! The main course was delicious and all delivered to 213 people in 35 minutes. She is amazing and tireless!

The one complaint which has been reported to me, tone-deaf me, was the soloist for Ladyz and the Boyz. I understand that she was a little off, but the regular soloist for the band was just out of the hospital after major surgery and this young woman was a substitute. These things happen and I don’t think it made much of an impact on the evening.

As announced that night, we had over 65 volunteers who helped put this evening together. Some cooked, some made decorations, other came and decorated, some baked cupcakes, some made salad, some entertained, some set tables, some prepared the room, some cleaned up afterwards. It takes everyone doing their part. Thank you PPIPS members! We can always count on you!

I didn’t set out to write a book, but I almost did! All that being said, we plan to have our next dinner dance on Saturday, January 23, 2021, so make a note and get your tickets in December!

Thanks to all of you for trusting us with your attendance. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Come to PPIPS Meetings, usually the first Wednesday of the month, and find a place where you can help next year. The volunteers have the most fun!

Thank You, Polo Park

H Welcome Committee Rita Mrowka

Thank you to all who participated in the Cookie Social, all the wonderful bakers who donated many, many cookies, and the Committee who helped to make this a very special event!! We hope the new residents that attended felt the warm welcome we were trying to convey to all of them!

H Hooray for Hollywood Marion Geake

Our PPIPS Annual Dinner Dance has come and gone and was a huge success. We actually seated 213 people, definitely our largest dinner/dance participation ever. The enlarged dance floor makes it possible to have a group that large and still have room to dance!

If you were there, I hope you had a wonderful time. Thank you so much for coming. The event raised over $2600 which will go into the Activities Fund. The PPIPS Committee will make a recommendation as to where the funds will be allocated.

The decorations presented by Pat Hess and her Committee were beautiful. Linda Bailey did a wonderful job on the Photo Booth and also she and her committee frosted all of the cupcakes and they were delicious! Tish Mareski helped direct a group putting together the salads.

Our “Men at the Door” were entertaining as usual. This year they were costumed as Movie Directors and I think they looked great and acted out their parts. How fun was it to be escorted down the red carpet? They also served as waiters delivering salads, rolls and dessert. Thank you, Gary Mrowka, Jerry Braden, Dave Cochran, John Pafumi and Dave Murosky!
