Editorial 2010

Dear Friends of THE POLO CLUB SAINT-TROPEZ!

2010 will be a relevant year for our polo players:

We have purchased a plot of 14 hectares (34.6 acres) where two new polo fields will be laid out as well as a practice field for

“ stick & ball”. Thus adding to the two existing ones entirely sown with the specially developed grass cultivar “ Tifway 419”.

The Polo Club Saint-Tropez will therefore be able to pride itself on 4 polo fields and will be one of the most prestigious polo

clubs in Europe. This will allow us to accommodate more teams, to organize tournaments at an even higher level and to welcome

more spectators to our stands and our terrace bar.

But this is not all…together with the Municipality of Gassin we are studying the construction of suite-apartments to accommodate

polo players and horse riders, brand new fix boxes, an indoor manège, and a new training course.

Besides we are studying the improvement of our Restaurant, our Club House and our Boutique.

This new project under the mark of sustainable development and ecology will place our Club and the destination itself into one of

the best places for equestrian discipline in the world.

Regarding tournaments program in 2010 we will be playing 10 high goal polo tournaments, many exhibition matches ( including one

women tournament the “ Ladies' Amateur Cup”) and many practice games from April till September.

We usually play 150 matches per season ( including practice matches) involving more than 50 teams coming from all over the

world. This means more than 250 polo players and 1500 polo horses! The number of spectators is increasing proportionally with

an average of 600 viewers per tournament in high season.

If you want to learn or improve your equestrian skills come and visit us; Our Polo and Riding schools for beginners and confirmed

players are at your disposal.

For those foodies among you, there is news for your taste buds.

Our “La Table du Polo” restaurant and terrace will offer either for lunch or dinner traditional delicacies of the Italian cuisine

including homemade pasta. Every evening Piano Bar.

Passing by, do not hesitate to enter our boutique to purchase many articles branded Polo Club Saint-Tropez.

A MUST during your stay in the Côte d’Azur is the “Saturday@Polo“.

From the 3rd of April till the end of August every Saturday at 5pm a Happy Hour while watching a polo match will give you a chance

to get to know this sport while enjoying a drink with appetizers specially conceived by our Italian chefs.

Please read our magazine and, for the news, visit our blog http://www.blog-polo.com to acquire information about our tournaments,

the horse parades on the harbor of Saint-Tropez and in the village of Gassin, weekend packages “ Polo Fun & Relax”, polo

dinners and polo events in our events marquee.

Last but not least I would like to remind you that admission to the Club is free and that a big car parking is available.

A warm thank goes to all the Authorities, players, members, sponsors and partners who have supported our Club during these

last 12 years.

We will be waiting for you to welcoming you in our big polo Family!

The Haras de Gassin - Polo Club Saint-Tropez

has in the last 12 years experienced an amazing

progression in the area of renowned European

polo as well as the in the number of high level

tournaments. Today the club is established on 59.3

acres in the heart of the Bourrian countryside, is

considered a point of reference in all Europe, and

part of the circuit of the great French polo clubs:

Paris-Bagatelle, Deauville and Chantilly.

To guarantee the site's exceptional prospects, the

owner, Corinne Schuler, three years ago proposed

the Gassin council plans for an "Equestrian Centre"

with all the infrastructure necessary to obtain

international status either for Polo or Riding.

The Mayor of Gassin, Mr Yvon Zerbonne, and his

deputies and town councillors have been enchanted

with the proposal and support the realization of

the project which should grow up in the next

three years. At the end the site will provide a fitting

response to the present demands and will offer

modern infrastructures . 200 new horse boxes,

covered manège, a range of accommodations open

to polo players, polo professionals, teams staff and

all visitors who would like to live this "Universe"

The polo boutique and the restaurant will be also

refurbished and enlarged. On the sports side of

things two new polo fields will be made available

from this year with the purpose of welcoming

competitions of an increasingly high level (20 goals).

The carrying out of these plans will definitely rank

the Haras de Gassin- Polo Club Saint-Tropez among

"Who is Who" of polo clubs worldwide . The first

class facilities will certainly attract the attention of

new markets.

Come and visit us, we will be pleased to explain you

our project in detail.

Polo is certainly the world oldest team sport,

played on the steppes of central Asia, between

China and Mongolia, it dates back to 2500 years.

However the first signs of this activity, halfway

between sport and war, were found in Persia.

From the very beginning it was considered as a

noble sport played by the best warriors, then by

kings and princes…Darius 1°, King of Persia ( 522-

486 BC) was undoubtedly the first great polo player

in history. From Persia polo spread to Arabia and

Tibet where it was called “ pulu” which means “ root”

perhaps due to the willow from which the ball was

made of. Imported from the west by the Muslims and

from the east by the Chinese, polo finally reached

the immense land of India.

It was in Silchar, in the State of Malipur on the

Burmese border that British colonial tea planters

from Calcutta discovered polo around 1854. Some

years later, the port was exported to Europe by the

British cavalry regiments previously stationed in the

Indian Empire.

Le Polo, légende et actualité-The Polo, a legendary sport of today -

It’s the hour of the dawn. The sun rises slowly and

lights up the surrounding hills.

In the stables the horses are opening their eyes

in welcome to the grooms who bring them their

“breakfast” and clean their “rooms” and then lead them

out to “stretch their legs” on the training course.

Curiosité / Curiosity

Did you know that us polo ponies start playing matches as 6-year olds and that our career lasts till we are approximately sixteen? And after that? Then we are transferred to the polo school, being quieter we are perfect for beginners, and if we can’t manage it any more we “retire” in the paddocks.

We daily exercise our ponies for an average of 45 minutes. If there is no

match on in the afternoon we can gallop and canter but if there is, we limit

ourselves to walking or trotting so as not to tire the horses too much.

We ride in groups of 5, but a couple of times a week we exercise them

singly.

THIERRY CHAUVEAUX is the stable supervisor

of the Polo Club Saint-Tropez since its opening 12

years ago.

During high season his job begins at dawn and often

finishes at sunset! Among his many responsibilities

is maintaining relations with animal feeds and animal

care product suppliers, supervising the maintenance

of the horse boxes, regulating the monthly veterinary

surgeon’s visits, the twice-monthly visits of the

farrier and the yearly visit of the dentist, receiving

the ponies belonging to visiting teams and all the

relevant logistics as well as the supervision of the

“peticeros” (grooms) who look after the ponies

belonging to the Polo Club Saint-Tropez. Soon at

the Polo Club Saint-Tropez brand new equestrian

installations will be built. Specialized architects are

already working “behind the scenes” and Thierry is

taking care of the construction of 350 brand new

fix horse boxes and of the reconstruction of the

training course. Together with the Manager of the

equestrian centre , he is supervising the plans for the

construction of the indoor manège and of the boxes

for the riding school. Besides he cooperates with the

architects in supervising all the infrastructure plans

thanks to his long experience in his own field.

At the height of the season Thierry may supervise

a stable of as many as 350 horses, always with

Adeline his trusty assistant by his side.

Les Palefreniers - The Grooms -

The role of a groom is a key one in a polo club

and is a full-time job in high season. More than just a

job, it would have to be called a vocation.

A groom has a deep love for horses, he knows his

charges well and respects them.

He helps them and feeds them, he rears them and

listens to them. He is in close contact with them day

in day out behind the scenes and gets them ready

for the moment they walk on to the field aiming to

win their victories.

The relationship between man and horse varies

according to the way a man sees the animal:

The polo player sees his pony as an ally for attaining

to victory, the breeder as an investment, the child

as a playmate…., the groom sees him as a life’s

Today Argentina is the country where polo is plaid the most

in the whole world. Many traditions come therefore from this

country; among them the “MATE”, a tea made from MATE

leaves, a plant native to South America. Like the usual black

tea “yerba Mate” is dried, cut and crumbled. Traditionally

you drink this “tea” hot and in a special cup made from a

gourd, or wood, or even metal which can also be used to make

the “tea” as well as drink it.

The traditional Mate Kit can be purchased at our Club

Boutique

companion. The groom’s job is not limited to looking

after the horse as regards his food, his exercise

and “toilette”, a groom also is responsible for

the maintenance of the polo players’ and ponies’

polo equipment, so his job includes polishing

boots, cleaning and polishing saddles, applying

the bandages to the horse’s legs before a match,

getting the reins, the bridles and the mallets for the

game ready, and finally, before actually taking part in

the match, plaiting the horse’s tail to avoid it getting

caught in the mallets.

During the match the grooms wait around the field,

in readiness for the change of ponies (a change

after every game period “chukker”), but also for any

unforeseen circumstance that may arise. One of

the groom’s responsibilities is to administer first aid

before the vet arrives, should a horse hurt himself.

After the match the groom takes the horse for a

refreshing shower and after a good currying takes

him back to his box, where he gives him his evening

meal and then wishes him “good night”.

Le Maréchal-ferrantet le Dentiste

- The Farrier and The Dentist -

The Farrier sees all our horses a couple of times a

month. In high season up to 350 horses...

The farrier is a craftsman who exercises the craft of

farriery, in other words: looks after the horse’s shoes

and trims and balances the hooves.

Historically speaking the craft of farriery was practiced

by the blacksmith: the horse shoes used to be forged

on the spot and made to measure, according to the

horse’s needs.

These days the ample commercial availability of

ready-made horse shoes makes it unnecessary

to make them on the spot, but a farrier needs to

have at least a certain amount of competence in

the craft of forging iron to be able to alter the horse

shoes whether by the hot or cold method with the

traditional tools. The adaptation of the horse shoes

and the actual shoeing of the horse is not all there is

to the farrier’s craft, in fact, a very important part of

horse shoeing is the trimming and balancing, which

consists of cutting away the excess horn where the

hooves touch the ground.

The farrier works in close cooperation with the grooms

and the stable manager and with the vet with whom

he discuss any pathologies of the legs and joints.

The Dentist sees all our horses once a year. A horse’s

teeth grow approximately 2-3 mm per year until the

horse is 20 years old. Some teeth, having a stronger

structure or a higher growth rate compared to their

corresponding opposites get worn down less quickly

and so can cause irregularities in a horse’s dental

structure. This defect affects the normal movement

of the jaws and, having a detrimental effect on the

mastication, in turn bear upon the assimilation of

nourishment and the general health and condition of

the animal as a consequence. Many injuries, such as

dental or jaw fractures, as well as tooth decay, are

also set off by an abnormal wear and tear, which

affects the general health of the horse and its athletic

performance.

Les enfants sont les bienvenus au Club

- Our Club makes children welcome -

Children are our future and the future of our sport. The

greatest polo professionals started riding horses at

approximately 4 years old to take afterwards a mallet in

their hands, a polo ball and start learning the polo swing

Your children of any age are welcome at the Polo Club

Saint-Tropez, and may get more familiar with these

marvelous animals. They may also enjoy any of the

following: a ride on one of our ponies supervised by one

of the grooms; a tour of the playing fields in a gig; have a

riding or polo lesson.

But at the Polo Club there is also room for young ones to

run around in the open, to discover the magic of nature

and to have fun in the playground.

During many tournaments inflatable bouncy castles and

similar attractions will be set up for the kids.

The Polo Club Saint-Tropez is not only dedicated to the

game of polo: above anything else, it is a recognized

riding centre that boasts a polo school and a riding

school. Polo and riding equipment is available for

those who wish to try this sport.

The Polo School, under the supervision of JUAN

MARTIN GARCIA LABORDE, one of our two polo

managers, is open from April till September .

You can learn the basic principles of polo, as well as

your "stick & ball" skills, improve your "swing" and

any other basic moves of the sport. At the end of

the course, depending on the level achieved there is

also a small competition which participants find very

stimulating. A wooden horse is also available to learn

safely the swing with the mallet.

For further information you may contact

Juan Martin Garcia Laborde on

The Riding School is open all year round and boasts

the presence of a professional riding instructor,

CHRISTIAN LABORDE, who with his team is

dedicated to helping adults and children alike (the

school is open to children from 3 years of age and

upwards) to acquire this wonderful skill.

We have both hacking horses and riding school horses

in our well equipped stables.

Christian and his wife Carole take a special pride in the

children. Thanks to extensive agreements concluded

with local schools, you may often find young and very

young riders around. Once they have learned to walk,

trot, canter and gallop, they progress onto dressage,

show jumping or polo, should this be their desire.

For those who can already ride and would like to

experience a day immersed in the local countryside,

Christian organizes riding tours in the surrounding

hills, where peace and quiet reign supreme.

Les Polo Managers - The Polo Managers -

Polo Manager’s job starts several months before the

beginning of a tournament.

He has to organize the arrival of the teams first.

The polo manager is the person who liaises with

visiting teams, the home team, the professional or

amateur players, the person who decides on the

match schedule. Before the beginning of a tournament

he organizes the Team Patrons meeting, the polo

professionals meeting and the disciplinary committee

meeting. He looks after the tournament sequence and

the selection of the teams, plans and coordinates the

paperwork, the matches and the prize giving, manages

the timing of the chukkers, coordinates the goal

linesmen and umpires, decides which field to play on

as respects the time of day, the state of the field and

of the turf. The turf always needs to be in an excellent

condition, as smooth as possible, to safeguard the

well-being of the ponies and their riders.

Les Arbitres - The Umpires -

Every match is refereed by one or more umpires

depending on the level of competitiveness.

One umpire with a long history of association with

the Polo Club Saint-Tropez is ESTEBAN FERRARI.

Let’s get to know him better.

How old were you when you first got on a horse?

I was 4 years old when I first got on a horse, which is

of course absolutely normal in a place like Argentina,

especially since my family lived in the country.

For how long have you played polo and what was

your handicap at the end of your playing career?

I played as a professional for 10 years from the age

of 18, I was invited to play in Italy and in the USA. My

handicap is still +5.

How long does a professional polo career

usually last?

Except in rare cases from 18 to 35 years.

When and why did you decide to become an

umpire?

I had to abandon professional polo playing mainly

for family reasons. It was then I decided to become

an umpire.

What do you have to do to become an umpire?

Is there a federation or school that organizes

courses to become an umpire? Is there an

exam you have to pass to become one?

In Argentina the “Asociacion Argentina de Polo”

organizes courses. At the end of the course you

have to take two exams, one practical and one on

theory. Having passed these exams you become a

C category (low goal) umpire, then with a certain

amount of experience you move onto category B

(medium goal) and then to crown your career you

move on to category A (high goal). I progressed

from category C to A in just 4 years and can be

proud to be one of the few umpires in the world

to be called on to referee “el Abierto” ( the most

important polo tournament in the world played every

year in Buenos Aires) .

Is it possible to become an umpire if you have

not been a polo player?

Absolutely impossible. If you have never been a polo

player you certainly will not be accepted on to the

course. One entrance requirement is a handicap of

+4 and solid experience as a player in medium and

high goal tournaments.

In a nutshell, the three most important qualities

an umpire must have are:

Be in control of the match at all times,

Page 62: Polo Club saint Tropez - Lifestyle 2010

62 POLO CLUB SAINT-TROPEZ Lifestyle 2010

Impeccable conduct and absolute impartiality,

A lot of patience, especially when you are being insulted

by the player you have whistled at due to a foul.

Do you do this job all year round?

Yes, except in January, which is reserved as holiday

time and when I don’t even want to see a horse.

You have refereed several times at the Polo

Club Saint-Tropez.

What do you think of the club? Is it comparable

to one of the great Argentine clubs?

The Polo Club Saint-Tropez is spectacular, in a truly

unique location from the point of view of climate and

atmosphere and, last but not least, it is very well

managed. I have been very warmly welcomed here

from my very first assignment, and that is the reason

why I come back every summer. It is like winning a

trip to “Paradise”. Now that two other playing fields

will come available (to make a total of 4), this club

has everything to become the number one club

in Europe and one of the best in the world.

What do you think you will do when your career

as an umpire is over?

In the past I have worked as a real estate broker.

I think that my future lies there, however, I am

absolutely in love with politics and don’t want to rule

out becoming the mayor of my town where I am

now but a councillor.

Les Tribunes - The Stands -

Our stand facing polo field Number 1 seats up to

240 spectators and has easy access and a canopy.

It gives you a good view over the playing field and

thanks to a commentator , present during semi-

finals and finals of the tournaments, the rules of this

sport can be fully understood. Overlooking polo field

Number 2 there is a smaller stand seating up to 60

spectators.

Around the stands you can sit down in the grass, but

be careful: as the action develops the horses could

come very close and the ball can reach speeds of

120 km an hour!

When you play polo, you gallop. On the big field two

teams made up of four riders compete. The object of

the game is to score more points than the opposing

team by hitting a white plastic ball of about 8cm

(3.14 inches) diameter, weighing 100g (3.5 oz) with

a "Manau" bamboo mallet (taco) over the goal line.

This is marked by two goal posts about 3m (9.84 ft)

high and 7.5 m (24.6 ft) apart.

The polo field planted with “ Tifway 419” grass is

275m (300 yds) long and 180 m (160 yds) wide.

It is surrounded by wooden skirting that prevents the

ball leaving the field of play. Horses are allowed to

jump out from these wooden skirting.

To give you a better idea how big a polo field is, compare its size to:

› a football field used for international matches, which is

100-110 m (109 - 120 yds) long and 64-75m (70 - 82 yds)

wide. This means that

a polo field is 8 times bigger than a football field!

› A tennis court is 23.7 m (25.9 yds) long and 11m ( 12 yds)

wide. This means that

a polo field is 190 times bigger than a tennis court!

The grooms take the ponies, perfectly equipped, to

the field. The players, who are dressed according to

the international rules in white trousers, brown boots,

kneepads, helmet, goggles or glasses and holding

their "Manau" bamboo mallets, reach the centre of

the field. Four players to each team play against each

other for several periods (between 4 and 6 periods,

called chukkers) of 7.5 minutes each. The sounding

of a bell marks the end of each chukker. At the end of

each chukker the players change to fresh ponies.

Every player is assessed on his skill with a handicap

(hcp) which ranges from -2 for beginners to +10 for

an undisputed champion (very few may boast this

level of skill).

The aggregate hcp of the team’s players makes up

the team’s hcp. Should there be a match between

teams of different hcp’s, the team with the lower

handicap is given the difference in handicaps as

goals before the start of the game.

Ends are changed after each goal is scored, and thus

each team endeavours to score between the other’s

goal posts. There are tall goalposts at each end of

the field and there is no goal keeper. Behind the goal

post however, there is a linesman who decides if

the goal is valid. There is no horizontal bar between

the goal posts and thus no height limit for a goal to

count. It may pass as high as you like as long as it

goes between the posts. The ball may be hit from the

right or the left of one’s mount and in any direction.

The purpose is to pass the ball to one’s team mate

and direct it between the goal posts to score.

At the beginning of the game and after each goal

the ball is positioned in the centre of the field. The

players of the two teams line up in two parallel lines

and the umpire rolls the ball between the ponies’

legs. The many rules basically serve to avoid

accidents involving the players or their mounts and

have to be meticulously adhered to. One of the

most important rules is the “cut across” rule. For

no reason whatsoever may a player, not even of

the same team, cut across the path of a player in

possession of the ball. One or two umpires follow

the actions on the horse in the middle of the field.

Polo is a very egalitarian sport. It is, in fact one of the few sports in the world where men and women, professionals and amateurs battle side

by side on the same team for victory!

But who looks after the greens? Who waters the

grounds, fills in the holes and pushes back the clods

that inevitably remain before and after a match?

The green keepers, an army of general factotums

who when there is no game on, restore the grounds

and make them like new. The green keepers are the

ones that with the support of an agronomist, study

the best way of maintaining the turf healthy and

green and sufficiently soft, so that the ponies can’t

hurt themselves. Let’s not forget that the grounds of

the Polo Club Saint-Tropez are sown in Tifway 419, a

grass designed to withstand a horse of 400kg (nearly

882 lbs) to run at a speed of 55km (34.25miles) per

hour and suddenly stop without any hindrance to

his performance or hurting himself. The upkeep of

the polo fields is very intense during high season but

must be carefully done all year round to guarantee

the best preservation of the grass.

Tel : +39 02 85 50 16 33 – [email protected] des sponsors principaux du Polo Club Saint-Tropez sont Hublot et vicomte A. Our sponsors are the life blood of our club. They support our club and

contribute to the tournaments organization.

Thanks to their support we are able to offer the public great moments

of excitement, and to our players, who are the real stars of the show, a

variety of great prizes; limited edition watches by Hublot, sportswear by

Vicomte A., weekends in some of the most exclusive hotels in the world

by Luxury Travel Market, as well as in the four-star hotels of Saint-

Independent, helicopter trips by Aviaxess, sculptures of distinction by

Daum Art Gallery, bijous and cufflinks by La Piramide, boots by Alberto

Fasciani, objets d’art from House of Argentina and much more.

Please don’t forget that only in polo the tournament winner wins nothing

except the glory. The game is played for the victory itself and that is one

of the reasons why it is always played in a fair and correct manner. There

is no reason for bluffing, there is no foul play, just pure sportsmanship

and the wish to share the well-deserved moment of victory.

Our sponsors may either support us for one or more tournaments or for

an entire season. They may sign a contract for a limited-time partnership

or one for a presence of several consecutive years.

It can certainly be said that time punctuates

all our ways. What does time mean to you, as

CEO of one of the biggest watch producers in

the world?

Above all, I am passionate about it, and my passion

is also my profession. To have the both of them

together, is an immense privilege.

You say that whoever buys a watch costing

CHF 10,000 surely does not do so to tell the

time, but rather to add to a dream, to possess

a symbol of his status, or to be part of an elite

group. Why and when has the public at large

transformed an accessory like a watch into a

type of magical mascot?

These days you can tell the time (the primary

function of the watch) everywhere and anywhere - in

cars, telephones, TV, computers etc. It is therefore

obvious that people don’t buy a watch just to tell

the time, but for a host of other reasons. Reasons

range from the need to demonstrate one’s status or

power, for recognition, or quite simply for the love of

the arts, tradition, heritage or appreciation of beauty.

Swiss watchmakers have understood this perfectly,

and this is the reason for their monopoly in the luxury

time piece market.

The Hublot brand has been a sponsor of several

sports for years, such as sailing, yachting etc.

Why have you now chosen polo and why the

Polo Club Saint-Tropez?

We don’t sponsor sports for ourselves but for

our customers. In other words, we don’t follow a

sponsoring policy born from our brand name, but we

sponsor those sports that our customers participate

in, and for that reason the places they frequent. That

is the reason for the Polo Club Saint-Tropez or the

Monaco Yacht Club.

How do you relate to horses, or more generally

equestrian sports, and to polo in particular?

I simply love polo ponies. They are real thoroughbreds,

but also very docile and somewhat timorous. It’s this

apparent contradiction I find so fascinating in horses.

I feel that polo is the perfect fusion between man

and his most beautiful conquest, the horse, together

with man’s most ancient plaything, the ball.

You created a limited edition of the Big Bang

watch for the Polo Club Saint-Tropez. This

watch is rather costly, and so reserved for a

small minority. Are you thinking of creating a

more affordable version next (It would certainly

help those people who now feel it is an elitist

sport, to get to know polo) ?

Unfortunately we can’t really make cheaper watches;

it is not our mission and does not harmonize with our

working philosophy. Nobody would dream of asking

Ferrari to produce a more commercially viable,

economical version, built by robots. It would harm

the brand rather than enhance it. Our craftsmen and

master watchmakers, have chosen to hand make

watches to the highest specifications. So the costs

can’t really be reduced.

You have often said that you sleep only 4 hours

a night. If you could radically change the length

of a day, how many hours would you put on the

face of a clock?

I would rather radically change man’s need for sleep.

And if we needed only one hour of sleep a day to

dream and recharge our batteries, I would still leave

24 hours in a day.

“L’instinct chic” (stylish instinct) is your

catchphrase. How important do you evaluate

seizing the right moment?

Style comes naturally with Vicomte A., in a nutshell:

it is instinctive to us, not an elaborate put on,

sophisticated luxury. Our products aim to be

timelessly elegant.

Your brand focuses on quality and design but

also on very attractive packaging. Why is that?

Quality: Quality is an obsession with me. As a

prerequisite, our factories have been selected for

their knowledge and experience and the quality of

the raw materials they use. We at Vicomte A. tolerate

absolutely no compromise on quality.

Design: We have a young and talented design

team, who are perpetually creative.

Packaging: Our company’s colours and image

remain in people’s minds after buying our products.

It is a powerful brand vehicle.

Your ties are a success, and you have now

thrown yourself into the polo world, where the

competition with existing brands has been fierce

for a long time (Ralph Lauren, La Martina). A

very courageous choice. Why have you chosen

the polo related market?

It is part of the world of horses in which I have been

brought up. I come from a family of stud farmers.

My grandfather won the “Cheval d’Or” (the golden

horse) for breeding the best obstacle course horse.

What is more, I have been watching polo matches

since I was a child and these days I support my

brother Bertrand who plays for Palm Beach where

he lives. So it was completely natural for me to turn

to the world of polo.

What is your customer profile in two words?

International and elegant.

Why did you choose to sponsor the Polo Club

Saint- Tropez?

We started by sponsoring the hundredth anniversary

of Deauville, then Gstaad and Palm Beach;

Saint-Tropez is a consecration for us.

Saint- Tropez is influential on an international scale,

and the support our boutique in Rue Clemenceau

enjoys makes the venture as profitable as the sale of

our products at the Club shop. That’s for sure.

Which other niche sport markets are you

thinking of taking on in the near future?

As you will have understood, we are already involved

in equestrian sports with Rodrigo Pessoa as our

ambassador for international events of the Global

Tour. We have also had the opportunity to be a

privileged partner in the world of obstacle racing,

where Vicomte A. is the sponsor for the Gentleman

Rider challenge, as well as in sailing where we are

part of Marc Pajot and Mariska’s venture.

Then, we sponsor several teams of golf players as

well as lady golf players for the “Madame Figaro”

cup. Vicomte A. also has a presence in motor sport,

such as “Mans Classic” and “Tour de France Auto”.

If you had to choose a polo personality to

represent your brand, who would you choose?

Maybe a Frenchman who is establishing himself

such as Brieuc Rigaux, or a top Argentinean

polo player or even a jet set celebrity?

Brieuc Rigaux, of course. He has even been so kind

as to take part in our very first Deauville photo shoot

with Thibault Guillemin.

celebrate victory, to dance with friends. It’s time to

light up our pavilion, and yes: it’s party time!

The colour green is surely the most representative of our Club.Green reminds us of the exuberant natural vegetation surrounding our grounds, of our polo fields…besides green being practically synonymous with care for the environment. We are very sensitive to nature preservation and very attentive in saving the water we need to soak our fields which, being in Tifway, need less water than other kind of turf. And it is respect for our surrounding ecosystem that moves us to search out partners who are equally attentive to the protection of the environment.Respect for the environment means ensuring a better life to future generations. Four are the natural elements; Fire, Air, Earth and Water - Four our sponsors who actively contribute towards the protection and preservation of these essentials:

Fire: ILTI LUCEAir : AVIAXESSEarth : GIUGIAROWater : TECNOMAR

Let’s go to know them better...

ILTI (Import Lighting Technology Italy), an Italian

company founded in 1989, has experience in lighting

and innovative lighting source research.

From the very beginning our philosophy was to create

custom made high technology lighting solutions and

do ongoing research into new available sources such

as optical glass fibres, now used in many museums

to illuminate works of art and other artifacts so as

to avoid the damage previously caused by UV and

IR rays.

Our brand F.O.M. (Fibre Optic Museum) has been

selected to illuminate the Egyptian Museum of Turin

and Leonardo da Vinci’s Hammer Codex (presently

in the possession of Mr. Bill Gates).

To better respond to the demands of the market and

to continue to evolve the development of our lighting

department, ILTI has concluded a partnership with

the Politecnico of Turin and Milan (Lab. Indaco), the

European Institute of Design in Milan and last but

not least some well-known designers such as Ferdi

Giardini, collaborating in the design of lighting and

furniture products.

For twenty years ILTI has been producing a wide

variety of accessories and feeders for our products

and we have recently launched the ILTI LEDS, a

line of products conceived as a result of research

by our electronic and microchip division. These

LEDS produce a superior light, coupled with a long

product life and low energy consumption. Owing

to our dedication to the environment and continuing

research into new lighting solutions, ILTI has been

invited to join Philips’ Business Professional Lighting

Unit.

At present energy saving is the driving philosophy

behind all our products. Thanks to state-of-the-art

solar panels, our CO2 emissions are low and most

of ILTI’s products save energy.

Innovation is another driving force at ILTI; the ILTI

Research Lab (I.R.L.) is the heart of this lighting

engineering and design company, and it is from

this workshop in association with specialist partners

that all original solutions and prototypes are being

“switched on.”

Today ILTI LUCE is a leading international company

producing ultra-high technology lighting solutions of

up-to-the-minute innovative design.

AVIAXESS reaches new heights by publicly

announcing the launch of the signature CO2

Compensated helicopter hire in Europe.

According to the Stern Report on ecological and

climate change, CO2 emissions in aviation account

for 1,6% of total CO2 emissions. This percentage

is expected to rise to 2,5% in 2050.

Although helicopter traffic accounts for only 0.1%

of the total aviation emissions, our company,

AVIAXESS decided to embark on a voluntary

program to forestall this outcome. Our company

invests in the best carbon offset programs. By

means of AVIAXESS’ partnership with Mundi

Climate, a company that specializes in reducing

their customers’ contribution to climate change and

audited by Ademe and Veritas, we have adopted

a carbon neutral awareness policy (Mundi Climate

selects programs worldwide that have the approval

of the relevant local authorities).

Today, for the first time in the world of helicopter hire,

we are able to claim that our flights are 100% CO2

compensated.

As part of our commitment to innovation and

development, AVIAXESS was able to appraise (by

certified methods) the emissions generated by its

flights.

AVIAXESS can now confidently state that carbon

emissions generated by our helicopter flights have

been reduced and the residue totally compensated

for. Frederic Aguettant, AVIAXESS’ CEO, declares:

“The whole team at AVIAXESS, including myself, are

proud to be part of this carbon emission management

and offset scheme. Our company will continue its

policy of innovation and thus consolidate our position

as leader in the field of air traffic services.”

in 1923 by Archie Frazer-Nash, and has a great

tradition in the car manufacturing sector.

The name “Namir”, Arabic for tiger, sums up the

main features of this concept car: elegance and

power, lithe and aggressive of line. The “Namir”

was presented at the 79th International Motor Show

in Geneva. This is without a doubt a sportscar; a

between style, engineering, aesthetics and content.

all wrapped together into an uncompromising package of exquisitely

balanced proportions. The stunning contrast between its “tiger stripe”

accents at the rear and the sinuous front lines complement this supercar’s

performance. A top speed of 300 km/h (187 mph), acceleration from

0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, and acceleration from 0 to 200 km/h in

10.4 seconds make this the world’s fastest hybrid car.

The “Namir” is an environmentally friendly vehicle. The hybrid system

developed in association with Frazer-Nash combines a 814cc

endothermic rotary engine coupled with four electric motors, and

therefore making the car very fuel efficient. The car is capable of

2.5litre/100 km (113 mpg), that is 40 km per litre, together with CO2

emissions of less than 60 g/km

“Namir” is not just an exercise in style for the love of style itself, but rather

a vehicle developed in every phase by the Turin-based firm, Italdesign

Giugiaro. The body, chassis and mechanical layout were designed and

built by the Engineering Division, the interior and exterior finish by the

Style Centre, while the electrical and electronic elements were provided

in association with Frazer-Nash.

The prototype was built entirely at the Italdesign Giugiaro Plant.

Art at the Polo ClubL'Art au Polo Club

Corinne Schuler is a great lover of contemporary

art. She has always had the desire to open up her

incomparable grounds to offer visitors a cultural

experience of the highest artistic quality. The Haras

de Gassin which extends itself over nearly 60 acres

is a unique preserve, the perfect foil for setting up a

contemporary art walk. The Polo Club’s director,

Jean Dominique Gontrand and Valérie Penven,

the exhibition manager, are entrusted

with turning this magnificent terrain into a

backdrop for a permanent exhibition of

figurative and non-figurative works of art

from June to September 2010.

The main idea has been to create a sequence

of sculptures along a natural path that takes

into account the dimensions of the spaces

and the proportions of the works of art. The

trail, which has been thoroughly researched

and develops from the rather small to the

monumental to reflect man’s relationship with

his environment…. Every piece is in a place

perfectly suited to its spirit so it can transmit

its individual poetry to the visitor, the surprise or the

sensitivity of contemporary sculpture.

Bernard Reyboz, Marion Burkle, Tassou, Jacky

Coville, Philippe Pastor, Alain Boullet, Nicholas

Lavarenne, Bruno Lucchi, Florence Jacquesson

and Célia Gouveiac are in the cast for this first

exhibition. These different artists show a great

diversity in their approach to material, form and their

work. But all of them interpret their vision of the

universe in their personal style that leaves a mark on

our sense of the aesthetic in art and nature. Their

view enriches the subject and allows each one of us

to observe their different intent and to reflect on the

place of man in his natural and social environment.

Happenings are also planned for this first season and

surprising guests will be attending the exhibition. Do

not miss this event!
