The dominant family explained: (the stereotypical family roles)

‐Father: instrumental role (main breadwinner & decision‐maker)

‐Mother: expressive, nurturing and cares for the home. May do some part‐time work.

‐Family is based upon romantic love as well as love for children. A loving institution.

‐New Right sees the cereal packet family as the most natural and wholesome, crucial to maintain society's values.

DISCUSS:To what extent is this type of family best?Explain 5 ways in which the family haschanged from this today and to whatextent changes have been good or bad forsociety?

Apr 1911:13

Barrett and McIntosh (1982): the stereotype found in family ideology is negative:

1) It's patriarchal: Exploits women (The triple shift). Women become dependent upon men.

2) It's harmful:It suggests that other forms of relationships are deviant. (When politicians write about 'strengthening the family' they condemn those outside the traditional framework, including single parent families. )Fails to recognise the dark side of the family (child abuse & domestic violence)

3) It's anti‐social: It devalues life outside of the family. Much social life today is centered around the family so difficult to participate otherwise. Harding (1995) found that social housing disadvantaged the single parent families most (Housing is often built for NF rather than LPF or larger families).

What examples can you think of to illustrate how 'nuclear' families might tend to be portrayed more positively?

Comparative View of Family Policy

We are going to look at some cross‐cultural examples from different societies & historical periods that show us how state

policies can affect family life.

Can you think of any examples of historical family policies?

1 child policy

TASK: Watch the video and note down what the 1 child policy included and what the consequences include.

China's one child policy

‐ One‐child policy introduced in 1979 to control population growth in China. in 2016 it was altered, couples are now allowed to have 2 children.

‐ Those who comply get extra benefits ‐ free childcare and extra tax allowance, and housing and educational priority later on in life.

‐ Couples have to ask permission to try for an extra child and possibly be put on waiting list.

Women who have had more than one may be pressured to get sterilized and the families face penalties and fines.

AO2: Key Evidence:

Apr 1913:01

Romanian orphanages were a huge scandal when exposed in the early 1990s. Overcrowding malnutrition and lack of care. Many children were given up by their parents after the forced policies of Ceausescu's government.

AO2: Key Evidence:Communist Romania:Former government in 1980s introduced policies to try to drive up the birth rate.Key features: ‐Restricted contraception and abortion‐Set up infertility treatment centres ‐Made divorce more difficult‐Lowered the legal age of marriage to 15 ‐Made unmarried adults and childless couples pay an extra 5% in tax.

Nazi Germany:1930s Germany encourage those deemed 'racially pure' to breed a 'master race'.

Official policy aimed at confining women to the 'children, kitchen and church.'

The state sterilised 375,000 people they deemed to be unfit on the grounds of 'physical malformation, mental retardation, epilepsy, imbecility, deafness and or blindness.' Many were later murdered in concentration camps.

AO2: Key Evidence:

Romania and Germany may seem radical examples but relatively speaking didn't happen that long ago.How can citizens be vigilante against the emergence of such policies today and how might we oppose them?

Apr 1913:23

From what you know about perspectives on the family so far, what types of policies on the family do you think they might come up with?‐Come up with three ideas for each and then we can see if next lesson how accurate you could be.1) Functionlaism2)New Right3) Feminism
