Notes on reading in the History of Political Thought (1 items)

While lectures will be a guide to the themes in the set texts, they will not provide a substitute for reading them.  Students will derive the greatest benefit from the lectures if they have begun the prescribed reading.  Your Tutors will specify what sections of the texts to prepare for tutorial discussions.

As you will see from the following detailed bibliography, there is an immense amount of material available – both material directed towards our set texts and their particular contexts and issues, and those which address or are produced by the wider world in which our theorists are located.  Some of this material will be referred to in lectures; some is matter for further reading on your part, as time and will allow. Each section includes material that will introduce you to the main thinkers concerned, their ideas, and the historical and intellectual context in which they wrote. This material is there to support your reading and preparation for the essays and exam.

One thing to bear in mind is that these are historical texts. While we have taken care to direct you to the best modern editions of these books, they were written over a long historical period. You may find the language and style difficult to approach at first, but persevere. The ideas in these texts are generally clear and the lectures will help to orientate you within the texts. It's also worth noting that these texts are the product of very different historical periods from our own. You shouldn't expect these thinkers to share all of our current beliefs about politics and society. Indeed part of the aim of this course is to show you how our current beliefs about politics have been shaped by a long series of philosophical debates.

Detailed Bibliography (18 items) You are expected to become familiar with the set texts. Other material is suggested and/or
