October is upon us and there is a chill in the air. Football games consume every television on the weekends. Leaves are changing colors, and many of us are probably spending our weekends raking the ones that have fallen onto our lawns. It is undeniable; fall has arrived in Kansas City.

With cooler temperatures lurking just around the corner ready to spoil any hope that summer might stick around for just a bit longer, I thought it would be nice to know that you can still love the great city we call home, even in the fall; and even if you aren’t a football fan! Here are five reasons to ‘fall’ in love with Kansas City.

1. LOUISBURG CIDER MILLOctober is synonymous with Halloween. And Halloween is synonymous with cider and apples! Head on down 69 Highway and enjoy some delicious apple cider, as well as a huge pumpkin patch and a 10 acre corn maze. The Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze are open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Admission is $8 and children three and under are free.

If zombies are your thing, the Cider Mill is also hosting Zombie Forest Night on October 19th. Dress up for a

night filled with bonfires, live music, and hayrides. Be sure to bring a flashlight as you try to wind your way through the maze at night. The zombie fun starts at 6:30 p.m. and lasts until 10:30 p.m.

2. HAUNTED HOUSEAs a person who does not find joy in being scared silly, I had to dig to find information about haunted houses in Kansas City. Boy was I surprised! Who knew Kansas Citians were such thrill seekers? I found information on at least five different haunted houses. I was surprised to find Kansas City has a haunted house known for its elaborate scenes. The Beast House located at 1401 W. 13th Street in Downtown KC, is an open format haunted house allowing you to walk through scenes wondering when an actor or activated device will appear. You can expect to spend about 45 minutes to an hour wandering through The Beast until you get to the exit, a four story slide! The Beast is open nightly throughout October and single passes cost around $30.

3. FALL FESTIVALSIf pageantry and jousting are right up your alley, be sure to check out the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, open weekends from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. through October 14th. There are over 160 artisans to shop, plenty of food, street musicians as well as stage

acts, and of course jousting! The last weekend of the festival will be an Oktoberfest theme, featuring a farmer’s market, trick or treating for the kids, craft beer and wine tastings, free arts and crafts, and a costume contest.

If 16th century fashion and folly aren’t for you, take a short trip down to Paola, KS for the 9th Annual Harvest Festival and Chili Cook-Off. The free event on October 26th takes place outside the Paola Chamber of Commerce. It features a costume contest, live music, arts and crafts, and obviously, a chili cook-off. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

4. OVERLAND PARK ARBORETUM AND BOTANICAL GARDENSLocated at 8909 W. 179th Street in south Overland Park the Arboretum and Botanical Gardens sits on 300 acres of hybrid trees and shrubs native to the area. Take some time to hike through almost five miles of trails containing two bridges spanning Wolf Creek, wood chip trails, and a trail that will take you out by the limestone bluffs. For the less adventurous, walk along the paved ‘country road’ trail and take in the beautiful fall colors while seated on one of many benches along the way.

The Arboretum is open seven days a week and there is a small admission fee, but they hold a couple of ‘free weekends’ each year. The next free weekend is October 12th and 13th. Admission is also free every Tuesday.

5. Chiefs Home GamesIt is almost impossible to talk about the fall in Kansas City and not mention the Chiefs. With a new coach and a new quarterback, the Chiefs are something to look forward to on the weekends. If you can’t afford the ticket to get into Arrowhead Stadium, you can always pack up a cooler, load up a grill, and head over to the stadium to do some world class tailgating! For the cost of parking, you and a bunch of friends can hang out, grill burgers and brats (or veggie burgers and veggie dogs), have some drinks and laughs, round up some other tailgaters for a friendly bean bag toss, start your own parking lot Tomahawk Chop, and cheer the home team to victory from the back of your truck!

While summer time may be coming to an end, and weekends at the lake, on a boat, or sitting on a patio with some friends will be taking a break, with so many great fall events to take part in, what’s not to love about our amazing city? So grab some friends, take the family, and get out there and have some fall fun!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so what am I even doing here? You don’t need me to introduce these photos – they pretty much speak for themselves. Just take a look and you’ll see that everyone had a grand time chowing down, competing for the AAA title, and making lifelong memories. So seriously, stop reading this and go relive this wonderful day through the magic of digital photography.

Pumpkin PandemoniumBy Britton Cunningham

There are various benefits to Autumn: There’s wind in the trees, it’s not smoldering hot outside, you get to wear football jerseys and celebrate Chiefs Day, but the most exciting by far, is

pumpkins. Yes, pumpkins. They appear in your Starbucks beverages and in breads and pies. Patches of them pop up all over for you to scavenge over hundreds to find the one that speaks to you, but you also get to decorate them. No, I’m not talking carve in the typical jack-o-lantern face you see every year, I’m talking decorate. This is the 21st century, we can do better than a simple toothy smile and triangle eyes; let’s get crafty.

PaintingCover the large orange gourd in paint is all the rage recently, and there are many options. There are some many patterns that look wonderful, chevron, argyle, polka dots, or stripes; they would look wonderful on your front door step or living room. Because you haven’t cut them open, they lack that pumpkin-like smell. If you add a top coat of Modge Podge to your pumpkin, it will seal in the color and prevent staining your floor or doorstep. You can also paint words, monograms, candy corn stripes, or my favorite, a minions.

For the minion, use mason jar or peanut butter lids and attach with Modge Podge. Use rubber bands to hold eyes on until dry.

CarvingI f you’re a traditionalist and

prefer to carve, the world is still your oyster. Think outside the box of the typical face, but how about carving your house numbers into your pumpkins? Also, carving think vertical chucks will make the pumpkin more of a lantern for your front steps or porch. For a variety of patterns cut into one pumpkin, use a fall cookie cutter set to trace out shapes.

DecoratingLastly, if you want keep things slightly less messy, i.e. covering your hands in paint or pumpkin, decorate it with whatever you fancy. Glue buttons on to spell Halloween or fall words, create decorative lines or spirals out of sequins, or even add hair to make them look more like a character. Anything you want to decorate with will work, sunflower seeds, yarn, pipe cleaners, tiny plastic spiders, or anything you desire. You can even tie a bow around the pumpkin stem will add a nice touch. Lastly, try turning the pumpkin on its side (stem is the nose) and create a master piece!

A combo of any of these (or all three!) will look fabulous. Just make sure you have fun with it and you display your artistic creation for all to see.

Watermelon Wednesday August 14th was a beautiful summer day full of sunshine and happiness, and Culture Club decided to take advantage of a sun-kissed opportunity. After stopping by Sam’s a buying a pallet of watermelon, Culture Club was ready for a feast to commence. With over 40 watermelons cut and sliced, PlattFormers got some much needed Vitamin D shooting hoops, chatting at the picnic tables, and munching on some delicious melon. Thanks to all who came out and enjoyed the delicious treat!

Yes We Can, in the Can! Culture Club has received some awesome suggestions, and we are working implementing some. One stumbled across our plate about a month ago about the toilet paper. Yes, we even get suggestions about the toilet

paper. After seeking out the necessary people, we obtained a few options for new TP in the bathrooms. Our very own Justin Weiners tested the product and gave his thumbs up of approval. Starting in late August, the softer toilet paper has been stocked in the bathrooms.

Remember: No suggestion is a bad one. Let us know what you think, and we’ll see what we can do about it.
