1. March heralds the return of spring - not that we’ve had much winter. Do you think we’re home-free? Or do you think Kansas has one last snowy trick up her sleeve?

• Home-free! Where are my shorts? 37% • Don’t. Trust. Kansas. *grabs coat* 63%

2. We should have a holiday between January 1st and Memorial Day. What should it be?

• President’s Day or Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They make the most sense. 32%

• NCAA Finals Day 32% • PlattDay. On April...3rd? 25th? Look, I don’t care - let’s just

make this happen. 37%

3. March Madness! It’s both in March, and it’s mad. Discuss: • Love it, and I took the PTO to prove it. 32% • I like it enough that I’ll be keeping track. Maybe filling out a

bracket. 39% • Hate it. Everyone’s on PTO or has totally lost their non-

basketball brain functions. 29%

4. Favorite part about the Oscars: • Checking out the fashions and tuning out

everything else. 27% • Trying to guess which stars were secretly (or not-so

secretly) drunk. 8% • Angelina Jolie being ridiculously obvious about flashing

her leg and then getting mocked for it. 23% • Not watching them. ZING! 42%

5. Seven days left until Mass Effect 3. What are you most excited about?

• Wait - I have to choose one thing? I don’t want to. I’m using a cheat code: ALL OF IT! 3%

• The storyline and seeing how all of my decisions over three games affect the outcome. 4%

• The gameplay. More options and tougher A.I.? I’m stoked. 5% • Is this one of the nerd-centric questions again?

It is? K - I’m out. 87%

Every 27 seconds somewhere in the world a mother or sister is diagnosed with breast cancer. Every 77 seconds, a life is lost to breast cancer. In order to raise awareness for this disease, PlattFormers are participating in the 6th Annual Think Pink Day on Thursday, March 22nd.

PlattFormers from all departments will be encouraged to wear the color pink that day in order to help to raise money and spread the word about breast cancer.

Last year’s parade of pink boas, pink hats, pink shoelaces, pink sweaters, pink shirts, pink socks and pink skirts was a fun, successful event.

Pink. Coral. Salmon. Magenta. Fuchsia. Whatever you call it, just don’t forget to wear it on Thursday, March 22nd to help find a cure for breast cancer.

For more information, visit www.komen.org

THURSDAY, MARCH 22ND

Congratulations to Lee Conine for winning the Billiards Championship in the 2012 PlattForm Advertising Tournament of Champions. Kyle Andrew took 2nd. Well done gentlemen! Steve Booth and Kyle Regier still have to battle it out for 3rd place later this week and good luck to both of them.

Thanks to everyone who came out to watch the match and a quick reminder that the Nintendo Wii Tourney will be coming up in the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned for that…

A new month brings a new Innovator of the month to showcase! Nate McGinnis was the most recent recipient, chosen by his predecessor, Kris Saim. Nate was chosen for his efforts to help with efficiencies in our email processes. Through an examination of production and results on emails blasts he realized we could eliminate plain text emails with little to no impact on the return on investment for our clients.

The plain text emails were creating extra time for the team“It was a lot of work and we had to fix a lot of it by hand,” noted Nate regarding plain text emails. “We started wondering if anyone actually got these. We were spending more time on these versions than the actual HTML versions.” Ultimately when testing blasts without using plain text emails, the team discovered that there wasn’t a drop –off in results when these were eliminated.

Nate also mentioned this was a team effort and Tony Toubia, Sarah Martin, Travis Kerkvliet, and Kate Edwards were all instrumental in helping foster this initiative and bring it to fruition. According to Nate the only barrier to this innovations was that we’d “been doing it this way for years and years.” What a good reminder that there is always opportunity to revisit our processes and look for a different, possibly better approach. As Nate says “Keep innovating!”

PFU Class – Teamwork • Instructor – Danny Pumpelly Scheduled for – April 12

The goal with this PFU class is to share knowledge on effective teams and engage the room in discussing their experiences of team dynamics.

As everyone knows, teamwork is a large part of what we do here at PlattForm. Danny Pumpelly can help give you a better sense of how an effective team functions, where you fit in a team, and an overview of the teams at PlattForm and how we can be more effective as a group.

According to Danny, you don’t want to miss this class, because “You can improve your team player skills, improve the teams on which you work and live, and you might just have some fun doing it.”

Other classes in April:

PFU Class – Managing Up • Instructor – Steve BoothScheduled for – April 5

PFU Class – PowerPoint Essentials • Instructor – Danny Pumpelly • Scheduled for – April 11

DANNY PUMPELLY

Innovator of the Month – February

It started with a simple conversation.

Sometime in mid-2011, Michael Mackie was furiously typing away at his latest award-winning script when a familiar face appeared. “Mike McHugh stopped by to talk,” Mackie says. “He never does that ... unless he wants something.”

McHugh had an idea. He wanted to promote the Beauty Schools Management Group on TV in an innovative way. And since Mackie is such a “huge local über TV celebrity” (his words), McHugh figured the two could team up to develop a strategy.

The pair developed a plan to pitch a series of on-the-scene reports at Kansas City-area beauty schools for the local CBS affiliate, KCTV5. As the station’s pop culture correspondent, Mackie appears at the schools with co-anchor Carolyn Long to get an up-close look at the services they offer. The duo has reported on recent health and beauty trends like reflexology and hair feathers, and one of their most-talked about reports was on Halloween-themed makeup applications.

“Clients love that it helps their beauty schools, and Carolyn loves getting pampered,” said Mackie. “She about lost her mind when we got foot massages.”

“Being on KCTV5 increased visibility for us in a unique and fun way, on both TV and the web. It’s a win-win for us and our clients.” said Site Manager Heather Physioc.

Check out BSMG’s YouTube channel (youtube.com/beautyschools) to watch the Halloween video and keep your eyes out for new content in the coming months.

Oh, the drama! PlattForm’s new calling card is up and ready for the world … er, everyone driving southbound on I-35 to see.

But the labor of love wasn’t without a few snags, road bumps and legal interventions. It took nearly a year from the time PlattForm decided to erect a sign until it actually came to fruition.

How difficult was putting our logo on the building? You’d be surprised.

“I’ve been involved for almost a year trying to get that damn thing up there,” said Brand Manager Angie Keiser. “The city of Lenexa had stipulations on everything from colors to sizes to location on the building. It took forever.”

When PlattForm leased space in our new building over three years ago, provisions were made in our contract to put up a sign if/when we decided to do so. Unfortunately, when push came to shove – PForm had to do a lot more pushing than expected.

“The big thing was getting it approved through our landlords,” said Chief Culture Officer (and always frugal) Steve Booth. “My interpretation was -- it was as if they didn’t want us to put up a sign. So we had our lawyer call their lawyer.”

How did the sign come about in the first place? Well, our one and only founder Michael Platt decided we needed a sign when a client couldn’t find our building … and was forever driving around the endless Waterside maze. Now people can see us from far and wide … finally.

What originally started as two signs eventually became one – placed smack-dab on the front of the building for higher visibility.

“Part of our old sign (from our Olathe location) blew off in a storm,” said Booth. “This one isn’t going anywhere.”

Always wanted to know what happened to our original sign … the one from our first building in Stanley? All you have to do is traipse in to the Superhero Room on the 2nd floor. Dave had it turned in to a conference room table. Cool, eh?

The more you know, people.

MICHAEL MACKIE

Confession: I have never won an NCAA Tournament pool.

I consider myself a fairly well-informed sports fan. The NCAA Tournament is without question my favorite sports event, so it stands to reason that I should be pretty good at this by now. But reason means nothing in the tournament – they don’t call it Madness for nothing.

Some years, I put in too much effort and spend hours poring over each matchup. Which team is hottest coming into the tournament? Which one starts more seniors? Who has the advantage in point differential? Will the team’s hotel have soundproof walls and limited access to certain floors to make sure all players get a good night’s sleep? These are the things I must know.

By Thursday morning, I feel confident enough to make my final picks in ink. I’ll throw in a few wild upsets, and maybe even put an 8- or 9-seed in the Final Four. But by that afternoon, things have usually fallen apart.

The scrappy underdog I put in the Elite Eight has a bad case of stage fright and loses by 30. The wrong 12-seed advances. The team that makes 85 percent of its free throws starts bricking them down the stretch. It’s about this time that I realize I spent hours of my life analyzing the possible outcomes of a bunch of 19- and 20-year-olds playing on the biggest stage of their lives.

Other years, I try to keep it simple. I’ll glance at each matchup, take a quick look at each team’s record, and then go with

my gut. Big 12 and Big East teams usually get a slight bump due to a tougher conference schedule, and aside from a few upsets, I usually try to stick with the higher seeds and not overthink it. You know what happens next.

Teams that should dominate simply fall apart. Underdogs start tossing up threes like they’re playing pop-a-shot. Superstars get in foul trouble. Short, unathletic, corn-fed scrubs have the game of a lifetime. Somehow, all of these things seem to happen against Kansas.

So go ahead and take my money (er, my imaginary money, since I respect the sanctity of the student-athlete and would never cheapen their hard work for my own shot at monetary gain). As far as I’m concerned, it’s already gone. But I’ve never been happier to throw away some of my hard-earned cash.

?ACCOUNTINGAccounting updates have been MIA the last couple months , so we’re playing “catch-up” on our updates:Jennifer Tuttle welcomed a beautiful little girl, Aubrey Mae Carpenter, on December 6th. She will be returning to work in the next couple weeks.

Accounting has come up with a new internal award aptly named the “Goblet of Greatness.” To earn this prestigious award, one must go above and beyond and be recognized by their account-ing co-workers. To date, we’ve had two honorees: Ellie Quinter and Michelle Young.

Tammy Miller has spearheaded the clean-up of the storage room. As you walk by Steve Booth’s office, you’ll see a dwindling num-ber of boxes. There has been a lot of hard work by the accounting and operations folks to get this cleared out.

Accounting teamed up with the HR/Admin and Operation teams to host a taco bar that served as a “mixer” to let us get to know others we don’t have a chance to work with very often. The food and company was fantastic!

CONTENTBrendon brought in a coffee maker and Steve brought in a mini fridge, so everyone’s well hydrated. We’re currently shopping for a full-sized pizza oven. Abby found her true calling when she got to write about the fastest ATVs, snowmobiles and wave runners. So if you’re in the market for a new toy, stop by and ask her all about best “hot-sauce fast” models. Sasha is in crazy, hectic planning mode for her upcoming wedding on May 18. Asked to describe the process in three words, she went with “exciting,” “memorable” and “overwhelming.” Bridezilla she’s not. Linda is doing her best to balance work with a little decompression time at home. The word around the office is that she actually made it through dinner once without fretting over a pressing issue at work.

CLIENT SERVICES• Todd Parker and Drew Battleson both welcomed new little additions to their families.

• CS recently had a “Super Bowl” party - which was filled with Chipotle and prizes.

• The Higher Ed side had their annual 4 year Chex Mix party.• We are now doing secret pals amongst our department – shhhh!

MARCOMMeet the newest MarCom interns, Robin and Katie! They’re here on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and are a huge asset to our team. We’re lucky to be getting to know them, so we’re shar-ing the experience with all of you:

Robin Latham, University of Kansas, Communication Studies:

• Describe yourself in three words: my, father’s, daughter. • What are you doing for St. Patty’s Day this year? I’m Irish and Scottish so I’ll be showing off my family’s tartan and working on my Irish accent.

• On your first day as an intern, what was your impression of PlattForm? Here’s a rough version of my train of thought upon

arrival: “Wow, this place is huge. What’s a binding machine do? I don’t even know how to use this phone, why is it beeping? Oh shoot, what’s my password? These people must think I’m an idiot. Wow, these people do EVERYTHING! So you want me to go buy two pounds of candy for a piñata? Everyone says hi to me, It’s like I’m in a small town. I like small towns. I like PlattForm better. I’m so applying for a full time job here.”

• What do you like best about your PlattForm internship so far? Meeting so many people and having opportunities to learn about and try out so many different things! The reverse osmosis water cooler is a close second.

Katie Martino, Park University, Public Relations:

• Describe yourself in three words: Friendly, curious, creative • What are you doing for St. Patty’s Day this year? No plans… Wearing green! Maybe, since I’m 21 now, try green beer (can I say that? Lol)

• On your first day as an intern, what was your impression of PlattForm? I was surprised at how fun it was here, I wasn’t expect-ing that. Also, everyone was so welcoming.

• What do you like best about your PlattForm internship so far? I like that I’m given so many significant jobs, it makes me feel important.

MEDIAMedia is gearing up for our annual added value contest, this time reaching for the $1.2 million mark. We apologize in advance for any trash-talking you may hear murmured between the pods. We’re normally very kind folks.

Adam Spencer, Garrett Boal, and Mindy Phillips have taken it upon themselves to bring us “Moments of Joy” each week that include scaring some of our beloved department members. Please proceed with caution when entering your own office. Consider this your official warning.

The department recently welcomed a new addition, Intern Brea Mercurio! She has been an outstanding support to the team, learning the ropes of Media and helping aid new client launches.

OPERATIONSChristina was promoted to Senior Project Manager. Erin enjoyed her complimentary vacation in Portland. We had a team movie day; we watched Despicable Me and ate tons of popcorn and candy. We joined Accounting/Finance and HR for a taco bar day. (This team really loves food.) Melissa C. finally adopted her long-term foster cat, Carl. Val got an awesome cactus farm for Valentine’s Day – eight cacti in one pot! Nate, Erin and Melissa D. helped launch the new CCC site – go browse! Not much else, but we did find out our blues names (courtesy of the Print department):Christina N. Martin = Sticky Foot LeeErin M. Cockman = Texas Gumbo HopkinsMegan A. Schulte = Jailhouse Bones DavisVal S. Smith = Toothless Bad Boy DavisNate A. McGinnis = Peg Leg Bones LeeMelissa R. Cowan = Jailhouse Dog HopkinsElizabeth M. Bratichak = Texas Gumbo McGeeSarah D. Melissa A. Davis = Jailhouse Bones DupreeTroy S. Johnston = Big Bad Boy Washington(And Lydia and Allen didn’t answer so they only get the first and last name)Lydia Koehler = Pretty SmithAllen Harkleroad = Fat Rivers

PRINTPrint has decided it is no longer interested in being called Print. Due to the fact that most of what we do is print, it makes sense that we would be called Print. However, print, as a medium covers so much more than just print. Its t-shirts, its billboards, its swag, its wall graphics, its photography, its image manipulation, its color cor-rection, its Photoshop and Illustrator and Acrobat and Indesign, its innovation, its collaboration, its creativity and branding and illustra-tion and painting and crayons and playdoh and popsicle sticks with tacky glue and cotton balls and toilet paper rolls and pipe cleaners and beer.

So Print has decided it is no longer interested in being called Print.

We will let you know when we come up with a new name.

SalesThe Marketing Consultants will be going on a team outing at the end of March. They are also focusing on training and development.

BSMGAccounting’s Loss is our GAIN! We welcome Shari Good to the BSMG POD! She will be fulfilling a new role of Account System Specialist but will still have some of her old job duties with the BSD system and mixing in new responsibilities too! We are super pleased to have her expertise with the BSD system and want to wish her a super happy birthday in March as well!

SITE MANAGERSWe’re having quadragintauplets! START Team is on-boarding more than 40 new acquisition sites that we aim to turn into profitable, actively managed sites. It’s Guider Mania! We’ve done a little game of musical chairs on the team (except no one got their chair swiped out from under them). Former START Teamer Taylor Hazelhurst has moved to the Sales team to help develop new business initiatives. START Team also gained Trey Morgan who will help them with SEO and social initiatives. Clifford B. now manages BeautySchool.com instead of US College Search, alongside Heather P. who continues to manage Beauty Schools Directory, and Lauren M. took on USCS in addition to Technical Schools Guide that she already manages. *deep breath* Phew! Just come see us if you have questions. We probably have snacks.

WE WANT YOU FOR CULTURE CLUBELECTIONS for next year’s CULTURE CLUB are swiftly approaching. Have YOU noted what your special interest groups are clamoring for? Are YOU the person who will best REPRESENT PlattForm constituents’ wishes? Are YOU eager to take your rightful place as front-runner with innovative canvassing and campaigning? Good. We want to add YOU to our ballot.

FIND OUT MORE at an informational breakfast with lame duck and incumbent CC members on THURSDAY, MARCH 29, at 8:30 a.m.

Bi–partisan candidates only, please.

“I haven’t ever been to an online dating site.” -- Jason Markel

“Nooooo way am I answering that!!!” – Kevin Kuzma (and, yes, he added that many exclamation points)

“No, I am afraid that if I ever tried it I would find trouble..but some of my best friends found their husbands online.” – Sarah Winston

“I have never been to an actual “dating” site but I plan on finding love and trouble on Pinterest.” – Chris Mason

“Never been on an online dating site. Don’t think I ever would do that, the people you interact with on an everyday basis are weird enough. There’s the possibility of meeting a total stranger who may or may not be Manson-like or better yet the star of a remake of “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle”. Doesn’t anyone watch “Criminal Minds”? But good luck to those that do ...” – Donnie Chatmon

“A quote from my profile; “I don’t need a photo of you with any-thing you’ve shot or caught.” Never fails – I get Hunter Hank with his 30 point buck. Um – no thank you.” – Tiffany Romeo

Have you ever been on an online dating site? Did you find love, trouble or something else?

??? ? ?? ?? ?

??MICHAEL MACKIE’S

!!! I never have joined one!

“Yes, I have checked out a couple of online dating sites. With the outrageous fees, I never have joined one. As the song says, still “lookin’ for love in all the wrong places.” But at least I’m not out the money for it!” -- Stacy Huffhines

“I’ve never been to an online dating site, but one of my friends re-cently tried it out. A guy messaged her to take her on a date. She was so nervous about meeting someone through the Internet we did some espionage work. He’s a college basketball coach so we went to spy on him at a game to see if he was “normal.” Turns out he was, and turns out he saw us and recognized my friend right away. To make it even better the person sitting next to us overhead everything we were saying as we were “spying,” and happened to be the coach’s best friend. So much for our secret stalking! But my friend and the guy are still together and it makes for a good story.” -- Sasha Roe

“I created a profile once … then realized it was too much effing work.” – Jennifer Pine

“It’s horrible out there. Just horrible.” – Ashley Chitwood
