Gay CaribbeanDo you like quiet beaches, rustic places

and natural environments? Do you appreciate beautiful sunrises? Would

you like to enjoy the ocean and beach, and have them almost entirely to yourself? If the answer is yes, Puerto Viejo, in Limon is the place for you. This small town is on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. Puerto Viejo contains a mix of cultures, which are hard to believe. It is also the most gay friendly area on the eastern side of Costa Rica. Puerto Viejo is full of tasty restaurants and nightspots, with all the services you desire; grocery stores, shops, internet cafes, and bars. The first people to inhabit this area were the native Indians of Costa Rica, before the conquers. Black peoples from the Caribbean Islands were the next to arrive, originally as slaves to work in cocoa plantations then to build the train system. These people remained after slavery was abolished, over a century ago. Many Americans and Europeans now also call this region home. The Caribbean coast is best when visited between June and October. This is also the time considered the "rainy season" on the western, Pacific coast. Lodging accommodations can be found at 2 gay friendly inns, just 10 minutes north of Puerto Viejo, and are located right on the beach. Hotel Perla Negra is owned, and has been managed, by Marlena Grae, for over 16 years. This hotel has 24 standard rooms, starting at $61 for double occupancy, plus $10 extra per person, with up to 5 guests per room. Hotel Perla Negra also has 6 condos, and 2 townhouses available for rental. Each of these have A/C and kitchens. Continental breakfasts are included for all guests. Other accommodations include a bar, pool table and

ocean front swimming pool. Banana Azul Hotel has been operated and owned for the last 2 years by hosts, Colin and Roberto. They have 13 rooms, which start at $69 for double occupancy. Some of these rooms have A/C, so be sure to ask if you prefer a cooler room. While at Banana Azul, enjoy their full restaurant, complete bar, and brand new swimming pool, which is surrounded by amazing landscaped gardens. Another option is to stay in downtown Puerto Viejo. Here you will be surrounded by bars, shops and restaurants. Cabinas Los Almendros has 17 roooms, with A/C and also cable TV. Cabinas Los Almendros is owned and managed by Frank Leon. Rooms start at $60 for double occupancy. Please note that these hotels are "gay friendly", and as such, some of the other guests may not be gay. While you are enjoying your stay in Puerto Viejo you may begin to feel adventurous. If this is the case, you can enjoy some of the many available tours, such as: horseback riding, scuba diving and snorkeling, or white water rafting. Puero Viejo is easy to get to. From San Jose you can take public transportation for just $8 per person. You may also purchase tickets on a private minibus for $39 per person. The minibus provides pick up and drop off services from you hotel in San Jose, to your hotel in Puerto Viejo. At this time, air travel from San Jose is not available. Puerto Viejo, in Limon is the perfect place to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica.

Don't forget to bring a good book or two, and, of course, your camera.

Pura Vida!
