The KingsThe Kings
KING
The KING can move one space in any direction.
The QueensThe Queens
The QUEEN can move any number of spaces in any one direction.
The RooksThe Rooks
The ROOK can move any number of spaces up, down, left, or right.
KnightsKnights
The KNIGHT moves in an L-shaped pattern. 2 spaces up, down, left, right, and then 1 space to make L-shape.
ONLY KNIGHTS can jump over other pieces.
BishopsBishops
The Bishop moves any number of squares diagonally only.
PawnsPawns
First Move (2 spaces)
PAWNS move FORWARD one square at a time. However, they can move two spaces forward on their first move.
Pawns Capture DiagonallyPawns Capture Diagonally
The PAWN moves FORWARD one square. However, to capture another piece a pawn must move diagonally.

In this case the black king cannot move out of check. Every square that the king could move to is threatened by a white piece.

• Castling is only possible if your king has not yet moved or been in check.
•To castle, move your king two squares towards the available rook. Then bring the rook and place it next to the king on the other side.
