Platinum Australia Limited, thecompany which owns the Smokey HillPlatinum Mine near Burgersfort, hasresumed operations at the mine after itwas halted on Thursday last weekfollowing an incident of mob violencenear the mine.

Late afternoon of Thursday 26 Mayan employee of the mining contractorat the Smokey Hills Mine, JIC MiningServices was fatally injured in anincident while travelling home from themine at the end of day shift. A furthereight JIC employees who were in thevehicle were also injured in theincident. The incident occurredapproximately 5km from the mine onthe new Maandaghoe tarred roadwhen the mini bus transporting nineJIC workers was attacked by a crowdof people, which reportedly included anumber of ex employees of JIC whohad been terminated in Februaryfollowing illegal strike action. When thebus stopped it was stoned by thecrowd, turned on its side and set on

fire. 39 year old employee of JIC, Mr KobusJansen van Rensburg from Lydenburg wasfatally assaulted when he climbed out of thebus. The other JIC employees were alsoassaulted when they got out of the bus, requiring five of the employees to behospitalised.

Mining operations on the mine weresuspended following the incident andremained suspended during Friday. Nomining operations were planned for theweekend as it was an end of month pay offweekend. Platinum Australia also requestedthat a trading halt be granted by theAustralian stock exchange with respect to itsordinary shares. The company was seekingthe trading halt pending an announcementto the market regarding matters to do withoperations. The Company requested thatthe trading halt remain in place until theopening of trading on Monday 30 May.

Following the incident seniormanagement from Patinum Australia andJIC met with senior Limpopo governmentofficials including the Office of the Premierand a task team was established to address

the situation and ensure the safety andsecurity of the mine and its personnel, the majority of whom are from theLimpopo Province.

The company later said it has beenadvised that the police have alreadymade a number of arrests of peoplesuspected of being involved in theincident.

When Platinum Gazette visited thescene earlier this week, the guttedminibus was still lying next to the road, while Policemen were busy talking toresidents next to the road near theburned out vehicle.

Platinum Australia’s ManagingDirector, John Lewins, said thecompany would like to express itsdeepest sympathies to the family of thedeceased., why the company is alsoconfident that the steps already takenby the Limpopo Government andimplementation of further stepsproposed by the task team will providea safe and secure environment for theoperation of the Smokey Hills Mine.

Xstrata-Merafe’s Lion Ferrochrome and a number of Tubatsecommunities have agreed to form a tripartite forum with theNational Union of Mineworker (NUM) that will manage issuesof common concern.

The agreement follows several weeks of intensediscussions between the parties after several Tubastecommunities handed in a memorandum of grievances inMarch.

The forum will consist of three Lion Ferrochrome seniormanagers, eight community representatives and two branchexecutive members of NUM.

The forum, which will meet on a monthly basis, will discussand advise Lion Ferrochrome on a number of issues relating toemployment of local residents, skills development and generalcommunity economic opportunities arising out of the operation.

Xstrata-Merafe’s General Manager for Corporate SocialResponsibility, Mr Steve Makgoba says he is looking forward toworking with the community. “It is our desire that as many local

residents as possible continue to benefit from our mining andsmelting operations in the area. This forum will allow us to sharevital information which can be shared with the rest of thecommunity. This will allow community members to betterorganize themselves to take advantage of programs that we areputting in place to ensure lasting economic benefits,” saidMakgoba.

Makgoba said part of the critical information to becommunicated to communities concerned ring-fencing. “We arecommitted to ensuring total or partial involvement by localenterprises in all procurement opportunities arising out of thesoon to start Project Lion Phase 2. This will ensure that smalllocal enterprises are able to learn from bigger, more experiencedcompanies while creating more jobs for local residents,” heexplained.

Eastern Operations has appointed Mr Moffett Mabelane as aCSI Manager, to manage all community upliftment activities.Mabelane commenced his duties in the middle of May.

Tripartite forum establishedImplats says Marula Platinum (Pty) Limited,a subsidiary company in which Implats has a73% interest, has continued to underperformagainst the operational targets thatmanagement has set. Recentunderperformance is due to logisticalconstraints as a result of the conversionfrom mechanised to conventional mining atClapham shaft. As a consequence, theCompany is undertaking a full strategicreview of this business. This will enable thecompletion of the conversion project. This strategy entails an increased focus ondevelopment to open up mineable face, andlogistical initiatives such as the relocation oftrackless workshops to underground and theextension of the chairlift to surface. Giventhat the mine is currently staffed for a higherlevel of production, the company is now inthe process of investigating right sizing ofthe cost base for the lower level ofproduction. This will result in staffreductions. Accordingly, a Section 189process in terms of the Labour RelationsAct, Act 66 of 1995, has been initiated givingMarula sixty days to engage in aconsultative process with key stakeholderswith the intention of mitigating the potentialimpact on employees.

Mokutung will soon be able to use their cellphones - in theirvillage.A new cellphone tower was constructed and once a signal unit isinstalled it will kick into action. It is a Vodacom tower, but is powerfullenough that other service providers will beable to share the infrastructure. On the photograph Mr. Fanie Bornman, the contractor who constructed the towerand village headman, mnr. EmmanuelMopane shake hands on the improvement.Although the communication channels arebeing upgraded the village is stillstruggling with water supply. One part ofthe village is dependant on water from afountain up on the mountain. Water is leadfrom there to tanks from which thevillagers collect the water. Unfortunatelythe tanks have been broken for quite sometime, leaving them high and dry.Previously the municipality assisted withwater tanks and the community is hopingthat the new councillors will take care ofthis problem for them.“We are just hoping that the newcouncillors will assist. We’ll wait and see,”Mopane said.
