Plating Assembly Line A local company that designs and produces padlocks hired a plating machine manufacturer to rework one of their existing plating lines. The project ran beyond schedule and additional time was needed to complete the job. The padlock company was not satisfied about the progress being made. The padlock company contacted Pieper Automation. Pieper reviewed the work completed up to that point and determined that the HMI was not user friendly and the mechanical hardware could be improved. In addition, the panel wiring was disorganized and it would be difficult to do maintenance. Starting from scratch was found to be an effective solution. Using experience from another plating line programmed recently, Pieper was able to use this as a starting platform. In less then two weeks a fully functional program running the first recipe was made. As the padlock company saw the progress that was made in a short amount of time, they increased the amount of automation on the line. Part tracking, barrel rotation control, trending, alarm history, detailed HMI graphics, warning lights/horn, and more were added. Pieper continued to add features while the plating machine manufacturer worked through their mechanical issues. Fortunately for the padlock company, Pieper Automation was able to accomplish what was needed and more. Quality work and attention to detail resulted in a satisfied customer. Cycle times improved by 236%. Additional data tracking/ logging were added to the line and previous lines. Built in recipe control for specific parts. Serial number and bar code scanning implemented to track parts and report data to PLC and PC. Crane movement and operations optimized to decrease mechanical wear and material waste. The padlock company contacted Pieper

Automation.

Design

Pieper Automation is all about quality work. For this client,

Pieper created a user friendly HMI that showed production in

detail. Live graphics and animations of cranes and materials made

it easy for engineers to understand what process the system was

executing. Pieper’s HMI and programming helped optimize the

system saving time and money for the client’s plating line.

Commissioning

Pieper Automation achieved all of its assigned tasks and goals in a

timely manner saving the client time and money. The system

worked to the clients designs and expectations. All of this was

done using safe work practices that resulted in zero accidents.

system. Fully animated live graphics and visual

elements show barrel rotation, crane movement,

barrel and crane position and lowering and raising

crane animations.
