    Introduction

With the announcement of Intergraph's SmartPlant platform, PDS users are left wondering

what their future holds. They do know one thing: As Intergraph continues to expand

SmartPlant technology, it appears there may come a time when Intergraph no longer supports

    MicroStation-based PDS.

PDS users have a tremendous investment in specifications, catalogs, and data created with

the PDS system. Most have developed work processes based on the 3D modeling that has

made project execution more efficient over the years. To streamline their projects, most have

interfaced PDS systems with supporting business systems, such as materials management

and project control systems. These users now face the prospect of transitioning from PDS.

In a recent survey taken by Bentley, 90 percent of users said the transition from PDS is impor-

tant to them. However, only 28 percent said they had enough information to make a decision

    on which route to take.

This paper is intended to fill that information gap. It sets out options for PDS users to continue

gaining value from their PDS systems, and to take an evolutionary approach toward a transi-

tion using the components of Bentley's DigitalPlant solution. It also provides information

about future developments that will help users work out the timing of investments.

    Summary of Choices

Based on discussions with users over the past decade, Bentley has committed resources to

support PDS users as they develop their application of PDS and as they consider transition

plans. This includes a commitment in 2002 (see appendix) to provide continued support and

development of a version of MicroStation/J that provides the platform for PDS. As a result,

Bentley has a unique perspective and value proposition no other industry supplier can offer.

Collaboration with users led to Bentley's DigitalPlant solutions for PDS users solutions

    which offer options to:

Continue using PDS with current work processes, while benefiting from integration with

the MicroStation V8 project environment and from content management using

    ProjectWise

Integrate PDS data with other project activities such as FEED and functional design,

with other engineering disciplines such as civil and architectural, and with construction

    simulation

Bentley recognizes that each PDS transition plan requires careful planning and execution

based on individual work process models and business drivers. In fact, Bentley offers more

transition options than any other plant design vendor. These choices let PDS users be flexible

in their approach to transition and follow an evolutionary route, without disrupting current

work processes or limiting the ability to execute and deliver on projects.

    1. Solution Using PDS in a MicroStation V8 Project Environment

MicroStation has been the preferred graphics platform for PDS users for more than 15 years

and continues to be integrated as the core of the system. MicroStation V8 represents unpar-

alleled advances in the core platform technology, offering opportunities to expand into new

markets and increase productivity. However, PDS users will not be able to take full advantage

of MicroStation V8's productivity and time-saving enhancements, because PDS has not been

updated to run on the MicroStation V8 platform. But all is not lost. Many PDS users are taking

advantage of MicroStation V8 features while continuing to work in the MicroStation/J PDS

environment. One example is the ability to maintain PDS file integrity while leveraging several

MicroStation V8 benefits. These benefits are easily realized using the MicroStation V8-

MicroStation/J workmode environment. This read-only environment lets PDS users who

remain on the MicroStation/J platform add value to their design using a subset of

MicroStation V8 technology. Without additional configuration or compromising file fidelity,

PDS users can take advantage of MicroStation V8 functionalities to:

Plot 3D models to PDF and benefit from many new printing enhancements in

    MicroStation V8

Assign materials to PDS models and use MicroStation V8's high-end visualization

    capabilities

Integrate with other discipline-specific applications such as Bentley Architecture,

Bentley HVAC, Bentley Structural, and InRoads

Use clip volume and clip mask controls for precise viewing operations

Use AccuDraw for spatial operations such as measuring

Use MicroStation V8 for point-cloud integration while referencing PDS models

Take advantage of interoperability with DWG files, referenced together with PDS models

From 2D viewing to high-end visualization

A choice of viewing technology is critical to reaching those who take part in a multidiscipli-

nary project, but do not have a PDS license or do not participate directly in the design

process. Bentley provides a powerful design review application, free for everyone on the PDS

design team. Bentley View works with MicroStation DGN and AutoCAD DWG drawings and

models, letting users open, view, interrogate, and print design data. Non-PDS users can

graphically review project progress without the added cost of another design review seat.

Using Bentley View, PDS users can easily extend the accessibility of project data for

    MicroStation, AutoCAD, or hybrid projects.

Many PDS systems have been installed over the years and have become mission-critical CAD

tools. However, since PDS designs could only be verified by specialized operators using dedi-

cated hardware, most designers weren't able to take advantage of the 3D data benefits. As a

result, many PDS users have instituted 3D CAD operating improvement processes. The goal of

such projects is to create a 3D design reviewing environment for the entire engineering team.

A recent case study from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. highlights the considerations in

    such a project:

Intergraph PDS is our mission-critical 3D CAD system. Huge, entire plant models -

consisting of more than 100 PDS models of several hundred megabytes each - need-

ed to be viewed all at once.

We investigated many commercial tools for suitability as the plant 3D CAD system

and stability for internal PC usage. We selected Intergraph SmartPlant Review,

Bentley Navigator, and Bentley Model Streaming as our tools. The reasons we

selected Bentley Navigator were user-friendly operation and customization flexibility.

After the trial operation, we figured out that Bentley Model Streaming could not sat-

isfy the requirements of system stability, operation performance, the enhancement

requested from users against walkthrough, measurement, and other capabilities,

    and cost-effectiveness compared with Navigator.

Currently, we organize the project to train users in the effective utilization of 3D data

and the installed review tools two or three times a week on a regular basis. A two-

hour Bentley Navigator training class is provided for engineers in each section and

affiliate companies, managers, and directors to let all ease into 3D data and utilize it.

Bentley products provide excellent user interfaces that are easy to use and are easy

to learn compared with other products. Our advantages are that Bentley listens to

Bentley SELECT users' requests, and includes those requests in the products imme-

    diately compared with other vendors.

    - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.

MicroStation V8 has many built-in features for high-end visualization - including lighting,

material assignments, and photorealistic rendering - which can easily be integrated into the

PDS environment. In fact, many PDS users are already taking advantage of these capabilities,

despite the fact that PDS itself has not been updated to run on the MicroStation V8 platform.

Renderings are based on Intergraph PDS Modeling, which uses MicroStation as the

graphic engine. This allows Shaw Stone & Webster to switch directly into the

MicroStation environment for effective use of the rendering capabilities within

MicroStation. These rendering were generated with standard-type computers. No high-end expense for special computers was required to produce renderings for the company.

    - Shaw Stone & Webster, Inc.

The third phase of the project was the integration of the project in PDS with the

model in PlantSpace Design Series. This integration was possible due to the new

function in MicroStation TriForma V8. The files were generated to visualize the PDS

projects using Bentley Navigator - DGNs and DRVs. These PDS files were attached

    The reasons we

    selected Bentley

    Navigator were user-

    friendlyoperation

    and customization

    flexibility.

as reference files in the PlantSpace models. Then the engineering information can

be directly visualized in PlantSpace Design Series.

PDS intelligence can be easily viewed using MicroStation V8.

Licensing is not an issue with Bentley SELECT

Plant design projects often require combinations of software applications to accommodate

specific disciplines or tasks. Applications may be provided by multiple vendors. Depending on

the applications required, users may need to switch between MicroStation/J and

MicroStation V8 on the same workstation. This work process is not a problem for PDS users

and is supported routinely by Bentley, giving users more choices for extending the life of their

    software investments.

As part of Bentley's effort to continually add Bentley SELECT value for PDS users, Bentley

now lets PDS users apply MicroStation/J licenses to MicroStation V8 projects using Bentley

SELECT server. Licenses can be switched on and off as required. PDS users can use the

same pool of MicroStation/J licenses for MicroStation V8 projects as demand varies over the

    life of a PDS project.

Querying PDS data from within MicroStation V8

MicroStation V8 also provides a tool for querying PDS data. This is significant in many

regards. First, this query tool provides nonPDS users with a completely integrated V8

solution for plant design across all disciplines - letting users take advantage of the latest

V8 technology and discipline-specific V8 applications, while providing access to PDS

model graphics and intelligence. This is especially useful and economical for contracts

    The third phase of the

    project was the

    integration of the

    project in PDS with the

    model in PlantSpace

    Design Series. This

    integration was possible

    due to the new

    function in MicroStation

    TriForma V8.

in which PDS models are submitted in collaboration with other subcontractors and ven-

dors that do not have PDS software.

NonPDS users can work in the V8 environment while referencing the PDS models for coordi-

nation and design review activities. This work methodology allows users to take full advan-

tage of other V8 applications while extending their PDS investment.

    Bringing it all together

The main objective - to integrate all forms of existing documentation in the station in

only one database - was achieved. Visualization was improved using Bentley tech-

nology. This was another main goal of the project. Bentley Navigator is a very easy-

to-use and powerful tool that allows us to visualize and navigate our assets' 3D

models, no matter whether data is in PDS or PlantSpace format. This integration is

key to the success of the project. The ability to integrate data from PDS and

PlantSpace is unique, and the productivity achieved with PlantSpace for as-built

    production is very good.

    - Petroleo Brasileiro, S.A.

There is always the requirement to reference a legacy version of a design file to a V8 design

file. Users can easily do so via the normal reference file model.

Bentley's commitment is that MicroStation (including V8) will always be able to read any legacy

DGN file format with 100 percent fidelity, going all the way back to the format's introduction.

    Integration with engineering analysis

Bentley DigitalPlant engineering solutions can also read PDS models through a single inter-

face, which allows users a choice when it comes to pipe stress, nozzle stress, and fluid orpulsation analysis solutions. Through this common interface, PDS users can accurately and

efficiently evaluate pipe geometry, loads, pipe properties, support types, and locations for

many different piping components. Users can also customize and improve data throughput.

Through the use of a common neutral file, DigitalPlant engineering solutions enable PDS

users to perform a myriad of analysis tasks including:

Gas or liquid flow analysis in process piping networks, using an object-based graphical

interface for fast creation and modification of the piping flow model to determine net-

work flow analysis and pressure drop calculations

Pulsation analysis of piping networks for analyzing compressor and pump piping; estima-tion of acoustic mode shapes and frequencies and pulsation shaking forces on vessels

    and bends

Analysis of local stresses at vessel/nozzle junctions for cylindrical, spherical, and coni-

    cal vessels and elliptical heads

Pipe stress analysis delivered with a total of 26 piping codes, including the new European

piping code EN13480a, which is capable of supporting 20 thermal load cases, 10 wind load

cases, and 10 earthquake load cases for a total of 250 load combinations per model

    Bentley Navigator is a

    very easy-to-use and

    powerful tool that

    allows us to visualize

and navigate our assets'3D models, no matter

    whether data is in PDS

    or PlantSpace format.

    This integration is

    key to the success

    of the project.

The Bentley analysis interface (STRAIT) is used to read the PDS stress module neutral files (*.n).

The PDS analysis interface is used for design of new and existing plants by many major PDS

companies including Fluor, Burns McDonnell, Nooter/Eriksen, and Air Products.

    2. Solution Using PDS in a ProjectWise V8 Project Environment

Many PDS users have asked if Bentley could help them integrate PDS within the ProjectWise

environment. PD Shell is the PDS front end, which sets several variables, including pointers, links and workspace settings, before allowing the user to see the PDS file directory. As a result,

the PDS environment does not allow full integration within theProjectWise configuration.

However, ProjectWise is an extremely flexible tool. Bentley is constantly exploring and devel-

oping new ways to integrate with PD Shell. Projects require some degree of evaluation con-

    sistent with user requirements.

Today, PDS users can index and query PDS data from inside ProjectWise. This can be accom-

plished with basic configuration. The PDS DGN and corresponding DRV files are placed in a

ProjectWise folder, usually by executing a script file that creates a copy of the PDS files.

Using ProjectWise automation services, a job (a series of processes) is executed against the

DGN/DRV files. This job checks out the DGN/DRV file, creates a data model representation,

imports the representation, and then creates the DGN/DRV into components in ProjectWise.

By querying the PDS data from the component index, users can view that component and its

intelligence using MicroStation or Bentley Navigator. Bentley's next step in development will

be to synchronize the PDS data source with the ProjectWise component index using a com-

mon data model. The common data model will provide further integration by using the

ProjectWise content management environment to transact all project data, including PDS,

simple MicroStation or AutoCAD files, and many others.

Another use of ProjectWise today is to manage PDS outputs. PDS production deliverables,

such as isometric and orthographic layouts, can be automatically tagged and routed to a

ProjectWise folder using the integration capabilities in ProjectWise. Project team members

can share the PDS model as a reference file within other V8- compatible applications. This

work process also takes advantage of ProjectWise file-level features such as change control,

distribution, and archiving at various work-state points in the document lifecycle.

    3. DigitalPlant Solution by Bentley

Bentley provides an integrated set of tools based on internationally recognized standards

(ISO 15926, XML, DGN, DWG, and PDF) that let EPCs and plant owners create and maintain

the digital information about a plant across its lifecycle. Core to Bentley's approach is a data

management backbone that handles both files and data. Bentley has a wide range of tools

that can read, write, convert, publish, and manage information in any format. These tools are

designed for maximum interoperability among disparate data sources.

DigitalPlant is a managed environment for plant information

What does this mean to an engineering contractor?

With DigitalPlant, engineering contractors can consolidate information across multipleengineering functions in real time, improving quality of work and reducing rework

DigitalPlant allows management of information at a component level so that engineering

processes and project timescales can be compressed. For instance, taking information

forward to detailed engineering or purchasing for action no longer requires waiting for a

    signed-off P&ID document

Management can have immediate access to progress and meaningful performance met-

rics, to better manage project milestones

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 9

DigitalPlant provides a repeatable structure for managing handover requirements to

    meet widely varying owner-operator requirements

What does this mean to an owner-operator?

DigitalPlant helps reduce unscheduled plant shutdowns

According to AEA, half of unscheduled plant shutdowns are caused by selecting the

wrong equipment due to lack of information. BASF estimates that plants experience

seven unscheduled shutdowns a year, many of them due to poor data.

DigitalPlant keeps plant information up to date, accurate, and available to those that

require it - the maintenance manager who needs the latest drawings and manuals, the

procurement person who needs the latest spec sheets, or the plant engineer who needs

the latest drawings, specs sheets, and running history.

DigitalPlant helps reduce the surplus material ordered by every project

Even the best projects may order 5 percent surplus material, and it's not unusual to finda surplus of 20 percent. In any case, surplus material is usually scrapped, representing

    wasted money.

DigitalPlant provides a central, managed backbone that integrates all engineering disci-

plines and project systems. So from the ERP-based purchasing system to the project

management system scheduling the construction, everyone involved in the procurement

process can see what is required, what has been purchased, what is on site, and when

    deliveries are scheduled.

DigitalPlant provides a central project database from which all material information

across all engineering functions can be extracted. It also centrally manages construc-

tion drawings, as well as the design models from which the drawings were extracted.

In addition, DigitalPlant can rationalize materials across the project - giving project man-

agers accurate, complete information to make better procurement decisions. For exam-

ple, DigitalPlant contract management interface manages key information across multi-

    ple contractors' deliverables during construction.

DigitalPlant automatically populates operations and maintenance systems, reducing han-

    dover costs.

DigitalPlant offers a wide range of tools for connecting to and managing information

from EPC systems - from sophisticated design systems such as PDS, SmartPlant, and

PDMS using XMpLant and our own interfaces, to Knowledge Manager for extracting key

tags and line list information from DWG and DGN files, as well as our base ProjectWise

and MicroStation platforms, which can handle multiple formats.

The DigitalPlant backbone handles files and components, enabling owner-operator

maintenance management and operations systems to be automatically populated by

component data. Likewise, document management systems can be populated by rele-

vant documents and drawings. Bentley offers interfaces to connect the DigitalPlant

backbone with SAP, Maximo, Documentum, and FileNET.

Bentley has an unrivaled track record for delivering such solutions to owner-operators

on time and on budget. And Bentley's unique range of options solves a wide variety of

requirements, from simple CAD file indexing to fully populating a CMMS automatically.

Owner-operators can choose engineering contractors based on their expertise, rather

than on the system they use DigitalPlant will connect to and manage information in anyformat from any system.

DigitalPlant ensures information is complete, consistent, and correct, and supports

workflows that track and manage change across multiple contractors.

DigitalPlant has built-in support for de facto industry standards such as XMpLant, DWG,

DGN, and PDF, as well as for widely used EPC tools such as PDS, SP P&ID, InTools, and

    PDMS.

Owner-operators can easily assess the impact of new environmental regulations and

satisfy regulatory requirements DigitalPlant tracks the full audit history of plant data -

documents and components - across all stages of the lifecycle. It can also manage pro-

posed changes and determine the impact of those changes. Engineering information lasts as long as the plant DigitalPlant is based on the interna-

tionally accepted data standard ISO15926, specifically designed to manage information

in a neutral format that lasts the life of a plant.

DigitalPlant also has proven capabilities for managing and reuse of legacy information in

    DGN, DWG, and other formats.

Major Functions of the DigitalPlant Backbone

DigitalPlant not only connects silos of information, but also provides critical functions on top

    of these connections. These include:

DigitalPlant solutions have been proven in production use by some of the world's leading

process industry companies - BP, ChevronTexaco, ConocoPhillips, Bayer, Alcan, Bechtel,

Chantier Atlantic, EDF, Jacobs, KBR, M+W Zander, WGI, Foster Wheeler, BHP Billiton, UDHE,

ABB, and more. According to industry analyst firm Daratech, Bentley is the leading engineer-

ing solutions vendor in the owner-operator market.

DigitalPlant brings together solutions that have been in use for many years into a tried and

tested integrated environment. DigitalPlant adds value to plant engineering information by

ensuring the information is consistent, up to date, accurate, and reliable. It exposes this engi-

neering information in an enterprise context, and likewise exposes enterprise information in

an engineering context. Finally, DigitalPlant offers evolutionary steps to implementation, mini-

    mizing costs and risks.

    4. Integration of PDS DataWith other project activities, such as FEED and functional design, functional data is one of the

most important electronic assets in any operating facility. The ability to manage and maintain

that data in an immutable, neutral format is critical to operations and maintenance. In cooper-

ation with PDS users, Bentley has provided a migration solution so PDS P&ID data can

remain portable and valuable over the lifecycle of the facility.

In many cases, PDS users have upgraded PDS P&IDs to the MicroStation V8 format in order

to ensure data fidelity and portability.

A cost-effective migration path for Intergraph PDS P&ID data

Schering AG, a leading global player in the pharmaceutical industry, achieved 100 percentmi-

gration from PDS P&ID to Bentley PlantSpace P&ID - a project that won Schering a BE Award

    nomination in 2004.

Example of a converted PDS P&ID

In many cases, PDSusers have upgraded

PDS P&IDs to theMicroStation V8 formatin order to ensure datafidelity and portability.

  • 7/24/2019 Plant PDS Paper Making PDS Interoperable

    13/28

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 13

The goal of Schering's project was to increase the company's flexibility in dealing with its

supply chain and operating plants. Schering determined that the best way to do this was by

providing the ability to read and write both DGN and DWG files.

At the start of the project, which included more than 1,000 PDS P&IDs, Schering analyzed its

internal workflow and mapped its expectations of the new P&ID system. It selected Bentley

PlantSpace P&ID based on these results. Bentley developed a conversion tool to map the

attribute data of the PDS reference database to the Bentley attribute system. Next, it cus-

tomized PlantSpace P&ID, including the tag system and class libraries, to meet Scherings

    individual requirements.

The second phase of the project began with four weeks of user testing, after which Bentley

enhanced the software in response to user feedback. It ended in the successful conversion of

approximately 800 of the PDS P&IDs.

    Under the Hood

The first step in a conversion process of this sort is to export PDS P&IDs to a 2D environment,

where MicroStation tag sets are applied to the 2D graphics. PDS diameter callout labels,

which are plain text - for example, DN80 or DN100 - are replaced with a cell and tag. A batch

process replaces each DN text value in the PDS drawing. The MicroStation settings manager

is then used to define the 2D cells as a PlantSpace P&ID cell.

The next step is to extract the P&ID data from the PDS database. The database consists of

14 tables. From these tables, queries for PlantSpace P&ID tag definitions and tag names

are defined. In this manner all remaining tables for equipment, instrumentation and other

    are organized.

The actual conversion is performed by an application in the MicroStation environment, usingthe PDS database in the background. In a P&ID drawing, the application takes a component,

looks for a record in the database, and then goes to conversion tables for a list of fields which

should be exported to tags. Users must keep in mind that historical conversions have identi-

fied many exceptions, and therefore special components will need to be handled on a case-

by-case basis. Bentley project services are the key to a turnkey conversion, especially where

there has been significant PDS customization.

Once the conversion project is completed, users realize a fully functional P&ID drawing

which can be used in PlantSpace P&ID for production in the MicroStation V8 environment.

Several conversion projects have been successfully completed for PDS users in Germany and

    France with remarkable results.

Costs to the end user are highly dependent on the number of P&IDs and PDS workspaces, but

this is a very efficient method of conversion - especially considering that migration is 100 per-

cent accurate, and users can move forward in the MicroStation V8 environment without the

heavy burden of PDS or the cost of implementing a new system using a nonstandard format.

Working closely with PDS users, Bentley has achieved 100 percent data migration from

Intergraph PDS P&ID to PlantSpace P&ID, converting as many as 1,000 P&ID's of varying

  • 7/24/2019 Plant PDS Paper Making PDS Interoperable

    14/28

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 14

degrees of complexity. While the migration is not automatic and some configuration of the

PDS P&ID Migration tool and PlantSpace P&ID are required, many PDS users are confident

this is the most cost-effective migration path for Intergraph PDS P&ID data.

Once the PDS P&ID data is converted to the MicroStation V8 environment, it is easily shared

among highly integrated DigitalPlant solutions using off-the-shelf technology. Bentley's

AXSYS FEED solution can import data from the P&ID for use in simulation scenarios, and can

    also export updated data.

Process Engineering (FEED) Integration with SmartPlant P&ID

For users of the SmartPlant 2D solution, Bentley offers an option for FEED data integration.

Bentley's recent acquisition of the AXSYS FEED solution now makes it possible to import FEED

    data directly into SmartPlant P&ID.

The process begins with the synchronization of graphical symbols between the two systems.

AXSYS symbols are simply imported into SmartPlant P&ID, and the user then classifies themaccording to normal SmartPlant P&ID rules. This is a one-time exercise.

Similarly, on the data side an intuitive wizard configuration utility lets the user map which

AXSYS properties correspond to the equivalent properties in SmartPlant P&ID. Again, this

mapping is set up once and then used each time data is loaded into SmartPlant P&ID.

AXSYS.Process is used to automatically create the PFD and P&ID from existing FEED data.

When a user is ready to do more detailed P&ID work, the P&ID can be transferred into stan-

dard applications such as Bentley's P&ID solution for MicroStation and AutoCAD, or

SmartPlant P&ID. AXSYS provides an executable that runs within SmartPlant P&ID to load the

AXSYS P&ID graphics and data. This automated loading saves countless hours of manual

data entry and drafting of P&IDs.

The import work process is simple. The SmartPlant P&ID user creates a new P&ID sheet in

SmartPlant P&ID, and then starts importing the P&ID from AXSYS. The user then selects the

preferred AXSYS project and chooses a P&ID from the list displayed. The P&ID is read from

the AXSYS database and generated in SmartPlant P&ID as an intelligent P&ID.

Data transfer is also an option once the SmartPlant P&ID has been created. The user extracts

an XML file from AXSYS. The XML file is then opened in SmartPlant P&ID. The mapping defini-

tion information that was defined previously is used to translate the AXSYS XML data into the

equivalent SmartPlant P&ID data. This data update can be run once or more, and does not

require the P&ID to be reloaded. So any updates to the process data stored in the AXSYS

database can be sent at any time via XML into SmartPlant P&ID.

    Bonus Feature

SmartPlant P&ID users can see all of the AXSYS process engineering information using the

AXSYS Data Viewer OCX. This component is part of an AXSYS install, and can be called from

within SmartPlant P&ID. The data viewer is exactly the same as the user would see in

...many PDS users areconfident this is themost cost-effective

    migration path forIntergraph PDSP&ID data.

AXSYS.Process, and offers the same capabilities and functionality. The read-only viewer

allows data sharing with other users.

The AXSYS solution has become a standard among Bentley's top EPC and owner-operator

accounts. Bentley plans to extend this integration, providing even more choices for

    DigitalPlant and SmartPlant P&ID users.

    5. Interoperability Between PDS 3D Data and PlantSpace

Conversion between PDS and PlantSpace is straightforward, since both are based on

MicroStation. Additionally, Bentley has developed tools to support this process.

PDS users can continue to create models and Pipe Specifications using the PDS system, and

simply deliver the models in a PlantSpace format. Or they can work in one office on PDS and

in another on PlantSpace, depending on skills and resources available.

A combined PDS/PlantSpace design environment has little or no impact on training, project

delivery schedules, and work processes. Bentley's proven solution for conversion of 3D mod-

els and piping specifications lets PDS users move forward with MicroStation in a way that is

consistent with the rest of their installation. Converting PDS models to PlantSpace - which,

like PDS, is based on MicroStation - involves minimal cost and risk, while offering a practical

    step toward transition from PDS.

Today the Bentley solution scope converts both piping and equipment commodities. HVAC,

cable tray, and civil data created using PDS have not been typically requested commodities

for conversion. However, this data could easily be converted, given the scope requirement.

Structural models created using FrameWorks can be imported into a MicroStation 3D struc-

tural modeling environment, using the SDNF file exported from FrameWorks.

There are two parts to the conversion process. The first is graphical conversion of the

model itself - getting the graphics and components into the PlantSpace environment. The

second is piping specifications - getting the material and design conditions for the PDS

    systems into PlantSpace.

Both the PDS model file (DGN) and associated object attributes (DRV) are needed to convert

the graphical and nongraphical components of the model. Conversion requires familiarity with

PDS database structure and spreadsheets, as well as PlantSpace Design Series administrator

training including familiarity with PlantSpace Class Editor and Class Library. Bentley

Navigator can be used to present the full dataset for viewing.

To be able to manipulate PDS data, users must add the detailed piping specification informationby translating the PDS piping specifications and importing them into the PlantSpace database.

PDS pipe specs contain information specific to the process and to the model itself - pipe size,

material, design, conditions, ratings, and so on. Completing this conversion process requires

both the pipe specs and the graphical model.

It's important to understand that the converted specs must be verified manually to ensure

completeness and accuracy. Some components can be mapped to standard PlantSpace com-

Bentley's provensolution for conversionof 3D models and pipingspecifications lets PDSusers move forwardwith MicroStation in a

way that is consistentwith the rest of theirinstallation.

  • 7/24/2019 Plant PDS Paper Making PDS Interoperable

    16/28

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 16

ponents. However, PDS is rarely used straight out of the box, and each application is cus-

tomized. PDS conversions almost always bring to light some level of data inconsistency, due

to PDS components that were not properly customized or added for the project. It is often

necessary to create missing PDS component catalogues in the PlantSpace environment.

It's also very important to understand that using the PlantSpace specification generator to

generate PDS specifications is always a more efficient method of converting the PDS specifi-

cations themselves. This is because the automated conversion of PDS specifications must

always be a two-step process involving configuration and validation, while using PlantSpace,

these two steps can be accomplished in a single step.

Once the conversion is complete, the import data in the JSM files can be placed into the

PlantSpace Advanced Modeling System (AMS) database. Users can then check out and

check in components from the database, and work on the PDS model in the PlantSpace

    environment.

When only the DGN and DRVs exist, the cost of conversion will be higher, because the config-uration logic and data structure behind the project must be discovered before conversion can

    begin.

The costs and end results vary according to the user's needs. Several issues need to be con-

sidered: What is the end use of the data? What is the life period of the data?

What is the quality of the PDS data? How much value is there in converting the data, and how

    completely should it be converted?

Because PDS is customized at each site, there is always some customization required to

align data models and work processes. So whenever PDS models are to be imported into

PlantSpace, some work is required to set up the environment. Depending on the complexityof the PDS data model to be converted, the user may seek help from Bentley with the first

    conversion.

Conversion from PDS to PlantSpace will never be a push-button process, due to the complex

customization that always occurs in the PDS system. However, Bentley's solution has proven

successful in meeting PDS users' needs on a project-by-project basis.

    6. PDS Deliverables Using Bentley Plant

    Flexibility is the Requirement

In today's competitive plant design market, effective data exchange is the insurance policyneeded to protect your CAD investment, your current work processes, and your resource

    investments.

As an EPC, do you agonize over how you will profitably bid your next project to meet your clients

changing data format specifications, using your current plant design system? Will your CAD vendor

continue support for the system you have become so comfortable with over the years?

  • 7/24/2019 Plant PDS Paper Making PDS Interoperable

    17/28

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 17

As an owner-operator, do you ever wonder what new data compatibility challenge you will

face when your supplier hands you the next deliverable? Do you want to select your contrac-

tors based on their engineering skills rather than the design system they use, and not be

penalized for the data format standards you require?

Whether you are looking to bid your next project with confidence or load your plant opera-

tional systems with trusted data, Bentley understands that flexibility is your requirement and

that risk is not an option.

    Choices Empower Creativity

The ability to exchange data among CAD systems provides you with more choices when it

comes to maintaining profit margins on your next project. In the same way, data exchange

helps reduce risk of schedule delay during front-end or subsequent loading of engineering

    data to plant operational systems.

Whether you are looking to get more from your CAD investment or streamline your handoverprocedures, XMpLant can create data in a format that is readily accepted by most CAD sys-

    tems including PDS and PDMS.

    Fast Track Commissioning and Start-Up

Bentley's DigitalPlant lifecycle solution is optimized to help EPCs and owner-operators

streamline handover procedures. The data format for XMpLant and DigitalPlant is based on

the ISO 15926 standard, letting users automatically exchange information and confidently sup-

port fast-track commissioning and start-up. This powerful solution assures owners that data

is complete, correct, and consistent at handover.

Data Exchange Solution for the Lifecycle

XMpLant offers EPCs and owner-operators new opportunities for improving business prac-

tices. For EPCs, XMpLant can save time and money by providing increased flexibility and

choice of CAD systems used on projects. In conjunction with Bentley's DigitalPlant solution,

XMpLant is part of a comprehensive data flow and data management solution that can speed

project timescales and improve time to market and quality of design, resulting in reduced

costs in the home office and the field. XMpLant and DigitalPlant also support technical audit-

ing compliance, allowing EPCs to easily fulfill owner auditing requirements at issue points

    prior to release.

For owner-operators, XMpLant saves money by reducing dependencies on specific CAD sys-

tems, data formats or disparate system-to-system interfaces. As part of a lifecycle solution,

XMpLant and DigitalPlant establish a trusted master source for technical engineering data

used by operations and maintenance. DigitalPlant and XMpLant enable automatic population

of procurement and maintenance management systems, saving time and cost, as well as

compliance with regulatory procedures. Owners can audit technical information at specified

issue points prior to final handover, saving further time and money by identifying potential

issues before they reach the field.

Owners can audittechnical information atspecified issue pointsprior to final handover,

saving further time andmoney by identifyingpotential issues before

    they reach the field.

    18/28

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 18

    Under the Hood

The XMpLant solution operates on native design files and a project RDBMS RIS (Relational

Interface System) database dump. It can be run from any workstation, since only the PDS

    files are required.

As a result of the processing, a 3D model that conforms to the XMpLant public domain

schema is produced. The object class definition returned from the process is defined in a

mapping file, which uses the RDBMS table referenced by the geometric objects as the pri-

mary identifier. This also defines which of the RDBMS columns will be processed and how

they will be mapped. The resulting plant model has the full hierarchical engineering structure

    of a process plant.

The XMpLant write solution creates native MicroStation design files (DGN format) and an

RDBMS RIS database dump. It does not require a PDS license or Bentley MicroStation API to

    access the data.

For piping models the components are instanced directly, and an RIS file is created with theRDBMS tables for the model. This removes the need to establish compatible catalogs in PDS.

The ability to transfer piping catalogs from one system to another offers huge time savings.

XMpLant reads the project RIS dump and updates it for every model written. The RIS files

containing the tables for the project and all piping model tables can be uploaded to PDS using

the RIS utility. The design files can then be copied to the relevant directory, after which they

can be accessed normally in PDS.

The PDS schema is used to control which column names are written to PDS. The schema can

be extended to cope with extra attributes as required. The class of plant item is used to deter-

mine the RDBMS tables to be populated, and the RDBMS links are added to the geometric

objects in the design file. This also defines which of the attributes are mapped to the RDBMScolumns and how they will be mapped.

XMpLant enables work-sharing and collaboration among companies with different CAD sys-

tems exchanging data with other plant design systems, including VANTAGE PDMS and others

in addition to PDS. The ability to exchange data between disparate applications into a neutral

model, without loss of information, also allows users to extend their CAD and resource invest-

ments by removing migration dependencies from retiring products such as PDS. XMpLant

enables contractors to be selected based on engineering skills, rather than the CAD system

    they use.

Owner-operators can reduce commissioning and start-up costs due to delays caused by datacompatibility and quality issues at handover. It's never been easier to archive plant engineer-

ing models, using the XMpLant format to extend the life of these models for the life of the

plant. And XMpLant helps reduce overall IT costs related to maintaining multiple system inter-

    faces.

While all these benefits can be easily achieved, it's important to understand that each design

system may be set up differently for every project. So a mapping exercise is always required

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 19

before the automatic data conversion process. Bentley provides a comprehensive data map-

ping and data consulting service for its own design products AutoPLANT and PlantSpace, as

    well as for PDS.

    7. PDS Data Handover Solution

PDS Data in a Standard, Open Format

Advances in the MicroStation V8 tag format provide a fundamental data storage and han-

dover concept that takes advantage of the portability of MicroStation design files. This is

especially useful for owner-operators who do not want the burdens of investing in or main-

taining a complex 3D design system that forces acute work-process changes and requires

specialized expertise. PDS model intelligence can now be easily delivered by EPCs in

MicroStation V8 format, letting owner-operators review and use 3D models in operations and

    maintenance.

Using the MicroStation V8 tags functionality, EPCs can save all PDS intelligence to a tag dataformat inside a V8 file. This eliminates the need for maintaining the PDS model or its intelli-

gence, and provides a simple yet effective turnover option at the end of the project.

MicroStation DGN file format gives owners a wide range of options for adding value to their

    PDS investment, such as:

Viewing and querying plant data held in DGN or DWG files, using Bentley View - a free,

    easy-to-use viewer.

Viewing and querying plant data held in DGN or DWG files, using Bentley Navigator - a

    powerful, easy-to-use 4D and 5D simulation tool.

Extending tag data held in a DGN file to include materials system information or business

system data from SAP. This solution also affords a logical migration path to a data ware-house implementation strategy, since data can remain in the DGN file until the ware-

house strategy is ready to move forward.

Using simple isometric sketch tools to capture as-built changes in DGN files.

Implementing such a solution will bring incremental value to operations and maintenance of

plant facilities now and in the future, by lowering initial and ongoing costs of creating con-

    struction maintenance and inspection isometrics.

Data Warehouse Insures PDS Data Fidelity

In capital projects, more and more owner-operators are using data warehousing technology

to capture data from technical information such as models and documents handed over by

contractors. This information is extracted from a multitude of different design systems.

Owner-operators and some EPCs use data warehouses to manage the fidelity (consistency,

completeness, and correctness) of information handed over by contractors, and then to popu-

late operations and maintenance systems - saving significant time and money during handover.

PDS model intelligencecan now be easilydelivered by EPCs inMicroStation V8 format, letting owner-operatorsreview and use 3Dmodels in operations

    and maintenance.

  • 7/24/2019 Plant PDS Paper Making PDS Interoperable

    20/28

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 20

Data warehouses are further used to manage subsequent engineering changes during opera-

tions. Some EPCs use data warehouses to manage data handover to clients, as well as any

    formal change requests.

In a recent survey of PDS users, 80 percent of respondents said that having better change

management - such as revision control, audit trail, and design history within the PDS environ-

ment - would make them more competitive.

At the core of Bentley's DigitalPlant solution for handover is eWarehouse - a repository of

engineering data that improves the quality, visibility, and reliability of data coming in from mul-

    tiple systems.

The solution uses the XMpLant schema to capture PDS technical data associated with a

    physical asset and populate eWarehouse.

While PDS design tools focus on design and engineering, eWarehouse is designed to capture

and store a full change history of PDS data for the entire lifecycle of the asset. eWarehouse

provides the perfect complement to the PDS design system, with change control that enables

change prevention, change reporting, and change impact analysis.

To streamline the engineering process, a major engineering contractor uses DigitalPlant to

bring together information from vendor and internal tools - including Bentley AXSYS,

SmartPlant P&ID, and InTools - and share this information in its project execution and man-

    agement environment.

The arrows in this diagram show different types of information being extracted from each tool

    and shared by other applications.

The engineering contractor built most of these interfaces, demonstrating the flexibility of

Bentley's DigitalPlant - not a closed environment with limited possibilities, but one that is truly

open and proven, including integration with SmartPlant.

In a recent survey ofPDS users, 80 percentof respondents said thathaving better changemanagement such asrevision control, audit

trail, and design historywithin the PDS environ-ment would make

    them more competitive.

  • 7/24/2019 Plant PDS Paper Making PDS Interoperable

    21/28

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 21

By effectively managing and automating transfer of data across projects, the engineering

contractor reduced work hours by more than 15 percent. For example, time savings result

from new work processes the contractor was able to adopt around P&IDs. By managing data

at a component level, the contractor can proceed with design and procurement on individual

pieces of equipment, without having to wait for sign-off on the relevant P&ID.

    A Scalable Handover Solution

Not all projects are ready to implement a data warehouse - possibly due to existing contrac-

tual constraints for handover, or perhaps data is not ready. In addition, many project teams do

not think about handover to operations until late into the projects. So in many cases, users

will want to migrate incrementally towards a total warehouse solution. The key to long-term

success is the neutrality of the warehouse repository and its ability to consolidate all source

data into a common format, cost-effectively and at any time.

eWarehouse has a powerful data consolidation engine that takes data from a variety of

sources, including PDS, and ensures that data is stored only once - so technical data isconsistent, correct, and complete. Data is stored in an open, neutral format. Storage, pres-

entation, and business rules are independent of the source that created the data. These

are requirements for lifecycle data management, in which data and assets must be viable

    over decades.

PDS design tools do not focus on data interoperability, but on data creation within the rules of

PDS design applications. The eWarehouse solution for PDS users is extensible, in that it is

designed to publish and retrieve information across a variety of sources including systems for

    procurement, document management, and maintenance.

Proven Technology, Available Today - Client Handover Case Studies

A major integrated energy company began its eWarehouse implementation as the basis for

collecting and validating data from EPC contractors on a set of four projects. eWarehouse is

now being used on three further projects, including two brownfield sites. The data is used to

populate operations and maintenance applications for each project. Because data integrity

throughout operations is critical to this company, it implemented eWarehouse Management of

    Change (MOC) module.

The MOC module works in conjunction with the company's maintenance management sys-

tem, MRO's Maximo, to manage engineering changes to assets and ensure engineering infor-

mation is kept up to date. MOC enables all engineering changes to be managed centrally, and

allows eWarehouse to interface with maintenance and document management systems toensure data is consistent, correct, and complete.

For another leading energy company, eWarehouse performs a variety of roles at several sites.

Most significantly, eWarehouse is the central point of data collection for a major offshore

drilling platform. In this project, eWarehouse is responsible for collection, consolidation, and

publication of data received from EPC contractors, and also for managing interactions among

the contractors. eWarehouse Physical Interface Management (PIM) lets the company man-

  • 7/24/2019 Plant PDS Paper Making PDS Interoperable

    22/28

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 22

age construction responsibilities, and enables early diagnosis of issues with contractors that

could cause schedule or delivery problems.

Each contractor can view tasks for which they are responsible, and request changes. The

requested changes are cleared through eWarehouse MOC environment. When a contractor

requests a change such as moving a delivery date, the information is stored to await approval

or rejection by the interface management coordinator. When construction is complete,

eWarehouse will serve as the basis for operations and maintenance applications.

These methods of data handover may be sufficient performance measures for some projects,

but the requirement to ensure completeness and correctness of PDS data is fast becoming

the standard. In this case, eWarehouse can apply standard user-defined rules and logic to

determine data correctness and completeness. By integrating the eWarehouse Data Quality

component, users can determine the exact quality of the data that has been transferred to

and from the PDS system. This provides a remarkable contract performance benefit when

    ensuring deliverable quality during handover.

    8. Deploying the PlantSpace System and Leveraging the PDSKnowledge Base Investment

    It's All About the Data

The industry seeks to reap the productivity benefits of data-centricity - such as the ability to

collaborate across time zones and geography, and the power to manage change at a new

level of granularity. Technologies such as these will enable fundamental change in work

    processes.

Business alliances and acquisitions are occurring because the market demands more and

more interoperability, as different vendors provide separate parts of the puzzle. Standards are

not yet universal, so effective data reuse still requires cooperation and knowledge sharing.

Choosing the right partner is critical to capturing the benefits of technology and meeting the

    lifecycle challenge.

Determining a PDS transition strategy requires careful evaluation of risk and rewards. In

selecting a partner for lifecycle decisions, it's important to consider vendor market presence

and stability in order to achieve technical goals and return on investment.

Your Data Is Safe With Bentley

Meeting the mission-critical needs of our users has always been Bentley's objective, and

MicroStation V8 delivers on that promise in several exciting ways, CTO Keith Bentley says.

MicroStation V8 represents a significant step forward in the evolution of Bentley software

and services, he says. The new file format of MicroStation V8 will expand MicroStation

capabilities in many areas, and will ultimately let users add more intelligence to their models,

improve MicroStation reliability and robustness, and advance interoperability by allowing

direct reading and editing of DWG files.

    evolution of Bentley

    software and services.

Bentley has done very well with the existing DGN file format, especially considering that it

was introduced in the late 1970s. While other vendors may introduce a new file format with

each release, Bentley has been careful to maintain a high degree of backwards compatibility

from MicroStation initial release right through MicroStation/J.

However, supporting the enhancements PDS users had long demanded called for a more

advanced file format. Bentley developed the V8 DGN format with capabilities to meet these

demands, yet with legacy compatibility with the older MicroStation/J DGN format.

As an engineering firm that necessarily uses multiple CAD platforms, we look forward to

using MicroStation V8's ability to access DWG and DGN data without the hassle of transla-

tions, says Dan Steeley, director of CAD services at LJB, Inc. The interoperability features

will also be invaluable in this process.

The new MicroStation V8 DGN file format can accommodate a range of data types

including all DWG drawing data structures. As a result, MicroStation V8 can open and

process a DWG file just as it does a DGN file. Users can perform all MicroStation opera-tions on the contents of a DWG file, just as i f it were originally produced by

MicroStation. Conversely, users can write the changes made in MicroStation V8 to the

original DWG file, without any sort of translation.

In short, MicroStation V8 file format is a superset of both the MicroStation/J and DWG file for-

mats, with many added capabilities as well.

Bentley has a long and solid history when it comes to data and file format support. This

makes Bentley the choice among PDS users who wish to remain with a market leader in

    data fidelity.

The PlantSpace Design Series proved to be an efficient solution for the task, due tothe ability to integrate legacy PDS data, as well as its fast learning curve and great

productivity. The PlantSpace system was very efficient for this work, significantly

increasing the productivity of the designers, and making a big difference because

we were able to reuse existing PDS data.

A Step Along the Path, Not Over the Cliff

The cost benefits of Bentley's plant solution include:

Low seat cost, or the cost to deploy the required functionality for each design seat.

Typically, the cost to install a Bentley solution is one-third that of our competitors.

Deployment time required to install the software with all associated project require-

ments, and have the software up and running. Clients tell us deployment time is typically

less than half that of competitive products.

Operational costs for ongoing support of each design seat. Here, Bentley solutions offer a huge

advantage over the lifetime of a project. Rather than requiring one IS staff member for every

five design seats, a single IS staffer typically supports 20 to 30 seats of Bentley software.

    The PlantSpace system

    was very efficient for

Proven Solutions for the World's Largest Projects

The Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) Project near Richland, Wash., a $5.7 billion design-build-

commission project for the U.S. Department of Energy, was awarded to Bechtel in December

2000 and is scheduled for turnover in 2011. For more information, visit http://waste2glass.com.

This is the world's largest radioactive waste vitrification plant, approximately the size of two

    nuclear plants combined.

The plant will process 53 million gallons of radioactive and chemical wastes, a legacy of more

than 40 years of plutonium production at the site from the Manhattan Project and the Cold

War era. The processed waste will be blended with molten glass and poured into stain-

lesssteel canisters, welded shut for stable storage.

Design and engineering of the WTP project is being accomplished using the largest combina-

tion of Bentley plant, building, civil, and content management tools ever assembled for a sin-

gle project. These products let WTP project engineering meet isometric generation sched-

ules, and enabled distributed engineering among engineering teams in Hanford, SanFrancisco, and Frederick, Md. Challenges faced on the WTP project have resulted in numer-

ous enhancements that are now part of Bentley's 2004 products, providing value to all Bentley

    users.

    Project scope includes:

Four major structures, one with a footprint the size of four football fields, and balance of

plant including underground and outside areas

More than 840 pieces of equipment

1 million linear feet of piping (572 different system codes)

    52,000 pipe supports to date

    1,000 miles of electrical conduit

27 million cubic feet of building volume

Bechtel Corporation has a Global Subscription License Agreement, and the WTP project

takes advantage of the ability to access any Bentley products as required. The project has

been covered by a Bentley SELECT agreement from the time Bechtel was awarded the proj-ect in December, 2000.

    Workflow Efficiencies from Bentley

In the beginning stages of isometric production, there was concern that project would not be

able to meet the scheduled number of drawings required to support the ongoing construction

effort. Bentley's consulting and services group became an integral part of the on-site project

team, in the trenches, recommending changes in the workflow and involving Bentley software

development to make modifications for a more efficient process with more detailed informa-

tion. Today, isometric production has met the 10,000 linear feet per week required to keep

    ahead of construction.

    Visualization Improvements

Bentley Navigator is used routinely as the design review tool between the Richland main

design office and subcontractors and is also used for visualization and construction sequenc-

    ing at the construction site.

    26/28

    Making PDS Interoperable p. 26

Additionally, the ProjectWise Integration Server has been used to integrate the 3D model with

Hanford WTP material specification, procurement and stock code systems, for color-coded

visual review of the status of materials. This integration allows easy visualization showing

whether a material item is on a material requisition or has been delivered, or whether a spe-

cific spool has been issued or installed. This has saved hours of reviewing stacks of paperreports, and makes any omissions stand out prominently, allowing for quick and easy remedy.

    More Effective using Bentley

Bechtel National needed to use the 3D model in multiple locations, maintaining both security

and configuration control. However, the Department of Energy (DOE) imposed very stringent

requirements regarding the access to data throughout the design process.

One major obstacle was the fact that the 3D model used to produce the deliverables could be

accessed and modified even after extracted drawings were produced, checked, and issued.

Bentley consulting and software development worked to develop new functionality for 3D

model database access control, down to a component granularity, based on user roles, work-flow and design status. This was implemented into the PlantSpace 3D Model Control System

(MCS). As a result, WTP was able to satisfy DOE audit requirements and release a $3 million

    hold on construction progress payments.

    Managed Environment Description

ProjectWise has been implemented to control all project documents and deliverables, in com-

bination with MCS. ProjectWise manages more than 230,000 documents.

The building discipline uses ProjectWise to control the architectural, structural, and HVAC

portions of the 3D Model on a file basis, while the plant discipline uses MCS to control equip-

ment, piping, and conduit and raceways. ProjectWise is used to produce up-to-date back-

ground files, which are attached as reference files for equipment and piping design.

Due to the size of this project, work is distributed to offices in San Francisco and Frederick,

Md. ProjectWise and MCS are used to control and synchronize the design effort, allowing the

best use of personnel and resources across Bechtel offices.

    9. Value Proposition of Bentley's PlantSpace Modeling Solution

There are several unique advantages Bentley can provide to PDS users:

Bentley offers the ability to minimize risk and maximize reward

Bentley provides a management framework that will:

Coexist with Intergraph tools, so users can retain their investments

    Retain MicroStation stable infrastructure

Provide access to proven alternative tools to offset risk

Provide a more open and robust managed environment

Manage both existing tools and new alternative tools

  • 7/24/2019 Plant PDS Paper Making PDS Interoperable

    Bentley's subscription-based licensing offers a low-cost, low-risk approach to attaining

    these advantages

Bentley partners with users as they work through this strategy

Global User Resource PoolAnother important advantage, which must be highly considered when evaluating your PDS

transition strategy, is that Bentley Plant solutions have the largest trained and globally avail-

able user base of any plant design vendor.

    Productivity Benefits Are Documented

Bentley supports and is committed to solutions that work in the MicroStation and

AutoCAD environments. Because these are the market's de facto standards, a large

number of designers are already trained in these products. High availability of operators

allows quicker staffing of fast-paced projects.

Another factor is time to productivity - how long it takes a designer to learn the software.Ease of use and quick training are critical. Users tell us it takes one-third as long

become productive on Bentley software, compared with competitors' products.

Scalability is also important. Significant benefits come from being able to use the same

software on large and small projects.

    10. The Logical Transition Strategy for PDS Users

The selection of a plant design system should be considered carefully.

A careful review of software vendors and their philosophies will identify Bentley as the mar-

ket leader - a conclusion bolstered by the 2005 report from market research firm Daratech,

    detailing Bentley's market position.

According to Daratech, Bentley's record 2004 revenue of more than $300 million and recurring

revenue of more than $200 million placed the company as the leading vendor in 14 plant soft-

    ware market categories, including:

Overall software sales and recurring revenue for plant creation

Software and services sales of plant-specific platforms

Software and services sales to owner-operators for plant creation, with revenue in this

category greater than the total of the three closest vendors

Software sales and recurring software revenue for conceptual plant creation

A plant design system must ultimately support projects and plants with lifespans of manyyears. To assure long-term success, the solutions chosen must be time-tested, proven, and

supported by a strong, stable vendor with an established track record. Clearly, that vendor

    is Bentley.

...Bentley Plant solutionshave the largest trained

and globally availableuser base of any plant

    design vendor.
