Sumpah Pemuda (The Youth Vows) 1928

• Sumpah Pemuda is the promises made by Indonesian’s youth on 2nd Youth Congress. First meeting was held on October 27th 1928 in Katholieke Jongenlingen Bond Building, Lapangan Banteng, Jakarta.

• Members of the Congress came from various youth organization’s representatives like Jong Java, Jong Ambon, Jong Celebes, Jong Batak, Jong Sumatranen Bond, dan Jong Islamieten Bond.

• In that congress, Mohammad Yamin was elaborating the meaning and relationship between unity and youth. In his opinion, there are 5 factors which could strengthen Indonesia’s unity, they are: history, language, custom law, education, and will.

Youthas The Agent of Change

• History has told us that many Indonesia’s changes were initiated by youth. Youth Congress was initiated by “Perhimpunan Pelajar Pelajar Indonesia” (PPPI) which then known as momentum of Sumpah Pemuda. Sumpah Pemuda’s day on 28 Oktober 1928 became a history and a proof that youth has a spirit on the country restoration.

#1 How do you see Indonesia’s current condition?

Leadership’s crisis (people’s lack of trust on executives). And media’s blow up which often blurring the fact.

Generally, Indonesia has a great potency to be developed. We own great national resources, and also creative people. But in the other side, there ‘s

apathetic group those who don’t care about others and act selfishly.

I’m so sad with Indonesia today. The have are getting richer, the poor are getting

poorer.

#2 What kind of Youth needed for Indonesia’s improvement?

Hard worker, honest, high initiative, and smart.

Those who inspire others to do positive things, rather than the one

who only criticize without giving any solution.

I guess youth should start to be an entrepreneur. Not only a job seeker, but also the job provider, and an

inspiring people.

#3 For Indonesia’s improvement, do you think politic is one of the way?

Yes, because government and politics cant be separated.

Yes, because politic is the power for managing the people. Its policy become a rule that should be obeyed. And certainly, the policy maker should be on the right

track first.

Of course, the policy manage the entrepreneur too.

#4 Should Youth be awake with Politics?

Yep, if we know nothing about politics, then who’ll choose those representatives? but the problem is, people won’t aware if they don’t see the benefits. Great politicians is the one who can grab youth’s

voice.

Definitely!

We should be awake with politics for changing this country. But most of the people are selfish

and forgetting others.

#5 Any young political icon that you think might change Indonesia to a better future?

I don’t think there’s any..

Anas Urbaningrum, he communicates what’s in his mind in social media

(twitter), which so far can be accepted logically.

Anis Baswedan, is also educational icon I admire. With his program, Indonesia

Mengajar , I guess he gives a great contribution to this country.

Nope.

#6 What kind of youth icon you’re hoping for a better Indonesia?

The smart, fair, hard worker, unselfish, and not only

searching for wealth and power.

He/she should be smart. And it seen from his track record. Not only the media darling or celebrities.

Now is the time for the smart people, not the beauty ones.

But the problem is, everyone looks smart when they are campaigning, but then suddenly look dumb when

they already get the position.

What’s The Insight then?

• Youth still care about this country and very critical towards government

• What Indonesia needs right now is independent youth who aware with political condition. Because, it cant be denied that political system rule this country.

Page 16: [plan politika] Indonesian Youth and Politics : (Un)Broken Youth Vow. Sumpah Pemuda 1928 (Slide by Plan Politika)

• Youth also still believe that politic is one of way to run the nation. So, don’t betray their trust!

• They are hoping for intelligent icon, not the one who all of sudden become smart when campaigning. Or in other words, Political Imagery is so yesterday!
