Session Objective

Page 3: Pitch with Confidence

Your participation - what’s in it for me

(WIFF)?

1. Oxygenates the brain to achieve

‘clarity’ for your pitch exercises.

2. Releases feel-good endorphins to

celebrate your confidence.

2. Feel alive as energy levels increase for

a Monday morning.

3. And of course…just to have fun and

learn something about YOU and about

your colleagues.

The Icebreaker Pitch – 2 min

Page 4: Pitch with Confidence

o Confidence is the belief of the self, or

the removal of self-doubt.

o Research indicates that we tend to

respond to or make assumptions

about attitude and feelings of others

based on word usage, style of

communication and body language

(Mehrabian, 1967).

o 7% - What you say - the words used to

express oneself

o 38 % - How you say it – the tone of

voice, inflection, conviction, passion,

and how you articulate

o 55% - How the body displays it –

movement, gestures, etc.

o Choice of ‘words’ can imply

confidence when spoken and engaging

others.

o Increase word usage such as: most definitely, certainly, sure, of course, absolutely, positively, guaranteed, etc…

o Decrease the usage of words that do

not demonstrate confidence such as: if, maybe, could, might, may, possibly, you know, just, like, etc,

o Be specific with choice of words when

speaking.

Word In the Pitch

The way in which you say it - is just as

important as what you say.

o Conviction - Acknowledge you have

something to offer. This will increase

confidence when pitching. Speak with

authority on things you know well and be

proud of it.

o Passion - With passion there is power in

the self. Turn passion outward to

demonstrate confidence. Passion will

affect tone, emotion, movement, and

inflection of voice.

o Articulation - Muscles around the mouth

need to work in balance with speed and

sound. When we speak too quickly we

won’t appear confident as we aren’t

making correct pronunciations.

The Way it’s Pitched

The Five Minute Pitch

Page 7: Pitch with Confidence

We not only listen with our ears, but also with

our eyes. We especially look at:

o Facial expressions - eyes, eye brows, face,

and mouth. Confidence is displayed when

direct eye contact is made. Diverting eyes

or downcast eyes does not represent

confidence.

o Torso – shoulders, back, and hips.

Confidence is displayed when shoulders

are back, and we are standing tall. When

you slouch, we appear as if we don’t know

what we are talking about (body posture).

o Arm movements – hands and fingers.

Confidence is displayed when our arms are

open and close to the body. Never fold

arms when speaking in conversation as it’s

not engaging.

Body in Confidence

o When you are tired, lack sleep, or your

body is in pain this will affect your

confidence mentally and emotionally.

o It makes it hard to accomplish things

the way you want - when you aren’t

feeling good. Which can result in poor

confidence in the self!

o Making healthy choices can affect

your confidence.

How do we develop confidence?

o Take an inventory of your strengths and weaknesses. KNOW THY SELF!

o Control your thoughts in regards to self doubt, and not allow your thoughts to control you.

o Be aware of your body language when interacting. This will give you a good indication how confident you are when speaking.

o Be aware of your words you are when expressing yourselves.

o Stand tall and shoulders back when speaking and interacting.

o Always maintain strong eye contact when speaking.
