• The idea was started in 2005 by Ann Ayers & Ellen McMillan, two Art teachers from Coconut Creek, Florida as a way for children to express feelings about world events and their lives.

• A Kinetic Sculpture that moves in the breeze to provide entertainment for all!

How to make a “Pin-less” Pinwheel

• These are safe alternative directions that do not require the use of a pin or nail.

• Easily created by young children• Uses readily found materials

Materials• Download the template on • www.pinwheelsforpeace.co

m or,

• an 8 inch square piece of paper

• A stick, pencil, chopstick or straw

• A chenille stem or wire• 3 “Pony” beads• Scissors• Ruler• Pencil• Crayons, Markers, • or other coloring tools

Steps

• Step 1- Gather all your materials

• Step 2- Cut the square from the template. If you are making your own pinwheel, without a template, you need to make an X on the square paper corner to corner. Place your ruler on the opposite corners, with a pencil draw a diagonal line. Repeat the step on the other side.

Steps Continued:• Step 3-

Decorate your Pinwheel – Include one or more “Elements of Design” or, write messages of Peace.

Putting the pinwheel together

• Step 4 –Use a whole punch to punch a hole in every other corner and the center. bend paper in center to do this.

• Step 5 - Cut the X – Leaving one inch from the center on each side

Preparing the stick• Step 6 – At the top

of your stick, wind chenille stem or wire around and twist three times.

• Step 7 – place 2 pony beads on the chenille stem

Steps – Assembling the Pinwheel

• Step 8 – Place the middle of the pinwheel on the chenille stem, then place the corners you punched on the chenille stem.

• Step 9 – Add the last pony bead

• Step 10- open both ends of the chenille stem, like wings. Trim if needed
