OLD WORLD® ORNAMENTS DONNA I love the Old World glass ornaments, they remind me of Christmas’s when I was young. The Inge glass ornaments from Germany are truly a work of art and a favorite of mine. It is the perfect gift.

MINI CYPRESS TREES PATTIThis year, I’ve chosen our mini Cyprus trees that can be found in the greenhouse. Wrap the bottom of them with Burlap, tie beautiful Christmas ribbon around it with a bow, and voila! Beauty in your home instantly!!!

HOLIDAY WREATHS ZARRUSHoliday wreaths are my favorite season’s artwork–they hold the essence of nature and bring a pop of color inside and out, to make my home warm and inviting.

WHITE POINSETTIAS ANDREAOne of my favorite decorations during the Christmas season is white poinsettias. They can be added to any décor, they can be used as a beautiful centerpiece for your dining table and they also make an elegant hostess gift.

EQUESTRIAN PLATES SUE S.Like a scene from Bucks County Horse Park, this new collection of versatile plates can be used as wall décor or as a table setting. They capture that true Bucks County feeling!

SNOWGLOBES GREGMy favorite Christmas things are snowglobes. They remind me of all the excitement and wonder of Christmas as a child; the anticipation and “dreaming of a white Christmas”.

Our Lifestyle Team shares their favorite Christmas things–for the Tree, for the Home and for You!

Salty pretzels combine with sweet chocolate for these fun treats that make a yummy gift few can resist. In fact, you may want to make a few extras for yourself!

INGREDIENTSBite-size, waffle-shaped pretzels Hershey’s Kiss or Hershey’s HugM&M’s candy

INSTRUCTIONS1. Heat oven to 170º F. Set a number of bite-size, waffle-shaped pretzels (one for each treat) in a single layer on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, then top each pretzel with an unwrapped Hershey’s Kiss or Hershey’s Hug.

2. Bake for 4 to 6 minutes (the white chocolate will melt more quickly), until the chocolates feel soft when touched with a wooden spoon. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and quickly press an M&M’s candy into the center of each Kiss.

3. Allow the treats to cool for a few minutes, then place them in the refrigerator to set, about 10 minutes. Place handfuls of the candies in clear plastic bags and tie on colorful ribbons. Enjoy!

To chase away the monsters that fright, the Light in the Night glows a green light.Too many is a crowd, so NO monsters allowed. I will help you sleep so no need for counting sheep. Just hold my hand tight or squeeze my tummy to light.A Light in the Night will suit you just right!”

“Each Monster comes with a storybook to read before bed, Which makes this perfect for Santa to bring in his sled! Available at Bucks Country Gardens.

Christmas Traditions FROM AROUND THE WORLD

In December, Christmas celebrations are taking place all over the world. The tradi- tions, celebrations and dates may vary from country to country, but the spirit remains the same everywhere. Compare the traditions you celebrate with some of the ones that take place around the world.

Did you know Christmas in Australia is actually in the summer? The celebration of this holiday happens during the student’s summer vacation. Most of their holiday celebrations and activi-ties take place outdoors. So, instead of white snowy scenes there are blue skies and sunshine! One of the most popular events of the Christmas season is called “Carols by Candlelight”. At night, people gather outside to light candles and sing Christ-mas carols to bring in the holiday cheer.

In China, the Christmas tree is called the “tree of light” and is decorated with beautiful lanterns and flowers. The festivities include making red paper chains, which symbolize happiness, to decorate the tree. Many families paste red paper pagodas on the windows and light their houses with paper lanterns.

In France, the Christmas holiday and festivities begin on St. Nicholas Eve. This day is filled with gift giving between friends and families. On St. Nicholas Eve and Christmas Eve, part of the tradition has children leave their shoes by the hearth, so Pere Noel or Father Christmas can fill them with gifts. In the morning, the children awake to sweet treats and chocolates in their shoes.

Today, LED (Light Emitting Diodes) Christmas lights are available in a much larger variety of colors and sizes than traditional Christmas lights. Whether you prefer purchasing bulbs and stringers separately, prelamped strings or icicle lights, find it all in LED. The more you light up, the more energy you save.

COLOR AND VARIETYLED colors are strong and vibrant, offering all popular colors from red to green, as well as a variety of whites ranging from warm white to cool white. LED Christmas light strings and bulbs come in a great variety of styles, sizes and shapes.

LONG LIFELED lights are designed to last for many years, in both construction of the physical bulb and the technology of the LED. An investment in LEDs guarantees many more years of use than that of incandes-cent lights.

UNIQUE FUNCTIONSThe diodes and the integrated circuit board allow LED lights to offer fun technology in decorating, including dimming light, morphing light, and color change. Dimming LEDs use the ability to control the

amount of power being sent to the diodes, sending less for dim light and more for bright light. Morphing LED lights slowly fade between different colors, and color change flash from red to green. Falling icicles and blizzard lights are another fun LED holiday light, with LEDs chasing down tubes to simulate the appearance of falling snow.

ENERGY SAVINGSEnergy Star testing has shown that 140 LED lights can be powered using the same amount of electricity needed to power just a single 7-watt incandescent bulb. That is roughly the equivalent of two LED light strings compared to a single bulb.

DID YOU KNOW?One of the best things about LEDs is that they are great for the environment, which is very important to many people including us here at Bucks Country Gardens. Landfills benefit from the decrease in waste, including the reduction in annual disposal of the glass bulbs, wires and other components of the products, as well as the packaging. To see various types available, stop by to see our store decorated with all the different LEDs.

DOUGLAS FIRA Douglas Fir is the perfect pick for a family that likes a big and full tree with a wonderful fragrance. While most species of Firs have a neat, tapered shape, the Douglas starts out wide at the bottom, and stays wide all the way up the tree. The needles are long and very soft to the touch. The sweet, citrusy aroma of a Douglas Fir is as distinctive as it is enjoyable.

Fresh CutChristmas Trees

FRASER FIRFraser Firs have short, stiff needles that are deep green on the topside with a silver tint on the underside. Many feel this gives the tree an additional glow when they turn on the Christmas lights. A Fraser Fir is prized for it’s long needle

retention. The tree will stay fresh for the entire holiday season and the branches are firm and strong–capable of holding just about any ornament or family heirloom. While considered to be a full tree, the branches leave

enough space to allow your ornaments and lights to be hung on the inside of the tree, providing more depth in the tree’s appearance.

The Fraser fir has been used more times as the Blue Room Christmas tree (the official Christmas tree of The White House) than any other type of tree.

Keep your tree smelling great all season: Clip off a small bit from the end of 10 branches every day or two. Pick branches that are buried beneath others so the clipped ends won’t show. Clipping the branches exposes the interior of the branches, releasing that sweet fresh-cut tree fragrance!

Count Von Hebel has been busy for the last year perfecting his Fabulous Tree Grove, and he can’t wait for you to see it. Here’s a peek at what’s in store when you visit:

In the far reaches of the north, The Count found the Slim Max-well tree. A beautifully layered, prelit tree with natural looking needles that shimmers when lit. The Iced Aspen Layered, a majestic, full sized tree was discovered by The Count, just after it was sheathed in a beautiful layer of frost. From deep in the forest, during a northern wintery snowfall, came the Flocked Balsam, a layered tree imbued with the magic of Christmas so the snow clinging to its branches does not melt.

The Count found a couple of new fir trees and a spruce tree that will be a splendid addition to your Christmas décor. The Layered Austin combines both layering (shelves of boughs) and indexing (the in-and-out length of boughs on the same level) to provide hanging room for your ornaments. The Carolina Pine is a stately Frasier Fir with long graceful lines. The Dartmore is a classically styled spruce tree that will be the centerpiece of your Christmas decorating.

These and all of Count Von Hebel’s trees, from the 2’ table top styles to the grand 12’ trees, are constructed from PVC, PE, or a combination of PVC/PE; are fully hinged; are strung with clear lights or multicolored lights; and offer the best value for your Christmas decorating dollar. Shop early for the very best selection of the very best artificial trees in the region.

Dish gardens and terrariums make great holiday gifts for that special gardener on your gift list. At Bucks Country Gardens, select from a variety of ready-to-go custom dish gardens and terrariums or create your own.

Creating your own dish garden is quite easy. Dish gardens are containers of mixed foliage and flowering plants in a shallow decorative pot, tin or basket.

To make your own dish garden, simply choose a decorative holiday container and a mix of flowering and foliage plants. Pointsettia, Cyclaman and Christmas Cactus are among the popular choices for holiday color. Add a delicate fern and some English Ivy along with a few pine cones and a bow and you will have created a beautiful, everlasting centerpiece.

Terrariums, another great gift idea for the gardener who has everything, have recently become increasingly popular. These self-contained eco-systems of miniature foliage plants are easy to maintain and fun to make for adults and children alike. Choose from a wide collection of glass vessels or covered terrariums. Next, add a thin layer of Horticultural Charcoal, a layer of crushed river gravel and a layer of African Violet soil. Select a few mini foliage plants, such as Bella Palm, Polka Dot plant, and a mini Frosted Fern. Add a pop of holiday

color with a mini Pointsettia or mini African Violet and some brightly colored Reindeer Moss and your terrarium is almost ready for gift giving. Personalize your terrarium

by adding some accents, such as a festive decorative little bird or critter, a few mini pine cones and pine twigs.

Dish gardens and terrariums are both excellent ways to spread

the joy of the holiday season and your love of gardening with those around you. Our Greenhouse staff is happy to assist you with all you need to successfully give that perfect gardening gift.

See page 28 for our Terrarium Seminar schedule.

Welcome...By the time you read this, you’ll most likely have discovered we’ve changed our coupons in this issue of Picket Fences–many of our readers look for the coupons first. Some have even been seen removing them and discarding the magazine. That’s one of the reasons we removed the coupon page from the magazines that we distribute in the garden center. Well…now they’re back.

Just a few years ago, we used coupons to measure the effective reach of our advertising. Were people seeing our ads and if so, were they reacting and visiting the store? Our sales were not driven by coupons, but by in-store promotions, an inviting store filled with the right products and friendly, helpful people who care about you–our customers.

Today, customer loyalty is being eroded by the latest and greatest deals and discounts. Big box stores have partnered with national brand products to lower retail prices below cost and backed that with blanketed marketing that smothers the local indepen-dent. Daily coupon sites have turned once loyal consumers into bargain hunting, price shopping, won’t go there without a coupon business killers. Half price deals are in every newspaper, magazine and web site. Why would you go anywhere and pay full price?

We started using coupons to help drive business and recover from the devastating effects of the economic crash of 2008 and 2009… and I think it worked. You supported us in record numbers last year and again

this year and helped us regain a sound business footing and we are grateful. Our decision to saturate our community with coupons was a good one.

So, why would we want to change a marketing strategy

that works? It’s very simple. Coupon redemption drives prices higher. Businesses need to make up for the discounting somehow and that means higher mark

ups and higher prices. We will continue to use coupons

to help drive traffic, but we will not make you coupon dependent

and we will not raise our prices to pay for coupons. There will no longer be a coupon for everyday of the year in each magazine and direct mail campaign. What there will be are coupons for special items we’d like you to consider and special times we’d like to see more of you. And there will be more than enough regular product specials and in-store promotions to make you happy to stop in without that coupon in your pocket.

Now, before you go looking for the coupon page if you haven’t already, please take a few minutes to page through the magazine. I’m sure there will be something of inter-est to almost all of you… And as a special thanks to you, our Garden Rewards Club, there’s a coupon just for you for an extra discount during our Christmas Open House Preview Night, November 4 from 4–8pm.

A great BIG thanks to all of you who have supported Bucks Country Gardens this year and every year, coupon or no coupon.

Tom Hebel, President of Bucks Country Gardens

Twenty years ago, an intern from SUNY Cobleskill stepped through

the door at Bucks Country Gardens. He had a level of experience that few his age attain. You might say that he had horticulture running through his veins from the time he was a little boy.

I agreed to the internship with one condition: The intern would be willing to stay after graduation and become a

full-time employee. I could have never imagined twenty years later, that would still be the case.

As an integral member of the Green Team from the beginning, Darryl’s responsibilities focused on sales and customer service. He did such a great job that his custom-ers knew his day off and often avoided shopping on Thursdays. Darryl still has Thursdays off, but almost every-thing else has changed. In addition to seasonal weekend

customer service, Darryl spends his time overseeing the purchasing for almost every department, manages our computer hardware and software systems, and, as a senior manager, is a member of our Executive Committee helping to shape the future of our business.

We congratulate Darryl on twenty years with Bucks Country Gardens and look forward to many wonderful years to come.

This season, The Boutique at Bucks Country Gardens continues to offer up to the minute fashion. You’ll be “right on” in the trend setting this year! Of course, we have many new additions to our ever growing boutique! Come in and try on new Corky’s footwear, Lilywhite’s faux fur scarves and Mudpie’s knit vests, hats, scarves and bags. While here, take a glimpse at our fashion and fine jewelry. You’ll find the infamous Viva Beads, along with fine sterling silver jewelry by Kameleon and Halia.

Remember, just as the 50’s and 60’s are back, the 70’s fashions are high on the list of carryover trends this year as well! Still have those flares and wide leg pants? Well, they’re back, as well as the “biker and punk” trends. Also, keep an eye out for two more aesthetics reappearing from the 70’s this season: bohemian and sophisticated glamour. When it comes to the latter, think of dresses that fall like shimmering water for the evening; high-waisted pants with an elegant blouse for a head-turning daytime look.

You can find her at the regis-ter interacting with customers, changing the road sign or pricing product. Since 2002, Sue Foley has been an integral member of the Bucks Country Gardens Team. Sue is a hard working, easy going, loyal and thoughtful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and co-worker. When I was

approached to write an employee spotlight on Sue Foley, I thought, “Wow, I couldn’t have received a better co-worker to interview.”

Sue was born and raised in the Hatboro-Horsham area, and grew up in a tight-knit family. She moved to central Bucks County with her husband, Bob, and to-gether they raised two sons, Bobby and Chad. Typical Foley vacations were at the ski slopes in the winter and at the shore in the summer. Sue kept her boys busy in athletics and she enjoyed simple pleasures such as playing ball in her yard. Of course, she still found time to dig in her gardens, a hobby she continues to enjoy today. As years went on, the family remained tight and today, they are all neighbors. Sounds great for when you need to borrow that lad-der or some eggs for breakfast. Living so close provides another plus-she can see her three grandchildren almost anytime.

Growing up, everyone would gather around the T.V. on Sun-days. You could say Sue is a real Eagles fan. She cheers for them

win or lose and can’t wait for the beginning of each new season as it could be a pos-sible Super Bowl bound year. When hearing that Michael Vick was coming to Eagles, she thought it could be a good chance for him. “He served his time, now he needs to get back on track and stay low for awhile. So far, he has done it.” She has followed the Eagles for as long as she can remember. Sue states,

“I feel it’s important to support your local teams.” She doesn’t mind watching a Phillies game either, if they are winning.

Like I said earlier, Sue is the best daughter, wife, mother, grand-mother, friend and co-worker you could ask for. Say hello to Sue next time you are at Bucks Country Gardens.

Fall has been proven to be the best time of the year to plant shrubs and trees, among other things. In the fall, the warm soil encourages root growth so roots can continue to grow until the ground freezes. In early spring, roots begin new growth, which develop at a fast rate, then top growth begins. When summer finally arrives, the tree or shrub which was planted in the fall has had over six months to become established and is better well equipped to deal with heat and drought.

Now that you know why fall is a great time to plant, here are some spectacular plants that we will be featuring this season at Bucks Country Gardens.

Showstoppers of the season

Japanese MaplesThe maroon leaf of a Japanese Maple provides interest to a gar-den throughout the spring and summer. But an often overlooked landscape addition is the green-leafed Japanese Maple. They are wonderful specimens with the same overall care requirements, but many put on a much more spectacular fall color show. The bright red leaves of varieties like ‘Aconitifolium’ and ‘Ryusen’ are unmatched by their red cutleaf counterparts. The Coral Bark, or ‘Sango Kaku’ Maple has a wonder-ful apricot and gold fall color among brilliant red stems, which provide interest all their own throughout the winter. Planted near an evergreen with a blue cast, such as Blue Atlas Cedar or Colorado Blue Spruce, these underused landscape beauties often steal the show come fall.

11

Chelone ‘Hot Lips’Also known as Turtlehead, due to its unique flower shape which resembles tiny turtle heads, this native plant is easy to grow and easy to love. ‘Hot Lips’ has a wonderful bright pink flower that lasts from late summer into fall. It’s a nice, medium-sized perennial, growing about 2’ tall and spreading 24”–30” wide. It does best in partial sun but can tolerate full sun provided it stays evenly moist. It has a lustrous deep green leaf that makes the flower color “pop” even more! Pair it with Coral Bells, Lady’s Mantle, Goldenrod or fall Asters for a stunning combination.

Viburnum ‘Winterthur’Few plant species are as well rounded and necessary in a landscape as the Viburnums. And ‘Winterthur’ is a truly special member of the family. This native plant has faintly fragrant flowers in the spring, but its fall show is spectacular. Its multi-colored berry set is a favorite for the birds, while its fall leaf colors are a favorite for the homeowners. Plant them in a mass to give privacy to a back yard, or pair one with a Red-twig Dogwood and watch the reds compliment each other as the season changes. Planting more than one is recommended for cross-pollination and a greater berry display. Its tolerance of most soil types makes it easy to grow and hard to live without!

Clematis ‘Sweet Autumn’If you’ve been captivated by the blooms of the other Clematis flowers, the fragrant white, star-shaped blossoms of this vigor-ous vine steal the show every fall. It grows effortlessly on any given structure, climbing to 30’ if given the opportunity. Plant in full sun for the best flowering, in a soil rich with humus or compost, and shade the roots with a groundcover as you would any other Clematis. Cover an arbor at the front of your yard for that old-fashioned welcome from the road.

Oakleaf HydrangeaOakleafs are a lovely addition to a woods’ edge or partially shaded yard. They have a wonderful reddish-burgundy hue in the fall on large leaves shaped like an oakleaf…hence the name! Leave the dried flowers atop the changing leaves for a wonderfully refreshing autumn feel after a hot humid summer. When the leaves drop they expose the exfoliating bark, which continues to add interest throughout the winter. This plant is available in varieties from 2’ tall and up to 8’ wide. It is appealing all year long either as a single specimen or grouped together under a shade tree.

AnemoneThese fall-blooming perennials are great for late season color. Their maple-shaped leaf makes them a wonderful companion for Astilbes, Ferns, Azaleas and Cimicifuga. They do best in partial to full shade and a fertile soil. ‘September Charm’ is just that–a wonderful pink delight in the shade garden just as the kids return to school. Or plant one of the pure white varieties next to Solomon’s Seal for a lovely duo.

HelleboresThis beautiful evergreen perennial for the shade is a wonderful addition to any garden. Most varieties can tolerate a few hours of sun each day or so. Also known as “Christmas Rose” or “Lenten Rose”, the Hellebore family generally blooms when there are very few flowers in the landscape. The flowers come in shades of white, purple, pink and green. They are deer resistant which makes them a lovely addition to a woodland border. They have a low-growing mounding habit and the unique leaf shape adds an interesting texture when the plant is not in flower. Plant in front of Bleeding Heart for a complimentary leaf combination that also hides the yellowing foliage of the Bleeding Heart plant in mid-summer.

WHEN FOURTEEN COMPANIES JOIN FORCES, wonderful things happen. That’s exactly how the YMCA entrance gardens came to be in October, 2010. “Every single company we approached was not just willing, but happy to participate” says Tom Hebel, coordinator of the project. “When I told Gene Smith [former President/CEO of Central Bucks Family YMCA] he could count on us, I had no clue what that meant. All I knew for sure was when our horti-cultural community comes together, we get things done.”

A plan for the Entrance Gardens was created using the input of the Y staff, the project architect and an entire class of Temple Landscape Architecture students.

Thirteen area companies supplied top soil, mulch, river stone, boulders, landscape fabric, sod and more than 1000 flowering shrubs, perenni-als, seasonal flowers and trees, while Bucks Country Gardens supplied the equipment and labor for the installation. Today, the gardens inspire over 1500 daily visitors to the YMCA and stand as an example of people coming together in small ways to accomplish big things.

Perennials, shrubs and river rock create an inviting walkway between the new YMCA facility and the original farmhouse.

This plant palatte is carried throughout the YMCA gardens.

GOURDS CORRIEThe large assorted gourds are my favorite thing about fall. I’m like a kid in a candy store when I shop for mine! The white pumpkins and blue jarrahdale gourds are my weakness. I want them all!

PANICUM ‘RUBY RIBBONS’ GRASS BECKYPanicum ‘Ruby Ribbons’ Grass is a must-have for the fall season. The striking foliage takes on a wine-red color in the early summer and contin-ues to intensify through the season. This grass is great for adding texture and movement to your perennial beds and borders.

JACK-O-LANTERN TUB w/FALL MUM ALEXOver the years, I have given this item as a gift at least a half dozen times. People always LOVE it! It’s a quick and colorful way to decorate an area for fall.

PUMPKIN LANTERN TIFFANYThe tall pumpkin lantern is a must-have for the fall season. I can’t wait to put mine out, in front of the house with a small candle inside, tucked amongst my gorgeous fall display! Also makes a fabulous accent piece for a deck, front porch or patio.

SMART GLOVES FROM MUDPIE NANCYI love the new Mudpie gloves! These gloves have conductive fingertips that allow you to text or use a phone without removing them and keep you warm at the same time. Great for any fall outing such as a football game or just running around town.

JACKETS FROM WINDING RIVER TINAThe latest collection of fall jackets from Winding River in our Boutique is my favorite thing. They are perfect for chilly autumn days and are avail-able in the most flattering colors and silhouettes. They are also reversible giving you two jackets in one!

Our Garden Center Team share their favorite fall things–for the Garden, for the Home and for You!

We often use Liquid Iron to green things up around the garden center. On July 10th, 2011, we started using the sun.

Six hundred panels on an acre of ground will produce over 163,000 kWh of electric-ity annually; about one half of our total consumption.

After investigating various renewable energy options we made the decision to go ahead with this project about six months ago with Moore Energy. It was a perfect fit for us. We use a fair amount of electricity, have the place to put the solar field, had some investment capital, have a great bank willing to finance and a profitable business able to use depreciation and we found the right company to manage the entire process.

Without any one of those items, the project would not have been feasible.

We knew going in there would be a mixed reaction from the community. In addi-tion to the support of many, we were the recipient of criticism by a few. Federal and state renewable energy grants and tax credits are not seen as beneficial by every-one and politicians are always magnets for critique. We benefit from the grants and credits and we welcomed our elected officials to join our celebration. As expected, we received angry voicemails from people promising to never shop here again and we read letters to the editor questioning our business intelligence and comments online criticizing the politicians.

We believe our community supports renewable energy, energy independence, con-servation and a profitable local business. We sure do and we thank all of our friends and neighbors who join us in celebrating our solar electric project that will provide years of green, clean, local electricity at Bucks Country Gardens.

&&&&Q A

Corrie Snook, Green Team

SeptemberQ The weeds in my yard were out of control by the end of summer. Can I do anything now to avoid get-ting them next year?

A Try to prevent them from going to seed. The seed will survive the winter and produce the same weed problems next year. Weed-whack this month and clean up the plant debris. Mulch the beds for the winter and be sure to use a pre-emergent weed preventer in early spring.

Q My trees looked sickly this summer and I was told to wait until fall to fertilize. What should I use?

A Espoma Tree-tone is great for most trees, or Holly-tone for acid-loving plants. If you don’t see the plant listed on the Holly-tone bag, use Tree-tone instead. Fertilizer Spikes are another option, available for deciduous trees, ever-greens and citrus trees.

Q How do I get my mums to return next year and look as good as when I first bought them?

A Start fertilizing with pe-rennial food when you first see growth appear in the spring. Continue to cut them back until July 4th for bushy, perfect-shaped plants that bloom on time in the fall. Mums left in pots or planters over the winter will not come back again next year. They have a better chance of survival when planted directly into the garden.

Q What are the white sleeves I see on tree trunks this time of year?

A White sleeves are used to prevent buck rubbing–that’s when deer scratch the velvet off their antlers on the tree trunks to relieve the itch. Unfortunately, young trees are their favorite for this ritual and they can be severely damaged or killed by the deer. Buck rubbing becomes an issue in early September, so wrap your trees early and leave them wrapped until early spring.

Q Can I still prune my box-wood hedge?

A A light pruning of long pieces is okay this month, but shaping should be put

off until very early spring. If possible, wait until March or early April to avoid damage due to winter sensitivity.

OctoberQ Can I do anything now for grub control next year?

A Yes, Milky Spore is an organic grub control that should be applied in fall and spring. If ap-plied for two consecutive years, it can help to prevent grub problems for up to 20 years on your property.

Q Should I cut my orna-mental grasses back when they turn brown, or wait until spring?

A It’s more a personal prefer-ence than a rule. If you prefer the structure they leave behind, wait until spring to cut them back to the ground. Otherwise, cut them down in the fall. Either way, be sure to cut this year’s growth when the new green growth appears next spring.

Q How should I get my bird houses and bird feed-ers ready for winter?

A Clean your bird feeders with a dish soap like Dawn

and refill them with feed for any winter birds. A good “house cleaning” is recommended this time of year for bird houses. Remove bedding and use a light bleach and water mixture to scrub the inside of the house.

Q I’ve heard mixed messages about clean-ing out my perennial beds in the fall. What do you recommend?

A Plant debris left through the winter isn’t a great idea. It promotes fungal problems and a place for insects to lay eggs or hide during the winter. Cut back perennials and clean up the debris, but lay a 2”–3” layer of mulch in the beds to keep the plant roots warmer through the winter months.

NovemberQ How long should I water my new trees and shrubs?A You should continue to water until the ground is frozen. Give new trees and shrubs one thorough soaking around Thanksgiving to give the plant plenty of water during the win-ter when it can’t take up any moisture. Begin to water again in the spring when the ground thaws. Remember, any new plantings rely on you to keep them watered for the first full year.

Q My hollies looked ter-rible earlier this spring. What can I do to prevent this from happening again?

A Spray the leaves with Wilt-Stop later this month, and again in January and February to protect the leaves from the harsh winter winds and sun scald. Do this to all of your broad-leafed evergreens.

Q I heard it’s okay to leave some leaves on my lawn over the winter. Is this true?A Yes, a very light covering of leaf debris adds nutrients to the lawn. After all of the leaves have fallen and you’ve done your final leaf cleanup, run the mower over the leftover leaves which will serve two functions: A final lawn cutting is good for the grass to prevent matting under heavy snows, and the smaller leaf debris will add nutrients faster than whole leaves would.

Q Why is the tropical hibiscus, which I moved indoors for the winter, dropping all of its leaves?A This is common when the daylight hours get shorter and the plant is moved inside. When it’s used to full summer sun and sud-denly gets fewer hours in the house, it goes into shock. Just clean up the yellow leaves, keep it in the sunniest place you can, and re-member to water it as needed. Let it overcome the shock; no need to fertilize until spring. Be sure to use an insecticide, such as Bonide’s Housplant Insect Control while it’s indoors to keep bugs at bay.

Q I want to plant a tree other than Dwarf Alberta Spruce in my pots by the front door for the holidays. Any recommendations?

A In general, plants in containers need to be hardier than plants in the ground, since the soil temperature is colder above ground. Pots with soil left in them can crack through the winter, so use frost resistant and glazed pots instead of concrete or terra cotta–they are less likely to be damaged by freezing tempera-tures. We live in Zone 6, so find plants that are hardy to Zone 4. Green Mountain Boxwood, Norway and Colorado Blue Spruce, Arborvitae, Cap Yew, Hinoki Cypress and Green Velvet Boxwood are good alternatives for evergreen foliage all winter. Come spring, add them into your landscape!

In Your Own BackyardBUCKS COUNTRY GARDENS LANDSCAPE FEATURE

After adding a concrete paver patio to this

home, the homeowners found they were

left with very little usable outdoor living

space. The adults had a place to entertain

friends and family, but due to a steep slope

in the backyard, the children were left with

nowhere to play. This left the patio cluttered

with toys and furniture. The homeowners

wanted to create more usable space and

to make the little space they did have feel

bigger and more inviting. 1

Bucks C

ountry Gardens

27

Coming directly off the back patio, the steep grade elevation of over five feet left little to no usable space. We quickly realized the large hill remained on site for good reason. Just beneath the surface were large rocks and boulders, which required the use of heavy equipment to remove. Because the house was at a lower elevation than the backyard, proper grading became an important issue to prevent water from entering the basement.

The existing hillside was cut back over twenty feet allowing for the installation of a four foot high E.P. Henry Coventry Block retaining wall. By building the wall we were able to level a large area of lawn in the backyard and create a small swale to alleviate the drainage issues the homeowners were facing. The wall arced where it was closest to the patio to create a greater feeling of open space. To either side, we terraced the wall so as not to make it so dominating in the landscape. This terracing allowed for masses of flowering perennials and shrubs to be planted to soften the wall and provide wonderful color throughout the year. Carefully placed landscape lighting highlights specific plants and different aspects of the wall, but is not obtrusive in the landscape. Opening up the space allowed the family to have an area for entertaining friends and family while still having ample room for a swing set and play area for the children.
