P o l i t i c a l t u r m o i lThe King & Queen divided their time between London, Windsor and Brighton; living mainly at St James’ Palace. The alterations to Buckingham Palace, an extravagant rebuild ordered by his brother, was nearly finished but William hated the place and suggested that it should be made into barracks. It remained empty until Victoria became Queen. On the surface the nation seemed calm with a Tory government led by the Duke of Wellington. A new King necessitated a General Election which the Tories won but only by bribery and perversions in the electoral system with only a few people allowed to vote. The political situation was further exacerbated by the widespread distress of the agricultural labourers. Two bad harvests and the prospect of another cruel winter must have seemed almost unendurable to the rural poor. Throughout the autumn of 1830 there was a wave of violent disturbances, with machinery wrecked and ricks burned. The hated machines meant that less manual labour was required so the unemployed went to the towns and the factory owners took full advantage of this by paying poor wages. Children were much used, especially in the cotton mills where they could move more easily between the machines, and paid even less than the adults. This scandal was investigated by a labour committee in 1832 and I quote from this: “If it was an especially busy time, the children began work at 3am and worked until 10pm. During this time, 15 minutes was allowed for breakfast and 30 minutes for dinner. There was one further break of 15 minutes for a drink in the afternoon. Overseers patrolled the labour lines and if any children were found asleep they were soundly whipped with a heavy strap. The wages for these long hours were 3 shillings and sevenpence halfpenny for a 7 day week. Many died but this was not a

cause of concern with the mill owners who said there were many children looking for work and are easily replaced.The factory owners were, at this time, gaining enormous profits. They built themselves huge mansions, indulged in every available luxury filling them with foreign pictures, statues and furniture; many of these properties are now owned by the National Trust. The upper classes of society took full advantage of this new wealth by the purchase of shares and filling their coffers by marrying their sons to the factory owner’s daughters and their daughters to the factory owner’s sons. All this worried some of the nouveau riche and they eased their consciences by paying better wages and building special villages for their workforce with libraries, hospitals and village halls. Employment at these was much sought after, there were no strikes or unrest, success was in everyone’s interest so they did well for each other. Most of these owners were of the Non-conformist Faith, Methodists, etc which set them apart from the main stream. Things had to change and a new government led by Lord Grey, the head of The Whigs, decided on reform. Bob Davey MBE

Jubilee plans dominate most of our meeting time at present.

The Annual Parish Meeting takes place on Tuesday 19th June at The Blue Lion, 7.30pm.

All Village organisations are invited to give a verbal report of the year’s activities.

The Parish Council will give a report on the year’s progress. Parishioners will also have the opportunity, as at any meeting, to

raise issues of importance or simply ask questions of the Councillors. Please come along to give your views.

Many thanks go to South Pickenham Estate and the Packiri family for the restoration of the bus shelter following the vandalism last year. This bus shelter dates back, according to our records, to the coronation of her majesty so it is fitting that in her jubilee year it has been brought back to its former glory, although it was felt more prudent to tile the roof this time to prevent any further damage.By the time this is published and distributed, we will have celebrated the diamond jubilee with the village barbecue which, at the time of writing, looks to be great fun and good company. More details and hopefully photographs next month.The date for the Annual Parish meeting is yet to be confirmed - details will be shown in the notice board and, if possible, in the Pickenham Periodical. All will be welcome.

What’s On at Holme Hale Pavi l ion

St Mary’s Church, Houghton on the Hill

A House of God for well over 1000 years, it has stood as a place of worship through the reigns of 53 monarchs from

Athelstan (924-939) to Queen Elizabeth II (1952-present). No monarch has served the country and the church with such

faith, dedication and care for so long as our present queen. We humbly salute her

and congratulate her on her Diamond Jubilee.

This month we celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, marking the 60th year of her reign as the nation’s Sovereign and Head of State (she became Queen on the 6th February 1952, but her Coronation was not until the 2nd June 1953) – and no doubt many will enjoy the long festive bank-holiday weekend doing just that, celebrating with family and friends, going to street par ties and fetes, or perhaps even going into London to ‘soak up the atmosphere’. Others, like millions from across the world, will be content to follow the pageantry on television. And the Diamond Jubilee is wor th celebrating because it’s some achievement! For 60 years, the Queen has served both her country (only matched by Queen Victoria) and been the Head of the Commonwealth too. In all that time she has served her country in both good times and bad; seen various Prime Ministers (and Presidents) come and go and has gained a vast understanding and experience of the world and her role in it. Now of course we use the word ‘Jubilee’ to mark a special anniversary, celebration or ‘time of rejoicing’ because it has the same Latin roots as seen in the Latin word ‘Jubilate’ which means ‘O be joyful’. Indeed one of the most popular of Church Psalms, is Psalm 100 known as ‘the Jubilate’ because it begins ‘O be joyful in the Lord all ye lands’ and has been the basis and inspiration for many a hymn, such as William Kethe’s ‘All People That on Ear th Do Dwell’. This psalm invites people from across the world to offer a great shout of praise to the Lord and enter his presence with joy. It’s a shout that should not be given lightly or without due consideration, but a shout that offers loyalty and praise to God as King, and creator of the ear th. It’s a psalm which invites us to respond to a God, who not only loves us and cares for us deeply (which has subsequently be shown in the person of Jesus Christ), but one that invites us to rest confidently in his

saving grace forever, knowing that God has made us and loves us. God is holy and nothing unholy is allowed or can survive in his presence, but we are welcomed as his beloved children when we put our faith and trust in him. So today we quite rightly celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee giving thanks for all that Queen Elizabeth II has done for our nation over the past 60 years, but this psalm which no doubt will be used in many a church service to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, invites us to consider the one true King whose nature is unchanging, whose goodness and love will last forever. This invitation to acknowledge him is to all people, in every place and age – and that too is a cause for celebration! Jubilate!!

As part of the Pickenhams’ WI Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations we are pleased to sponser a ‘Childrens Fancy Dress’ with classes of 2 to 5 years, 5 to 8 years and 8 years plus. A book token will be given to the one voted first in each class. Mid Hood & ladies will be giving a ‘Children’s Tea Party’ for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June. We had quite a few things to discuss at our May meeting as there are one or two outings been arranged and also other bits and pieces of interest to discuss. This month our speaker Mr Steve de Roeck showed us some magnificent slides where he and his wife Jean went to New Zealand. There were very good photographs of all the sand dunes

which were massive, there were miles and miles of beach, and also lovely slides of red sunsets, different birds and other scenery. We all enjoyed it very much. Our competition was won by Mid Hood for ‘A Memento from a Long Distance Trip’. Our competition for June 14th is a ‘Pressed Wild Flower Picture’.

The Summer Term is upon us and this is always a very busy time. The children have been preparing for and taking their annual assessments in school. They have also been working on topics relating to the forthcoming Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympic Games. The children took part in Sports Relief Mile and raised £473 for this very worthwhile event. It is also the time when the Year 6 children are getting ready for their move on to high school. We are promoting our ‘Bring a Family Member to Lunch’. This gives family members the chance to sample our super school meals. Our whole school attendance is 94.37% which fantastic. We had 12 children with 100% attendance during the Spring Term – well done to them.We are trialling a new co-headship. Miss Barnacle has been joined by Mrs Norris and they will share the role of headteacher. The move to co-headship has come about for several reasons: •Mrs Norris achieved her National Qualification for Headship last July and allowing her to gain experience at this level will benefit the school. •Miss Barnacle (after nearly 12 years as head at St Andrew’s) would ike to have time to expand her nurture schools work, but still retains a strong commitment to the development of St Andrew’s. •The co-headship allows us to retain, and develop, our experienced senior leadership team, which will ensure the school’s continuing development. We are please to welcome Zoe Gabriele as a Parent Governor and also Frank Sharpe as a Local Authority Governor. We look forward to working with both of them.The change of status consultation from Voluntary Controlled to Voluntary Aided is progressing well. An open meeting has been held and there were no negative comments received. We now move on to the next stage of the consultation process. CENTRAL HEATING OIL Holme Hale and surrounding villages have a

chance to get cheaper oil this coming winter by ordering from Affinity, the farmers union.

We need at least 30+ people to attend a meeting with NRCC to be able to join this scheme.
