Advertising photography consist of artisanal shots of a selected product to make the product in question look desirable. Photography can manipulate a product by using different camera angles, and having one original product for photographic purposes that look better than the rest. An example of this would be the McDonald’s burgers - they look great in the pictures, but what you hold in your hand isn't necessarily the same.

JONATHAN KNOWLES

Jonathan Knowles is a advertising photographer based in London. He is one of the leading photographers of his generation and specialises in graphic still life. Jonathan has a unique photographic style and has won many award-winning advertising commissions worldwide. He has done work for the Schweppes company advertising their new brand of drinks and he shot the Black Sabbath 13 Album cover, as well as directing and filming the footage that is currently played on stage during performances.

Tom Kelley was an American advertising photographer who photographed Hollywood celebrities in 1940s and 1950s. He is best known for his iconic 1949 nude photographs of Marilyn Monroe which were for a magazine. Tom started off by taking photos for magazines then later his business shifted to commercial and advertising photography.

Fashion photography is a genre of photography devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion items. It is mostly seen in advertising and magazines and displayed on celebrities or models. Fashion photography has been around since 1856 and has changed its limits. As in 1856 woman were more limited to what they could and couldn’t wear. Now in the 21st century models are being able to wear as much or as less clothing as they wish. Fashion photography is a way of getting the public to want what the models are displaying whether it is clothing or make up. Fashion photography is used to catch the publics eye and is found on magazines, billboards, social media and newspapers.

WHERE IS FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY SEEN?

Fashion photography is seen in magazines such as ‘Vogue and Elle’. Fashion magazine Vogue is one of the most famous fashion magazines and was first published in 1916. Since it has had many famous faces feature on the front cover. Throughout the years there has been many different filters experienced with such as the original black and white which was used when fashion photography was first introduced to now there being colour. However fashion photography is now very controversial as many are against the models on the front covers always being skinny knocking viewers self confidence.

CECIL BEATON 1904 - 1980

Cecil Beaton is a famous fashion photographer. He was hired as a staff photographer for Vanity Fair and Vogue where he gained a unique style and love for becoming a fashion photographer. He achieved his dream when becoming a fashion photographer in the 1920’s. He then became a award winning costume designed for stage and film productions in the 30’s. He photographed people as famous as Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.

Horst Diekgerdes shoots for Elle, Numero, Harper's Bazaar, Another Man, Sonia Rykiel, H&M, and Uniqlo, always creating mysterious fairytale-like scenes that seem to have a dark side. He uses soft light and interesting outdoor and indoor locations. He tends to have the models pose in unusual positions which makes his style of photography unique.

LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Landscape photography is one of the most popular genres of photography. In the past landscapes were originally used primarily to fill in the blank space behind a person or scene by painters. Today, landscape photography is a very popular pursuit. Landscape photography is used to show the whole surrounding and is used mainly for nature photography.

Charlie Waite is one of the world’s leading Landscape photographers. He worked in British Theatre, lighting and design. Then gradually he went on to do landscape photography. He is the owner and founder of Light and Land, Europe’s leading photographic workshop and tour company. In 2007 Charlie launched UK Landscape photographer of the year. Charlie has a unique style that is shown through his photography. He has established a worldwide reputation for his particular approach to his work.

GALEN ROWELL 1940 - 2002

Galen Rowell was a landscape photographer and a mountain climber. He used to travel and climb mountains all around the world and capture some of the most incredible photographs. His effect of light and colour and his dynamic landscapes has been very popular among the viewers. For his work in nature and landscape photography Galen won several awards including Photographic Art and Science Foundation Award in 1999 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.

Landscape photography is found in many places and is sometimes used in advertising and fashion photography as a backdrop to the product. Landscape photography can also be found online. There are various websites that include landscape photographs which have been submitted by the public. Landscape has changed over time as it used to only be photographs of sunsets and mountains. It has now developed to include more urban industrial settings along with other scenes that reflect the human’s interaction with the world. Also it has changed as landscape photography has become more personal.

MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY Macro photography is an extreme close-

up photography usually using small items to then make them greater than life size. Macro photography is usually used to photograph insects/wildlife close up.

How to take a macro photo in steps -

1 - Switch to macro mode

2 - Use a tripod (this will help you to keep the photo level)

3 - Use flash

4 - Focusing

5 - Aperture

WHERE IS MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY SEEN?

Macro photography is mostly seen in nature magazines such as The National Wildlife and The National Geographic. Some are also found in galleries. Although Macro photography is more professional so are less likely to be seen on a day to day basis. How has macro photography changed?

The term ‘macro photography’ has changed its meaning over the years. Originally it specifically referred to photography where the image captured by the camera was the same size (life-size) or larger than the subject. However, the current meanings of ‘macro’ and ‘close-up’ have blurred and the two terms are now used almost interchangeably

HEATHER ANGEL

Heather Angel is a macro photographer. She abandoned her career as a marine biologist to become a freelance wildlife photographer. Heather's great passions are photographing mammals, plants and macro subjects. She has been doing wildlife photography in Britain for several decades, with her images appearing in magazines and books all over the world. Her work has been recognised by many awards in Britain and overseas.

FRITZ GORO 1901 - 1986

Fritz Goro was the inventor of macrophotography and a photographer specializing in science, published in the Life magazine and Scientific American, after he started his career as a photojournalist in Germany. For many photography critics and scientists, alike, he was at-once the most original and the most accomplished photographer of science who ever lived. Fritz Goro died in 1986 but has continued to be well known for his creativity and as the inventer of macro photography.
