This photo is an example of overcrowding in high schools, which is one
downfall that may cause families to consider homeschooling. However, the
busy lunchroom also exemplifies the social opportunities that some say
homeschooling lacks.
This photo of a crowded hallway at a local high school shows how some
students might feel as if they are just “lost in the crowd”.
This is a picture of associate principal Ms. Donovan hard at work
managing the phone, the computer, and numerous paperwork. Her
action of multitasking shows that public schools are unable to give the
individualized attention that some students need.
While traditional schools lack individualized attention, it is one of
homeschooling’s specialties! Pictured here is Mrs. Andres working with her
young daughter on one of her daily lessons.
Another benefit of homeschooling is the ability for children to study
and learn in spaces with which they are comfortable, like the
trampoline, for example.
Some homeschooled students prefer to study in more conventional
spaces, though, like the kitchen table. This is still a more familiar place
than a classroom for some kids.
A place that students in traditional education might choose to work on
homework, some homeschooled students perform all of their daily
lessons from the comfort of their bedroom.
The family we interviewed agreed that one of their favorite parts of
homeschooling includes getting to spend more time together as a family. In a
public or private school, these kids would be in separate classes, but at home
they get the chance to work together on assignments.
This is a picture of a previously homeschooled student working in a private
school. She had no trouble catching up to her private school peers and it’s
impossible to tell she was ever even homeschooled through this picture.
This is another example of a previously homeschooled student in the classroom
setting. The only indicator of homeschool experience might be that she is
working alone, but aside from that she is just like the other students in terms of
academic success.
This photo, also of a previously homeschooled student, shows that
homeschooled students are versatile in their ability to study anywhere and
everywhere, including the floor!
We concluded our presentation with this photo of the Andres family eating lunch
together on an average school day for them. This shows that while homeschooling
definitely isn’t for everyone, it can work well for some people and is a beneficial
alternative to traditional education.
