The staff was extremely welcoming and friendly. In order to describe the hospitability of the staff some participants invented the term „subtle awesomeness“.

Food was fabulous.

The island with ist beautiful nature offered a unique retreat experience by taking people out of their routines and allowing them to focus on their task at hand. The flowing transition between work and leisure time enhanced the teams´ productivity and caused that work didn´t feel like work.

The built environment allowed for individual working preferences – to balance time in group activities as well as making Wasan an opportunity for quiet reflection.

Wasan Island was a special place that created a sense of community and trust. It was highly supportive for building relationships.

Critical comments What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience? (N = 59)

Would suggest boosting the Wifi capabilities (investing in a few wifi hubs) for those groups who are working in the digital space.

But: The bad internet connection is an other good thing also... as it avoids having people spend the collective time looking at their emails and surfing the web... so keep the wifi connection but keep it a bit slow as the island invites to a slowing down posture... and disconnection from the real busy world...

The only comment I have about the physical setting is that a little soundproofing between the shared bathrooms and the bedrooms in the main lodge might be nice - just for enhanced privacy

My only criticism is that it is so selective. I know there are very good reasons for the selectivity, but I'm wondering if there is a way to offer a program that is open to a more diverse group of people.

Wonderful accomodations (although it was hard to share a room at my age)!

Sharing rooms is really difficult. In order to fully engage and contribute productively, you need to be able to retreat to a quiet place.

We would really appreciate having more healthy snacks between meals (e.g. fruit).

You might want to consider introducing a grove of birch trees by the Pavilion. The varieties/species of plants and fauna on the island deserve more study if you have not already done so.

The team assembled a group of great thinkers...although, it may have been good to have a bit more 'creative tension' within the group to surface new ideas.

9

Some participants felt uncomfortable with sharing a room. Other sources of complaint were the poor insulation between some rooms, the selectivity

of the program as well as the bad internet connection.

Participant comments about the staff What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience? (N = 59)

Excellent staff. I was not expecting to receive such incredible service while on the island. Evan in particular really made sure that our stay was comfortable and enjoyable. The great staff made it easy for us to focus on our work. The facilities themselves were also in great shape.

We were all so well taken care of by the staff that it meant that we could really focus on the work at hand.

It was such a good experience. Getting to stay on the island where everything was taken care of allowed us to focus our energy on the event and not on distractions. I'm so grateful to have had the chance. I think we got good work done, but also better understood the other charities we were working with.

The island itself is indeed magical, and the staff was absolutely amazing. I've never been this spoiled!

The freedom offered by our hosts to access spaces, activities, views, experiences that could keep our energy high was very effective in helping us to each keep our own being at high vibrancy.

Second, the experience of being on Wasan, and having our time so brilliantly curated by Volker and his team, demonstrated a way of collaboration, caring, and focus on quality that I believe we should strive for as an organization - a style we could only characterize as "Subtle Awesomeness".

Organized - everything was well p l a n n e d f r o m m e a l s t o accommodation, set-up of meeting rooms and relaxing areas.

The hospitality of the staff was top-notch and really enhanced the sense of being comfortable and welcome.

I was really impressed by the intentionality that the team put in everything that they did. The anticipation of needs and the c o n s t a n t e x c e e d i n g o f expectations.

Participants enthused about the incredible service and the constant exceeding of expectations. In order to describe the hospitality of the staff they invented the term „subtle awesomeness“.

The way you hosted us has coined a new term at CFC: subtle awesomeness. You were always there, always taking care of us, but in the most lovely and family-like way. The team coined the term and I've now adopted it when I think of the communications we send out and the way we interact with partners and champions. We want to be subtly awesome every step of the way. Personally, Wasan was a life-changing experience for me. I fully arrived in myself as a leader and am embracing that reality in a new way. The Island was stunning. And the hosts as beautiful as the surroundings. Many thanks for the experience.

Set t i ng - hos t and s ta f f we re professional and welcoming. Helped to ease the discomfort for someone like me who is an introvert.

Wonderful hospitality of host team - set the tone upon arrival and continued until departure.

the staff are a key part of the amazingness

The hosts of the island being so enthusiastic about Wasan created a great feeling.

Starting with the intentional hospitality of Volker, Alyssa and the entire team- every single detail was seen to with such care that you were enveloped in a very special space within the first 15 minutes of arrival and this continued throughout the entire time on the island.

The oppo r tun i t y t o participate in some deep thinking and dialogue w a s s t r e n g t h e n e d tremendously by the conditions of the island and those who operate it - serene, beautiful, and rejuvenating environ-ment matched by warm, generous and friendly people.

The Wasan team creates an appropriate ambiance: one of inclusion, creativity, and peace.

The staff at Wasan make the place incredibly special - everyone's warmth, sense of humour, deep intelligence, and generosity of spirit is wonderful.

Wonderfully gracious, accommodating, welcoming and talented staff.

Beautifully hosted space, beautifully hosted meals - there is a real mastery and artistry in this which impacts the whole experience deeply. Such a feeling of care, and pride and hospitality.

The team was very welcoming and supportive of everything we were doing.

Participant comments about the staff What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience? (N = 59)

Having attended many retreats, conferences and group events of various kinds I was struck by the exceptionally warm and congenial qualities of the location and hosts - crucial ingredients for endeavors of this kind.

The staff is simply amazing, and our stay at Wasan was greatly enhanced by their care, attention to everyone's well-being, and team work.

And Volker, Alyssa and all of the staff members (I include Eva in this) made it a very welcoming experience.

The staff was incredible, the food phenomenal and the spirit of love and care made being there very special and meaningful. Thank you!

Participant comments about the nature/island What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience? (N = 59)

It was a fantastic experience. The unique experience offered by the island helped attract the companies needed to support the session. Having them there, made it possible for us to do more for the charity -- truly set them up to grow and better serve those with Type 1. We'd love to repeat this again for other charities and come up with ways to do mini, scaled down version for other charities since a 40 hour island retreat isn't always possible. Thank you so much for hosting us and making it possible! Your island and the team was phenomenal!

Wasan is an excellent setting for creative team work. It's a place to execute big ideas and undertake projects that on land seem more daunting. The staff, the setting, the accommodations, and the overall atmosphere make this possible.

A wonderful setting for out of the box thinking, making connections, and letting go of the outside world. None of this would have been as effective in a hotel or conference center, not even close.

The purpose of the island is so important and the environment is so conducive to productive conversation. It really is a remarkable place.

The extraordinary environment which allowed for a very effective exchange

I was impressed by the peacefulness on the island - we felt removed from u n n e c e s s a r y distractions.

The unique place helped facilitate the creation of a safe space for sharing.

The specialness of making a journey away from typical urban environments made the gathering special before even arriving on the island.

Wonderful environment conducive to relaxed crit ical thinking and reflection. a very special place. A little magical.

The space - nature and the built environment - enhance the goals of having a retreat, taking people out of their routines and their comfort zones.

Enjoyed the honesty that the Island and its stewardship is in a Transition r i g h t n o w w h i c h m a d e o u r explorations in Soul of Place very real and present - how is the place that we are on at this time also in an inquiry about its own soul and stewardship?

The fact that it is a remote place makes it kind of "out of the world". The landscape is incredible and the place very unique which helps getting into a very positive set of mind.

The island itself is a wonderful environment, and has a distinct ambient energy field that supports both mental and physical activity

The space truly contributed to different thinking...by taking us out of our normal routines, it is 'freeing' and that shows up in not only new ideas, but a willingness to be open to new approaches

13

The unique thing of making a journey away from a typical urban environment made the gathering special before even arriving. The island took people out of their

routines, fostered creativity and openness to new approaches.

Participant comments about the built environment What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience? (N = 59)

The various spaces/meeting spo ts a l l owed fo r l o ts o f interaction and exchange. Being outdoors and close to nature helped create a strong sense of collaboration and cohesion among the group.

The meditation room is very useful as a setting for breaking down traditional boundaries, and instills humility into the process.

Great meeting space enhanced by the cushions being in a circle.

A great relaxing, creative environment.

Setting, facilities and mood of the place all allow for individual preferences - to ba lance t ime in g roup activities and making Wasan an opportunity for quiet reflection.

The spaces provide worked well for a variety of different meeting needs.

The time spent at Wasan came at a critical point in this project and the length of time together allowed new thinking to significantly influence next steps. The setting and design naturally fosters a desire to listen and reflect, two things necessary to advance complex inquiries. The staff were a complete joy.

The place and space created was incredible. It was striking that after so many years of sport meetings- this was the first time the space was truly aligned with the broader notion of health and sport. (…) I knew about half of the people in the meeting prior, and I can honestly say that these relationships and many of my new ones were deepened to much greater levels as a result of the place and space on the island. A very special place for good work to occur- and I hope it can continue. Anything I can do to support this- please just ask- Many thanks to the entire team!

It's great that you have quiet spaces like the meditation area. Sometimes one needs to retreat from a retreat... :)

I enjoyed the island very much- there were places to go for quiet and places to meet and share with others.

It was a beautiful island and retreat! The accommodations were very clean

14

The built environment suited well for different meeting needs and individual working preferences (meetings in small/large groups, individual reflection).

Accomodations were very clean.

Participant comments about relationship building What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience? (N = 59)

It was truly an effective way to build stronger relationships with people in our community as well as collaborate with them to finish with real, tangible outcomes for Connected in Motion, that will help to support their charitable mission.

The activities available on the island helped to foster a sense of community very quickly, making the rest of the work we wanted to accomplish much easier and collaborative.

Great location, good venue for fos te r ing d ia logue . Love the opportunities for non-traditional team building.

Wasan is conducive to group work. It allows for the right mix of big group discussions and small breakout sessions. The ability to move between spaces staves off boredom and keeps the work heading in a productive direction.

The depth of social bonding was extraordinary. The synergies that emerged were profound - in large part due to who was invited to spend the time together and the type of facilitation that occurred...but also because the space opened our hearts with the beauty and vibration of it.

the amazing people and opportunity for exchange

being outdoors and in such a beautiful setting is part of what builds the relationships

As a fast paced, and evolving organization, often too little time is allocated to think big about the work we're doing, and to do so in conversation with our peers. This process of reflection, communication, and collaboration brought our diverse team (geographically, experientially etc.) much closer together, and oriented us toward a common practice, or way of doing things - if not a common set of goals.

Wasan is a rare safe space for both people and ideas. The place, atmosphere and gentle, unobtrusive, but warm, hospitality made it possible to walk into a working meeting with 25 strangers and walk out of a retreat with 25 new sources of inspiration and collaboration.

- a great collection of people

- a high degree of collaborative spirit

Simply inspiring and very supportive to relationship building.

The opportunity to meet others working in XX and to have time to make deeper connections and discuss ideas was very valuable to me.

I also found the group to be very inviting and cohesive. There didn't seem to be anyone who dominated too much.

We did get a lot more clarity as a group that what we entered with. We did develop a sense of working on a greater vision together.

15

The Wasan Island was highly supportive to relationship building, especially the depth of social bonding was extraordinary.

Participant comments: Mixed What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience? (N = 59)

It goes without saying that Wasan Island is a very special place. The setting, the facilities and the terrific food all provided an excellent environment for digging down into difficult issues. I only wished we had stayed longer as it felt like we could have spent another day doing genuinely deep analysis. It was glorious having access to boats, docks, a sauna and hot tub!

It was wonderful! Thank you so much for hosing us. I loved the food and communal atmosphere, the casual tone set by the Zen room and the encouragement to take advantage of the Island's amenities.

I loved the setting, the company and the activities. It was a perfect mix of people and activities to generate ideas, be creative and avoid burning out. Made n e w f r i e n d s , c r e a t e d memories, and had some interesting thoughts.

It was breathtaking, incredible, amazing. Every single detail was purposefully thought through. Everything had an incredible "wow" effect: the place, the spaces (indoors and outdoors), the facilities, the activities, the food, the people participating and hosting us... (no order of importance, since everything contributed to the magic of the event). It was the best "conference" I ever attended (and I have attended a lot)! It was like getting back together with old friends, when we actually did not know each other at the beginning. Thank you! And I hope to be able to get back to Wasan Island soon

It was very positive - the sense of camaraderie and community that grew out of the environment, participants and staff was unique. The leadership/facilitators provided a nice balance between structure and free flow. A very special place run by very thoughtful engaging people!

Great place to allow for strategic thinking! .

Wonderful hosts, excellent food, and relaxing atmosphere for building camaraderie.

Amazing staff, food, ambiance, and esprit! It will be an essential chapter in the development of our work.

The space was very thought provoking and being isolated really allowed us to focus on what the goal of the three days was. What an amazing opportunity to meet new people and make a difference.

I learned the value of a true retreat. The way a group functions in such a setting, with such a format is very different than in other meeting spaces. I personally felt the value of the retreat as my desire to create art was very strong. Of course the S4D meetings kept me busy so made this difficult!

Participant comments: Mixed What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience? (N = 59)

This was a huge mental workout! I found it to be an exceptional retreat: there was so much challenge in what we were discussing, but the island and the staff made it so much easier to contemplate and then re-charge before the next day. This was an experience that will stay with me all of my life.

This was the best week of my summer, even though it was "work"

I've been to a number of retreats in the past and Wasan was simply different in all the right ways. The staff, the space, and the vibe all contributed to helping our team remove themselves from the busy day-to-day and to gain a greater sense of clarity about our work.

Memorable for its relevant agenda, its exchange with remarkable people, and its setting - including the very pleasant shared (delicious) meals and strolls in a land/waterscape of strongly serene cultural associations

Inspiring for the assemblage of experience, the shared and open questioning of present and future and a sense of common values and interest for a better collective space to support society in its own progress.

The Wasan experience was a generator of more community building, creativity and coming back to what is essential. I t w a s a t r a n s f o r m a t i v e experience, allowing the right amount of deep rest and bubbly stimulation to sprout new ideas.

Couldn't have been better. I learned about a. my organization and it's commitment to the community. b. my organization helping and trying to understand both ends and guiding us to meet our goal as one. c. it was a new and learning experience for me.

Though most of the time was spent engaged in the matter at hand, the leisure time was of enormous value offering the perfect context for further, more intimate, conversation and simply solidifying new friendships. Without the distraction of our everyday lives, there was more occasion for the day's work to settle comfortably in our minds (whilst swimming in the lake or soaking in a hot tub!).

A good mix of the intensity of w o r k a n d relaxation and enjoyment

A great way to engage in a longer conversation, allowing for reflection along the way. Supports collaboration in thinking and analysis without needing commitment to implementation as a group

Uniqueness What one element of the Wasan experience was unique among your previous retreat experiences? (N = 58)

Island being removed from all other distractions / rather a pilgrimage than just a trip / its spirit and energy / the fact that it required a physical journey to get there, set it apart from daily activities immediately / being forced to distance yourself from routine activities and responsibilities is liberating/ sense of history at the island / loved the experience of being on this small island that you could swim around in less than a half hour / even the boat ride over contributed as there was both a sense of excitement and feeling regular stress melt away / no option of leaving or doing something else kept everyone focused on the task at hand and on each other / nevertheless without cutting us from necessary contact via email / far enough from any major cities that during break time, people remain mostly together / A place that focused on being together rather than being in bars or meeting rooms / georgeous

Staff welcoming / well organized / friendly / caring / tremendous hospitality / incredible / supportive / pride on their place / dedication of the staff to forwarding the conversation through the experience is something I had not experienced prior to Wasan / loved how the team treated us as family

Time to connect, reflect and relax not heavily scheduled / possibility to relax while working / not felt like working / balance of unstructured versus structured activities / variety of options for breakout sessions or solitary thinking

Meals relaxed / delicious / love baked into every morsel of food / retreats rarely privilege dining together in such an intimate and special way / not used for extra lectures but were to connect with others / exceptional

General accomodation no desks and chairs, but an atmosphere that encourages creativity / arrangement of the physical space made it possible to interact almost constantly without ever feeling overwhelmed, despite the lack of privacy / infrastructure that is very well calibrated to reflection and creative work / lots of space / allowed us to more easily break up into groups and accomplish our concrete goals and objectives for the retreat / access to all manner of things (music, food, swimming, spaces, views, walks etc) that I could use to keep my own internal vibrancy at a high level - at all times

Certain Rooms the arrangement of the conference center helped to level the playing field / pavilion meeting space in which everyone is on the ground and the light creates an intimacy that is unique / conference room / casual tone set by the Zen room encouraged everyone to relax and participate in the process removing any formal tone / mediation room

Group group size / sense of family / gathering in a neutral location, in a casual comfortable location where everyone is at the same level (no pay cheque distinction) made everyone an equal contributor / degree to which we developed strong personal and professional bonds

Simplicity the island reminds us of what is important through the pristine views, the soft sighing of the trees and the rich, fecund smell of the earth / an attention to what is truly essential in all the details, from food, to architecture, to the island itself and the spirit of the team.

Others first retreat experience / No unique elements / for free / hands-on working sessions - so much better than just talking

Focus §  Allowed me to relax and focus on contributing ideas and listening to others §  helped us to get out of our own element and appreciate the importance of

place and space. §  means that everyone has to be a bit more present. §  I found that the 'stress free' environment allowed for a greater focus on the

questions at hand §  It helped us take a step back from the 'daily grind' and dig deeper into some

organizational elements. §  It helped me focus better on the conversations, taking my mind away from

the personal conflicts that had been distracting my attention and drawing my energy.

§  very relaxing which allowed me to be fully present. §  just allowing to put oneself fully and wholly into a context. To be focused and

not have the distractions of the job, family, city, etc... §  Extremely productive as you were away from everything else. §  we need to do all this in 40 hours and leave with it done was essential to

achieving our goal.

Inspiration •  relaxing and inspiring place to work •  It was inspiring to me to think about

the long term impacts of a place like Wasan as similar to the long term impacts of my organization's work.

•  created a very special and shared container in which to think.

•  The whole inclusive area and experience really allowed us to work in an inspiring and thought provoking space

•  This spirit of place is not just related to the physical and atmospheric qualities of the island but also finds some of its roots in a humanistic ownership through a foundation. This essence made the island and its caring team, an active participant in meaning and spirit to the discussions from my own view in a way which could not be achieve through a commercial, governmental or private venue.

Team building •  helped unify the group. •  we came out as a much stronger team and even weeks later still

•  It helped me bond with some of the other participants •  It keeps people together and allow building friendly and personal

relations which then help in the productivity of the group... as everyone knows each other a bit better.

•  Because it was small, you had to interact with people at all times. This made for a very productive 4 days.

•  In a way the closeness created and required by the island helped the group cohere quickly without ever breaking into smaller cliques. I felt like I truly engaged with everyone in a meaningful way multiple times.

•  something about the environment, the place helped a group of strangers bond much closer than I have ever seen before

Reflection and relaxation •  I had time by myself on "my deck" to reflect and relax •  encouraged peace and reflection •  relaxed atmosphere was very helpful in making me feel comfortable in a situation where I was

surrounded by mostly strangers.

The visibility of the staff is very important, as their "stage management" (not by directing, but simply by arranging/preparing spaces) provides a sub-conscious background allowing the actors to really focus on their activities.

The outdoor and indoor space a l l owed fo r l a rge group meetings as well as quieter spaces for completing work with smaller groups as well.

In such a relaxed setting, barefoot, sitting in a circle on cushions, or on a dock with a bathing suit and towel, you feel comfortable and focused. And being able to talk to leaders in the space on a casual, unstructured basis was golden.

Permanent access to music, food, space, walks: It was central - it was this ongoing invitation to be there in my own fu l l potential, to contribute and to be in relationship with others.

Mediation room: creating new ways of relating amongst often corporatized groups

Pavillon meeting space: It creates a safe space for "truth-telling" and pushing people out of their comfort zone.

Being able to also "play together" strengthened the interpersonal relationships as well which contributes to a sense of trust and openness in the group around issues that can sometimes be quite contentious.

1. Swimming -  Swimming and taking breaks in the sauna were

tremendously restorative! -  Swimming every morning and then having a discussion with

a peer in the hot tub was a precious opportunity. -  helped me learn. -  Morning swims contributed to a re-energizing and almost

'cleansing'. Got to appreciate the beauty of the area. -  became an important ritual for me. Invigorating and

rejuvenating it was a lovely pause in an otherwise mentally rigorous day. But the result was, it helped settle the brain allowing for the many ideas discussed that day to become less scattered.

-  helped clear the mind and ready oneself for the day's work.

It was when XY said, he was going swimming at 7:30 AM in what seemed like unbearable cold. I couldn't resist

following him, and it produced a fantastic feeling of freedom. I loved bobbing in the waves as I

swam and letting go of control, so that I began swimming in rhythm with the waves. That is often true of learning too, that you have to go with the flow; often you don't understand at first, but you continue reading, continue listening, and over

time you absorb the knowledge and it becomes natural to you.

32

Swimming helped participants to restorate, clear their mind and getting ready for the day´s work.

2. Sitting at the docks -  Where better a place to reflect? -  It was wonderful to be able to quietly retreat to the dock and reflect on how the work

we are doing really is making a difference. (…) It is essential you can slow down, without constant interruption and noise to really internalize this.

-  Doing some creative thinking on the dock, in the sunshine. -  Every morning I would rise early and sit on a quiet dock for an hour or two. I drew

what was important to me from the day before, and as I drew I kept glancing at the changing sky and the still waters. Nature calmed me, and allowed me to focus on the important work ahead.

-  The opportunity to do break out groups on a deck or dock allowed for non-constrained thinking

-  Conducting breakout groups on docks/balconies, was not distracting... rather it enhanced the process.

33

Sitting at the docks allowed for creative thinking and reflection. Furthermore, the docks were described as excellent place for breakout groups.

3. Kayaking/paddling -  An early morning paddle to catch the sunrise on a still lake. It was a

reminder of the importance of standing still and appreciating and being fully present in the moment.

-  A lot of the value of Wasan came out not only in the conversations and activities but also in the unplanned moments. Sitting on the dock, going for a paddle, gathering around the campfire - each elements that provided further opportunities to engage with other participants in a unique manner.

-  It's amazing to be able to work out a problem with a fellow team member while kayaking in such a beautiful setting.

34

While kayaking or paddling participants felt being fully in present and being able to standing still. Also kayaking and paddling was seen as good possibility to

engage with others.

4. Campfire -  The firepit late at night allowed us to connect on a human level, which filled

a reservoir of trust that enabled us to our work more easily. -  The "hallway chats" were in nature and this allowed for us to open our

minds to all possibilities from the campfire, to gazing at stars to being in the hot tub. Conversation was occurring everywhere.

-  Nature enabled learning from others - especially sitting around the camp fire.

5. Hot tub/sauna -  Waking up in the morning to watch the sun rise, then going to swim in the

lake and then enjoy the sauna and the hot tub allowed me to reflect, to think back at what I learnt and what I wanted to learn from the people who were on the island with me. It allowed me to feel reinforced, reinvigorated, to feel calm and serenity, with the will to fully focus on the time to be spent on the island (and not be distracted with the outside world).

-  Swimming every morning and then having a discussion with a peer in the hot tub was a precious opportunity.

35

The campfire as well as the hot tub/sauna were perfect places for conversation and learning from others.

Wasan Island as an outstanding overall -  Not a single moment, but the relatively small scale of the island, coupled with the design of

the facilities and events, created a very powerful sense of common enterprise. All of these spaces opened up many kinds of conversations, connections and whole person interactions that were much deeper and wider in their scope that they would have been in a closed setting.

-  Everything at Wasan helped the flow into transitioning from enjoying nature while working. The setting at Wasan eased the mindset about being at "work" while taking time to relax.

-  Being able to take a break and swim, walk on the trails and be in the sun were all moments that I reflect on fondly.

-  I think the very intentional design and rules of the retreat center itself aided the experience. It was a very calming minimalist space without unnecessary furniture, devices, coffee cups, noise, distraction etc.

-  Swimming around the island, listening to the wind and rain at night, enjoying communal meals, breaking hot-tub records – all were part of the learning experience insofar as they helped generate a kind of atmosphere conducive to reflection. Otherwise it's a bit difficult to isolate a particular experience.

Participant comments What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience? (N = 59)

It goes without saying that Wasan Island is a very special place. The setting, the facilities and the terrific food all provided an excellent environment for digging down into difficult issues. I only wished we had stayed longer as it felt like we could have spent another day doing genuinely deep analysis. The only comment I have about the physical setting is that a little soundproofing between the shared bathrooms and the bedrooms in the main lodge might be nice - just for enhanced privacy. It was glorious having access to boats, docks, a sauna and hot tub! And Volker, Alyssa and all of the staff members (I include Eva in this) made it a very welcoming experience.

It was wonderful! Thank you so much for hosing us. I loved the food and communal atmosphere, the casual tone set by the Zen room and the encouragement to take advantage of the Island's amenities.

1. The Wasan staff was amazing - so friendly and genuine. 2. The purpose of the island is so important and the environment is so conducive to productive conversation. It really is a remarkable place. 3. My only criticism is that it is so selective. I know there are very good reasons for the selectivity, but I'm wondering if there is a way to offer a program that is open to a more diverse group of people.

I loved the setting, the company and the activities. It was a perfect mix of people and activities to generate ideas, be creative and avoid burning out. Made n e w f r i e n d s , c r e a t e d memories, and had some interesting thoughts. The island itself is indeed magical, and the staff was absolutely amazing. I've never been this spoiled!

It was such a good experience. Getting to stay on the island where everything was taken care of allowed us to focus our energy on the event and not on distractions. I'm so grateful to have had the chance. I think we got good work done, but also better understood the other charities we were working with.

Participant comments What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience?

It was truly an effective way to build stronger relationships with people in our community as well as collaborate with them to finish with r e a l , t a n g i b l e o u t c o m e s f o r Connected in Motion, that will help to support their charitable mission.

Excellent staff. I was not expecting to receive such incredible service while on the island. Evan in particular really made sure that our stay was comfortable and enjoyable. The great staff made it easy for us to focus on our work. The facilities themselves were also in great shape.

Wasan is an excellent setting for creative team work. It's a place to execute big ideas and undertake projects that on land seem more daunting. The staff, the setting, the accommodations, and the overall atmosphere make this possible. Wasan is conducive to group

work. It allows for the right mix of big group discussions and small breakout sessions. The abi l i ty to move between spaces staves off boredom and keeps the work heading in a productive direction. We were all so well taken care of by the staff that it meant that we could really focus on the work at hand.

The staff and everyone involved with the Wasan Island venue were wonderful and more than accommodating. The activities available on the island helped to foster a sense of community very quickly, making the rest of the work we wanted to accomplish much easier and collaborative.

Great location, good venue for fostering dialogue. Would suggest boosting the Wifi capabilities (investing in a few wifi hubs) for those groups who are working in the digital space. Love the opportunities for non-traditional team building.

Participant comments What 2-3 things would you like to tell us about your Wasan Island experience? (N = 59)

The meditation room is very useful as a setting for breaking down traditional boundaries, and instills humility into the process.

A wonderful setting for out of the box thinking, making connections, and letting go of the outside world. None of this would have been as effective in a hotel or conference center, not even close.

1) the amazing people and opportunity for exchange 2) the extraordinary environment which allowed for a very effective exchange.

The depth o f soc ia l bond ing was extraordinary. The synergies that emerged were profound - in large part due to who was invited to spend the time together and the type of facilitation that occurred...but also because the space opened our hearts with the beauty and vibration of it. The freedom offered by our hosts to access spaces, activities, views, experiences that could keep our energy high was very effective in helping us to each keep our own being at high vibrancy.

Wasan's delicious food made it easy to focus on the task at hand - the staff took care of details that allowed me to focus my mental energy. I w a s i m p r e s s e d b y t h e peacefulness on the island - we felt removed from unnecessary distractions.

The various spaces/meeting spo ts a l l owed fo r l o ts o f interaction and exchange. The hosts were extremely welcoming and hospitable. Being outdoors and close to nature helped create a strong sense of collaboration and cohesion among the group.

The obvious (which is still worth stating) the surroundings; the wonderful accomodations (although it was hard to share a room at my age); and the food. We did get a lot more clarity as a group that what we entered with. We did develop a sense of working on a greater vision together.

The food and the staff was amazing. The space was very thought provoking and being isolated really allowed us to focus on what the goal of the three days was. What an amazing opportunity to meet new people and make a difference.

Sharing rooms is really difficult. In order to fully engage and con t r ibu te productively, you need to be able to retreat to a quiet place. The food is fantastic. We would really appreciate having more healthy snacks between meals (e.g. fruit).

Hav ing a t tended many re t reats , conferences and group events of various kinds I was struck by the exceptionally warm and congenial qualities of the location and hosts - crucial ingredients for endeavors of this kind.

This was a huge mental workout! I found it to be an exceptional retreat: there was so much challenge in what we were discussing, but the island and the staff made it so much easier to contemplate and then re-charge before the next day. This was an experience that will stay with me all of my life.

I was really impressed by the intentionality that the team put in everything that they did. The anticipation of needs and the c o n s t a n t e x c e e d i n g o f expectations.

Great meet ing space enhanced by the cushions being in a circle.

The food was wonderful.

A great relaxing, creative environment.

1. Setting - host and staff were professional and welcoming. Helped to ease the discomfort for someone like me who is an introvert. 2. Organized - everything was well planned from meals to accommodation, set-up of meeting rooms and relaxing areas. 3. Retreat - I learned about a. my organization and it's commitment to the community. b. my organization helping and trying to understand both ends and guiding us to meet our goal as one. c. it was a new and learning experience for me.

Wonderful hospitality of host team - set the tone upon arrival and continued until departure. Setting, facilities and mood of the place all allow for individual preferences - to ba lance t ime in g roup activities and making Wasan an opportunity for quiet reflection.

A few key things stand out about our time on Wasan Island. First, as a fast paced, and evolving organization, often too little time is allocated to think big about the work we're doing, and to do so in conversation with our peers. This process of reflection, communication, and collaboration brought our diverse team (geographically, experientially etc.) much closer together, and oriented us toward a common practice, or way of doing things - if not a common set of goals. Second, the experience of being on Wasan, and having our time so brilliantly curated by Volker and his team, demonstrated a way of collaboration, caring, and focus on quality that I believe we should strive for as an organization - a style we could only characterize as "Subtle Awesomeness". I've been to a number of retreats in the past and Wasan was simply different in all the right ways. The staff, the space, and the vibe all contributed to helping our team remove themselves from the busy day-to-day and to gain a greater sense of clarity about our work.

Wonderful hosts, excellent food, and relaxing atmosphere for building camaraderie

- the staff are a key part of the amazingness

- being outdoors and in such a beautiful setting is part of what builds the relationships

- this was the best week of my summer, even though it was "work"

The unique place helped facilitate the creation of a safe space for sharing.

The specialness of making a journey away from typical urban environments made the gathering special before even arriving on the island.

The hosts of the island being so enthusiastic about Wasan created a great feeling.

The island itself with its great facilities and beauty.

It was very positive - the sense of camaraderie and community that grew out of the environment, participants and staff was unique. The leadership/facilitators provided a nice balance between structure and free flow. A very special place run by very thoughtful engaging people!

Amazing staff, food, ambiance, and esprit! It will be an essential chapter in the development of our work.

The hospitality of the staff was top-notch and really enhanced the sense of being comfortable and welcome. The spaces provide worked well for a variety of different meeting needs.

The opportunity to participate in some deep thinking and dialogue was strengthened tremendously by the conditions of the island and those who operate it - serene, beautiful, and rejuvenating environment matched by warm, generous and friendly people.

Starting with the intentional hospitality of Volker, Alyssa and the entire team- every single detail was seen to with such care that you were enveloped in a very special space within the first 15 minutes of arrival and this continued throughout the entire time on the island. I knew about half of the people in the meeting prior, and I can honestly say that these relationships and many of my new ones were deepened to much greater levels as a result of the place and space on the island. A very special place for good work to occur- and I hope it can continue. Anything I can do to support this- please just ask- Many thanks to the entire team!

Great place to allow for strategic thinking! The team is wonderful - great food and always attentive.

The space - nature and the built environment - enhance the goals of having a retreat, taking people out of their routines and their comfort zones.

The Wasan team creates an appropriate ambiance: one of inclusion, creativity, and peace.

Wasan is a rare safe space for both people and ideas. The place, atmosphere and gentle, unobtrusive, but warm, hospitality made it possible to walk into a working meeting with 25 strangers and walk out of a retreat with 25 new sources of inspiration and collaboration.

W o n d e r f u l l y g r a c i o u s , accommodating, welcoming and talented staff. Food was superior. S i t e l e n t i t s e l f t o g r e a t conversations and work-related tasks. Couldn't have better.

Wonderful environment conducive to relaxed critical thinking and re f l ec t i on . a ve ry special place. A little magical.

The Wasan experience was a generator of more community building, creativity and coming back to what is essential. It was a transformative experience, allowing the right amount of deep rest and bubbly stimulation to sprout new ideas.

- a great collection of people

- a high degree of collaborative spirit

- a wonderful locale

The staff at Wasan make the place incredibly special - everyone's warmth, sense of humour, deep intelligence, and generosity of spirit is wonderful. It's great that you have quiet spaces like the meditation area. Sometimes one needs to retreat from a retreat... :) The food is fabulous - I felt really good about eating at Wasan because their were wonderfully prepared healthy options.

Beautifully hosted space, beautifully hosted meals - there is a real mastery and artistry in this which impacts the whole experience deeply. Such a feeling of care, and pride and hospitality. Enjoyed the honesty that the Island and its stewardship is in a Transition right now which made our explorations in Soul of Place very real and present - how is the place that we are on at this time also in an inquiry about its own soul and stewardship?

The fact that it is a remote place makes it kind of "out of the world". The landscape is incredible and the place very unique which helps getting into a very positive set of mind. The bad internet connection is an other good thing also... as it avoids having people spend the collective time looking at their emails and surfing the web... so keep the wifi connection but keep it a bit slow as the island invites to a slowing down posture... and disconnection from the real busy world...

The staff is simply amazing, and our stay at Wasan was greatly enhanced by their care, attention to everyone's well-being, and team work. The island itself is a wonderful environment, and has a distinct ambient energy field that supports both mental and physical activity. (You might want to consider introducing a grove of birch trees by the Pavilion. The varieties/species of plants and fauna on the island deserve more study if you have not already done so.)

1. A great way to engage in a longer conversation, allowing for reflection along the way 2. Supports collaboration in thinking and analysis without needing commitment to implementation as a group 3. A good mix of the intensity of work and relaxation and enjoyment

The space truly contributed to different thinking...by taking us out of our normal routines, it is 'freeing' and that shows up in not only new ideas, but a willingness to be open to new approaches

Okay, the food was fantastic...just had to say.

The team assembled a group of great thinkers...although, it may have been good to have a bit more 'creative tension' within the group to surface new ideas.

Simply inspiring and very supportive to relationship building. The staff was incredible, the food phenomenal and the spirit of love and care made being there very special and meaningful. Thank you!

I learned the value of a true retreat. The way a group functions in such a setting, with such a format is very different than in other meeting spaces. I personally felt the value of the retreat as my desire to create art was very strong. Of course the S4D meetings kept me busy so made this difficult! The opportunity to meet others working in S4D and to have time to make deeper connections and discuss ideas was very valuable to me. The team at Wasan were wonderful - and created amazing food!

The team was very welcoming and supportive of everything we were doing. I enjoyed the island very much- there were places to go for quiet and places to meet and share with others. The food was very good too.

It was a beautiful island and retreat! The hosts of the island were very welcoming. The accommodations were very clean. I also found the group to be very inviting and cohesive. There didn't seem to be anyone who dominated too much.

Uniqueness (N = 58) What one element of the Wasan experience was unique among your previous retreat experiences?

•  The natural setting was extraordinary. •  The casual tone set by the Zen room. I believe this encouraged everyone to relax and participate in the process removing any formal tone. •  This was my first actual retreat, but I've been to working sessions, that had similar goals. •  Never really went on a retreat so there are no comparisons, but the friendly, caring atmosphere was truly unique. •  This was my first retreat experience •  The surroundings and the people. No sterile hotels. Love baked into every morsel of food. A place that focused on being together rather

than being in bars or our meeting rooms. •  This was a true, hands on working session. The charity left with new digital assets ready to go. They feel empowered going forward. So

much better than just "talking" -- we worked and accomplished! •  I have never been to a more beautiful cottage with such welcoming staff. It was also very well organized and there was a lot of space

available to work on projects. •  This was my first major retreat. The bar has been set quite high. •  The incredible staff and partners on the island made this experience particularly memorable. •  The tremendous hospitality •  The venue allowed for a lot more space than previous retreats I had been on, allowing us to more easily break up into groups and

accomplish our concrete goals and objectives for the retreat. •  The conference room •  The size of the group •  The meditation room •  "Well, I have to say, the fact that it was all paid for was pretty darn nice, especially for someone like me who often attends such events at my

own expense. •  But aside from that, the whole place made you just want to reach out to all the like minded people and share experiences, learnings. Very

cool." •  This was a small gorgeous island! •  The access to all manner of things (music, food, swimming, spaces, views, walks etc) that I could use to keep my own internal vibrancy at a

high level- at all times. •  The mealtimes were not used for extra lectures, etc, but were to connect with other participants over great food. •  Being on an island and being able to walk and swim around the whole island.

Uniqueness (N = 58) What one element of the Wasan experience was unique among your previous retreat experiences?

•  the surroundings •  The isolation and the reason why the island is there in the first place. •  It was on an island! •  The effort involved in getting to such an isolated location made it something like a pilgrimage rather than just a 'trip'. •  Being removed from all other distractions makes the Wasan Island experience truly unique. There is a certain reverence that the Island

provides as well: it reminds us of what it important through the pristine views, the soft sighing of the trees and the rich, fecund smell of the earth.

•  The uniqueness of the Island itself - how Wasan was more than just a venue - the spirit and energy of the island and its own culture were an integral part of the retreat experiences.

•  Balance of unstructured versus structured activities/sessions - we had time to reflect and ponder without being heavily scheduled. •  No comments. This was my first experience. •  The space and staff on Wasan played a big role in helping set a tone for our team to move beyond the typical retreat experience. This was

further supported by having sufficient time allocated to bond with peers and "Wasanees" as well as to quietly reflect. •  Location was fantastic and unparalleled. Food was exceptional. Hospitality was above and beyond •  - the setting makes people relax and connect •  The 'hosting' element. How Wasan has a 'subtle awesomeness' about how it hosts and navigates the experience for all participants. •  The isolated nature of the island and the fact that it required a physical journey to get there set it apart from daily activities immediately. •  The staff... •  The rapport, accomodation and support of the staff- their pride in their place and in the way they represented their pride. •  Meals - rarely do retreats privilege dining together in such an intimate and special way. The value put on a communal experience of eating

well, relaxing over a coffee or wine, talking, lingering, enjoying the view was unique compared to other retreats. •  A chance to relax in a hot tub and sauna and continue the vibrant conversations of the more formal discussions. •  The isolation. Being forced to distance yourself from routine activities and responsibilities is very liberating and valuable when needing to

focus. •  The dedication of the staff to forwarding the conversation through the experience is something I had not experienced prior to Wasan. •  The hosting and hospitality that Volker, Alyssa and the team exuded throughout the entire visit- right to the final departure and boat ride

back to the main dock

•  The meeting location - no desks/chairs but an atmosphere that encourages creativity •  The resonance between the topography of the island and that of the group - compact yet multiple, closed yet open, simple yet profound... •  I loved the experience of being on this small island that you could swim around in less than a half hour. As a lifelong swimmer, that

experience connected me to the place more than anything else. •  The staff was a critical part of making the retreat a success, together with an infrastructure that is very well calibrated to reflection and

creative work. •  The retreat was based on a motivation to engage by those present rather than a set of requirements based on work affiliation of economic

arrangement - very positive basis on which to engage •  I have never been to a retreat on an island. Even the boat ride over contributed as there was both a sense of excitement and feeling regular

stress melt away. •  being on an island •  This was my first true retreat and it was an awakening to the value of a retreat. Taking everyone out of their natural setting, gathering in a

neutral location, in a casual comfortable location where everyone is at the same level (no pay cheque distinction) made everyone an equal contributor. Being on an island with no option of leaving or doing something else kept everyone focused on the task at hand and on each other. The arrangement of the conference center helped to level the playing field.

•  The variety of options for breakout sessions or solitary thinking. I loved how the team treated us as family- meals were relaxed. •  The Island was unique. I loved the experience. •  The pavilion meeting space in which everyone is on the ground and the light creates an intimacy that is unique. •  The arrangement of the physical space made it possible to interact almost constantly without ever feeling overwhelmed, despite the lack of

privacy. The delicious meals and rhythm of the day also helped the entire experience never feel like "work." •  The isolation of the setting (without cutting us off from necessary contact via email) and the ability to relax while working. •  the sense of family •  A certain very precious Simplicity. An attention to what is truly essential in all the details, from food, to architecture, to the island itself and

the spirit of the team. •  the degree to which we developed strong personal/professional bonds •  The sense of history at the island was quite special - I felt like I was part of something very long term and considered. •  The scenery/landscape was incredible AND the fact that it is an island ! In a way, you can't escape and it is far enough from any major cities

that during break time, people remain mostly together...

Uniqueness (N = 57)

To what extent did this unique element help you in your role to be a productive group member or achieve your goal(s)?

Island •  encouraged peace and reflection •  relaxed atmosphere was very helpful in making me feel comfortable in a situation where I was surrounded by mostly strangers. •  we need to do all this in 40 hours and leave with it done was essential to achieving our goal. •  relaxing and inspiring place to work •  Because it was small, you had to interact with people at all times. This made for a very productive 4 days. •  helped unify the group. •  I had time by myself on "my deck" to reflect and relax •  Extremely productive as you were away from everything else. The whole inclusive area and experience really allowed us to work in an

inspiring and thought provoking space •  means that everyone has to be a bit more present. •  helped us to get out of our own element and appreciate the importance of place and space. •  Allowed me to relax and focus on contributing ideas and listening to others •  we came out as a much stronger team and even weeks later still often refer to conversations at wasan when we are problem solving •  It helped us take a step back from the 'daily grind' and dig deeper into some organizational elements. •  just allowing to put oneself fully and wholly into a context. To be focused and not have the distractions of the job, family, city, etc... •  This spirit of place is not just related to the physical and atmospheric qualities of the island but also finds some of its roots in a humanistic

ownership through a foundation. This essence made the island and its caring team, an active participant in meaning and spirit to the discussions from my own view in a way which could not be achieve through a commercial, governmental or private venue.

•  It helped me bond with some of the other participants and focus better on the conversations, taking my mind away from the personal conflicts that had been distracting my attention and drawing my energy.

•  I found that the 'stress free' environment allowed for a greater focus on the questions at hand •  created a very special and shared container in which to think. •  very relaxing which allowed me to be fully present. •  In a way the closeness created and required by the island helped the group cohere quickly without ever breaking into smaller cliques. I felt

like I truly engaged with everyone in a meaningful way multiple times. •  Kept us focused as a group (made up of people new to each other) and allowed us to plow through the messiness without rancor. •  something about the environment, the place helped a group of strangers bond much closer than I have ever seen before •  It was inspiring to me to think about the long term impacts of a place like Wasan as similar to the long term impacts of my organization's

work. •  It keeps people together and allow building friendly and personal relations which then help in the productivity of the group... as everyone

knows each other a bit better.

Staff •  Allowed me as a facilitator to relax, knowing that the participants needs were being taken care of. It meant that I could focus on moving the

work forward. •  Made it a very comfortable place for dialogue. •  I always felt welcomed and supported - the staff/facilitators and the environment blended well to allow the activities to flow naturally. It

reflected the inter-sectoral connections that we saw as an important element of developing an inclusive platform for impact. •  The fully supportive team on Wasan and their many talents encouraged additional connections made and relationships advanced over food,

music, fireplaces, etc. Generating this warm, communal, reflective setting helped me to be more open to new realms of thinking. •  I can honestly say that the level of discussion and relationship was far deeper than many other meetings I have attended lately •  The visibility of the staff is very important, as their "stage management" (not by directing, but simply by arranging/preparing spaces)

provides a sub-conscious background allowing the actors to really focus on their activities. Group •  I felt extremely connected to our group and to the place which allowed me to also be very grounded in myself, my reflections and my

sharing. •  better deeper interactions with people •  Although my experience in S4D is less than many there, I felt that my thoughts and opinions were valued and worth being heard. Time to relax, reflect and connect •  Being able to also "play together" strengthened the interpersonal relationships as well which contributes to a sense of trust and openness in

the group around issues that can sometimes be quite contentious. •  Built strong relationships with other participants, which helped us collaborate later on. •  This is a very important element for allowing creativity to emerge •  allowed for a different, more productive, reflective, and perhaps creative experience in a broad and very positive sense. •  help to facilitate having an in depth conversation with nearly all the attendees. •  Sometimes we need time to get away from the crowd- the possibility of down time was welcome Rooms •  Mediation room: creating new ways of relating amongst often corporatized groups •  Pavillon meeting space: It creates a safe space for "truth-telling" and pushing people out of their comfort zone. Meals •  Balanced out the work sessions and allowed for natural networking - never underestimate the power of breaking bread together!

Accomodation •  The outdoor and indoor space allowed for large group meetings as well as quieter spaces for completing work with smaller groups as well. •  we were able to implement concrete process changes for the nonprofit we were helping. Our planning happened before the retreat, and so

we aimed to get all of the actual work done while on Wasan. •  In such a relaxed setting, barefoot, sitting in a circle on cushions, or on a dock with a bathing suit and towel, you feel comfortable and

focused. And being able to talk to leaders in the space on a casual, unstructured basis was golden. •  It was central - it was this ongoing invitation to be there in my own full potential to contribute and to be in relationship with others. Simplicity •  It kept me grounded in the importance of making our work meaningful. •  To be closer to what is really true and authentic. Not faking or forcing any pre-planned goal.

Role of nature/built places: Overview Can you describe a moment when nature, or the built spaces at Wasan became part of your learning here? (N = 54)

•  The setup and physical beauty of the Zen room contributed to a sense of equality within the room and facilitated thinking about how to achieve equity outside the room.

•  I think the setting encouraged the other participants to take a break from their usual life and really dive deep into the content. •  The pavillion conference room was a great space for presentations and long group discussions. I think the space itself made it easier to

concentrate and soak in information, which is often difficult to do for long periods in traditional office spaces. •  Swimming around the island, listening to the wind and rain at night, enjoying communal meals, breaking hot-tub records – all were part of

the learning experience insofar as they helped generate a kind of atmosphere conducive to reflection. Otherwise it's a bit difficult to isolate a particular experience.

•  Having the opportunity to spread out and work outside in small groups was helpful in the small-group work we were trying to achieve •  "our reflective exercise and sharing day were made possible by:The dock and water - where better a place to reflect / The gazebo - a place

to quietly share my story / The boat house - a place to be together and share" •  After a day with the CiM team, where we learned about people with Type 1 and actually did see one member trying to manage her Type 1, it

was wonderful to be able to quietly retreat to the dock and reflect on how the work we are doing really is making a difference. I work for a charity all the time -- but you can never have enough direct connection with the people directly impacted by the charitable work. And its essential you can slow down, without constant interruption and noise to really internalize this. Wassan Island made this possible.

•  The wrap-around porch by the eating area is such a great space for for casual conversations and creative thinking! That view is unbeatable. •  The boathouse provided a great space for sharing and demonstrating our progress with a small group. •  The transition from working to swimming/kayaking etc was effortless. In fact it was less a transition than a fluid movement back and forth

between work and pleasure. To be sitting on the dock building a budget one moment. a toe dipping in the water, then kayaking the next was unlike any other workshop experience I've ever had.

•  The Pavilion was an excellent gathering space to come together and recap the progress individual groups had made each day. •  The pavilion space allowed us to reconvene and share our accomplishments for the day. This ensured that individuals could be moved from

group to group based on their ability to troubleshoot certain problems or provide new insights. •  Doing some creative thinking on the dock, in the sunshine •  "The rain was pissing down and it was well after dark. Rainclouds covered the sky so there was no moonlight, and I found the path lighting

had suddenly been turned off. My phone battery was dead, everyone else was asleep, and I had to retrieve my charger from a common space, in order to get up on time for an early departure and flight. So I had no light source while groping from the residence lodge to the common room where I'd accidentally left the charger -- in pouring rain, without a coat or umbrella, across scrub, and up and down stairs, in complete darkness. No doubt there is a prosaic lesson here (about keeping better track of personal belongings), but perhaps a deeper read on it is that Wasan truly does offer a retreat from the ordinary pace and expectations of much of the rest of our lives. The place might almost have been telling me that I was leaving too soon."

•  waking up in the morning to watch the sun rise, then going to swim in the lake and then enjoy the sauna and the hot tub allowed me to reflect, to think back at what I learnt and what i wanted to learn from the people who were on the island with me. It allowed me to feel reinforced, reinvigorated, to feel calm and serenity, with the will to fully focus on the time to be spent on the island (and not be distracted with the outside world).

•  the firepit late at night allowed us to connect on a human level, which filled a reservoir of trust that enabled us to our work more easily •  I went kayaking with someone who updated me on the Social Investment Task Force at the G8. I swam with someone who talked about

capital market structures. I had scrambled eggs with some who talked about using a trust structure to invest in limited partnerships, thus getting around a regulatory obstacle. I played pool late at night with a Harvard prof, and learned he is a very good pool player! We plan to stay in touch.

•  Everywhere! The "hallway chats" were in nature and this allowed for us to open our minds to all possibilities from the campfire, to gazing at stars to being in the hot tub. Conversation was occurring everywhere.

•  Being on the upper deck with the views, the light breeze, the scent of the forest or being down on the deck with the sound of the lapping water, the site of birds, or being by the fire place at night with the stars above - all of these spaces opened up many kinds of conversations, connections and whole person interactions that were much deeper and wider in their scope that they would have been in a closed setting.

•  Nature enabled learning from others - especially sitting around the camp fire. •  See previous comment on the deck - having places to be alone were critical (especially if sharing a room) but being able to hike, even the

short distance around the island was wonderful •  Working outdoors. Relaxing after a long day by taking a canoe around the island. Playing ping pong. Sitting out on the water having great

talks with colleagues about social innovation. Talking by the camp fires. Sharing rooms with people you normally would not. Eating amazing food on the terrace

•  Every morning I would rise early and sit on a quiet dock for an hour or two. I drew what was important to me from the day before, and as I drew I kept glancing at the changing sky and the still waters. Nature calmed me, and allowed me to focus on the important work ahead.

•  An early morning paddle to catch the sunrise on a still lake. It was a reminder of the importance of standing still and appreciating and being fully present in the moment.

•  Everything at Wasan helped the flow into transitioning from enjoying nature while working. The setting at Wasan eased the mindset about being at "work" while taking time to relax.

•  Volker's explanation of the architect's design to capture the best of the natural light in the gathering space. •  I think the very intentional design and rules of the retreat centre itself aided the experience. It was a very calming minimalist space without

unnecessary furniture, devices, coffee cups, noise, distraction etc. •  Being around nature certainly contributed to a unique retreat experience but I had no profound moment that was part of my learning

•  A lot of the value of Wasan came out not only in the conversations and activities but also in the unplanned/uncurated moments. Sitting on the dock, going for a paddle, gathering around the campfire - each elements that provided further opportunities to engage with other participants in a unique manner.

•  The whole time! The meeting room was particularly wonderful for sharing. •  The moment we sat in a circle on foamies... •  The moment that I took off my shoes and entered the meeting room- the sense of reverence, peace and calm all set the mood/temperment

for the time together on all of the island. •  An early morning stroll around the island help me let all of the clutter of ideas from the previous day sift into a single, elegantly clear option

for how our team could proceed. ANd it made me a better listener for the rest of the day. •  The rejuvenation of jumping in the cold lake water helped clear the mind and ready oneself for the day's work. •  Swimming around the island each day became an important ritual for me. Invigorating and rejuvenating it was a lovely pause in an

otherwise mentally rigorous day. But the result was it helped settle the brain allowing for the many ideas discussed that day to become less scattered.

•  Rather than a stand alone moment, I found the natural and built environment of Wasan allowed for a deeper reflection on our work overall. •  Outside on the deck of the meeting hall as we had a session- the pacing, being outside and then going inside to reflect a bit more- was just

magic •  The opportunity to do break out groups on a deck or dock allowed for non-constrained thinking •  When, on the first morning, after doing a sketch or two of the boat houses, I strolled around the hidden side of the island and returned to the

communal hall for breakfast. •  It was when Stephen Huddart said he was going swimming at 7:30 am in what seemed like unbearable cold. I couldn't resist following him,

and it produced a fantastic feeling of freedom. I loved bobbing in the waves as I swam and letting go of control, so that I began swimming in rhythm with the waves. That is often true of learning too, that you have to go with the flow; often you don't understand at first, but you continue reading, continue listening, and over time you absorb the knowledge and it becomes natural to you.

•  My thing was walking around the island collecting acorns, as I find it unusual for so much oak to be growing on a small island. Looking at both the established and sprouting oak made me wonder about other species of plants and the island fauna.

•  The format of the session in the first part of the retreat - meeting in the round - removal is distance and separation barriers in the group was an learning moment on how physical space affects conversation

•  "two thoughts: morning swims contributed to a re-energizing and almost 'cleansing'. Got to appreciate the beauty of the area. Second, conducting breakout groups on docks/balconies, was not distracting...rather it enhanced the process"

•  walking and swimming helped me learn •  I come back to the conference centre and the seating. The room has beautiful light, artwork and cushions. For the most part, everyone sat

in different spots each time we returned to the room so we interacted with different people in this way. Being able to see everyone all the time made it possible to note slight changes in body language which always helps in a group discussion.

•  Being able to take a break and swim, walk on the trails and be in the sun were all moments that I reflect on fondly. I think you can't ignore the people who host us at the Island. If the people were miserable or not inviting the 'place' wouldn't matter. You have excellent staff

•  Swimming every morning and then having a discussion with a peer in the hot tub was a precious opportunity. •  Swimming and taking breaks in the sauna were tremendously restorative! •  It's amazing to be able to work out a problem with a fellow team member while kayaking in such a beautiful setting. •  every morning, waking up to the stillness helped to create a space and quietness that extended through the day •  There were many moments, but certainly the introductions' tour we made in the beginning, stopping at different spots in the island to feel

into it and introduce ourselves while feeling the soul of that specific place, was very powerful. •  not a single moment, but the relatively small scale of the island, coupled with the design of the facilities and events, created a very powerful

sense of common enterprise •  The pavilion is very well designed and I liked returning to the tatami mats every day for discussion. It was a routine of sharing and learning

that I became quite comfortable with. •  Jumping from the window of the greyboat house... it sounds silly and childish but it is interesting to see that there is no point in doing it

besides to take up the challenge but people did it collectively, everyone is dragging each other in doing it... even the ones that are scared of doing it but want to... This jumping off the window sounds very much like a kid-challenge but I think it reveals the importance of having sometimes a bit of madness in order to do disruptive and creative things...

•  The beauty and unspoiled nature of the natural environment really encouraged peace and reflection. Being able to also "play together" strengthened the interpersonal relationships as well which contributes to a sense of trust and openness in the group around issues that can sometimes be quite contentious.

•  It was very helpful. •  The relaxed atmosphere was very helpful in making me feel comfortable in a situation where I was surrounded by mostly strangers. •  To a large extent. •  This was my first retreat experience •  I felt extremely connected to our group and to the place which allowed me to also be very grounded in myself, my reflections and my

sharing. •  The fact that everyone bought into we need to do all this in 40 hours and leave with it done was essential to achieving our goal. •  The outdoor and indoor space allowed for large group meetings as well as quieter spaces for completing work with smaller groups as well. It

seems to be a lot easier to get work done efficiently when you're in the sun in such a beautiful setting! •  To a great extent! We were so well taken care of, it made for incredibly energized work sessions. •  Allowed me as a facilitator to relax, knowing that the participants needs were being taken care of. It meant that I could focus on moving the

work forward. •  By us group space, we were able to implement concrete process changes for the nonprofit we were helping. Our planning happened before

the retreat, and so we aimed to get all of the actual work done while on Wasan. •  It was a relaxing and inspiring place to work •  better deeper interactions with people •  creating new ways of relating amongst often corporatized groups •  In such a relaxed setting, barefoot, sitting in a circle on cushions, or on a dock with a bathing suit and towel, you feel comfortable and

focussed. And being able to talk to leaders in the space on a casual, unstructured basis was golden. •  Because it was small, you had to interact with people at all times. This made for a very productive 4 days. •  It was central - it was this ongoing invitation to be there in my own full potential to contribute and to be in relationship with others. •  Built strong relationships with other participants, which helped us collaborate later on. •  I think it helped unify the group. •  very much so, especially as I had time by myself on "my deck" to reflect and relax •  Extremely productive as you were away from everything else. The whole inclusive area and experience really allowed us to work in an

inspiring and thought provoking space. How amazing it was that you created and maintained this island for these kinds of activities

•  Being on an island means that everyone has to be a bit more present. •  Very much, I think. •  It kept me grounded in the importance of making our work meaningful. •  It was vital as it helped us to get out of our own element and appreciate the importance of place and space. •  This is a very important element for allowing creativity to emerge •  I am keen to learn more about what I can contribute as an employee and as an individual supporting my community. •  As outlined in the previous questions, these unique elements simply allowed for a different, more productive, reflective, and perhaps

creative experience in a broad and very positive sense. •  Allowed me to relax and focus on contributing ideas and listening to others •  we came out as a much stronger team and even weeks later still often refer to conversations at wasan when we are problem solving •  It set the tone for our overall time at Wasan. Calm, reflective, welcoming, inclusive. •  It helped us take a step back from the 'daily grind' and dig deeper into some organizational elements. •  Made it a very comfortable place for dialogue. •  I always felt welcomed and supported - the staff/facilitators and the environment blended well to allow the activities to flow naturally. It

refected the inter- sectoral connections that we saw as an important element of developing an inclusive platform for impact. •  Balanced out the work sessions and allowed for natural networking - never underestimate the power of breaking bread together! •  The length of the stay and the seclusion of the place help to facilitate having an in depth conversation with nearly all the attendees. •  Again, just allowing to put oneself fully and wholly into a context. To be focused and not have the distractions of the job, family, city, etc... •  The fully supportive team on Wasan and their many talents encouraged additional connections made and relationships advanced over food,

music, fireplaces, etc. Generating this warm, communal, reflective setting helped me to be more open to new realms of thinking. •  I think it was essential. I can honestly say that the level of discussion and relationship was far deeper than many other meetings I have

attended lately •  helped considerably. •  There are so many meeting and seminar rooms in our urban areas. Only a few provide a genius loci like that of Wasan Island. This spirit of

place is not just related to the physical and atmospheric qualities of the island but also finds some of its roots in a humanistic ownership through a foundation. This essence made the island and its caring team, an active participant in meaning and spirit to the discussions from my own view in a way which could not be achieve through a commercial, governmental or private venue.

•  It helped me bond with some of the other participants and focus better on the conversations, taking my mind away from the personal conflicts that had been distracting my attention and drawing my energy

•  The presence and working of the staff interestingly served as a kind of pacing for the time we spent as a group. The visibility of the staff is very important, as their "stage management" (not by directing, but simply by arranging/preparing spaces) provides a sub-conscious background allowing the actors to really focus on their activities.

•  It is too early to tell what results will come of the retreat in the longer term - but the session brought focus to many issues •  I found that the 'stress free' environment allowed for a greater focus on the questions at hand •  created a very special and shared container in which to think. •  Although my experience in S4D is less than many there, I felt that my thoughts and opinions were valued and worth being heard. •  Sometimes we need time to get away from the crowd- the possibility of down time was welcome. •  It was generally very relaxing which allowed me to be fully present. •  It creates a safe space for "truth-telling" and pushing people out of their comfort zone. •  In a way the closeness created and required by the island helped the group cohere quickly without ever breaking into smaller cliques. I felt

like I truly engaged with everyone in a meaningful way multiple times. •  Enormously. Kept us focused as a group (made up of people new to each other) and allowed us to plow through the messiness without

rancor. •  something about the environment, the place helped a group of strangers bond much closer than I have ever seen before •  To be closer to what is really true and authentic. Not faking or forcing any pre-planned goal. •  - very much •  It was inspiring to me to think about the long term impacts of a place like Wasan as similar to the long term impacts of my organization's

work. •  It keeps people together and allow building friendly and personal relations which then help in the productivity of the group... as everyone

knows each other a bit better.

•  "Ear plugs ;-) But I think that is a comment particular to the rooms in the main lodge because of the shared bathrooms and the sound of people on the main floor above your head."

•  Appropriate footwear! •  If I were to return, I would bring my own towel. •  Can't really think of anything... •  A spare laptop battery so I could work anywhere! •  I would have liked to bring a piece of Nova Scotia to Wasan as a way to say thanks •  Nothing. It was fabulous! •  A swimsuit! :) •  Nothing. •  Swimming goggles! 8-) •  A lap desk and proper exercise attire •  I forgot to pack a book to read, having focused too much on prepping for the retreat work. Would have made evenings on the dock even

more enjoyable •  Not sure there is anything - it was very enjoyable •  A flashlight. And a musical instrument. •  A hair dryer •  Magic pills against jet lag (does it exist?)" •  canoes •  Nothing •  Warmer clothes. •  Again...can't think of one •  More sweaters for the evening - it got cool. •  Nothing - you provided all I needed and then some •  Actually there was nothing missing •  A big, fluffy towel. Ear plugs (sleeping under the restaurant is difficult). •  I might have brought some extra towels - the week I was there it was quite damp, and my towel wouldn't dry between showers or swimming.

•  Less stuff. A reminder to myself to take a more minimalist approach. •  better walking shoes •  a less introvert of me. •  N/A •  A magazine for some light reading during downtime •  A stand-up paddle board :) •  I would have spent time letting go of my day to day responsibilities and been able to move more quickly to " Wasan Time" with the many

wonderful attendees. •  For the overachieving, non swimming exerciser - perhaps a spin type bike or other aerobic machine ;) •  Can't think of anything... •  as above, I can't think of anything. I was provided everything that I could possibly have wanted. •  A few more sweaters and pairs of thick socks! •  Rain jacket and layers of warm clothing to adjust for the weather- nothing else at all •  A better set of clothes to go kayaking a little further with others •  Long johns and another sweater. •  Warmer clothing! (I wasn't expecting as much rain and lower temperatures in August...but, that's not something you have any control over). •  No suggestions - all was fine. •  a better sweatshirt... •  A sketch book and writing journal. •  A flash light? •  Swimming goggles •  Maybe a board game? Sounds so trite, doesn't it? •  I can't think of anything I missed having. It was just the right amount of simplicity •  I cannot think of anything specific, I am very happy with what the island and the Wasan team offered. Thank you for the transformative

experience it was! •  - ditto •  I really felt like I had everything I need!
