TONIGHT’S GAMEThe Flyers host the Buffalo Sabres tonight in their seventh game of the year and third at home. The Flyers are 2-3-1 on the seasonafter a 3-1 loss in Montreal last night. This is the second game in the Flyers’ second set of back-to-back games this season; they playedone over their first two games of the year, and will play another one this weekend. Down 2-0 just past the halfwaypoint of the first period, the Flyers picked up a first-period goal from Chris Vandevelde, and then Brayden Schenn tied it at 8:14 of thethird. Jake McCabe restored Buffalo’s one-goal lead just over a minute later, but with the Flyers net empty and an extra attacker out,Schenn scored his second of the night on the deflection of a Claude Giroux shot with just under 54 seconds remaining to forceovertime. Girgensons scored at 2:29 of the extra period, right before Chad Johnson robbed Sam Gagner on the Buffalo doorstep.Johnson earned the win with 30 saves on 33 Flyers shots, while Steve Mason absorbed the SOL with 36 saves. Jack Eichelopened the scoring in the final minute of the first period, and Ryan O’Reilly made it 2-0 on the power play 4:20 into the third. NicolasDeslauriers made it 3-0 3:12 into the third before the Flyers increased their pressure and ended up outshooting the Sabres 14-5,including Mark Streit’s third goal of the year with 3:26 to play. Michal Neuvirth kept the score close with 33 saves on 36 shots, including29 of 31 in the first two periods, while Linus Ullmark took the win with 27 saves in his first career game against the Flyers. R.J. Umberger snapped a 13-month goal drought with the first tally of the game 1:23 into thesecond period, which started a rush of three goals in just over eight minutes. Brayden Schenn scored less than a minute later, andWayne Simmonds put one home 8:11 into the frame. Michael Raffl then made it 4-1 with 4:03 to play. Halfway through the thirdperiod, Jamie McGinn got the Sabres on the board, but it was the only one of 42 shots they were able to get by Steve Mason. NickCousins scored his first NHL goal 29 seconds after McGinn to wrap up the scoring. Shayne Gostisbehere extended his scoring streakto 10 games with an assist on the Simmonds goal, tying a Flyers franchise record. After a scoreless first period, Shea Weber put the Canadiens on theboard first when his slapshot broke Brayden Schenn’s stick in two and then slid past Steve Mason 5:28 into the second frame. TheFlyers answered a little over six minutes later on Jake Voracek’s deflection of a Claude Giroux slapshot from the point, which tiedthings at 1-1 through the second intermission. The game-winner came four seconds into Montreal’s fourth power play when AlexRadulov took a slapshot from the right point that Gallagher deflected over Mason’s shoulder. Radulov then ended things with a lateempty-netter. Mason was excellent in defeat, stopping 30 of 32 shots he faced, while Carey Price had several outstanding savesamong his 31. The Flyers are third in the league with 154 hits. Wayne Simmonds is fifth in the league with 22 hits, while Brandon Manning is tied forsixth with 21. Travis Konecny recorded points in each of his first three games, becoming the first Flyer since Justin Williams in 2000 and just thefourth in team history to accomplish the feat. Dave Hakstol was named the 19th head coach in Flyers history on May 18, 2015.  Hakstol, 47 (7/30/1968), comes to the Flyers from the University of North Dakota, where he served as the head coach of the school’s hockeyprogram for 11 seasons.  During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native ledUND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in thecountry during that span.  North Dakota won three regular-season conference titles under Hakstol (WCHA 2008-09 and 2010-11; NCHC 2014-15). Linus Ullmark earned his first NHL win against the Flyers, stopping 27 of 28 shots on Oct. 30, 2015 to become the youngest

goaltender to earn a win for the Sabres since Mika Noronen did so on Oct. 5, 2000 vs. Chicago.  SABRES IN THE TOP 10

Rasmus Ristolainen entered play Monday tied for seventh in the NHL (and third among defensemen) with five assists and ranked

12th in the league in average time on ice (24:53).

Ryan O’Reilly led all NHL forwards with an average ice time of 23:13 entering play Monday. O’Reilly finished the 2015-16 season

Dan Bylsma is in his second season as head coach of the Sabres after being hired as the 17th head coach in franchise history on May 28,2015. In his first season with the team in 2015-16, Bylsma guided the Sabres to a 27-point improvement. Buffalo finished 35-36-11 overall andenjoyed the second-largest points percentage improvement in franchise history.
