Greetings

On behalf of faculty and staff of the Ph.D. Program in Speech-Language-Hearing

Sciences, I am pleased to present you with the Fall, 2014 newsletter. This was a

very exciting semester with great achievements by students, faculty, and alumni.

This issue brings you information about the most recent research projects and

events. I would like to take this opportunity and express my gratitude for your

continuous interest and support. The generosity of our alumni provided students

with research, travel, and teaching fellowships this year. As we are getting ready to

celebrate the 50th anniversary of our program next year, we look forward to hearing

AWARDS AND HONORS

Recipients of the ASHA Honors Award

Richard Schwartz Elaine Silliman

Richard Schwartz and Elaine Silliman received Honors of the Association from the ASHA at

the Annual Conference Orlando, FL. On November 21, 2014. The award is the highest honor the

Association bestows and it was presented to Richard and Elaine at the ASHA Annual Conference

on November 21, 2014 in Orlando, FL.

Richard Schwartz, and Zarabeth Waldman-Deluca were one of twenty mentor-protege pairs

honored with the Research Mentoring-Pair Travel Award (RMPTA) for the 2014 ASHA

Convention

Eve Higby Received the Undergraduate Research and Mentoring Grant at Queens College. The

purpose of the grant is to encourage faculty to involve undergraduate students in conducting

scientific research.

Richard Goldfarb received Honors of the Association at the New York State Speech-Language-

Hearing Association in Saratoga, NY.

Karece Lopez received the Student Research Travel Award from ASHA

Jason Rosas received the 2014 Graduate Student Scholarship from ASHA.

Teresa Signorelli earned an ASHA ACE Award for Continuing Education and she also received

a grant from the Rose Badgeley Charitable Trust for research study called, Cognitive Strategies

for Improving Listening Comprehension in Aphasia.

Robert Domingo has been promoted to

Chairman if the Department of

Communication Sciences and Disorders of

LIU/Post.

Christine Kosky has earned tenure and was

promoted to Associate professor at Mercy

College.

Sandra Levey has been appointed to the

Multilingual Affairs Committee of the

international Association of Logopedics and

Phoniatrics (IALP).

Paul Milner is celebrating 25 years of his

practice, Hearing Care Center in Sharon,

MA! Congrats! The center’s website is

Loraine Obler has been voted to the

Governing Board of the Academy of

Aphasia. She also taught a short course in,

Bilingual Aging, at the MultiLing Center at

the University of Oslo in October 2014.

Barbara O’Connor Wells is now a

Program Professor in Speech Language

Pathology at Nova Southeastern University

in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Arlyne Russo has accepted an adjunct

faculty position at Sacred Heart University

in Fairfield, CT. and has a new website,

www.aerusso.com.

Teresa Signorelli launched a talk show on

child development called, Kids AtoZ with

Dr. T., on BlogTalkRadio. She was also

interviewed for Scholastic parent and Child

Magazine article,

Award makes funds available to students who travel to present research papers at conferences.

Martin Gitterman Excellence in Teaching Award: The Martin Gitterman Teaching Award gives

awards for Excellence in Teaching.

Norma Rees fellowship for scholarly excellence for doctoral students in Speech-Language-

Hearing Sciences.

These awards are given to a number of students each year. To contribute to one or either fund,

please send a check payable to The Graduate Center Foundation. All checks should include

account number 212731. Please indicate this number as well as the name of the award in which

you want your contribution placed (e.g., Bergman, Bronstein, Gitterman, Rees).

In addition to the above accounts the program also has a discretionary fund. The account number

for this fund is 213933 which the program is free to use at their discretion.
