A defense is a very stressful process, so one must be prepared to present calmly.

In this slide, my mother has come one hour early, and is going over her slides before her committee arrives.

Depending on the room size, you can invite as many people desired to a dissertation defense. My mother invited her immediate family.

As she explains her slides, her committee is listening to my mother. If you notice the committee member sitting down has paper in front of her…a PhD candidate usually prints their presentation slides to hard copy so members can go back and reference, and follow along.

After she completed her presentation, her committee critiqued her. In this slide, one of her committee members is giving her a complement on her presentation.

After the committee is done asking questions, they take a moment to go outside and evaluate the presentation, and decide whether or not the candidate passes….MY MOTHER PASSED! One of the coordinators brought mini martini glass replicas and they celebrated with apple cider.
