Special thanks to Sue in the office for coordinating the transitions from workshop/to rentals/to workshop in the Centre this winter, and to all those members who volunteered to handle the set up/take down and snacks for the workshops. Wonderful job. Check the website shortly for the fall workshops and don’t miss out.

The Loft Gallery and Gift Shop is full of artwork until the end of June. It would be beneficial to you as a member and as an artist to check it out. Then

again July 21 to August 13, the Gallery will have new artwork at the same time as the ACACA Alberta Wide Show is held in the Centre (Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday). Bring your family and your summer company along to enjoy our local

art and the winning entries from the 3 ACACA zone shows.

Good luck to those who have entered the ACACA zone shows, and hopefully we see your art at the Alberta Wide Show in the Ottewell Centre this summer. The show is a great opportunity to accumulate volunteer hours as the Loft Gallery will be open the same hours. Please contact Kay or Arlene and sign up! Check the ASSC website for dates and times available for Loft shifts.

Also start gathering up your unused supplies for the Garage Sale at the June general meeting...proceeds will go towards refreshments and coffee at the general meetings. ☺

Take time from your painting to sow a few seeds!

Regards, Sonja.

Door Prize! Looks beautiful!

Great job of hanging! In Memory of Roy McLaughlin

Advice from the Webmaster: Each user has to click on the “Show Certificate” button and select “Always trust”. The warning will go away until the certificate expires a year from now. Then you have to do this again. It’s a hassle, but necessary to prevent landing on fraudulent sites.

Comments and pictures re the Jerry Heine workshop:

“Jerry's workshop was an inspiring mix of concise, practical demonstration/instruction and personal application of skills. His down-to-earth, personable nature encouraged everyone in the class to produce thoughtful strokes of blended colour. Highly recommended.” “Jerry's artistic degree of knowledge is never-ending. He is extremely talented as shown in his work. In our workshop with Jerry, we worked from a photograph of rocks with a waterfall. He reviewed paper, paints, brushes, and techniques before we were let loose to do our work. I think the photograph was a little too difficult to work from as it was dark and I had no way of enhancing mine to see the details (print copy and tablet). I ran into a few difficulties, which I think a few other people did as well when I looked around at everyone's paintings. I will certainly try to paint this again on my own, using a lighter photograph to see the details better and applying the information we learned from Jerry.”

Library Corner: We’ve just completed another very successful ASSC Spring Art Show, and I noticed that quite a few members exhibited works using new or re-vamped styles. If you’re thinking of updating your style or maybe exploring a different subject matter, or perhaps even a whole new genre of art, our library has a vast selection of resources to inspire you. This month, Val Holts, one of the library committee members, has reviewed two new books that we recently acquired. Perhaps one of these is just what you’re looking for to pique your curiosity and creativity. Color and Light (A Guide for the Realist Painter) By James Gurney ASSC #: 2017.009 Because this author has written and illustrated a whole new world in his book ‘Dinotopia’, James Gurney’s grasp of light and color is literally beyond the norm. He has asked and answered questions I hadn’t thought of. Need to know about reflected light? JG gives you FIVE truths about this subject. Pictures and illustrations back up his theories and knowledge, all helping the reader to understand. Twenty one types of different light, 16 atmospheric effects, 21+ different articles on color/pigments/relationships and SO much more. Using a wonderful selection of old Masters, his own paintings, and illustrations, James Gurney gives short and informative answers to questions that every artist will ask themselves, sooner or later. A book to return to over and over again, all artists, realist or not, will benefit from the knowledge James Gurney shares in this book. The Encyclopedia of OIL PAINTING TECHNIQUES By Jeremy Galton ASSC #: 2017.008 A quick cursory glance through this book may pique your interest and have you trying out a new technique that you either haven’t had time for or didn’t quite know how to approach. Clear, concise and in alphabetical order for the technique section of this book, it is easy to follow and easy to find what you may be looking for - or just start at ‘A’ and follow thru to ‘Z.’ Try Dabbing – Sgraffito – Alla Prima - Corrections – Tonking – Wet into Wet. So many to explore!

Part two of this book carries into ‘Themed” painting, such as Architecture, Skies, Still Life and Water. With many photographs and paintings, the author includes demo paintings that you can follow along with, all while providing explanations on items such as perspective, working on location, unifying a painting and much, much more. Thank you to Val for the reviews and for recommending these books. If there are any resources that you think other ASSC members would enjoy and that the library should have, please let one of the library committee members know. We love to talk to you. Kind regards, The Library Committee
