PESETA vs EURO

INTRODUCTIONIn this project, we would like to analyse the change from the Peseta to the Euro, in the Spanish economical system between 20th and 21st centuries.Firstly, we are going to introduce our project, and then we will explain a little bit of the background of this historical change.Secondly, we are going to present you our narrators, and the interviews we made with them. Besides, we will show you some of our results. Finally, we will end summing up our conclusions.

BACKGROUNDIn the 1st of January of 1999 Spain and another 11 countries embraced a new common coin, the Euro. This transition had a big impact on peoples lives, as it meant for them to change the habit of using the Peseta, which had been around for 134 years. The first step the Spanish Government took in order to change from Pesetas to Euros was to stablish a proportion, 1 euro was exactly 166,386 Pesetas.

OBJECTIVESStudy the economical change from Peseta to Euros.Examine the advantages or disadvantages of this change.Analyse how this change affected to Spanish citizens lifestyle.Investigate whether the value of the euro corresponds to the pesetas one.

NARRATORSEsther, she is 57 years old. She was born in Valladolidwhen the Peseta was the official coin in Spain. For her, the change from Peseta to Euro was not very outstanding, Esther adapted quite easily to Euros.

Maria del Carmen, who is 75 years old. She was born in Burgos, and since then, she has been living there.Nowadays, she is already retired but the years before she worked as a nurse in a hospital called San Juan de Dios, in Burgos. When the change from the Peseta to the Euro occurs, she was working and this change affected greatly to her daily life.

NARRATORS

RESULTSAccording to our narrators, this change not only had some advantages like for example having a common coin in the whole Europe; but also, it had some disadvantages like the rising of Spanish way of life.

Adapting was difficult for many people because they had to do a lot of mental calculations for instance when they went shopping, specially elder people.

CONCLUSIONSWe havent found differences between our narrators, and both have been very useful for our project because they have provided us some interesting information and personal experiences about this topic. Both they keep good memories of that period, so even they saved some copies of notes and coins in pesetas.Despite all they agree with the use of the euro in Spain.
