Gardening in the Tropics with Carol Laing

It ‘s time to clear out the veggie patch, trim the shrubs, mow the lawn and

rake the leaves. All these wonderful recyclable materials make great

compost. When removing the veggies, cut them off at ground level to leave

the roots in the soil. Save the seeds for next year - gather the cut stems to

make a bunch and hang upside down in a covered area to dry. Once dry

place seeds in small airtight jars or plastic/paper bags and keep in airtight

containers in refrigerator. Seeds last for years if kept cool and dry

By saving the seeds each year and growing the next crop from these seeds

the plants becomes adapted to your climate..

Convert the lawn cuttings, garden trimmings, kitchen waste, brown leaves,

shredded paper, cardboard and mulch hay into a rich garden compost.

Build layers of brown materials and green leafy materials/kitchen scraps in

a heap or compost bin . Make a layer of green materials 2cm thick and top

with a brown layer of 6cm and keep moist. Turn in three days if it heated or

if you don’t turn these materials they will break down and make a great

addition to the garden or a worm farm. A Bokashi bin is a good substitute

for a compost heap.

It's official: We're leaving our Shields St premises and moving to Oceana Walk arcade! We'll have our last day of trading at Shields St on Saturday 9th November. We'll then have our official

reopening at Shop 9 Oceana Walk on Sunday 1st December. To farewell our Shields St shop we're hosting a party on Saturday 9th November from 4pm:

There'll be music, games, food and drink. All are invited. We're also asking for help with closing up the old shop and getting set up at the new. Our first working bee is on Monday 11th November. We'll start at 9:00am and work through until afternoon. This first working bee will be focused on

clearing waste, recycling and unneeded items from the shop. There'll be several pieces of furniture and lots of small items in need of new homes.

Hope you can join us!

Australasian Permaculture Convergence 2020 Celebrating Nature’s Abundance

Monday 20 April to Thursday 23 April 2020

at Camp Kindilan, Redland Bay, Queensland.

The 2020 Australasian Permaculture Convergence is a biennial gathering of permaculture people from around the country and the Asia Pacific region. All people with an interest in permaculture and regenerative development are invited to join us for 4 days of workshops, hands-on activities, and discussions on how we can both celebrate and support nature’s abundance.

The Quandamooka First Nations people are the traditional custodians of North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) and the Southern Moreton Bay region including Redland Bay. We pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging. For more information on their activities visit their website Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation. The Convergence is being organised by Northey Street City Farm on behalf of Permaculture Australia. The program will include talks and workshops covering topics relevant to the three ethics of Permaculture, which are Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. We feel it is important to explore the bigger picture of what true sustainability entails. Earth Care is obviously essential, however without People Care and nurturing healthy, sustainable relating, the task of coming together and working as a community can be greatly hindered. Finally, if attention and conscious intention isn’t given to the economic sustainability of communities, and the distribution of resources isn’t managed equitably, then communities may struggle to be truly sustainable in the long term. As well as thought-provoking keynote speakers, the daytime workshops will each be 90 minutes long to allow for more participation and hands-on activities. There will also be opportunities for some 10-minute presentations or project reports one evening, and a project poster display area to share your projects with everyone at the Convergence. Keynote speakers confirmed so far include Starhawk, Stuart Andrews and Robyn Francis.
