Guest speaker:
Peter Thomas is the proprietor of Performance Mowers and Chainsaws in Anderson
Street Cairns. He has been in the motor industry all his life and did his
apprenticeship in Cairns. He has specialized in small engine driven tools and
machinery in the last 10 years.
Peter will focus on smaller engines that some of us use every day. He will talk about
getting to know the machine you have, how it works, spare parts availability and the
lifespan of the fuel ( fuel is the largest problem with engine breakdowns)
In Permaculture we do our best to minimize the use of machinery however in
development stages, machines are useful. Mowers, chainsaws and other machines
with petrol and diesel driven engines are required and may be required for a long
time yet.
LAST MONTHS’ GUEST SPEAKER
Svargo Freitag a Director of The Kanjini Co-op explained the Vision and the Co-
ops’ plans for creating a community on 7500 acres of land close to the Emerald
Creek Falls near Mareeba.
Their Mission is to live harmoniously as a mutually supportive and diverse
community, to create abundance while being sensitive to sustainability and our
ecological footprint.

The 12 Principles of Permaculture as written by David Holmgrem.
Principle 8. Intergrate rather than segregate
By putting the right things in the right place, relationships develop between them and they support each other.
If you would like to know more about David Holgrom’s Principles and Practices of Permaculture see them at http://permacultureprinciples.com
..............................................................................................................................
AND how did it all begin? “It wasn’t until the 1950s that I noticed that large parts of the system were disappearing. First fish stocks became extinct. Then the seaweed around the shorelines went. Large patches of forest began to die. I hadn’t realised until those things had gone that I’d had become very fond of them, that I was in love with my country. I started to realise that I knew a lot about physics but wasn’t applying it to how I heated my house. And I was an expert on ecology but wasn’t putting that into practice in my garden. I knew that I needed to convert the principles of environmental science into directives for planning, and then the idea of permaculture came to me. It was like a shift in my brain, and suddenly I couldn’t write it down fast enough. I felt like there was a roll of carpet tied up with string at my feet. Once I had cut the string, it just unrolled to the horizon and I could see forever, and nothing that has happened since has ever surprised me.
Agriculture is one of the greatest contributors to the destruction of our environment. Forty per cent of the world’s soils and water has been polluted by farming. The great challenge for sustainable agriculture is to produce the food and fibre needed, while maintaining fertile soils and clean water, and enhancing the health of ecosystems.”
Bill Mollison www.abc.net.au/rural/legends/stories/4_1.htm
What is stopping Permaculture from
becoming mainstream?
It takes time for a disruptive innovation such as permaculture to
impact on established and successful civilisation. An irrational
inertia kicks in to maintain things the way things were. This
irrational inertia stems from clinging to world views that come from
simpler times. Research in psychology commenced in the 1950s by
Dr. Clare W. Graves revealed the existence of different patterns or
worldviews of human consciousness that evolved in response to
changing inner and outer life conditions over the last 120,000 years.
Each pattern in thinking has resulted in general shifts of civiliz-
ational styles, ranging from survival clans, to ethnic tribes, to feudal
empires, to national states, to corporate states, to value communities
and beyond. It is the national states and corporate states that
created and sustains chemical-based industrial agriculture.
The research clearly highlights that over the last 100 years, for many
individuals there are signs of a major leap towards new awareness
that is aligned with the way all life works.
As life conditions on the planet become more complex, we will see
more people evolve into Integral Consciousness where all decisions
are based upon the magnificence of existence: where all-life
embracing beneficial abundance becomes a distinct probability; and
there is an innate capacity to adapt to and stabilize our planets
ecosystems for the long run of time.
When we look at how the future will unfold as Integral
Consciousness assumes a grand scale, we will see people reassessing
what’s important. We can anticipate a shift from physical
accumulation to intellectual, emotional, relational and spiritual
exploration. We will see the pursuit of wellbeing where less is more,
through elegant simplicity. Anticipate the accelerated release of
technology beneficial to all life, focused on the provision of basic
needs such as water, food, energy, community, information and
mobility.
These are the life conditions that will allow the message in the bottle
about permaculture to be fully utilised. Integral awareness itself
will create a surge in demand for permacultue and all it offers.
We offer five ideas about what comes next naturally, in our evolution
as a species, to explore and develop together.
We offer five ideas about what comes next naturally, in our
evolution as a species, to explore and develop together.
1. A new generation of easily accessible measurement instruments
are required to assess the vitality of soil, plants, animals and
humans. (CSIRO is working on this right now)
2. We need to incorporate an understanding of the subtle yet vast
dynamics of the microbiome in the way we grow and eat food. This is
an emergent deep science that examines the complex eco-
intelligences and subtle information exchanges that are at play in
soil for growing food, and in the gut for digesting food.
3. Nutritional and habitat requirements vary with each stage of
human development. Reframing garden and home design as being
about human evolution allows us to dramatically rethink every basic
assumption.
4. Human evolution is inevitable and can be eased and accelerated
through governance, design and innovation that are beneficial for all
life.
5. A living organism of trusted and respected global wisdom, gained
through collaboration with other growers on the same pathway is
needed to overcome our irrational resistance to change.
Permaculture has an essential role to play in the conscious redesign
of our nutritional ecosystem. Dr. Graves provides us with maps for
navigation human consciousness. We advocate that permaculturists
become familiar with these maps of consciousness in order to
develop premature to support the evolution of humanity with
beneficially abundant food and habitat.

book, Spiral Dynamics, by Dr. Dion Beck and Chris Cowan, or visit

The working bee last month was not well attended, only Tegan, Lania and Carol were then for a
couple of hours and then Zane turned up, when we were about to knock off. We trimmed the trees
and vines and tidied up the site. Mulched part of the area but there is still half of the area to do.
So could we look forward to some more help next time. After all we have the use of the building
and grounds for our events free of charge surely we can keep it looking good – many hands make
light work. Perhaps after work in the afternoons for an hour or so would be good – what do you
say??
Tegan , Bruce and Leon are the organisers for the Monthly Meetings if you have something to add to the meetings please speak with one of these great people. Ideas for Guest speakers are welcome.
NEXT SKILLING WORKSHOP will be in September This month has been a very busy month with lots of events taking place, personal
ones and others and has therefore been difficult to find a free Saturday for a
workshop. Only 5 people have expressed an interest in the Cooking of Tropical
Vegetables Workshop so have postponed this workshop until next month to give
more people time to register an interest in attending.
JULY SKILLING WORKSHOP
Last months’ Wicking Bed workshop on the Saturday the 6
th JULY went well with 10 people
putting together a wicking bed to take home for planting up. Len and Wendy did a great job of
explaining the system and how it works, it will certainly save water and a lot of worry if you can’t
get home to water the plants every day. Although this workshop was only for a small bed, the
actual design can be incorporated into any container with a hole for drainage or in the ground if
the site is sloping and allows for drainage of excess water.
For morning tea Wendy made this extraordinary Banana cake and we all wanted the recipe, so
here it is.
Banana Cake
125 g softened butter 1 ½ cups castor sugar 2 eggs beaten 1 cup (approx 3) mashed bananas A few drops vanilla 250 g plain flour 1 tsp bicarbonate soda ½ tsp salt ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground allspice ½ cup butter or ½ cup milk with 1 tsp lemon juice Butter and flour a 20cm cake tin then line base with baking or brown paper. Preheat oven to 180 F Cream butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Beat in eggs, banana and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients and add to mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Spoon into tin and bake for 45 minutes or until cake test clean. Lemon syrup Juice of one lemon 150g castor sugar Dissolve sugar Spoon syrup over hot cake while it is still in the cake tin. Cool cake in its tine on a wire rack for a few minutes before turning out. Cool completely before cutting or storing in an airtight tin.

Food Standards Australia calls for submissions on
GMO soybean application Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ)as invited
submissions on an application to change the Food Standards
Code to allow food derived from a genetically modified
soybean.
The application , submitted by Bayer CropScience and
Synegenta Seeds, sought permission to allow food derived
from a soybean genetically modified to be tolerant to two
herbicides, glufosinate-ammonium and mesotrione.
The FSANZ safety assessment found no public health or safety
concerns and food from this soybean line is as safe for
human consumption as food derived from conventional soybean.
FSANZ welcomes comments from government agencies, public
health professionals, industry and the community. The
closing date for submissions is 23 August 2013 full details
of the application and how to make a submission can be found

E-waste Recycling comes to FNQ ?
The Scheme started in 2012 down south and aims to lift television
and computer recycling from the current low rate of around 17 per
cent to 80 per cent by 2021-22. This is important because these
products contain valuable materials that can be re-used, as well as
substances which are hazardous to humans and the environment.
The scheme will be funded and run by industry. The television and
computer industry is now required by law to collect televisions and
computers for recycling, and meet progressive recycling targets and
criteria for safety and good environmental practice. All Scheme
recycling arrangements must be approved by government.
Householders and small business won’t have to pay fees at the time
of disposal.

Announcements from our Ministers – 1 August
The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr launches Australia’s most powerful supercomputer, which also ranks as one of the largest in the world will enable scientists to gain new and valuable insights into issues of pressing national importance like climate change, water management and earth science. It also features a high capacity data storage and cloud computing systems in a purpose-built, state of the art data centre. The amount of information available to researchers is rapidly increasing, and it takes a big computer to crunch big data. Much more info: http://minister.innovation.gov.au/honkimcarr/media
Federal Minister for Climate Change, Mark Butler today announced construction will start in January on the largest solar power station in the southern hemisphere after the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) reached financial close with AGL Energy Limited. This project is 15 times larger than any other solar power station in Australia. The project will be built across two sites in Western NSW and will cover a combined area four times the size of the Sydney CBD.
Much more info: http://minister.innovation.gov.au/markbutler/media.
CSIRO news: The latest CSIRO magazine ECOS has an article on Dr. Jeff Baldock talking about
his work on soils and soil carbon, and explains how CSIRO is supporting land
managers to increase carbon in our agricultural soils and take advantage of the
federal government’s Carbon Farming Initiative.

Beyond Zero Emissions
Launched the Buildings Plan in Melbourne and it was a great
success. (The Building Plan is part of the Zero Carbon Australia
Project which consists of six transitions plans covering the 6 sectors
of energy, buildings, transport, land use, industrial processes and
coal exports.)
The Building Plan report has certainly met with praise from experts
in the field. Dominique Hes, Senior Architecture lecturer at the
University of Melbourne, told the launch in Melbourne that the plan
is “the largest crowd-sourced research project yet, and has
maintained high academic quality,” and that she very much hopes to
use it in her teaching! Soon there will be numerous reviews and
media articles covering the Plan available on our website, and soon
the Plan itself will be available for download. http://www.bze.org.au
Graphene: 200 times stronger than steel…150,000 times
thinner than a human hair…more flexible than a sheet of paper It is a newly discovered, very special refined form of graphite. It is a one-atom-thick
sheet of densely packed carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice.
Take a look
Put simply, it is a sheet of carbon atoms 150,000 times thinner than a human hair.
Under a powerful microscope, it looks like chicken wire. But what is so special
about it? Everything- for starters, it is 200 times stronger than structural steel. So
strong you could suspend an elephant from a single strand of grapheme and the
strand would not break. It is extremely lightweight too. So in everything from
bicycles and boats to aeroplanes and cars could be made out of grapheme
composites. And when they are, their energy efficiency and durability could
skyrocket. But that is just the beginning of what this new smart material can do..
Not only is it the strongest material researchers have ever tested -it is also one of the
best conductors man has ever found. IBM has already created a graphene-based
processor capable of executing 100 billion cycles per second. Researchers believe
that in the future, a graphene credit card could store as much information as today’s
computers.
This one material alone could prove more revolutionary than – and soon
REPLACE – plastic, Kevlar and the silicon chip.
In fact, it is such a breakthrough that the first two scientists to successfully produce
single-atom-thick crystals of grapheme were awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in
Physics.
You are looking at a simultaneous eruption of new-age
technologies that will alter our lives on a scale not seen for
100 years.
All this technological change and innovation will transform the world…
‘Nano’ batteries, will charge your mobile in seconds – and even power whole cities...
‘Smartphones’ will carry the computing power of IBM’s Watson Supercomputer…
A new era of computing mobility – none of the solid rectangular things we carry
now but flexible, wearable devices...
Handheld ‘breathalysers will diagnose disease in seconds…
Bionic limbs with human fluidity and dexterity, but the strength of Superman!
Spacecraft with the capacity to take us beyond our solar system into places and
worlds never explored..
Google – “graphene “to read more about this fantastic new material
