A short historyThis year marks a major milestone forNew Directions – it is 20 years sincewe started, initially in an office just off the Grassmarket in Edinburgh, workingas consultants, trainers, facilitators andcorporate communicators, specialisingin major organisation changeprogrammes. In the early days thismeant TQM, organisational excellence,multi-skill teams and participativemanagement-helping others achievetheir New Directions.
An early New Direction withLondon and Lausanne basedconsultants formed Castle ConsultantsInternational offering influencing andnegotiation skills training to

New Directions in the early 1990sinvolved recession and downturn—weclosed down our video production arm,and much of our consulting workinvolved downsizing. But we did findNew Directions in the work we did inEastern and Central Europe with R JReynolds International, helping themgrow from a 150 person export salesand marketing operation in Geneva to afully integrated business employingover 6,000 people in every country inthe region in 3 years. Quite a changeprogramme!
The end of the 1990s saw NewDirections in Africa, working withBarclays Bank to introduce perform-ance management and develop localtalent over a three year period. InScotland, major strategic managementskills development for local authoritiesand work with Scottish Enterprise on
the economic future of Scotlandbrought the use of large groupprocesses and Appreciative Inquiryinto use for the first time.
The new millennium brought moreNew Directions with a change of location from Edinburgh to Bristol andnew clients in the Middle East, Europeand the USA—still with the coreactivities of strategic change andmanagement development. And a newpartnership in Learning Consortium, aEuropean network of consultantsfocuses on our own learning and onpersonal development and coaching.
