During his undergradu-ate years, Gerald Jilian Rait and his two friends were always nagged by a female friend they nicknamed ‘Mum-

my’. Little did the site engineer know at the

time, however, that ‘Mummy’ would be his future wife.

Gerald and Florina Karen Jones, both 29, attended Labuan Matriculation College and Universiti Malaysia Pahang together but they only became friends during the second year of studying their degrees.

“I was chatting with a male friend on Yahoo messenger. As it turned out it was Gerald who was chatting with me under our mutual friend’s ID,” Florina said as she reminisced how they fi rst became friends.

They offi cially started dating on Apr 21, 2006.

As college sweet-hearts, Florina and

Gerald graduated and faced the real life struggles of

their fi rst jobs together. After few years of dat-ing, the time came for them to settle down.

On planning the wedding, Florina said: “We did not have huge arguments while planning for our wedding because we had total control over the budget.”

The sales and application engineer shared they only ever had a disagreement about the location. Since Gerald is an Iban from Miri and Florina, a Bidayuh from Serian, the initial plan was to hold their wedding celebrations in both Miri and Serian.

It so happened that as they were planning their weddings, Gerald found their new home, and so it became a choice between a house or a big wedding.

“Due to the very tight budget we had at that

time, plus the fact that housing prices are get-ting scary every year, we decided to have a simple fat wedding in my kampong.”

They decided to forego the celebration in Miri since it would cost more to have a hotel wedding reception but all was well as they said their vows before God, families and friends at St Jude Catholic Church Bunan Gega, Serian on Dec 21, 2013.

A day after Christmas last year, their families and friends came from all over Sarawak to celebrate their matrimonial union at Kampung Lobang Batu.

When asked whether she would change anything about their wedding day, she replied: “What is the thing I would change? I would say nothing. We only regretted that we did not rent the PA system and disco stage setup for a longer time as our guests were still hyped up to hit the dance fl oor even after the reception ended.”

Joana Merlyshia Jekal, 26, fi rst met Mohd Nasrun Sahibol, 31, through a mutual friend back in 2009.

Throughout their courtship they knew they were going to spend the

rest of their lives together. After Nasrun, a meter reader for Sabah

State Water Department plucked up the cour-age to meet Joana’s parents to ask for her hand in marriage, they fi nally got engaged on Oct 11, 2013.

The fi rst storm they had to weather together as an engaged couple was when Nasrun’s mother fell ill and had to seek treatment in Peninsular Malaysia.

They postponed their wedding date, but it was all teamwork for Joana and Nasrun. They worked together in every detail of their wedding - even deciding on the bridal dais. In planning for the perfect celebration, their journey even took them to the Peninsular to shop for their wedding supplies and ac-coutrements.

Working as an administrator for The Peo-ple’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) Joana admit-

ted, “We did argue on a few things while preparing for our wedding, especially about the dowry. We even argued about the style and colour of our wedding attires.”

In the end, Nasrun gave in to Joana’s choices. “I’m blessed to have a patient husband,” she said.

When they came across any problems they could not handle, Joana and Nasrun turned to both their parents.

“It is best to seek advice from those who are more experienced,” Joana advised.

She married Nasrun, the love of her life on Aug 2, 2014.

While Nasrun is a Bajau, Joana, of mixed Bajau and Bugis parentage said her sweetest memory was being able to wear both Bajau and Bugis traditional costumes on her big day.

According to her, traditional attire is rarely worn nowadays especially by the younger generation. Joana shared that she was beaming with pride being able to include some traditional elements on her wedding

ceremony. Looking back, Joana said she would not

change anything about her wedding day. “There were a few tiny problems we could not avoid but everything else went well. We could not satisfy everybody but the most important thing was we fi nally became husband and wife.”

They know each other so well, probably because they have been dating for 10 years.

Safety offi cer, Gary Hii, 27, and Canny Lee, 26, were high school sweethearts and

marrying each other was never out of the question. “The wedding plan actually only took us few months

as we just wanted a simple and easy wedding,” said Lee who was working as a logistic executive at the time.

It was smooth sailing for this couple as they had the same vision of what they wanted to plan for their wedding and who would take care of what.

On June 6, 2012 they married in Bintulu.Two years have passed since they were declared

husband and wife, yet the memories still linger with Canny.

“My favourite moment during the wedding was after the night-time ceremony when my husband carried me all the way from the outside of our house into our room,” she said, “It was from the road junction, by the way, and our house is a double storey house. It took us 10 minutes to reach our room!”
