Pallottine Charism in the Serviceof the Parishes

From September 10-18, 2008, I attended in Rome thefirst course of an ongoing formation for PallottineParish priests entitled “Pallottine Charism In the Ser-vice of the Parishes.” We came together, 26 pastorsfrom around the world, representing Provinces andRegions of our Society of the Catholic Apostolate. Allmembers shared their experiences in incarnating the Pallottine Charism in theirparishes, and in their efforts to establish the UAC and challenges in collaborat-ing with its members.

We also learn more about the life-experience and ecclesial vision of St.Vincent Pallotti by visiting the Institute of St Vincent Pallotti and the places ofhis activities. We walked through the streets of Rome to visit the different siteswhere St. Vincent developed his apostolate. We visited the Congregation forthe Evangelization of the People and the Pontifical Council for the Laity. Thishelped us to understand their functions and our role in realizing the kingdom ofGod . The meeting re-emphasized the need for incarnating the Pallottinespirituality, which is collaborative in nature and communal in spirit in ourparishes and apostolates. In a special presentation the Rector-General of thePallottines, Fr. Fritz Kretz, highlighted the need for realizing the “CenacleSpirituality” by promoting the UAC in all our Parishes.

The General Council of the Pallottines also shared thoughts on the role ofPastors and how they can have a greater apostolic effectiveness in the ministryof the Society of Catholic Apostolate. One of the conclusions of this coursewas that we promote communication and cooperation among the Pallottineparishes in the world, and the increase of the participants’ knowledge ofdifferent ways of pastoral work in the parishes.

I personally enjoyed this Pallottine pilgrimage to the sources of our founda-tion. Hopefully this experience will redound in greater benefit in our sharingthe Good News of Salvation.

PallottineMissionarieson the Move

Why Zambia? For thePallottines the answeris simple: “becausethe needs there are sogreat!” One doesn’t have to look very hardto see why to Pallottines came toZambia. This once middle-incomecountry with a rich history in cop-per mining has been sliding intopoverty since the 1970’s, a slidefrom which it has not recovered. In2000 the nation’s foreign debt ex-ceeded six billion dollars, the annualper capita income dropped to $395,and 68% of the population now livebelow the poverty level. Life ex-pectancy at birth is only 37 years duein part to the estimated 17% of theadult population living with HIV/AIDS. Often, those infected passaway between the ages of 25-35,leaving behind battered families andthousands of orphaned children.

This is why the Pallottines arein Zambia. As the needs grow sodoes our love and concern for thepeople.

In 2005 our Pallottines from the In-dian Nagpur Province began theirministry at Holy Family Parish toprovide pastoral care for the localpeople, to assist those with HIV/AIDS, to provide education for themany orphans in the area and to pavethe way for the future formation ofnative Pallottine priests and broth-ers in Zambia.

Currently, two Indian Pallottines servethe parish, Fathers Matthew and Tho-mas. Within the next year, one or twoadditional Pallottines will be coming toserve at the Formation House which willopen soon. The parish is located on theoutskirts of Lusaka, the capitol of Zam-bia and is responsible for the two mis-sion stations of Divine Mercy Churchand St. Mary’s Church with approxi-mately 30,000 Catholics in the area.With so many people to serve, the needsof the parish are overwhelming.

At present, the two top priorities areproviding food baskets for HIV/AIDSfamilies and educating the orphans. Aswe begin 2009, we hope to gatherenough funds to provide food basket for100 families and to gather enoughmoney for 50 orphans to attend schoolthis year and continue their education

through high school. As modest as thesegoals may seems, achieving them willgo far to raise the hopes and dreams ofmany of the local people for a brighterand happier future.

Interestingly, the Pallottines are try-ing to increase their abilities to help oth-ers not just through donations which arealways needed, but also by adding a self-supporting element to their missionarywork. A building project is currently un-derway that will help provide needed in-come to the mission from renting houses.For the cost of $7,500 per unit the Pal-lottines are building one level homeswith a kitchen, bathroom, living roomand two bedrooms. Five homes are inthe planning stage, with one ready to bebuilt with the funds provided by the Pal-lottines in Milwaukee. The money re-ceived from renting these homes to more

moderate income fami-lies will generate a reli-able and steady incomefor the Pallottines to helpthe poorer people and theorphans in the area.

Looking to the futureof the Zambia mission,the Pallottines have alsostarted a house of forma-tion near Lusaka to edu-cate and train native priests and broth-ers. A native clergy and brothers willhelp assure the continuation of theZambia mission and allow for its fu-ture expansion in other areas of thecountry.

With help from our Milwaukee prov-ince $80,000 has already been sent toFathers Matthew and Thomas so thatthey could go ahead with the purchaseof a 23 acre parcel of land with severalusable buildings on it. Since the costof building new facilities is so high inZambia due to the price of materialsand the shipping of those materials, itwas thought better to purchase exist-ing structures and remodel them to suitour needs. One of the buildings on thepresent site will have room for severalpriests and brothers and four or five stu-dents. Other buildings on the propertywill be remodeled and improved asfunds and needs arise. A good start toa needed project!

WePallottines in Milwaukee have commit-ted $125,000 to help in this great work($80,000 of which we have already sent)and we hope to solicit an additional$125,000 from our faithful friends andbenefactors so that our mission workcan flourish in the years to come.

A Look at the WorldSecularization by Fr. Bruce Schute, SAC

In Nov. 2008 Carl Anderson, a noted speaker from theKnights of Columbus, spoke at a meeting of the PontificalCouncil of the Laity. His speech was reprinted in the article “ACatholic Difference.” Columbia (January 2009). As a major reference point, Anderson cited the book, “TheSecular City,” by Harvard theologian Harvey Cox. Coxcontended that secularization is emancipation (freeing from the religious bounds) andthat it “is the legitimate consequence of the impact of biblical faith on history.”Moreover, he maintained, “We must learn . . . to speak of God in a secular fashion andfind a non-religious interpretation of biblical concepts.” In the April 2008 edition of “FIRST THINGS.” noted writer, George Weigel, saysthat from this book came many ideas that not only affected religion but also the politicsof the Sixties and today: “The cult of the new; fondness for revolutionary rhetoric: evilunderstood in therapeutic categories; worship conceived as self-realization; celebra-tion of action detached from either contemplation or serious intellectual reflection;insouciance (lack of concern) toward tradition; moralism in place of moral reasoning;identification of human striving with the in-breaking of the Kingdom of God. WhateverHarvey Cox’s intentions, these are the things that people learned from The SecularCity and its sundry offspring in the world of liberal American religious thought.” I personally have a hard time giving so much credit to this book for such a strongimpact on Christian belief and the political scene. This was the time just after the closeof the Vatican II Council. In our Society of the Catholic Apostate (SAC) a generalchapter was held in Rome 1969. There was a concern about how the church, with onemission, needs to act on two levels. First, the church strives by evangelization to makeof all a “people of God.” However, and this is important, the church offers her servicesso that the world may obtain its own perfection. Vatican II stressed the importance ofserving the world so that this perfection might be achieved. By 1989 the Pallottine document, Together We Journey – Together We Serve, spokeabout the importance of world ideas – democracy as a political ideal and alsosecularization to advance technology as progress for all. However, many bad thingshappened. Some people lost a sense of God. Prayer was not seen as helpful, and thepursuit of newer pleasures became more powerful that inner values. When isolation setsin, people may seek consolation in drug dependence or sexual acting out. In simple terms Secularism and it’s oft used adjoining word secular has the meaningof living as if God did not exist. In the words of Pope Benedict, “the values of existencegive meaning to life and can satisfy the restless heart in its search for happiness.” Theseinclude “the dignity and freedom of the person, the equality of all mankind, and thesense of life and death and of what awaits us at the end of earthly existence.” Our task as members of the church is to show a distinctive authentic Christian witness.Another way of speaking about a response is, “the recovery of a fundamentallyChristian way of thinking is a prerequisite to a Christian way of living.”

Question # 22: What is the Story of Queen of Apostles Seminary? Part VII

When the new program commenced inthe fall of 1964, and twenty-five residentnon-seminarians enrolled, Moehler’s con-cerns came true: the mixture of seminar-ians, non-seminarians and brother candi-dates was unstable and worked to the dis-advantage of the numerically smaller reli-gious candidates. Heinrichs admittedopenly in the November Provincial Chap-ter that since the lay students were indif-ferent to spiritual matters (and) their in-terests were so divergent from those of theother two groups (brother candidates andseminarians) that no further admittance toQAS be granted on a residence basis tostudents not desiring to be either seminar-ians or brother candidates.

What Heinrichs proposed instead wasa day school to be operated for non-semi-narians to be run in conjunction with theminor seminary and the Brother candidateschool. The Chapter then endorsed a reso-lution adding a day school to the Madisonseminary. The Provincial Council ap-proved the resolution and Liebl wrote forpermission to institute the day-school.

Opening the door to day students withthe hope that there would be some reason-able separation from seminarians andbrother candidates was a major move andone that gave members some pause. Afterall, the seminary had been successful inaccomplishing the goal for which it hadbeen established in the first place: recruit-ing new clerics and brothers to the commu-nity. To jeopardize that task was poten-

tially lethal to the future of the province.Yet, the numbers of Pallottine seminar-ians were not then nor had they ever beenadequate to sustain the seminary finan-cially or otherwise. Lay students werenecessary and accommodating their needshad to be done. Liebl noted in a letter tothe Province, ‘’To place them (the non-seminarians/brother-candidates) in a dis-tinctly secondary position as far as thenew high school is concerned would bedefinitely wrong and contrary to the di-rectives of the Provincial Chapter.

In what, in hindsight, would be aninterim phase of the metamorphosis ofQueen of Apostles, considerable effortswere made to run a two-track system: aseminary program directed by Father JohnHaas and a regular boys high school di-rected by Heinrichs. Symbolic of this wasthe renaming of Queen of Apostles in the1965-1966 academic year “Queen ofApostles Seminary and High School.”Anxious to maintain some place for thecultivation of clerical and brother voca-tions in the institution, a regimen of studyand spiritual exercises was determined aswell as a program of “asceticism whichdictated certain directions for extracur-ricular activities such as athletic events,time spent in the seminary. Yet the direc-tives also carefully delimited the extendto which non-seminarians were compelledto observe these residual elements of theenclosed seminary life. Moreover semi-narians who changed their status to laystudents were also permitted to remain at

Queen of Apostles. The efforts to bal-ance seminarian and non-seminarian cli-entele were understandable but in hind-sight, chimerical. Even had Vatican IInot redefined the nature of priestly lifeand reformed the elements of priestlyformation, the physical proximity of semi-narian and lay students would have com-pelled changes. This was in evidencealready in the second semester of the firstyear of the changes at QAS. A decisionof the provincial council noted, “TheQueen of Apostles High School may useseminarians and brother candidates ontheir varsity baseball team for 1966 asonly as this is not detrimental to theseminarian training program in the judg-ment of the Director of the seminary.”

As the internal workings of the semi-

nary continued to evolve, financial wor-ries continued as well. In 1967, BishopO’Connor resigned in February and wasreplaced by former Chicago AuxiliaryCletus F. O’Donnell. While no internalPallottine reaction to O’Donnell’s appoint-ment is extant, his reputation as a friendlyand effective administrator preceded him.Moreover, another factor that may haveheartened Pallottines was that the ChicagoArchdiocese had placed a great deal ofemphasis on Catholic high school. In anyevent O’Donnell was a new face and po-tentially open to some sort of support ofthe struggling Queen of Apostles venture. A new form of oversight emerged withthe creation of a Province Finance Com-mittee established by the provincial Coun-cil in June 1967, consisting of FathersJohn Becker, Lee Mayer, Joseph Zimmer,Ray Piskula, Harold Liebl, and BrotherRobert Sullivan. The finances of Queen ofApostles, which still carried its heavy mort-gage debt, were uppermost in the minds ofthe committee. In preparation for a sum-mit meeting with O’Donnell on the futureof the school, the Pallottines attempted tomarshal a substantial body of informationregarding the fiscal realities of Queen ofApostles and to press for diocesan supportfor the institution as a high school thatcould attract the students of the east side ofMadison. Sources are unclear, but thismeeting took place sometime in late 1967or early 1968.

At least as far as Pallottine sources areconcerned, these efforts were not fruitful.O’Donnell dodged the issue of diocesansupport by throwing it back to the pastorsof Madison as to whether they could finan-cially assist the seminary. The pastorsthemselves threw it back to the DiocesanEducation Committee (on which Heinrichs

Greetings from Mayo Clinic,Rochester, Minnesota

self. I am glad to hear that everything is going well at theparish and I appreciate the continued support of so many parishioners, the parishstaff and Fr. Sergio, who was recently installed as the new pastor by Bishop Sklba.

Just prior to my arriving here in Minnesota I took a trip to Rome and also had agreat visit with my family in India during the latter part of July and early August. MyClinic program began on August 21st. I have been on the go even since. At about 7a.m. I commute every day to Mayo by bus. We are given free passes for the bus. Ican catch the bus right where I live, so I don’t have to drive in the snow! I returnhome about 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. In addition, once a week I am on nightcall and have to be in the hospital from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m.. When I am on call onSaturday nights, I conduct two interdenominational worship services which are madeavailable for the patients on TV.

We are six people in my group, four women and two men, from five denomina-tions. Every day we have a couple of hours of group work and the rest of the timewe visit with patients. Then every week we have a lecture presentation. Each one ofus is assigned a particular floor for each semester during this four semester program.I am in the vascular section, mainly dealing with aneurysms and heart surgeries. It isa great experience spending time with people from all over the country and evenfrom outside the country. There is a good team spirit and commitment here. Ourmotto is “the need of the patient comes first!” I seldom hear any patient complaints.

In the group work, we share our experiences of visiting with patients and receivefeedback so that we can improve on our visits. We also have to write in detail on asingle visit (a Verbatim) every two weeks and present it to the group. When weconduct services, our homilies are recorded and evaluated by the group. Anotherlearning experience! Overall, I am really enjoying my time here. I love visitingpatients and their families. The group members are a great, well-motivated group. Ido miss the variety of parish life, but this is a unique opportunity for me. It gives metime to reflect on my experiences in the parish. Time is flying by and our firstquarter will be over before Thanksgiving. Over that holiday I plan to spend a fewdays with my brother and his family in California. Peace and love to you all!

Fr. Vensus George, SAC, Pallottine from the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin MaryProvince in India, has written a book of reflections based on the thoughts of our founder, St.Vincent Pallotti. We would like to share some of these reflections to help you on your spiritualjourney.

Since God is the Beginning andthe End of all things, according toSt. Vincent Pallotti, whatever hap-pens in this world happens becauseof His design and power. Therefore,St. Vincent had a faith-vision of Godas directing and guiding everything,including his life in the world.Hence God is the foundation of ev-ery event that occurs in the world.Since God is the foundation of ev-erything that takes place in theworld, a person must raise his/herheart and mind to God in gratitude,for every event that happens in his/her life. These events reveal to thehuman person, the nature of God,what God’s plans are, and what Godwants of him/her to accomplish inlife in the world. Therefore, everyevent that happens in a person’s ev-eryday living, i.e. what one sees,reads, knows and feels deep withinhim or herself are occasions, inwhich the plan of God for man isrevealed. Hence, all these events areoccasions for which we need to givehonor and glory to God. The real-ization of this truth made St. Vincent

to lift his mind up to God in gratitudefor everything that happened in his life.He expressed his gratitude by makinguse of each of these events as opportu-nities to give infinite glory to God.

Questions for our Reflection

1) Do I have a faith-vision to see thehand of God in everything that happensin my life?

2) Do the everyday events that happenin my life reveal God’s plan for me?

3) Do I make use of these daily andordinary events to proclaim the gloryand honor of God?

Declare each day that he (God) is theone who saves! Show his glory to thenations! Tell everyone about hismiracles. For the Lord is great andshould be highly praised. (I Chro.16:23-25)

Ask FatherI’m Not Comfortable with Allthe Changes in the Mass!Dear Father, Recently my pastor got up in thepulpit and told us that more changeswere coming to the Mass (Liturgy ashe called it). My immediate reactionwas why can’t they just leave thingsalone? I’m tired of all the changes atMass. And from the grumblings Ihear from others, I’m not alone infeeling this way. I’d just like to knowwhat you think about changes in theMass.

Dear Tammy,

I smiled when I read your letter be-cause I too hear the grumblings alongwith the phrase “Here we go again!”You also made me think of a friend ofmine who refused to let a computerinto his house. His kids were nothappy, but he was insistent. So I keptasking him why he was so against hav-ing a computer. After a long “discus-sion” it finally came down to “I don’tknow how to use one and I don’t wantmy kids to think I’m stupid!”

At one time or other all of us haveresisted change. We like what we have,new things make us uneasy, we likeour comfort zone, we’re not sure wecan adjust. Believe me, this “list”could go on for several more pages!

Needless to say, resistance to changeis not uncommon, so why should wethink it would be any different whenit comes to the Mass?

People who go to Mass enjoy theircomfort zone too. They come to pray.They like familiar surroundings (a fa-vorite pew, a spot near the statue ofMary, etc.) They like to say prayersand sing songs they know by heart.They know when to sit, kneel andgenuflect, and they don’t want tochange. To top it off, they like it whenthey can go to ANY Catholic churchand be comfortable doing the identi-cal things there. Yes, change is notalways easy or welcomed, but if all wedo is resist it, we will be miserable andhate going to Mass. NOT GOOD!However, if we “give it the old col-lege try” we might find that we like atleast some of the changes.

Apple Loaf Cakeby the Pallotti House Chef

In this issue I am happy to offer youa resurrected family favorite. Everyso often someone in the family willask, “Why don’t we make an appleloaf? I have a taste for it!” And thenthe fun begins - where did I put thatrecipe. Everyone in my family says theyhave the recipe (somewhere), but ev-ery time they want to make it, theyjust can’t seem to find it. Well, enough is enough! I decidedto get out my detective kit and go onthe hunt to track it down and publishit here in the hope that it won’t getlost or misplaced again. Happily my quest ended with myniece, Vicki, who very calmly saidthat she made it all the time and whowas able to provide me with a copyof the elusive loaf. So, without further ado, I presentthe family Apple Loaf Cake recipe foryour baking pleasure and eating en-joyment.

What You’ll Need:

1 cup vegetable oil2 cups sugar4 eggs3 cups flour1 tsp. baking soda1 tsp. cinnamon½ tsp. salt1 tsp. vanilla3 cups peeled, diced tart apples

Here’s What You Do:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.

Grease and flour two large loaf pans.

Mix oil, sugar, eggs and vanilla well.Add dry ingredients and mix well.Fold apples into mix.

Place equal amounts of mix in eachloaf pan.

Mix two tablespoons of sugar and oneteaspoon of cinnamon together andsprinkle generously over the top ofboth loaves before baking.

Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes at 325degrees F.

Makes two large loafs (which can befrozen.)Enjoy!

sat), and this body proposed the forma-tion of an ad hoc group to determine theissue. The ad hoc committee never gotoff the ground, and the Pallottines re-ceived no direct answer in their appealfor help. By June 1968, Liebl explainedthe state of affairs to the province: “TheDiocese of Madison felt that it cannothelp us financially at this time. We stillwill try to obtain financial help fromother sources, though there is not toomuch hope.” He concluded: “In generalthe conclusion has been that we willcontinue to subsidize the operation therewith the hope that the enrollment willincrease and that eventually the diocesewill see fit to help us.” In meetings with

the faculty and staff, the future of theinstitution was candidly discussed and thedoor was opened for additional innova-tions that might assist the flagging institu-tion. Clearly, the evolution to a full-scalehigh school was already in the offing as yetanother revision of the religious programof all the students as well as a redrawing ofthe disciplinary norms was ordered byLiebl. By the fall of 1969, the numbers ofstudents began to creep up, registering onehundred thirteen, a total which includedtwenty-four resident students. O’Donnellgraciously gave the seminary $5.000, andJoseph Zimmer took his place on the Dioc-esan Education Committee to press Pallot-tine interests when strategic openings oc-curred.
