Cover picture: Great Get Together

Haringey’s residents are what make our borough the best in London, and your aspirations are at the very heart of our ambitions. We’re clear that regeneration must never be about just bricks and mortar – done right, it has the potential to transform lives.

By creating the better homes; greater job opportunities; access to skills and training, and excellent local facilities that you’ve made it clear you want to see, we’re confident that

we can further improve our borough for everyone who lives and works here.

Haringey is not immune to London’s housing crisis – more than 3,000 local households live in temporary accommodation in the borough and too many of you live in homes that don’t meet the standards you deserve.

But we can’t solve these challenges on our own. Limits on the amount we can borrow to fund development, together with the scale of new homes needed in Haringey, mean we have to find another way of delivering the homes and jobs our borough needs.

That’s why we’ve launched the Haringey Development Vehicle – an innovative 50:50 partnership with developers Lendlease that will see council land and developer cash and expertise brought together to deliver huge investment to our borough.

Together, we will be able to bring 6,400 new homes and thousands of new jobs, alongside investment in a raft of measures to improve your neighbourhoods – including a new school; new health centre; new shops and leisure facilities, and improved public spaces.

We’re clear that the HDV will deliver so much more than building works, which is why it will see £8million reinvested in social and economic support programmes such as skills training, and a £20million social fund to drive longer-term improvements to people’s health and local environment.

We committed to championing our borough’s great diversity and community spirit, and that’s why each one of Haringey’s existing council tenants will be guaranteed a right to return to their estate following redevelopment if that’s what they want.

We’re determined that this new partnership will secure the stability, expertise and investment needed to bring change, improvement and opportunity to Haringey to the benefit of everyone who has made the borough their home.

Claire Kober Leader of Haringey Council

Thousands of new homes and jobs, alongside improved neighbourhoods, community facilities and the best opportunities for local residents, will be delivered under a pioneering new approach to regeneration.

The Haringey Development Vehicle (HDV) sees the council team up with leading developers Lendlease in a 50:50 partnership that will see council-owned land and developer investment brought together to transform the borough.

The partnership will enable the council to keep control over key decisions that could affect residents, while council profits from new developments will be ploughed back into local services and further regeneration.

Highlights of the agreement include: • New and improved homes for existing council tenants, with a

guaranteed right to return on equivalent terms • 6,400 new homes, with at least 40 percent affordable • Thousands of new jobs in a range of industries • New school facilities for Haringey children

• A new health centre • A transformed town centre in Wood Green • Investment in skills, training and community support • A £20m social investment programme to improve local

residents’ prospects, health and environment

In addition, a “construction framework” similar to the landmark deal struck on Stratford’s Olympic Park will guarantee opportunities such as new jobs and an obligation to pay the London Living Wage, alongside apprenticeship opportunities and sustainable supply chains.

Full information about the development partnership can be found at www.haringey.gov.uk/hdv

Cashless parking Pay and display parking machines are set to be phased out in Haringey this autumn in favour of “cashless parking” options such as paying over the phone, by text or through smartphone apps.

Cashless parking, which is already widely available at car parks and street parking bays across the borough, allows drivers to pay to park without coins and without the need to display a ticket. Parking duration can also be extended without the need to return to the car.

The move to borough-wide cashless parking also comes as many of Haringey’s pay and display machines are old, damaged and in need of expensive repairs and maintenance, while updating machines to incorporate new £1 coins and reject existing ones when they cease to be legal tender in October could cost local council taxpayers up to £100,000.

Cashless parking locations in Haringey use the PaybyPhone smartphone app and website, which allows drivers to set up accounts to pay for parking on-the-go using stored bank details and parking bay location codes.

Further information on cashless parking and setting up a PaybyPhone account can be found at www.paybyphone.co.uk or at www.haringey.gov.uk/parking

Outstanding Willow wows inspectorsThe Willow Primary School, whose philosophy is to “never give up on any child”, has earned an “outstanding” rating from education watchdog Ofsted.

Ofsted inspectors who visited the school in Adams Road, Tottenham, found a raft of things to be proud of, from ambitious staff and exceptional teaching to impeccable pupil behaviour.

They were also impressed with how vulnerable children thrive at the Willow; how pupils share their experiences with one another; how the governing body supports and challenges the school; how broad, balanced and exciting the curriculum is, and how popular extra-curricular activities are.

Headteacher Dawn Ferdinand said: "We are thrilled to be rated outstanding by Ofsted, and delighted that the inspectors understood the school’s philosophy and the positive difference it makes to the lives of our children.

“Teachers, staff, governors and pupils all work together to make the Willow a wonderful place to come to school and a great place to work. Thanks to all of my staff for their continued hard work, and to our school community who we’re so proud to support.”

99% of Haringey schools are now rated good or outstanding by Ofsted.

Mind in Haringey provides information, advice and support to people affected by mental health; works to prevent mental health and promote mental wellbeing, and aims to ensure people with mental health problems are respected and included in the local community.

Studio 306 are a group of arts and crafts practitioners who design high quality ceramics, jewellery, textiles and screen printed products and work to empower disadvantaged local people through offering a safe creative space for those recovering from mental illness.

Cllr Mann said: “The value of the work that Mind in Haringey do to support local people with mental health concerns cannot be underestimated. They really do offer a lifeline to many.

“When I visited Studio 306 I was knocked back by the talent and by their commitment to using the arts to offer support and comfort to people with mental health. I’m proud to offer my support to both organisations.”

Backing local businessLocal companies that help to keep Haringey’s economy strong will be given support to survive the government’s hike in business rates.

Under the council's Revaluation Support scheme, most Haringey businesses that have seen an increase of £500 or more will automatically be given a 42 percent discount on the increase in their 2017/18 business rates and an anticipated 31 percent discount in 2018/19.

Around 1,300 local businesses are in line for support, which will be automatically given, but companies that are multinational and national

chains will not be eligible for the additional support.

The scheme was introduced following consultation with local businesses and the Haringey Traders’ Forum.

Business rates revaluation support comes in addition to measures already in place to back local businesses in Haringey, including charitable relief for voluntary and community groups and discounts for businesses occupying new office, workspace and creative studios.

Queen’s Award for Tottenham charity The much-loved Living Under One Sun (LUOS) charity has received a prestigious Queen’s Award – the “MBE for voluntary groups” – in recognition of its work in the borough.

LUOS is committed to reducing social isolation, sharing skills and improving neighbourhood spaces. Its work in the last decade has included setting up an award-winning allotment for organic food growing and social activities.

The charity has launched a Crowdfunding appeal to support its new Tottenham Cafe Connect, which will boast a community cafe; greenhouse; performance space; pop-up community marketplace; volunteering opportunities, and arts and crafts.

For further information, visit www.spacehive.com/cafe-connect

Sexual health support at the click of a button Sexual health services are available online and in local pharmacies under changes to further improve quality and offer more convenient, easier to use services.

Information, advice, testing and treatment for a range of conditions will be available online 24 hours a day, alongside a host of services at clinics, pharmacies and GP practices.

Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) will offer services for Haringey residents. For young people aged under-25, contraception and STI screening will be available at community clinics in the borough.

For over-25s, state-of-the art facilities for sexual health testing and treatment will be available at the highly rated Archway Clinic and Mortimer Market Centre in Islington and Camden, or at North Middlesex Hospital.

A team of 32 Haringey pharmacies will bolster local services by supplying free condoms, emergency contraception, STI testing and, in some locations, instant HIV testing. OBE for outstanding headteacher The headteacher of Haringey's outstanding Brook Special Primary School, Margaret Sumner, was awarded an OBE in The Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Ms Sumner, who has been at the helm of the school since it opened in 2011, received the accolade for services to special educational needs and disabilities.

She has spent more than 20 years championing a “Campus for All” on Broadwater Farm, moving towards more and more inclusion for children with special needs and disabilities.

The vision for a Campus for All eventually became the Broadwaters Inclusive Learning Campus, with Haringey Sixth Form Centre, Riverside Special Secondary School and Broadwaters – which brings together the Brook Special Primary, the Willow mainstream primary and Broadwaters Children's Centre.

Ms Sumner, who retired at the end of the summer term, said she was “delighted” to accept the OBE.

Chair of Governors Marilyn Francis said: “Margaret's contribution to this community is signif icantly important; her OBE is an amazing testament to all her outstanding work. This recognition is a wonderful reward to the close of a long and exciting career in special education.”

The news tops a great year for education in Haringey, with 99% of all schools in the borough now rated good or outstanding by Ofsted.

To Do1 Priory Park

Priory Park is a multiple Green Flag Award winner and has been a favourite local destination for more than a century. The park offers a popular café and paddling pool opened as part of the 1951 Festival of Britain. There is also a children's playground, table tennis tables and tennis courts that have weekly “Tennis for Free” coach-led sessions available for all age groups and abilities.

The park is well known for a stone fountain that was installed in 1909 having originally stood in the churchyard of St Paul's Cathedral. It is made from 50 tons of Lamorna granite. Currently used as a large planter, there are plans to restore it as a working fountain.

For more than 20 years the park has hosted thousands of visitors for the annual North London YMCA 10k with a children's 1k fun run and music festival. There are regular events at the cafe or in the Pavilion, which is available for hire.

2 Church Tower and gardens

Well worth a visit is the Grade II* listed 15th Century St Mary’s Church Tower, the area’s oldest building, and its ancient churchyard; part of the original medieval village. Next to the Tower is the beautiful Garden of Remembrance commemorating Hornsey residents who gave their lives in the Second World War. The Church Tower and Gardens are well served by Islands in Hornsey, a refreshing relaxing café next door on the High Street, which serves great coffee and unique cakes.

Friends of Hornsey Church Tower have worked tirelessly since 1989 to raise funds for the restoration of the Tower, and to help look after the churchyard, which has held the Green Community Flag Award since 2010. There are regular gardening mornings to which all are welcome, as well as The Tower Singers, a new community based choir for all ages, which meets on Thursdays. The next chance to explore the Tower, climb to the roof and see stunning views, is 2-5pm on September 17, a London Open House event.

Chestnuts Park played host to an afternoon of heart-pumping, sweat-inducing, fitness activities as part of the One You Health Awareness Day.The event was a chance to raise awareness of health and wellbeing service One You Haringey, which helps local people to make healthier lifestyle choices.

One You Haringey provides advice and support for weight management, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption and living an active lifestyle. Residents were introduced to a range of free health services available in the borough and invited to sign up to the One You service.

Throughout the day, members of the public were able to learn about health and fitness and take part in a number of activities including football training, a tennis taster session and a boot camp-style exercise class.

The community event last month also boasted stalls from many local services such as Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, Haringey Walks, Haringey Recovery, stART Haringey, Haringey Advice & Shine Haringey.

Sabrina Kerr, Health & Wellbeing Manager at Reed Momenta, which delivers One You, said: “It was nice to see so many residents taking the first step to making a change by getting involved with the activities available on the day, and speaking with the One You team about making small but significant changes to their lifestyle.

Dog Fouling

Paul and Louise Bullen

Junaid Junel

Eloise Charnock

Dog owners told to clean up their actChildren from Lordship Lane primary school have been showing off their environmental credentials by designing posters encouraging people to pick up their dog mess.Three designs were chosen to be displayed on lampposts across the borough, warning people they face an £80 fine if they don't “scoop up the poop”, and the winners were awarded with their prizes at a special presentation held at the school.

Earlier this year, six-year-old Eloise Charnock wrote to the council after walking home from school one day and seeing the pavements and walkways littered with dog mess. Eloise complained about it to her mother, who suggested she write to the council. With a little help from mum Michelle, Eloise wrote and sent off her letter of complaint.

After receiving Eloise’s letter, Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Peray Ahmet and Woodside Ward Cllr Ann Waters visited the school and set the children a competition to design posters to encourage others to clean up after their dogs. The children donned their artistic caps and got to work creating some wonderful designs.

Junaid Junel aged 11, Paul and Louise Bullen, aged 10 and 6, were all delighted to win. Junaid said: “I’ve seen the posters outside and I feel like I’ve achieved something.” Paul said: “I’m so very excited. There were so many good posters and I was very surprised I won.”

Eloise's mom, Michelle Rees-Jones, said: “It’s really important for young people to be engaged in the political process. If one child gets involved, then others will too. When Eloise saw the posters up she was so pleased and so proud even though they weren’t hers. I’m very proud of her.”

All three winners received a framed picture of their poster, a waterproof lamppost version and a WHSmith voucher.

Look out for all three winning designs on lampposts at various locations across Haringey.

Hundreds of Haringey residents came together this summer to celebrate community spirit with the Great Get Together. Set up in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox, the nationwide event in June was a celebration of Britain’s diversity, underpinned by Jo’s belief that we have more in common than that which divides us.

The borough’s residents embraced the spirit of the special weekend,

with 19 events organised on streets and in parks across Haringey.

Activities ranged from African drumming sessions to street parties, with tugs of war, play streets games, picnics, live music performances, dancing and a lot of fun.

EarlyBird for Autism: a Parent’s View The EarlyBird parent programme offers dedicated early support to the parents and carers of young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), stepping in to help before children are five years old. The 12-week programme, originally set up by the UK National Autistic Society 20 years ago and launched in Haringey in 2001, combines group training sessions, individual home visits, and video feedback. Parents and carers are provided with knowledge and skills to support their young child’s education and development, as well as understand and develop their child’s communication and social interaction abilities.

Haringey mum Stella Sutherland received an ASD diagnosis for her daughter Shyla-Ryanne when she was just two years old. After hearing positive feedback about EarlyBird from other parents, she decided to give it a try.

For Shyla-Ryanne, now aged six, tantrums were common when she couldn’t express her needs, but Stella soon picked up lessons she could take home from the EarlyBird to help in such situations. Visual aids like PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) proved a big success.

“With PECS, Shyla-Ryanne was able to make choices for herself,” says Stella. “I was able to understand what she wanted, and she stopped having meltdowns.”

For the parent of a child with special needs, this milestone was a huge achievement. “EarlyBird boosted my confidence

as I feel I understand now how autism affects Shyla-Ryanne and how to support her needs better,” Stella adds.

After learning so much from EarlyBird, Stella was inspired to create her own support group, ABC Autism BAME Community.

Letecia Knight, a specialist autism support worker with Haringey Council’s Language & Autism Team, carries out home visits for the EarlyBird programme. “Home visits provide trainers with the honour of being welcomed into the homes of our families,” she says. “These visits are invaluable as we can speak to parents in their own comfort zone and observe the child in their home environment.”

Since 2001, more than170 Haringey families have accessed the EarlyBird parent programme. Several of these families are also included in the National EarlyBird video for future families and professionals in the UK and abroad.

BRIDGES TO BIRKBECK

YOUR JOURNEY TO UNIVERSITY STARTS HERE

Q&A Kerry Harman, Programme Director for Higher Education Introductory Studies at Birkbeck

What is the Higher Education Introductory Studies (HEIS) Programme? This programme provides a supported pathway into Higher Education for students without formal qualifications. From October we will be delivering the Social Sciences pathway of study on HEIS at 639 Enterprise Centre in Tottenham.

Who’s it for?The programme is for people who don’t have formal qualifications or who have been away from education for a long time and feel they would benefit from a more supported pathway of study into higher education. A lot of people think they need A-levels to be successful at university, but this is not necessarily the case.

We do a lot of work in the programme on study skills and developing the skills to be able to be successful in ongoing degree study such as: thinking critically about topics; electronic research skills; writing essays; reading and responding to academic literature; time management and so on. People who are thinking of applying also need to be interested in what’s going on in the world around them.

Why should people take this course?A good reason for starting is to see if you enjoy university study. After successfully completing the programme people will graduate with a Certificate in Higher Education, which is a nationally recognised level 4 university qualification. This will enable you to apply to Social Science related degrees at universities across the UK. It will also provide a progression

pathway into Year 2, part-time of the BSc Social Sciences degree at Birkbeck. The progression arrangement means that students will have completed the first year of their four year, part-time degree at Birkbeck. There is also a very generous bursary provided by Haringey Council to low income students. This can make a big difference to making degree study more affordable. I think all people who think they might benefit from studying at university should have the opportunity to attend and it’s never too late to start.

When/where?Study will be two evenings per week, 6–9pm, from October to June. The course runs at the 639 Enterprise Centre, 639 High Road, Tottenham.

What have you enjoyed most about teaching this course in a community setting?I taught the Approaches to Study module on the programme at Tottenham last year. There was an energy in the class, which from a teaching perspective, was very stimulating. What I enjoyed most was the diverse experience that people bought with them to the programme and how we were able to use that to explore questions around equalities, diversities and relations of power. The course is intense but all the students completing this year have said how much they have enjoyed the programme. They are looking forward to continuing their study at Birkbeck in the upcoming year on various degree programmes.

Fees and financial supportThe cost of the course is £6000, and there are 15 bursaries of £1500 made available by Haringey to help towards the cost of fees. These will be given out on a first-come first-served basis once students have been fully accepted onto the programme. Students will also be able to apply for Birkbeck’s means-tested bursary of £800.

A bustling yard with lunchtime markets, entertainment and creative entrepreneurs selling their work to the public is turning heads in Wood Green.Blue House Yard, which launched in June, is surrounded by colourful two-storey wooden sheds and an eye-catching bright blue house packed full of tenants showing off their work.

The tenants include a regular street food market; musicians; an art curator; ceramicist; PR firm for electronic music DJs; makers of luxury lingerie for fuller bust sizes; a tailor; satchel maker; wood craftsman; stationery maker; artist; vintage clothes firm; kilt manufacturer, and a production company focusing on women’s empowerment.

A double-decker bus is also being transformed into a landmark café at the Yard.

Singer Eden, from Wood Green, is based at Blue House Yard with partner Noelle.

He said: “Blue House Yard has given us an opportunity to develop our career but also to integrate with the community, which we love so much. Wood Green is a cultural melting pot and Blue House Yard exemplifies what can happen when culture and art come together.”

Take a look at some of the fantastic pictures from opening night.

Blue House Yard is at 5 River Park Rd, N22 7TB. The lunch time food market is held on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. There are occasional evening events too. For more information visit: www.bluehouseyard.com

At just 23 years old, architect Alice Hardy was at the helm of the Blue House Yard project. Not only very young for such a big job, it is also incredibly rare to have a female site foreman.

A recent graduate, the sheds around the Yard were Alice’s first big build – and she loves the way they’ve turned out.

She says: “Everyone seems to like the sheds. It’s nice because all the other buildings in the area are one colour, but Blue House Yard is an explosion of colour. It’s a unique space. It’s a really nice place for people to congregate.”

Alice had a small team, which included college student volunteers. It was a self-build project for the architects, which meant the team were able to make design changes as they went along.

She says: “You spend your day running around doing orders, then the rest of the day building it. You wouldn’t normally do it like that. It’s cut costs and we’ve been able to design as we went along.”

Alice has enjoyed the freedom that has given her – and the fact that Blue House Yard is a temporary site. She laughs: “People are more willing to take risks when it’s temporary – otherwise they probably wouldn’t have let us paint this building blue!”

Alice has been studying architecture at The Bartlett at UCL. She will continue her studies at the London School of Architecture. The lead architect for this project was Gabriel Warshafsky at Jan Kattein architects. Operational design was led by Meanwhile Space.

Sailing

Oh buoy! Haringey students on the crest of a wave From dry land to sailing the open seas, a crew of Haringey students have become the unlikely success story of the UK’s young sailing scene. During the last three years, sailing has become a central part of outdoor education for Hornsey’s Greig City Academy – with youngsters first taking to the water at local reservoirs before heading to Royal Yacht association (RYA) dinghy sailing centres on the South Coast, and now earning unprecedented success in national competitions.

At the heart of the school’s achievements is a team of 12 students who have worked tirelessly to achieve their ambitions. After gaining RYA levels 1 and 2, they decided to go a step further and set about fundraising to buy and restore a yacht.

The school acquired Scaramouche, a 45-foot German Friers ex-Admiral’s Cup boat, in 2015. After two years of work, she was the only UK school boat – and first ever state school yacht – to enter the international Fastnet

Campaign, a five day/four night yacht race from Cowes.

The students at the helm have competed in several races and all completed sea survival, ocean safety and first aid courses, with five of them also earning RYA day skipper qualifications.

Jon Holt, Greig City Academy's Director of Sixth Form and Outdoor Education Programme, said: “They love racing and it’s amazing they have done so well.

“The GB coach commented that part of their success is their hunger – they are always first to the marina to set up and always the last in, taking every chance to sail as much as possible.”

Legendary British sailor Sir Robin Knox Johnston told Scuttlebutt sailing website after meeting the Greig squad: “I had a lovely day with these

enthusiastic young people. who have worked hard to raise the money for their boat, get qualified, re-fit the boat, and are doing all the races to qualify for the Fastnet.

“They are determined to make a race of the Fastnet. No silver spoon for them. They have worked and fundraised for this opportunity. More youngsters like this and we don’t have to worry about the future of our sport.”

Some of the squad are now in training for positions on professional race yachts or jobs in the sailing industry, and they work alongside local primary schools to introduce younger children to the excitement of life on the water.

Changes to your green garden waste service

for London

Working in partnership

As the council works towards saving £20million, there will be some changes to your green garden waste service. By handling waste differently we will be able to make vital savings while still providing a good service. This means more of our remaining resources can go into other essential areas such as adult social care, libraries and children’s services.

Opt-in chargeable serviceA new green garden waste service launches from October 23rd 2017. Rather than withdrawing collections, we are following the example of many other local authorities by offering the service for a charge. For £75 a year – that’s £1.45 a week – you will get your own wheeled bin for garden waste, with weekly collections.

Start from October 23rd and for the price of 12 months, you will get your new service until April 2019. Current hessian sack collections will cease from October 23rd. If you do not sign up to the new service by this date, your garden waste collection will stop. If you choose to sign up later, you will be provided with a new garden waste bin and your service will begin.

This is an opt-in service, and we are encouraging you to sign up early, so there is no delay in us getting your new garden waste bin to you.

Sign up Tell Veolia you want to sign up now by emailing [email protected] or calling 0208 885 7700. From October 23rd you can also sign up online. Bins will be 240litre (the same size as normal household waste bins), but if you think your garden is too small for a standard size bin, we can offer other options. Make sure you sign up before April 2018 to get your full year. Find out more at www.veolia.co.uk/haringey

Football

Kicking up a storm!Lifting the trophy to delighted cheers, Haringey Borough Women celebrated winning the double last season, champions of the football league and cup.

Their incredible success followed a couple of tough years, often turning out with nine or 10 players, taking turns as coach and even pitching in to drive the team minibus.

Ex-player Karla Parker, who is team secretary, says: “I needed acupuncture every time I played because I had a bad back. But I couldn’t watch 10 players go out there!”

But two seasons ago everything changed thanks to Steve Browne, the top notch football coach who gave his time for free. Dedicated Steve worked tirelessly with the women and was an incredible support. So when he passed away in January after battling cancer for the second time, the team were heartbroken.

Karla says: “It was really, really difficult. He had supported so many of the players. We made a pact to continue to achieve what he wanted us to do. Steve wanted us to gain promotion. ‘Fail to prepare, prepare to fail’ – that was Steve’s mantra.”

They won the double. Karla says: “Steve would’ve said ‘you should have won the treble’! The girls put their all in, it was really

emotional and they really deserved it. We had a secret weapon – our passion to succeed for Steve.”

Steve, who ran a girls’ team at the S&T Academy he set up with Crystal Palace footballer Andros Townsend’s dad Troy, used his talent and passion to help Haringey’s young women.

Karla says: “He had a knack of getting girls to stick with football. He would stop players he saw and ask them where they played. A lot of them were really talented but from a deprived background. He used our team as an outlet to bring his girls through to adult level – a lot of his players have gone on to get scholarships in America.”

And now, as the team prepare for the new season under new manager Ben Morris, they want this work to continue. Karla says: “We want to be about giving girls access to football. We want to help quality local footballers who could be on the path to the wrong way, but now they can stay in football and have something positive.”

Haringey Borough Women’s Football Club play in the FA Women’s Premier League South East Division 1. Watch for free at their home ground Coles Park on White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoons. The season starts at the end of August and you can find the fixtures on the FA website or the club site: www.haringeywfc.com. Any women aged over 17 interested in playing can contact the team via the website.

Tottenham Charter

28

A commitment to communities Work experience, community schemes and skills training are on the cards for local residents under the innovative new Tottenham Charter.

The Charter sees Haringey Council and local partners such as charities, businesses and housing developers teaming up to make a series of commitments to ensure residents can make the most of the benefits of regeneration – from jobs, and training to healthy improvements.

The Tottenham Charter goes hand-in-hand with ambitious regeneration plans, which will see thousands of new jobs, homes and facilities delivered during the coming years.

Pledges already made include:

• Volker Fitzpatrick: A STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) engagement programme with local schools, including work experience placements

• Redemption Brewery Co.: work experience opportunities

• Lee Valley Estates: schools engagement and measures to help young people classed as NEET (not in employment, education or training) on the Hale Village development

• Grainger: a programme of activities with Gladesmore School

• Arup: building links with Northumberland Park School

• The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation: work with the local community to tackle key social issues including health and wellbeing, education and training

The council is working with other businesses to secure further pledges.

Jonathan Kiddle, Senior Development Manager at Grainger, said: “Grainger is delighted to be one of the first companies to sign up to the Tottenham Charter, an excellent initiative that we are very pleased to support.

“We are very much looking forward to forming a long lasting partnership with Gladesmore Community School and will assist them as they continue to provide an outstanding all round education to current and future pupils.”

Samantha Rigby, Director of Redemption Brewing Co said: “We are keen to be involved in the Tottenham Charter because we care deeply about our local community. We’ve been brewing in Northumberland Park since 2009 and are keen to help nurture young, talented local people in any way we can.”

Wish you were beer?

Brewery trail

Hop along to the Tottenham Beer Trail and enjoy our six-pack.

The recent explosion of breweries in Tottenham has resulted in the six current beer houses joining forces for a ‘Tottenham Beer Trail’.

Featuring such famed breweries as Beavertown and Redemption, the trail will link the various beer plants and give thirsty visitors the chance to sample beverages just yards from where their drinks are actually brewed.

Opening their tap rooms on Saturdays, the super six are linked by the hashtag #Tottenhambeertrail and are keen to celebrate the area’s fame as the new centre for craft beer lovers.

“It will be a great Saturday day out and it’s so good to see this happening in Tottenham,” said Simon McCabe, director of brewing at One Mile End Brewery who is overseeing the trail. “It’s also a chance for small breweries like us to welcome people into our brewery, get to meet fellow beer lovers, and spread the word about what we’re doing here.

I see this area as a sleeping giant which is just waiting for something like this to happen.”

A good place to begin the trail would be at One Mile End Brewery on the Compass West Estate, off West Road, just a two-minute stroll from the craft brewery that started the scene a few years back, Redemption.

Once you’ve lingered over a pint of Hopspur, you could enjoy a pleasant walk through Tottenham Marshes and along the canal before popping into one of London’s newest breweries, Brewheadz in the Rosebery Industrial Park.

Their punchy pale ale, Electro Beat, would go down a treat on a warm day before you head back to the marshes and continue to Tottenham Hale, where the delights of Beavertown and Pressure Drop await you on the Lockwood Industrial Park.

Fortunately, the final stop is only five minutes around the corner at Affinity, the house brewers for newly-opened Five Miles bar and club, where you can carry on enjoying the hoppy treats until the early hours.

“I think the idea of the trail is fantastic,” said Steve Grae, co-founder of Affinity. “And I like this kind of anti-loyalty situation where we are actually encouraging people to try the other breweries. It’s great to be a part of a community such as this.”

History

Marvellous Myddleton: celebrating one of Haringey’s most historic high streetsIn Victorian times, Myddleton Road – tucked away behind Bowes Park Station – was a bustling terrace of shops, restaurants and homes.

Thanks to the fantastic efforts of new independent traders and a strong sense of community spirit, the area is enjoying a renaissance as one of Haringey’s best-loved destinations, drawing visitors from across the borough and beyond.

Local traders – such as independent bar the Step, Greek grocery Hellenic Gourmet and Italian deli La Coppia – have taken care to preserve the street’s character while making improvements, and the Myddleton Road Community gardens are a haven of calm at the centre of the area.

Now a local artist has captured Myddleton’s special heritage through two beautiful 7.3 metre-long panorama artworks – using traditional techniques to capture the street for future generations.

Gabriela Schutz’s ‘A Walk in Myddleton Road’ – on display at Bruce Castle Museum until late October – is an installation of two drawing panoramas that record Myddleton Road and a third drawing of the New River, which flows openly near the street.

The panoramic format was popular in the 19th century, when people would go to see huge immersive panoramas of

landscapes and historical events in a kind of early version of 3D cinema.

Gabriela said: “The panoramas of Myddleton Road represent many walks in the road. Hopefully they will serve as an historical document of the street as it was in 2016/17.

“Drawing the street, rather than viewing via Google Earth or Streetview, is about slowing down and looking properly at things – and that is true for myself, the artist, and for the viewer.

“These days we spend so much time on our phones, exchanging information and communicating with distant people – yet at the same time being by ourselves. It is the personal and physical connection with a place which is the heart of this project. It is about being part of a local community and engaging with reality.

“Drawing is a way of observing the world and being totally present. I have been intrigued by the changing architectural styles along the street, by the shop fronts representing different periods of time, diverse cultures and distinct aesthetic tastes.”

Cornelius and Friends - Exploring the art and friendship of five artistsUntil September 24 This exhibition reunites for the first time paintings by Cornelius McCarthy (Arts Officer for Haringey Council between 1971-1988), alongside work of four other Haringey artists, whom he counted as good and long-term friends: Colin Ward, Violet Fuller, John Godden and Beatrice Camm. Enjoy and explore their friendships through their paintings.

A Walk in Myddleton Road: an exhibition by Gabriela SchutzUntil October 29 A beautiful installation of two pencil drawing panoramas by local artist Gabriela Schutz. The panoramas are an intimate and monumental record of Myddleton Road in 2017 - a vibrant and diverse Victorian commercial street in Bounds Green, that is currently going through regeneration. The exhibition also includes a smaller panorama of the New River in Bowes Park.
