LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of eternal life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

THE FIRST READING:

READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Zephaniah Chapter 1 beginning at the 7th verse

Be silent before the Lord GOD! For the day of the LORD is at hand; the LORD has prepared a sacrifice and consecrated his guests. At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are thickening upon their lees, those who say in their hearts, `The LORD will not do good, nor will he do ill.' Their goods shall be plundered, and their houses laid waste. Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink wine from them." The great day of the LORD is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the LORD is bitter, the mighty man cries aloud there. A day of wrath is that day, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements. I will bring distress on men, so that they shall walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD; their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung. Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them on the day of the wrath of the LORD. In the fire of his jealous wrath, all the earth shall be consumed; for a full, yea, sudden end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.

PSALM 90: 1-8, 12 Qui habitat

1.Lord, you have been our refuge* from one generation to another.

2.Before the mountains were brought forth, or the land and the earth were born, * from age to age you are God.

3 . You turn us back to the dust and say, * "Go back, 0 child of' earth."

4.For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past* and like a watch in the night.

S.You sweep us away like a dream; * we fade away suddenly like the grass.

6.In the morning it is green and flourishes;* in the evening it is dried up and withered.

7.For we consume away in your displeasure; * we are afraid because of your wrathful indignation.

8.Our iniquities you have set before you, * and our secret sins in the light of your countenance.

12. So teach us to number our days* that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the First Letter to the Thessalonians Chapter 5 beginning at the 1st verse

As to the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When people say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them as travail comes upon a woman with child, and there will be no escape. But you are not in darkness, brethren, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all sons of light and sons of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But, since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we wake or sleep we might live with him. Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time Jesus said, "For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, `Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, `Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' His master said to him, `Well done, good

!5

Page 6: Pentecost 23 [2014]

and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, `Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master answered him, `You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord.

FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK

Greetings:

There is much excitement in our parish today as twenty three members of our church who have been duly baptised come to receive the Laying-on of Hands in Holy Confirmation.

Arrangements have to be made for one person who has to travel on work related business today, to be confirmed at a later date.

If we were to place the sacraments of Christian initiation in a numbered order, Holy Conformation would be seen as the second in a trio of rites that form part of the process.

In this Sacrament, as Professor Maxwell Johnson tells us, persons receive the ‘seal of the Spirit’ completing baptism and connected to a hand-laying prayer for the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, and an anointing with chrism.

!6

Page 7: Pentecost 23 [2014]

This sacramental rite is presided over by the Bishop and leads to fullness of Christian initiation signified by participation for the first time in the Eucharist.

There was indeed a time when these rites were done within the context of a single service: Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. It was when infant baptism became a norm for the church that an interval was placed between baptism and confirmation.

This is a good point to remind parents that baptism is the first part of this trio or that comprises Christian Initiation and that they ought to ensure that the little ones remain part of the flock and receive the teaching of the church which leads to the rites that we celebrate today.

We have to be able to make the vital links between these initiatory rites for our spiritual growth, as they lead to other sacraments, penance, ordination, matrimony and unction.

There is more, for living out a sacramental life will impact on home and family life, and our lives in the community as well. Our census figures would be so different if persons were to remain faithful to the vows that were made at Bapt ism and renewed at Confirmation.

One of the characteristics we have to work at is remaining faithful when we have made vows in the presence of God almighty. God gives us the grace to live out those vows day by day.

What will be important for those being Confirmed is to ensure that they remain faithful to our Lord in the blessed sacrament and that they make their communion week by week for the rest of their lives.

!7

Page 8: Pentecost 23 [2014]

We pray for those being Confirmed in today using the words that will be said by the Archbishop in the Confirmation Mass, that they may continue God’s forever and, daily increase in His Holy Spirit more and more, until they come to God’s everlasting kingdom. . Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke, MA,(The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER

Recently, there has been a great deal of talk in the media about the PSA blood test and early detection of prostate cancer. This week we will take a look at this test.

P r o s t a t e - s p e c i f i c a n t i g e n ( P S A ) i s a  protein  produced by prostate  cells. It is mostly found in semen but a small amount is present in the blood. Measuring the PSA level can increase the chance of finding prostate cancer at an early stage. A high PSA level has been linked to an increased chance of having prostate cancer. However other conditions can cause elevated PSA levels as well. If the result of the test is abnormal, a  prostate biopsy  is needed to determine if you have cancer.  A PSA test does not diagnose cancer, but it can be used along with other tests to determine if cancer is present.

Most healthy men have levels under 4 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) of blood. When prostate cancer is present, the PSA level usually goes above 4ng/ml.

According to the Nation Newspaper, last week the CEO of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital made the announcement that this test will be available for nationals and non-nationals at $35 and $45.50 respectively. The results will be available in 48 hours and should be taken to the referring doctor for interpretation. Men, please take advantage of this offer, it may save your life! Early detection is your best protection!
