Festival

Pennington Drama has once again been chosen to perform at the edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest performing arts festival in the world. They will go to scotland in August 2012. The school’s thespians first ap-peared at the American High school Theatre Festival division of the Fringe in 2007. in addition to having to raise money for their fares, as Director of Drama Lisa Houston summed it up, they have to “pack up one of our shows— actors, costumes, props, set pieces, sound effects, lighting designs, programs, posters—and transport it overseas to scotland.”

being selected for the festival once, let alone twice, is a signal honor, and this enthusiastic troupe plans to make the most of it.

Sixteenth Annual Golf Classic Raises Over $35,000The sixteenth Annual golf classic was played at the bedens brook club on Monday, June 13, 2011. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. not only was the weather perfect but the entire golf classic from start to finish was ideal. it was a special pleasure to have so many students, current and past parents, grandparents, and friends of Penning-ton join us this year. John tydings P’09 ’12, steve Kerner, richard simkus P’14, and reese Verschelde took this year’s trophy for the top flight of golfers.

The school thanks Long Motor company and the entire Long family, Dave and Lynne, Dave ’86 and Jane, Jeff ’88 and Joanna, chris ’91 and Merrill P’12’17, and nick ’00 for supporting us as our tournament sponsor. With their help, and the help of our many other sponsors, players, and volunteers, we were able to raise over $35,000 for the Jerry eure, sr., endowment Fund. The Fund assists students on financial aid with some of the incidental costs as-sociated with attending an independent school.

Thank you to all of our sponsors and volunteers.

Welcome note

From the Head of SchoolFor more than 100 years, Pennington has attracted many international students, drawn here by our wide network of graduates and friends, includ-ing Methodist missionaries in all parts of the world. Dozens of south Americans, Asians, and europeans had their first introduction to America as students at this school before going on to university education in the United states.

From this beginning, Pennington has built on its strength as a place where students from many countries have gathered and found a welcome. They have enriched the lives of our school community, introducing us to different cultures and ways of looking at the world.

today this openness is more important than ever. our students will spend a lifetime con-necting ever more closely with people from different countries, cultures, and outlooks. This reality calls for renewed commitment from us to prepare our students to embrace new per-spectives.

At Pennington we relish this challenge. We have a great place to start – in our already cosmopol-itan community of families. Last spring, we had a chance to bring the Pennington community to Korea and china. Accompanied by Associ-ate Head of school Dr. bill Hawkey, i met with families in these countries, who came together to talk about the school, their children’s experi-ences here, and how they could play a greater role in the community, even at a distance of thousands of miles. They in turn welcomed us into their hearts and homes. We will always be friends now. More than that, these friendships have given us real insights into their world – the world that their children bring within them when they come to Pennington.

Friendship leading to understanding and respect—this is what i want for all our students. The great news is that we are finding ways to foster this. We now reach out to new international students and families by pairing them with local host families. This year a new program—global studies—will develop relationships with sister schools in other countries and provide more focused and intentional study-abroad opportunities. Parents and alumni from overseas are increasingly joining with parents and alumni in this country to support the school financially. These all contribute to the global life of this school.

i hope you enjoy reading about these developments and those who support the school in the following pages.

With all good wishes,

stephanie g. townsend Head of School

Head of school Penny townsend and As-sociate Head of school bill Hawkey traveled to Korea and china in March to visit alumni and both current and prospective Pennington families. they returned, thrilled with both the warm hospitality they had experienced and the inspiring sights they had been privileged to see. Pennington Magazine asked Hawkey to provide some first-person observations from the journey.

When Penny Townsend first approached me about accompanying her on her annual visit, I was surprised and excited. This was Penny’s fifth trip, and the way she talked on the flight over, I knew that I was in good hands as long as I could keep up with her (more about this later).

the pair’s first commitment was the now-tra-ditional luncheon with the “Korean mothers.”

By 11:00 the morning of our arrival, I was in good shape and feeling surprisingly rested. It was an unseasonably warm day, and Penny suggested walking to our luncheon destination. Although she was loaded down with gift bags, and I with our laptop and School paraphernalia, I quickly re-alized that I was jogging to keep up with Penny’s speed-walking pace. She seemed to know every shortcut and side street to take to our destination.

Lunch with the “moms” was wonderful. I espe-cially enjoyed speaking with the mothers of our senior Korean students. Everyone was so nice and positive about her child’s experience and, of

course, each mother wanted to make sure that her son/daughter was doing well, working hard, and happy. After lunch we had a chance to visit Penny’s favorite Leeum Museum with several of the mothers.

Among the Pennington families townsend and Hawkey met in Korea, often sharing meals, were those of Ji Ho Ahn ’11, Ha Keun Kim ’11, Hyeon seon Ju ’13, Younghun ’11 and Young-su ’12 Lim, Myung Jin Ko ’12, Ho Lim Lee ’11, and June Young Kwon ’11. one night they dined with the rue P’08 family and trustee bill Mccomb P’07 ’12, who joined them on pass-ing through seoul on his way to Hong Kong.

As we met with parents, I was continually amazed by how much Penny knows about each of our in-

Pennington Across the Globe

ternational families. I was also appreciative of Penny’s palate: she is always willing to try some-thing new to eat, and she stays strictly to the local diet.

On the second day our driver whisked us off to meet Sung Jun Park ’08, who was serving his last months of the two-year military service required for all South Korean men. We then sped down to Pantech Corporation, where we met Chairman B. Y. Park P’08 ’12 and traveled to the Demilita-rized Zone, a rare privilege which Mr. Park had arranged. We were met by a full military party.

We were virtually the only guests at the DMZ at that time of day, and we were given our orders as we approached the actual line of demarcation: no smiling or laughing, and no sudden movements when we approached the border. We were told that we were being photographed, and I thought the North Koreans might suspect Penny of being a dignitary of significance because she had a South Korean military entourage.

On leaving the DMZ we drove to Tunnel #3, one of three tunnels dug by the North Koreans in a bold move to invade the South. After taking a boxcar down a steep set of tracks to reach the tun-nel, with required hard hats snugly fitted on our heads, we were encouraged to walk approximately 400 meters to the end of the tunnel. Of course, Penny was the first to charge down the tunnel, and we all dutifully followed (hunched over to avoid hitting our heads on the tunnel ceiling).

That night we met Mr. Park at Touch the Sky at the top of the tallest building in Seoul. With a commanding view of the city, we dined in a

private room with the most extravagant menu I could have imagined. We told stories, laughed, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves until late that evening.

We left for Shanghai on Monday, but not before we met Jae Hyeok Heo ’08 and So Young Kim ’07 for a quick tour of Seoul and a wonderful bibim-bap lunch. Jae, serving the last few months of his two-year commitment to the South Korean navy, was looking forward to returning to Amherst Col-lege for his sophomore year this fall. So Young was home from Brown University. The two alumni proudly shepherded us around their city.

We arrived at Shanghai International Airport in the early evening, and as we walked through the terminal gates we were embraced by Mr. Guo Guang and Ms. Maggie Mao, parents of Ze Yu “Charlie” Guo ’13, and their delightful entourage, including translator and camera crew. Thanks to this crew from Ms. Mao’s company, we would

have a film memento of our entire time in China. Shanghai is like an architect’s playground where the only directive from city planners must be to dream big—really big. I was in awe of the exotic-looking buildings and the expansiveness of the city. We arrived at the Shanghai Sheraton, where all of the details of our trip had been generously and meticulously taken care of by the Guo family. I arose early (I thought) and found Penny in the hotel restaurant, where I learned that she had already exercised, walked around the local neigh-borhood, showered, and eaten breakfast. Our first stop that morning was the Shanghai Museum, filled with ancient porcelain, bronze, jade, and

pottery, some pieces dating back 8,000 years! Af-ter the museum, we headed to the Bund to catch a glimpse of the financial center of Shanghai.

That afternoon brought an impromptu visit to the Shanghai Zoo, where the film crew and I really got to see Penny in action. After a sumptuous lunch, I was ready for a nap—but Penny seemed to be setting a land speed record around the zoo. Fortu-nately, the snoozing pandas caught her attention, and we all were afforded a brief respite. Penny then approached a Chinese family with very young (and cute) kids for a picture, embracing the children as if they were her own. I was amazed and relieved that the parents were seemingly quite taken with Penny; we wouldn’t be part of an “in-ternational incident.”

that evening Mr. guo and Ms. Mao hosted the first-ever Pennington reception in shanghai for current and future Pennington families, em-ceed by a shanghai television anchorwoman.

I quickly realized that Mr. Guo and Ms. Mao again had gone out of their way to put Pennington in the best light possible for our more than fifty guests. Haimu Sun, a Northwestern University graduate who speaks fluent English and is an edu-cational consultant in Shanghai, served as Penny’s translator.

Our destination the next day, our last full day in China, was Hangzhou, a legendary city of seven million southwest of Shanghai, to which we trav-eled by China’s fastest train (over 400 kilometers per hour). After passing through the rural coun-tryside, we arrived at Hangzhou and the beautiful Lingyin Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples

in the region, of which Mr. Guo is a benefactor. We enjoyed lunch at a traditional restaurant on the West Lake, followed by a spectacular show, a boat ride, and dinner at the Louwailon restaurant.

I slept some on the plane home and felt surpris-ingly alert and energetic the next morning. This feeling carried me through Friday at school, the day before our spring break, but when Sunday arrived, I realized that I had not miraculously avoided jet lag.

I spent the next few days recovering and kept thinking of our international students, who make this trip at least three times each academic year. I have a much better appreciation for their physi-cal adjustment due to travel fatigue, the huge ad-justment to their normal diet (which seems more healthful than our own), and, of course, their long time away from home and family.

Even before leaving for home, however, I began to miss the great people who had so generously taken care of us throughout our week-long travels. It was an unforgettable trip!

townsend described the journey as “a family experience all the way around” and said they were greeted with “incredible hospitality in both countries.” she is always pleased to gain greater understanding of the countries and cul-tures from which some of Pennington’s inter-national students come. “Visiting Korea and china is still an opportunity not many Ameri-cans have,” she said. “What a fortunate person i am!” Hawkey obviously agrees.

“by the end of my third year at bU, i wanted to be a part of something that would allow me to donate my time and help those in need,” she says. “i love traveling and experiencing new cultures and countries, so i thought the Peace corps would enable me to give back as well as allow me to see a different part of the world.” she adds that her experiences at Pennington awakened her sense of fulfillment from vol-unteer service—especially the annual holiday party for HomeFront clients. “i always had a great time volunteering for that event and looked forward to it every winter.”

The application process for the Peace corps is far from simple, however, and takes approxi-mately a year to complete, according to Picari-ello. The application—including essays, refer-ences, educational background, employment history, and community and volunteer activi-ties—comes first. Then, for those deemed po-tentially qualified, there is an interview, when a recruiter meets with the candidate to discuss “skills, interests, opportunities available, and issues that will affect you if you are accepted in the Peace corps, such as adaptability, and

social and cultural awareness.” if the recruiter believes the candidate is qualified to be a Peace corps volunteer, the applicant is “nominated for placement.” The potential volunteer may request nomination to a particular location; Picariello did not exercise that option, how-ever.

next follows a battery of medical forms for physical, dental, and vision examinations. once medically qualified and legally cleared, applicants are evaluated and compared to other candidates. successful applicants will receive an invitation that names a specific country and a detailed job description, usually two to three months in advance of the program’s starting date. if the candidate accepts the invitation, more detailed information about orientation, training, and departure follows.

Picariello’s adventure began in July 2010, when she flew from new Jersey (her family lives in Pennington) to san Francisco, joining the fifty-three other volunteers for a day of orien-tation before departure for cambodia. “once we arrived in cambodia it was two months of

nonstop training,” Picariello says, as the volun-teers were divided into three training villages in Kampong cham Province. each volunteer lived with a host family, learned about cambo-dian culture, and adjusted to the new environ-ment. There were intensive four-hour sessions in both language and technical areas. “since i am a health volunteer,” Picariello explains, “i learned about cambodia’s health system and the most common diseases and illnesses that i would see. i also learned more about what i would be doing at my permanent site, such as secondary projects and how to get people in-volved and concerned about their health.”

A typical day for Picariello begins at 5:30 a.m. with a run or a session with the Khmer lan-guage tutor, whom she sees at least three times a week. “i feel that my proficiency in Khmer is coming along,” she says. “Language is a day-by-day process, and i learn something new every day. i remember when i first arrived here and did not know a single word of Khmer, but now i can hold conversations and people can actu-ally understand what i am saying.” At 8:00 she begins her day at the health center, spending

“i feel very fortunate for everything i have in my life and for everything i have been able to do,” says Peace corps health volunteer Andrea Picariello ’05, posted in chiphu, svay rieng Province, cambodia. “i want to give to those who can benefit from the knowledge and experience that i have been able to obtain.” After graduation from Pennington, Picariello entered a five-year course of study at boston University, completing a bachelor of science degree in both athletic training and health science; she minored in human physiology.

most of her time in the pregnancy ward. “in cambodia, pregnant women are given booklets to docu-ment their pregnancy,” she ex-plains. The booklet is filled in with information about the patient’s age, weight, blood pressure, abdominal measurement, and reproductive history. At the first visit, women are given a blood test to determine the presence of HiV.

“coming from the states to cam-bodia, the hospitals and health centers can be a little scary. There is definitely room for improvement, and i am hoping to be able to pro-vide increased awareness.” sanitary procedures fall short of western practices, and although Picariello is close to the staff and hopes to introduce some reforms, she recognizes their reluctance to change their ways. “That doesn’t mean i won’t try, though.”

After a two-hour break for lunch and siesta (“During the afternoons in cambodia, ev-eryone is napping”) Picariello returns to the health center for another hour or two. After the afternoon session she reads or plays with the neighborhood children before returning to the health center to eat rice porridge with the staff at about 5:00 p.m. if there is a procedure or a birth, she will observe and assist; “for ex-ample, just the other day i went on an ambu-lance ride into the provincial hospital because a woman was having complica-tions giving birth.” Picariello is usually in bed by 7:30 p.m. to watch a movie and then asleep by 9:00.

on the weekends she occasionally teaches english at a private school, gearing the lessons toward health. she has covered such topics as HiV/AiDs, mosquito-borne illnesses, food groups, hygiene, and sanitation. Weekends also afford her the time to devise and work on special projects. one such project, which she funded from donations she has collected, is the guppy farm she be-gan at the health center. The guppies, living in water basins, eat the mosquito larvae hatching there; her hope is that the guppies will decrease the number of mosquitoes in the area, and thus the rate of mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria and dengue fever.

Her current project is constructing a library for the local high school, which she antici-pates costing about $12,000. “currently, the school does not have a library. When students do not have classes or have free time during their school day, they will often gamble or just sit around. i am hoping that this library will encourage and promote learning. The library will contain both english and Khmer books, as well as world maps.” she recently received blueprints for the library and hoped to have the budget finalized at the end of June.

on a slightly smaller scale, she is trying to create a health coloring book for the local el-

Karen curtin Voorhees, a member of the Pennington faculty since 1999, is a for-mer Peace corps volunteer. As a small child she had seen President Kennedy discussing the Peace corps on television, and she knew from that time on that she wanted to volunteer for the new organiza-tion. After her graduation from the Uni-versity of new Hampshire in 1978 with a degree in spanish, she applied, request-ing a spanish-speaking country for her assignment.

When her invitation came, however, it was for niger, an African nation less than 20 years independent from France. “i had had only three years of high school French,” Voorhees says, “but i decided to go ahead.” The training period not only immersed her in French and but also taught her basic words and phrases in Hausa, which would be the only language spoken by many people in her assigned village, Madaoua. “i learned how to count, how to shop, and to say important things like ‘There’s a snake in the house.’”

in Madaoua, on a paved but isolated road, she had her own mud brick house; there was no running water or electricity. Voor-hees taught middle-school-age children english as a second Language in the local school. she did not see her parents for the entire period she was overseas. in those pre-email days, she wrote letters and mailed photo film home for developing.

ementary school students. The pictures to color would address topics such as brushing teeth, washing hands with soap, bathing daily, washing fruits and vegetables before con-sumption, exercising, and learning the differ-ent food groups. “it is sad to me that people do not know or practice simple ways to keep themselves healthy: simple acts, such as hand-washing, using a toilet, or drinking safe water. i am hoping to educate the villagers on ways to live a healthy, long life.”

other projects she has in mind are establishing after-school clubs for sports and english and planting a garden. “The most satisfying experi-ences have been developing close relationships with my host families and those with which i work. Along with building relationships, it is rewarding teaching and playing with the youth. They are so eager to learn english and are en-joyable to be around.”

Although her living conditions with her train-ing host family were spartan—a wood house without glazed windows, an inch-thick twin-size mattress surrounded by a mosquito net, and limited bathing and toilet facilities in the same room—Picariello bonded quickly with that family and has continued to visit them when time permits. At her permanent site, she lives in a tile house with glass windows—no mosquito net required—and twenty-four-hour electricity. There is no indoor plumbing, but there are separate rooms with a western toilet, flushed with a bucket of water, and a “bucket shower.” A recent upgrade occurred when her host family bought a refrigerator and a washing

machine—“so washing my clothes by hand is no longer a back-breaking weekly event. This is what we volunteers call ‘Posh corps.’” she buys her own meals.

“some of the frustrations have been the ability to communicate adequately and to better un-derstand the cultural differences: for example, knowing when ‘yes’ means ‘no’ and ‘no’ means ‘yes,’ as well as the concept of losing face. i know that every day i am becoming more flu-ent in the language and the cambodian life-style. i just need to be patient with myself.”

Picariello does not anticipate returning to the United states during her twenty-seven-month commitment to the Peace corps, although her parents will visit and travel in and around southeast Asia with her during her vacation. The internet, to which she now has regular access without making a trip to the provincial town, has permitted her to keep in touch with her family via email and skype. in addition, since departing a year ago, she has posted en-tries to a blog, Andrea goes to cam[p]bodia (http://andreagoestocamp.blogspot.com/), chronicling her experiences with slightly irrev-erent humor and outlining the special projects she hopes to raise funds to complete.

it is perhaps an indication of Andrea Picari-ello’s optimism and sense of adventure that she opted not to request a particular region during the application process. Her theory was, she says, that she would have “a great experience” anywhere the Peace corps might send her—“and so i am!”

coming from the states... the hospitals and health centers can be a little scary. There is definitely room for improvement, and I am

hoping to be able to provide increased awareness.

Heather bailey, who retired in June after eleven years teaching spanish at Pennington, and her husband, steve, will begin their Peace corps posting in January 2012. steve retired from the Princeton Day school faculty.

because both baileys are fluent in spanish they requested central or south America; offered a choice of community and youth development or teaching english, they requested the former. it seems apparent that the Peace corps recog-nized the value of two experienced teachers, however, because the baileys were soon an-swering questionnaires asking their feelings about teaching in a developing country and their attitudes toward the rote memorization and corporal punishment often used in those countries’ schools. They also had to take an exam to prove their fluency in spanish. “to survive [in the Peace corps] they say you must have patience and flexibility,” said Heather bailey at one point in the process. “They are clearly testing both!”

At press time, the baileys had just received their formal invitation to join the Peace corps. They will leave on January 10 for Panama, where Heather will teach english and steve will do environmental education.

• Dr. george Emil Riday, Pennington’s old-est alumnus, died May 27 in redlands, cA, where he had lived for forty-six years. born January 16, 1912, in Philadelphia, riday dropped out of high school after two years and worked for an advertising agency, pursu-ing his interest in art. Three years later he was awarded an athletic scholarship at Penning-ton, where he enrolled as a junior. According to his daughter, Loralee swaner, Pennington was “pivotal” in his life, both because it al-lowed him to continue his education and because while at the school he met “the love of his life,” Phyllis catherine Hewson. They were married in May 1937 and celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary a few months before Phyllis’s death.

After completion of undergraduate study at eastern baptist college, he went on to gradu-ate from eastern baptist Theological seminary. After serving churches in new Jersey, riday entered the U.s. Army as a chaplain, a week before Pearl Harbor was bombed. in Decem-ber 1942, leaving his wife and their two small children, he headed for north Africa with American troops. He was part of the 91st evacuation Hospital serving in sicily, england, the normandy invasion, Holland, and germany until the end of World War ii. captain george e. riday was awarded the bronze star for meritorious service.

riday’s war experience inspired him to pursue further study in the field of mental health. He earned a master’s degree in educational psychology and a Ph.D. degree in counseling psychology from Wayne state University and the University of Michigan, respectively. He served as director of christian education for Detroit baptist churches and later became aca-demic dean and professor of psychology at Alderson-broaddus college in Philippi, WV. His life in california began as professor of pastoral psychology at the california baptist Theo-logical seminary. During this time he wrote Understanding the Learner. He was the first coun-seling psychologist on the staff of Patton state Hospital and was a professor of psychology at san bernardino Valley college for twelve years. He also taught at crafton Hills college, held adjunct or visiting professorships with other institutions, and had a limited private practice as a clinical psychologist.

riday was an active member of the First baptist church of redlands as well as of many community cultural and human relations organizations or commissions, some of which he helped found and served as president or chair. Having a lifelong passion for art, in retirement he created watercolors, acrylics, and sculpture, participating in many shows and receiving numerous awards. Three of his paintings were selected to be permanently displayed at the headquarters of the American Association of Homes and services for the Aging in Wash-ington, Dc.

riday is survived by his children, Mary beth Hull, Loralee swaner, Jane tveten, and george e. riday; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

routes. The winter is the best time to see which animals are in the area. This is but one of the many projects that we, as volunteers, help state and federal agencies with in getting their work done, especially now that funding is so restrict-ed to pay them to have employees do it.

“The many people i have worked with in my area come from various walks of life and edu-cational backgrounds, and all ages, out of widespread public interest in our state’s natural resources. our principal activities are to gather information for research and management of these natural resources and to help with edu-cational programs in schools and for the gen-eral public, as well as restoration of public and private lands. in these projects, we also work on an individual basis with local and regional conservation organizations, and private land-owners who voluntarily dedicate portions of their land for wildlife and waterfowl habitat. This latter program, which i like, involves the landowner in voluntary efforts, which pre-serves both wildlife resources and the farm and ranching life. . . . in turn, these agencies are grateful for our help in slack times. They are all friendly people. i am 79 now and, if the bears don’t get me, will be 80 in February. but, what’s age? never thought much about it. still enjoy snowshoeing and skiing. Keeps ya young and ornery.”

1961 sam mather and Eliot terborgh, Fiftieth reunion co-chairs, report:

“The day was dreary with overcast skies and periods of scattered showers—however, ev-eryone’s spirit was high as nine far-flung mem-bers of the Pennington school class of 1961

From Berlin to Washington and Beyondrudy boschwitz ’47, born in berlin, germany, came to the United states with his family in De-cember 1935. “As the ship slid by the statue of Liberty my mom pointed it out to me and may have described its meaning—i don’t recall,” he says. “but along with so many other immigrants before and since, we have lived the American dream that is symbolized by the statue.”

Pennington played a role in that dream for bo-schwitz. After attending public schools in new rochelle, nY, he came to the school, he says, because another Jewish immigrant from eu-rope, gerd benda ’43, had preceded him, was valedictorian, and went to Princeton. “so i sup-pose that was my charge. i was neither valedic-torian (but i was salutatorian) nor did i go to Princeton ( Johns Hopkins instead).” it cost $900.00 per year to attend Pennington then, he recalls, for tuition, room, and board; he earned a third of his fees by working in the dining hall, setting tables and cleaning up.

The school’s “very competitive intellectual environment” was “demanding and invigorat-ing,” boschwitz says. He has retained a lasting appreciation for his training in Latin, “one of the most useful subjects . . . . it taught me english sentence structure and the roots of very many english words.”

boschwitz was graduated from the new York University school of commerce (now the nYU stern school of business) and new York University Law school. He served in the U.s. Army signal corps and, after admission to the bar in new York and Wisconsin, began to practice law in new York. He later moved to Minnesota, where he was founder and chair-man of Plywood Minnesota, inc. (later named Home Valu interiors), and, after serving as a republican national committeeman from Minnesota, was elected in 1978 to represent that state in the U.s. senate. He served two terms and has continued to be active in the republican Party and in various civic and charitable organizations. He was presented a citi-zen’s Medal in recognition of his work in 1991 as President george H. W. bush’s emissary in ethiopia. in 2005 President george W. bush named him the U.s. ambassador to the United nations commission on Human rights, which met in geneva, switzerland.

boschwitz has some special memories of Pennington. He was “on most friendly terms with a football player called ‘snake-eyes’” [the late James Vojcsik ’47—ed.], whom he helped with his math homework. “snake-eyes . . . was a fine fellow, and being his friend raised my status among the students. nobody fooled with snake-eyes—and to some degree that rubbed off on his friends.”

Another memory concerns the day that President Franklin D. roosevelt died in April 1945. “My roommate, who was from a very republican family, went up and down the hall cheer-ing, so i pounded him. He was quite a bit larger than i, and it was not a very successful fight on my side, and unfortunately snake-eyes was not around! i was a republican even then but had a high regard for FDr, who was a great wartime president. . . .” He adds that he had similar respect for John F. Kennedy, “for whom i voted (i didn’t like nixon), but since then i have pretty consistently stayed with my Party.”

boschwitz also remembers required daily chapel, and although he admits to sometimes helping Vojcsik with his math homework while it was going on, he values the experience overall. “it was a Methodist service, but had the effect of making a better Jew out of me—though i may not have thought so at the time.”

joined for our Fiftieth class reunion. Present during the two-day celebration were george cawman from scottsdale, AZ; wayne (tom) Douglass from cape May, nJ; Bob harris and his wife, Arlene, from north Las Vegas, nV; sam mather and his wife, cindy, from Pennington, nJ; Bob schlenger from Wall township, nJ; Bob smith and his wife, Lian, from north eastham, MA; Jim solomos from cape coral, FL; Eliot terborgh from Atherton, cA; and Fred wilkens from Phillipsburg, nJ.

“everyone was extremely busy with a full two-day schedule of events that included watching athletic events, touring the greatly expanded and much improved campus facilities, and ac-tually attending classes—again. of course we dined on a tremendous amount of good food, and took note that now the campus is even coed. Wow—how things have changed—or were we just born too early?

“The highlight of the reunion involved reunion chairs sam and eliot’s recognizing and induct-ing Jim and barbara brown and Paul and carla Hausmann, as honorary members of the class of 1961. We are sorry to report that Jim died a few years ago and barbara could not attend be-cause of a prior family commitment. However, Paul and carla were present to receive their proclamations. As you would expect, Paul was in his usual ‘rare’ form, but arrived without his usual ‘sidearm’ oak yardstick. This oversight was quickly corrected as a yardstick magically appeared from behind the podium.

“We believe we reflect the sentiments of ev-eryone in attendance when we say everyone had a great time, and the many shared stories about our Pennington experiences fifty years ago appeared as vivid as if they had occurred yesterday. A special thanks to everyone who put forth the effort to attend.”

in the field of education. Abe plans to continue teaching for three more years before retiring from Lesley after an illustrious and extensive career.

1969 • Frederick george Richard von Roth ii died unexpectedly at his home in Weston, Vt, on May 21. Dick was 61. born in englewood, nJ, Dick studied fine arts at Dean Junior college in Franklin, MA, and then moved to Vermont in 1973. He and Mary b. castner were married in 1979 and settled in Weston.

Dick inherited his creative and artistic talents from his grandfather, F.g.r. roth, whose sculptures include the Vermont Morgan horse, the bowdoin bear, the columbia Lion and the Princeton tiger. After moving to Vermont, Dick turned his creative energies into form-ing a fine arts store in south Londonderry. in response to the stronger demand for custom acrylic work, Acrylic Designs grew into a large-scale manufacturer of promotional displays, now operating out of north springfield, Vt. Dick was known as a fair and caring employer who loved to guide his employees to reach their best potential.

Dick pursued a variety of hobbies includ-ing collecting fine watches, putting on magic shows, building miniature train models, riding motorcycles, keeping a salt-water aquarium and—his most consuming passion—boating. Dick especially delighted in involving his sons in each new activity.

When their sons were young, Dick and Mary owned a home near friends in san Miguel, Mexico, a place that was special to him and to which he hoped to return. The family also enjoyed summers at their family home in Ar-undel, Me. Dick made many friends during his travels and enjoyed entertaining wherever he was, especially on his series of ever-larger trawl-ers. in return for passage on the boat, friends were often encouraged to help Dick clean and polish her. A connoisseur of fine wines and vi-ands, Dick will be remembered by his friends as a superb teller of jokes and narrator of funny tales. With his sharp wit and sometimes sar-castic delivery, Dick elicited a laugh on every occasion. His friends and family relied on his innate business sense and good decision-mak-ing skills. Whether at home or on the boat, his happiest moments were those spent with his family.

Franklin and The Guardsman After finishing various work and personal projects, Douglas A. Franklin ’95 began writing stories as a hobby in the spring of 2010. He has now published his first novel, The guardsman: Honor of the Fallen, a “mystery set in a science fiction environ-

ment,” published in June under the pen name r.g. taark at Amazon.com and available for Kindle. Franklin says, “i actually got into writing stories by accident; i never intended to write a book, of all things.” Accident or not, The guardsman is the first book of a tril-ogy, centering on the mysterious situation the two main characters need to survive, then unravel, and finally avenge.

After rotc at syracuse University, Franklin served in the U.s. Army from 2000 to 2005, when a crushed ankle sidelined him permanently. He left the army with the rank of captain. While rehabilitating his Army injuries and working on his physical fitness, he starting read-ing extensively. After finishing The count of Monte cristo and then a new science fiction novel from an author who was an old favorite, he found that the new novel suffered in com-parison. He rarely watched television while in the service and says, “After the disappointing book, i watched a new television series and was frustrated by the poor writing there. i said to myself, ‘i can do better than that!’”

Franklin says that The guardsman combines some real-life experiences and a “desire for something new” in the science fiction arena. “When i was in school my hobby was full contact Mixed Martial Arts. i studied gung-Fu, Muay-Thai and Japanese and brazilian Jujitsu. i maintained those skills throughout my time in the Army. i also drew on my expe-riences in combat, garrison and training environments. Almost all of the characters i have developed incorporate people i have served, trained, or worked with.”

The “most fun” part of the book to write, he says, “has to be the young woman involved. she is a combination of a really good friend of mine and my conceptual editor, with a touch of imagination run wild. she is a smart girl and something of a wild child in the story, and she adds a lot of color and life to the hero’s relatively drab life. she is also the target of the mystery’s plot, so she was not only fun to write but an essential character.”

brian Methot ’95 recommended a fellow artist to Franklin to create the cover art for the book.

Dog Rescue Renews the Soul in 1997, A. Louis Denton ’76 decided to adopt a dog. His wife had recently died; they had no children. Although his professional life was quite busy, he thought a pet might help him through the time of sadness, and he might help the dog, as well.

Denton had never had a dog as a child, but he felt equal to pet own-ership and went to a Pennsylvania sPcA shelter to look for an ap-propriate adoptee. He came home with elmo, an approximately two-year-old black and tan german shepherd. elmo, “the greatest dog ever,” is the first of many that inspire almost childlike enthusi-asm from Denton. His life changed as a result. Wondering if elmo was lonely, six months later he returned to the shelter and brought home sneezer, a saint bernard.

Denton began to research german shepherds and saint bernards and learned that elmo and sneezer’s friendship was not unusual; the two breeds usually get along beautifully. After he had adopted these two dogs, it wasn’t long before Denton came to the attention of dog rescue organizations and became involved in breed-specific rescue.

Dog rescue organizations are “almost fanatical” in their approach, he says, putting prospective families through a rigorous examination process including a very long questionnaire. Particularly with breeds of this size, he explains, the organizations want to be sure adoptive families un-derstand the full ramifications of bringing a large dog into their home. For example, they might ask, “Do you know how much a saint bernard eats?” or “Where will the dog sleep?” Denton points out that a small, fluffy saint bernard puppy might be thirteen pounds at adoption but grow to 185 pounds within a year. in addition to food costs, large dogs are more expensive to board at kennels; some breeds have particular medical issues, as well.

Denton, a lawyer, is now president and ceo of Denton borer and Associates, inc., an investment advisory firm in blue bell, PA. Despite the demands of his career, the dogs are now an essential part of his life. often he has had four or five of these large dogs at a time. Unlike most children, he points out happily, he can have about as many dogs as he wants. He has built comfortable kennels for them, indoor/outdoor facili-ties with running water.

Although Denton sometimes looks for dogs himself, using Pet Finder or contacting local shelters, most of his leads come from the rescue organizations, which monitor various shelters (sPcA, Humane society, and others). Knowing that he had taken a german shepherd and a saint bernard, the rescue groups began calling him when a dog of either breed is brought to a shelter to see whether he is interested. the rescue groups try to place dogs permanently with approved families, he explains; if they cannot find permanent homes and the shelters are facing eu-thanizing the animals, they attempt to place the dogs in foster situations temporarily. When he is called and is able to add another pet, Denton usually adopts the dogs rather than just fostering them, however, because he so quickly becomes attached to them.

the rescue organizations have a large communications network, and they make every effort to facilitate the animals’ being adopted. “Let’s say there’s a dog in chicago,” Denton says. “Maybe someone will drive the dog twenty miles to a certain exit on the interstate, where someone else will pick him up and take him farther,” forming a sort of human dog-rescue chain. Denton personally has gone as far as buffalo, nY, to rescue a dog. While he was in buffalo, picking up a saint bernard there, he got a call about another saint bernard in Mechanicsburg, PA. “What the heck,” Denton sent word to the Mechanicsburg shelter. “i’ll take him, too.” Kirby, the buffalo saint bernard, was a show dog who had ended up in a shelter. teddy, from Mechanicsburg, seemed to be off the streets. He was shy and frightened and took longer to warm up.

saint bernards are gentle giants, Denton explains, and he deliberately avoids giving his dogs intimidating names, choosing “kid-friendly” mon-ikers so that neighborhood children will know the dogs are good-natured. the children have certainly caught on to that idea. one Halloween a neighborhood kid wanted to be a cowgirl and asked if teddy might dress up as her horse. teddy, complete with hat and saddle, accompanied the girl on her trick-or-treat rounds. teddy also visited nursing homes with Denton, and “he seemed to know he needed to be gentle.”

today Denton has two saint bernards (beanie and ollie) and one german shepherd (boomer), ranging in age from less than one year to two years old. “Animals can’t take care of themselves,” he says. “Many large dogs like these two breeds wind up in shelters because they are just too big. they can’t help that.” He considers his life richer for being able to help the dogs. “Pets add great value and pleasure to our lives,” he says.

the dogs he has cared for and loved would doubtless agree with the assessment of the Mechanicsburg, PA, shelter when he agreed to take teddy: “Lou, you rock!”

Board of Trustees

From the Board chairon behalf of the board of trustees of The Pennington school, it is my great pleasure to report on another very successful school year. The school was able to raise more than $1,800,000, with the Pennington Fund reaching a record $776,000. neither of these achievements would have been possible without the extraordinary support of the Pennington community. i would also like to take a moment to recognize the many volunteers who helped us achieve these fi-nancial successes.

i am particularly pleased with the board's contributions to the Pennington Fund. The board was asked to consider a 20% gift increase and responded by raising a record $218,000, rep-resenting a 23% increase over last year. i believe this commitment on our part helped other donors to recognize the importance of supporting this annual appeal, and helped build a solid foundation for its success.

equally significant is the generosity of our current parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grand-parents, faculty, staff and friends of the school. by supporting our annual appeal, our endow-ment, and our campaigns, our community continues to reaffirm its belief in the mission of the school, and its support of our diverse and talented students, faculty and staff.

since its founding in 1838, The Pennington school has provided a diverse curriculum that pre-pares its students to meet the demands of college life and beyond. The school’s mission is to challenge its students not only to seek excellence in academics, in athletics, and in the arts, but also to be caring and compassionate citizens of the larger global community.

The board is confident that this, our 174th academic year, will be equally successful on all fronts. it is our privilege and honor to lead this extraordinary community.

From the parents committee chairsWe offer our grateful thanks to Pennington’s parents for the hard work and generosity that made this year’s annual appeal a resounding success! our current parents generously contributed $442,220 to the 2010-2011 Pennington Fund, which is 57% of the total $776,000 raised. The Parents committee worked with dedication and enthusiasm to achieve this year's record-breaking success. These annual fund contributions upgraded every aspect of Pennington life, and we applaud our parents for bridging the gap between tuition revenue and operating expense that is the chal-lenge of every independent school. We encourage current parents to join the Parents committee, and to enjoy the camaraderie and accomplishment of enhancing our children’s education.

Supporting the pennington School

thE iRA chARitABlE RollovER is BAck FoR 2011!

Are you required to take a distribution from your iRA that you just don’t need, but on which you have to pay income tax? Are you age 70½ or older?

great news!

You can transfer some or all of your iRA distribution (limits apply) direct to Pennington instead and avoid having to pay income tax. if you have assets in other retirement vehicles, you must first roll them into an iRA and then make the transfer to Pennington.

Another way of using your retirement plan to make a gift is to designate The Pennington School as the beneficiary. Benefi-ciary designations (even partial designations) are a common and easy way to make a gift. It can also save your estate from an income tax and estate planning burden that, combined, may exceed half of your plan assets. Leaving retirement funds to Pennington eliminates both income and estate taxes.

A planned gift to Pennington indicates a commitment to the long-term success of the school. These gifts, generally made through bequests and trusts, will create a very strong cornerstone for the future of Pennington. gifts to the Francis Harvey green society can help advance the school and its mission, ensure the continued financial strength of the school, and provide future generations of students with an exceptional learning experience.

There is no minimum contribution—just the desire to participate in Pennington's future.

Dr. Francis Harvey Green was headmaster of The Pennington School from 1920 to 1943. His legacy lives on in the commit-ment to academic excellence and respect for each individual that was his hallmark as a teacher and administrator.

if you have an interest in learning more about the iRA charitable rollover, or how to make a planned gift to the Pennington school, please contact Maggie Kelly at 609–737–6126 or via email at [email protected].

After stanley Holmes ’43 reminded us that 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of sto-ried Headmaster Dr. Francis Harvey green, Head of school Penny townsend decided a celebra-tion was in order. she called the school community together on May 19, Dr. green’s birthday, to kick off, with cupcakes, a year’s observance of his sesquicentennial. born slightly a month after the outbreak of the civil War, Dr. green was in his sixtieth year when he assumed the Pennington headmastership in December 1920, leaving West chester University, where he had been head of the english Department. His years as head (1920–43) encompassed some difficult times for the country—the great Depression and the early years of World War ii—but he found creative ways for boys of limited means to attend the school. graduates of those years remember the many dis-tinguished literary figures he brought to campus and, most of all, the impact of the man himself on their personal development.

in recognition of Dr. green’s significant role in Pennington’s history—and in celebration of his life well lived—the school is collecting alumni memories of or reflections on Dr. green, which will be posted on the school website. They may be submitted to [email protected].

My fond memories of Dr. Green and the Pennington School are many. One of the things I remember Dr. Green often saying was “Say what you mean, and mean what you say.” What a small world Pennington was at that time! Dr. Green’s wife was my father’s Sunday School teacher in Trenton, and my father sold Dr. Green several green cars in the ’30s and ’40s. Dr. Green had a personalized license plate, which was pretty rare in those days. The plate represents Lowellden and his birth date, May 19.
