MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank our donors for your gifts. You have been particularly generous this year. The tremendous response to the matching challenge issued by an anonymous donor in early 2012 resulted in an extraordinary $1,490,088 raised through the match! Along with other donations throughout the fiscal year, a total of $4,289,012 was fundraised in support of Pearson College and its mission for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012.

I am so grateful for your generosity. It is only through your support and the continued efforts of our remarkable academic and administrative staff that we are able to offer an educational experience that will provide our scholars with the ability to help make the world a better place. I have now had the privilege of serving as Chair of the Pearson College Board of Trustees for one year. I have visited the College on many occasions, and through my discussions with the students I am convinced that the College is arming young people who have the will to make a difference with the tools to do so and effectively contribute tosustainability and global peace.

That they have the opportunity to do so is thanks to you, our supporters.

Dr. Randall Gossen, Chair of the Pearson College Board of Trustees

MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR

When the school year came to a close in May I embarked on a mini-sabbatical cycling trek. I pen this note en route. It is a 10,000-km personal challenge in celebration of UWC’s 50th anniversary—but it has also turned out to be a powerful affirmation for me of how truly connected our Pearson College community is to each other and the world. Alumni and friends of the College have welcomed me into their homes and hearts during this journey, and have shared stories of the powerful impact Pearson College has had on their lives.

When students are together on campus, the College is abuzz with energy and a sense of global community. At the end of this two-year transformative educational experience, they leave committed to apply the skills and compassion learned at Pearson somehow and in some way in the world. With every graduating class, our community grows and expands—stretching and intersecting to have even more impact across the globe.

At the College itself, it has been a year of progress. We have further solidified our commitment to growing fundraising and ensuring financial stability. And there are exciting plans for campus renewal on the horizon. This hope and optimism is largely thanks to you, our community of supporters—a community committed to the mission of education as a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

You have made all the difference. Thank you.

Dr. David Hawley, College Director

“ The past year has been exciting as an alumnus of UWC. Together with my fellow members of the UWC China National Committee, we have expanded the number of students we send from China to various UWCs to over 40 students. We are also moving forward with our efforts to build a UWC in mainland China.”

RBCSCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENT FROM CHINA

“ Pearson College is truly a national treasure, nurturing our future leaders and providing a once-in-a-lifetime living and learning experience to some of the brightest young citizens of the world. RBC is privileged to have supported Pearson College since 1974, with scholarship funding of more than $780,000. I congratulate the class of 2012, wish all of Pearson’s new students the best of luck in the year to come and thank the faculty and staff for helping make possible so many bright futures.”

– Shari Austin, Vice President, Corporate Citizenship, RBC

MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE IN CHINA

I came to Pearson with the assumption that ‘cultural understanding’ meant that I would represent my country and exchange ideas with other countries. But the reality is that I am living with 160 to 180 people from

around the world who are not defined simply by their nationality, ethnicity or cultural background. I am exposed to diversity of every dimension I can think of. It is not only eye-opening, but also intriguing,

challenging and thought-provoking.

JANE FRANCIS & DAVE SKILLING

Jane Francis and Dave Skilling are longtime supporters and enthusiastic ambassadors of Pearson College. When speaking of their ongoing involvement with the College community, Jane explains, “It has added a richness to our lives, and is something we feel passionate about supporting.” Dave was formerly on staff at the College, and both Jane and Dave continue to engage in a variety of College activities. Their friendships with inspiring young scholars from around the world have been meaningful for them, and both feel strongly about helping to ensure that the full scholarship policy at Pearson College is maintained in perpetuity. They support Pearson College through annual donations, and a number of years ago they both named the College in their wills as part of their legacy planning.

UNITING THE WORLD AT PEARSON COLLEGE

THE UNITED WORLD COLLEGE MISSION:TO MAKE EDUCATION A FORCE TO UNITE PEOPLE, NATIONS AND CULTURES FOR PEACE AND A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.

It is only thanks to the generosity of philanthropic donors that Pearson College is able to provide a transformational educational experience. Young people of promise and potential from across Canada and around the world are able to come together to learn, to grow and to change because of your gift.

Your pivotal role in ensuring Pearson College can provide full scholarship opportunities to exceptional students allows Lester B. Pearson’s famous words in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech to live on:

“ How can there be peace without people understanding each other, and how can this be if they don’t know each other? ”

Your support has made it possible to unite the world on the campus of Pearson College for almost 40 years. We are grateful.
