BULL SALEWelcome to our 32nd Annual Production Sale. We all know how good the market has been for any class of livestock that was

sold last fall or will be sold in the near future. It is the livestock industry’s turn to thrive and finally catch up to the price that is

needed, not only for profit, but to meet the costs that we all have on a day to day basis. Will this market stay where it is at?

The short term looks very positive, but long term, is anybody’s guess. With that being said, now is not the time to be passive.

The genetic decisions we make today will not have an immediate effect, but will have an effect far longer when the market

may not be as variable as it is today. We feel that the genetics offered in this sale will improve your profitability not only short

term, but also into the future. These bulls are moderate for birth, positive in their growth and have improved carcass qualities

by their genetic profiles. You will notice the increase in the number of high percentage Gelbvieh. Most are sired by Super

Sport, who ranks in the top 1% of the breed for Weaning weight, top 2% for Yearling weight, top 5% for Yield grade, top 3%

for Carcass weight, top 3% for FPI (Feeder Profit Index) and top 10% for EPI (Efficiency Production Index). These sons will add

genetic merit and optimum heterosis. We have also added two sons of Connealy Consensus 7229, one of the hottest sires in

the Angus breed. Not only are they good cattle, but these sires allow us to double up the Belinda of Conanga 004 cow, who

is the dam of the original Consensus bull and In Focus 4 whose sons have been topping our sale the past few years. These

daughters should make awesome cows and will be used to make high percent Gelbviehs in the future.

jAgain we want to thank you for coming and if we can be of any help, please give us a call.

WE LIKE NOTHING BETTER THAN TO DISCUSS THE CATTLE BUSINESS, YOUR PROGRAM AND OURS.

Sincerely, The Pearsons 3 | AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION | www.GELBVIEH.org | 303-465-2333 | AUGUST 2014

Carcass traitsYield grade (YG): Dierences in yield grade score,

which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

Carcass weight (CW): Dierences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.

Ribeye area (REA): Dierences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.

Marbling (MB): Predicts the dierences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

Fat (FT): Dierences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield drade. Eciency traits

Dry matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.

*Average daily gain (ADG): Dierence in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period.

*Residual feed intake (RFI): Dened as the dierence between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inecient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more ecient because they consume less than expected.

What is an Index?Indexes are tools that allow you to select for several

EPDs at once, making selections more ecient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant.

Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.

$Cow: Represents the genetic value in dollars of prot of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more protable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive eciency as well as other traits that lead to protability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also inuence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed eciency and carcass value are also included in $Cow.

Eciency prot index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed ecient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. e EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to nd those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less.

Feeder prot index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

This year you will find more high percentage Angus, 75% or higher than last year. These bulls have the carcass and maternal “maybe better” than straight Angus. M4, as he is called here, is a maternal half brother to the original Connealy Consensus bull whose sons have set numerous high selling averages for Connealy Angus. The mark of a really true breeding bull is his ability to sire offspring that are consistent in type and kind no matter the mating. M4 does that. The legacy of this remarkable sire will be carried on by his outstanding producing daughters and hopefully through embryo transplant. M4 was lost due to a hip injury. We’re thankful we have a limited supply of semen which will allow us the ability to produce more sons and daughters from our best producing cows.

This bull was purchased to use on the In Focus 4 daughters. If In Focus 4 has one fault it would be the front ends on his progeny. Thus 001X came into play and the results have been fabulous. His offspring will be high percentage Angus or Angus Hybrids if you prefer. Analyze this sire group all out of first calf heifers.

We purchased this bull from Stonegate Farms in Alberta, Canada. Expectation offers an outcross pedigree in low birth, moderate framed, well muscled, sound footed genetics. Used successfully on our first calf heifers and also an AI sire.

This bull has a killer look, along with the natural thickness and performance so valued in today’s industry. This bull is one of the soundest, square hipped, correct made bulls we have owned. Sired by the 2008 Maine-Anjou Show Bull of the Year, Premium Blend 47S, a powerfully constructed performance bull. We are confident that the Mad Money cattle will not only add thickness and pounds, but will pass on his eye appeal to a set of feeder cattle.

LWHF Super Sport; Our new purebred herdsire that is doing a remarkable job. With his first calf crop he amazed an incredible progeny proof of an 85lb birth weight average and a weaning average of 706, with an index of 105. Super Sport’s EPD’s rank him the top 1% for weaning, 2% yearling, 5% for yield grade, 3% for Carcass weight, 3% for FPI (Feeder Profit Index) and 10% for EPI (Efficiency profit index). Consistently he stamps his progeny with the same design and soundness of structure. So far he replicates himself ear regardless of the cow pedigree and type. With the maternal background, would expect his daughters to be highly productive.

A son of the widely used Connealy Consensus 7229. Our goal with Catalyst as well as Cartridge was to bring in the highly productive cow family in the Consensus line. This will be accomplished by mating them to daughters of our Connealy In Focus 4 sire. If the results from this first calf crop are an early indication, then the decision was right. Catalyst calves easily, in fact we used him on a set of first calf heifers this past year. Here is a moderate framed, easy fleshing, heavy muscled Angus that puts an outstanding look in his calves and an excellent disposition.

This bull brings to the table the additional carcass qualities we were looking for in this sire line. His 50K analysis puts him in the top 6% for Marbling. His first progeny had an average birthweight of 84lbs and a weaning index of 105 with an average weight of 711lbs. These were all from second calf cows. Will find his sons to have plenty of stretch and growth with outstanding carcass traits.

Sired by The Breeders Choice Futurity champion bull in 2013 and from a cow, 4308, that never misses and will go to transplant this year. Like all of her progeny, whether they be bulls or heifers, you know they will be at the top come weaning time. This could possibly be her best son. Power is built into this rascal for sure and as his picture illustrates, he looks the part. This bull can take a program to a whole new level of quality and production.

This bull is a stud. Deep, thick and good. Gained over 5lbs/day in the first 90 days. The result of a flush we did on a Connealy Lead On cow we bought from LaGrand Angus a few years back and Connealy In Focus 4. This was the only bull, but we did get some exceptional heifers. Without a doubt if this bull was in an Angus sale he would probably cost a lot more than he will in this sale. If we had a place for him here believe us, he wouldn’t be for sale. At present he is not recorded but can be if buyer wishes. EPD’s are an average of the sire and dam and all weights are actual not adjusted.

We bought this cow from LaGrand Angus Ranch’s dispersal sale. At that time she had a lifetime record of 103 for WW/Ratio and 102 for YW/Ratio. Since arriving here she has had one exceptional heifer and been successfully flushed three times for an average of 8 eggs per flush.

This bulls’ mother is an own daughter of Irish Whiskey, the hottest female sire in the breed. Analyze this bull for what he is and what he has to offer to a set of feeder calves. Calves that will have more bone, muscle and carcass yield than most. This bulls’ percentage is high in Angus genetics. Will work great on a set of black cows that need some fleshing ability and moderation in size.

EPD DEFINITIONS

1 | AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION | www.GELBVIEH.org | 303-465-2333 | AUGUST 2014

EPD DefinitionsListed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh

Association EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only. Maternal traits

Calving ease direct (CE): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving

daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.

Heifer pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.

30-month pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher

Meaning and Associated Risk Levels of Accuracy Values

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs) can be used to predict the average performance of a bull’s offspring compared to other calves in their contemporary group (a contemporary group being calves that were born in the same calving season, in the same year, herd, sex, and were managed similarly). EPDs are measured in the units of the trait, and show the differences in performance between animals. For example, if a bull has a weaning weight EPD of 80, and another bull in the same herd has a weaning weight EPD of 70, then bull A’s calves would be expected to be 10 pounds heavier at weaning than those of bull B.

It is important to remember that this number is just a prediction of performance. Actual performance depends on many factors such as environment, management, etc. This being said, an EPD is by far the most reliable indicator of an animal’s genetic merit due to the amount of information incorporated into the calculation.

The American Gelbvieh Association uses all available information to predict an animal’s EPD. This information includes: individual performance, pedigree, progeny and grand progeny performance, plus available genomic information. All this information is combined into one easy to use number that helps breeders make genetic improvement in their herd.

AccuracyIn an EPD listing, an accuracy number is often

published below its corresponding EPD. Accuracy is defined as the strength of the relationship between a prediction (EPD) and a sire’s true genetic value. In other words, accuracy is an indicator of the reliability of an EPD. Accuracy is improved by the number of records reported for an animal and with genomic information. For example, a three year old bull with 90 calves would have EPDs of higher accuracy than a virgin yearling bull. Accuracies range from zero to one, with numbers closer to one being more accurate.

This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher

percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.

Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Growth traitsBirth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in

pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

*Mature weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.
