1 First Steps with SIMATIC PDM

What are you going to learn? The following practical exercise will show you how simple it is to create a network configuration and subsequently process the devices in SIMATIC PDM. In this example, you will create a SIMATIC PDM configuration with devices. Later on, you are going to work with the sensor "SITRANS P DS" from the Siemens SITRANS P family. Detailed instructions will lead you step-by step through the creation of a network and SIMATIC PDM operation.

    1.1 Creating a Project

Starting the Program Start the program with a click the "SIMATIC Manager" desktop icon. An almost empty window opens with a toolbar in the upper section (the number of icons in the tool bar depends on whether you are using the integrated version or not).

Creating a Project Proceed as follows in order to create a project: 1. Select the menu command File > New. 2. Enter a name for the project (such as "PDM_1") in the displayed dialog box.

Verify that the "Project" and not the "Library" option is selected. 3. Confirm by clicking "OK".

Selecting the View in the SIMATIC Manager You can choose between the following views: The Component View is used for configurations in HW Config. The Process Device Network View shows the process devices grouped according to their network topology. You can configure process devices in this Process Device Network View. The Process Device Plant View provides a quick overview of the configured process devices. You can configure devices without any network assignment. NOTE: You can make a setting that determines which view is displayed when the SIMATIC Manager is opened. If you use HW Config when configuring, we recommend that the component view be made the default view. If you are using the standalone version of SIMATIC PDM or are configuring the networks in the SIMATIC Manager, you should make the Process Device Plant View the default view. To set the default, select the menu command Options > Settings. In the dialog box that is displayed, go to the "View" tab and select the desired view.

Adding the HART Modem and Assigning the COM Port 1. To add a HART modem, right-click the "Network" icon and select the menu

command Insert New Object... > HART Modem. The PC is automatically added and set up.

    2. Double-click the PC, select the COM port in the right-hand section of the window, and then right-click "Object Properties".

    3. In the dialog box displayed, go to the "Connection Data" tab and select the correct "COM Port" ("2" in our example).

    4. Confirm your settings with "OK".

Inserting HART Devices You can insert up to 4 devices per project using the standard version of SIMATIC PDM. If you need to configure more devices than that for a project, you will have to purchase the expansions required to do this. To insert the desired HART devices, proceed as follows: 1. Right-click the HART modem and in the context-sensitive pop-up menu select

the command Insert New Object. > HART Device. 2. The dialog box "Insert SIMATIC PDM device Object(s)" is displayed.

    3. In the "Name" field, enter the desired name for the HART device (in our example HART_1).

Note: If have an option of 128 tags or more, the change log is also active. All changes to a project are recorded in this log. In addition, a dialog box is displayed in which you are prompted to enter comments on changes. 4. Confirm your entries with "OK". The program adds a device named "HART_1

1" to the project. The device is inserted in the right-hand section of the window.

    5. Double-click the device that you have just created. The SIMATIC PDM application is opened. In the dialog box that is displayed, select whether you want to work as a "Maintenance Engineer" or "Specialist". Confirm your selection with "OK".

    6. The "SIMATIC PDM Device Selection" dialog box is displayed. Now select your HART device type. If it is not available, you can install the desired device at this time. To do so, click the Device Catalog button. In the dialog box that is then displayed, navigate to the folder containing the device catalog. Now select the HART device type.

    7. Confirm your selection with "OK". Note: This process may take a few minutes. All current device descriptions (.DDLs) will be loaded. Updates can be downloaded form the following Siemens website (address current as of May 2000):

Selecting a Sensor To select a sensor, proceed as follows: 1. Double-click one of the sensors which you have inserted (such as on HART_1

    1 in the example). 2. Select Sensors > Pressure > SIEMENS > SITRANS P-DS > Pressure > 16

Bar menu command to choose the appropriate sensor. Configure any other devices you have selected for your project in the same manner.

    3. After you have made your selections, confirm them with "OK".

1.2 Setting the Programming Device (PG)/PC Interface for PROFIBUS Communication When you create a PROFIBUS network, you should also make the settings for the programming device (PG)/PC. To do so, proceed as follows: 1. In the SIMATIC Manager, select the Options > Set PG/PC Interface menu

command (in the standalone version the PG/PC interface is located in the system Control Panel).

    2. Select the CP that is installed in your device. Note: The "Set PG/PC Interface" function is important if you want to create a PROFIBUS system and configure PROFIBUS devices. SIMATIC PDM can be used for HART systems as well as for PROFIBUS systems, although each system does require different hardware (for example, for PROFIBUS systems you will need a Siemens CP5611 or CP5511 card or another, equivalent card).

    3. Confirm your settings with "OK".

1.3 Configuring a Device Start SIMATIC PDM by double-clicking the device symbol in the SIMATIC Manager. In the dialog box that is then displayed, select the "Specialist" or "Maintenance Engineer" option. Confirm your selection with "OK". The SIMATIC PDM logo is now displayed.

SIMATIC PDM is now opened for the HART device that you selected. The values displayed in the right-hand section of the window are not "current" values but come from the DDL that you selected. To obtain the current values for your device, select the Device > Upload to PG/PC menu command or click the corresponding button in the toolbar.

Caution: Before downloading data to a device, you should connect the software to the HART device via the HART modem and upload the data currently in the device to your PC. To do this, select the Device > Upload to PG/PC menu command or click the corresponding button in the toolbar. The on-screen values are replaced by the actual values for the device. In the status bar, the status changes from "Not connection" to "Connected". If you edit these values, their status changes from "Initial value" or "Uploaded" to "Changed". To transfer the data to the sensor, select the menu command Device > Download to Device or click the corresponding button in the toolbar. All previous sensor data will be overwritten with your edited data. Therefore, be sure to verify the correctness of all data before you transfer it to the device.
