Sergei Fedorov's ex-manager convicted of fraud By Katrease Stafford, 5:16 p.m. EDT September 3, 2015 A former Grosse Pointe Shores man who swindled ex-Red Wings star Sergei Fedorov out of $43 million -- and millions from dozens of other unsuspecting victims -- was convicted in Florida today of 15 counts of fraud and two counts of making a false statement on a loan. Joseph Zada, Fedorov's ex-financial manager, was charged in 2013 with scamming 28 investors, including Fedorov. Federal documents show that Zada was also found not guilty on one count of making a false statement on a loan. Fedorov ,45, won three Stanley Cups and a Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player while a Red Wing from 1990-2003. Zada swindled the money by pretending to be a rich and successful businessman with ties to Saudi Arabian oil ventures. Zada told potential investors that he could quickly turn investments into large profits. He hosted extravagant parties, drove luxury cars and kept expensive homes in Grosse Pointe and Florida, according to federal documents. Zada used his victims' money to pay for his lifestyle, according to the government. Fedorov filed a lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court in 2009, accusing Zada of embezzling the money over an 11-year period. In May, the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Zada, ordering him to pay $112 million for selling fake investments to the victims, including Fedorov, a horse trainer, a plastic surgeon and several firefighters. Fedorov met Zada in 1998, the same year he signed what was at the time one of hockey's most lucrative contract's ever -- a $38-million, 6-year deal. Fedorov invested money with Zada but their relationship quickly soured. Whenever Fedorov inquired about the money, Zada "intentionally lied," according to the lawsuit, and provided him with false information and other "deceptions." Zada and Fedorov struck a deal that called for Zada to pay Fedorov $60 million but he never paid. Zada is set to be sentenced Nov. 20 in West Palm Beach. He faces up to 20 years in prison. Claude Lemieux to play in alumni game vs. Red Wings James Jahnke, 1:28 p.m. EDT September 3, 2015 It might make your skin crawl, but you wouldn't have it any other way, right? Claude Lemieux, perhaps the most unpopular athlete in the state's history, told Bleacher Report that he'll play in the Detroit Red Wings vs. Colorado Avalanche alumni game before the NHL teams' outdoor game in February in Denver. "I'm looking forward to it," Lemieux told reporter Adrian Dater. Lemieux, of course, rearranged Kris Draper's face with a dirty hit in the 1996 playoffs, accelerating the teams' superb rivalry. It's at the 1:15 mark below: He the splendidly turtled when Darren McCarty came after him the following season. Enjoy: Expect many more Avs and Wings to confirm their participation as the game draws nearer. Detroit Free Press LOADED: 09.04.2015

Red Wings' Brendan Smith will have to battle for a role Helene St. James, 9:38 p.m. EDT September 3, 2015 Deep into the NHL off-season, Helene St. James takes a look at individual Detroit Red Wings and assesses expectations for the coming season. Today's focal point: Defenseman Brendan Smith. Looking at 2014-15 production: 4 goals, 9 assists, 13 points in 76 games; no points in five playoff games. Looking at money: Signed through 2016-17, with a salary cap hit of $2.75 million. Actual salary for next season is $3.25 million. Looking back: Smith, 26, played with a variety of partners last season, looking his best when he gained veteran Marek Zidlicky as a cohort at the trade deadline. Smith never lacks enthusiasm, and he remains a work in progress as a young defenseman with what is now two-plus NHL seasons to his credit. Last season took a downturn at the end, though, when Smith made a boneheaded error in the penultimate game at Montreal, when he touched the puck in play while on Detroit's bench. Then, a day later, he sounded like he wasn't sure that the penalty call was 100% correct. Always on a short leash with former coach Mike Babcock, Smith was benched the last game of the season and supplanted by playoff novice Alexey Marchenko for the first two games of the postseason. Looking ahead: Smith should be highly motivated to come to training camp and battle for a lineup spot, because newcomer Mike Green has pushed Kyle Quincey into the third pair, leaving Smith and Jakub Kindl to fight for a regular role. There also are prospects knocking on the door, making it feasible that Smith ends up being traded. Smith would do well to keep his game simple and not try to do the risky things he got away with in college and the minors. Detroit Free Press LOADED: 09.04.2015

Zetterberg excited about newborn son, healthy summer Gregg Krupa, 7:44 p.m. EDT September 3, 2015 Detroit — The newborn son of the Red Wings captain is named Love. But it is not quite how it looks. It is like one of those throwback surnames in English for babies, like maybe Caleb and Noah, which make a bit of a comeback from time to time. Except it is Swedish. “I can understand the confusion, if you see the spelling in an American way,” said an obviously proud papa, Henrik Zetterberg, of his 14-day-old son, Love. “But it’s Swedish. It’s pronounced LOU-vee here, and in Sweden its LOU-vah. “We knew that if it was a boy that Love was going to be the name, early. So, it’s an old Swedish name, starting to get a little popular again.” And, yes, the stalwart-on-the-ice Zetterberg was nervous, especially as the time drew near. “If you ask anyone, I think probably everyone is nervous the first time,” he said with a smile. “But, everything went well. Both Love and Emma are doing really well. “It was pretty cool. First of all, we spent the whole summer here in Detroit. It was the first time we did that, and really enjoyed it.” As he begins his 13th season with the Wings, the sixth year of a 12-year deal, Zetterberg turns 35 on Opening Night against the Maple Leafs and Mike Babcock. Zetterberg has one Stanley Cup, 786 points (296 goals) in 836 regular-season games, and 119 points (56 goals) in 132 playoff games. He said he was pleased with some change in his offseason routine. “Yeah, I could go harder this summer,” he said. “Not so much rehab as last summer. So, I’m excited. I had a good summer working out, so hopefully it translates out on the ice.” And, from his perspective as captain, Zetterberg agreed it is a different season, with Babcock gone and Jeff Blashill behind the bench. “Blash has been coaching half of the guys in here, so it should be an easy transition,” he said. “Obviously, he coached under Mike, too, and he’s been in the Red Wings system for a while, so I don’t think it will be that big a difference for us. “You know, we obviously want to thank Mike for the time he had here. But I think, for both him and us, that it was time.”

Zetterberg also said he is enthusiastic about the two big additions to the roster, Mike Green (three years, $18 million) and Brad Richards (one year, $3 million with possible bonuses totaling $1 million). “He’s the kind of defenseman that we didn’t have,” Zetterberg said of Green, who is the second-highest scoring defenseman since 2008 and a right-hand shot. “It’s a nice addition for us. “And, also, Richards has been around for a long time and he knows what it takes to go all the way and win, and it will be nice to have that veteran presence in the lineup.” Nyquist pleased with 4-year deal Gustav Nyquist is happy. A new four-year deal (reportedly worth $19 million) and stability with a franchise for which he wants to play add up to satisfaction and, in the case of the 26-year-old from Sweden via the University of Maine, gratitude. “Obviously, I want to thank the owners and the management for believing in me and signing me to four years,” Nyquist said. “It’s a process you have to go through, but I always wanted to be a Red Wing and I’m excited.” Nyquist upended the concept of a sophomore slump last season, with 54 points (27 goals) in 82 games. It was a bit off the blistering pace the previous year, when after staying in Grand Rapids at the start of the season, he exploded for 28 goals in 57 games. While clearly pointing toward 30 goals, Nyquist said he is actually looking for a little improvement defensively this year. Richards, Green have stalls Dressing stall positions are not set in stone. But, currently, Green’s nameplate is to Niklas Kronwall’s left and Kyle Quincey’s right, along the wall that has eight stalls for defensemen. Richards’ stall is next to Zetterberg’s. The two are alone on a short run of wall before the hallway to the tunnel to the rink. Neither Richards nor Green participated in informal skates at Joe Louis Arena the past two days, which is not unusual. Players often skate near their residences or hometowns until training camp. Report: McCarty, Lemieux to play in alumni game The Detroit News staff 7:25 p.m. EDT September 3, 2015 Darren McCarty and Claude Lemieux will play for their respective alumni teams when Avalanche and Red Wings play Feb. 26, according to reports. Lemieux said he was suiting up for the Avalanche, according to a report in The Hockey News. McCarty confirmed he'd be playing for the Wings' alumni team during an autograph session Wednesday, WXYZ-TV's Brad Galli reported. Lemieux, 50, is best remembered for cross-checking Wings' Kris Draper from behind during the 1996 playoffs, which resulted in the forward sustaining a broken jaw, nose and cheekbone. The vicious hit sparked a heated rivalry between the two teams, which culminated in a 1997 brawl pitting McCarty against Lemieux that was soon eclipsed by a fight involving goalies Mike Vernon and Patrick Roy. A rematch in 1998 at Joe Louis Arena erupted into another full-scale melee featuring Roy and Wings goalie Chris Osgood. Igor Larionov, Nicklas Listrom, Chris Chelios and Brendan Shanahan are among the Red Wings slated to play in the alumni fest. The Avalanche roster will include Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Rob Blake and Roy, according to the Denver Post. The alumni game is a prelude to the Winter Classic between the Avalanche and Red Wings on Feb. 27 at Coors Field. Detroit News LOADED: 09.04.2015

Red Wings' Henrik Zetterberg: It was time for a coaching change; sometimes new voice needed Ansar Khan on September 03, 2015 at 4:32 PM, updated September 03, 2015 at 6:18 PM DETROIT – Much has changed since Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg addressed the media on May 1, the day players cleaned out their lockers following another early playoff exit. The Red Wings have a new coach, Jeff Blashill, and made a couple of significant acquisitions in defenseman Mike Green and center Brad Richards. And Zetterberg became a father. All of this excites Zetterberg as players prepare for the start of training camp on Sept. 18 with informal practices at Joe Louis Arena. "There's a lot of guys in here who've been through the same stuff for many years," Zetterberg said Thursday. "I think now with the additions of Green and Richards, and the new coach, it's given us a little fresh start. Obviously, it's going to be a different voice behind the bench and sometimes you need that." Zetterberg clearly felt it was time for a change after 10 years under the hard-driving, abrasive Mike Babcock. "I want to thank Mike for the time he had here, but I think both him and us probably decided it was time," Zetterberg said. He wasn't surprised Babcock bolted for an eight-year, $50 million deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs or the enormous buzz the entire process created. "I kind of figured that out, that he was moving on and obviously the media attention all along was big," Zetterberg said. "But for us players who weren't playing – we were kind of on vacation already -- we didn't really get that effect of it, but I heard from the guys who were around here still that it was a big deal." Zetterberg is confident of a smooth transition to Blashill, who coached the Grand Rapids Griffins for three seasons after serving as a Babcock assistant for one year. Zetterberg said free-agent acquisitions Green and Richards will provide a big boost. "Green is a right-handed shot, plays a lot on the power play, plays a lot of minutes and did a real good job in Washington," Zetterberg said. "It's kind of the defenseman we didn't have, so it's a nice addition for us. "Also, Richards has been around for a long time, knows what it takes to go all the way and win and it's going to be nice to have a veteran presence in the locker room."

Zetterberg said it was the first time he and wife Emma spent most of the summer in Detroit rather than Sweden and they enjoyed it. Needless to say, the highlight of the off-season was the birth of their first child, son Love, on Aug. 20, in Michigan. "Obviously, we were a little nervous when it got a little closer but everything went well," Zetterberg said. "Both Love and Emma are doing well." Why was he nervous? "Well, it was the first time going through that and I think if you ask anyone, everyone is probably nervous for the first time," he said. As for the name, Zetterberg said it's not pronounced how it's spelled. "We knew if it was going to be a boy that Love was going to be the name early," Zetterberg said. "It's an old Swedish name and kind of getting popular again. (I) understand the confusion if you see the spelling in an American way, but you pronounce it LOO-vee over here and in Swedish it's LOO-vay." Michigan Live LOADED: 09.04.2015

Old adversaries Darren McCarty, Claude Lemieux commit to Red Wings-Avalanche alumni game By Ansar Khan on September 03, 2015 at 2:22 PM, updated September 03, 2015 at 3:52 PM Darren McCarty and Claude Lemieux will have an opportunity to renew acquaintances on Feb. 26, during the alumni game between the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche prior to the Stadium Series contest at Coors Field the next night. Lemieux confirmed to The Bleacher Report's Adrian Dater that he will participate in the game, saying "I'm looking forward to it." McCarty reportedly confirmed to fans Wednesday at an autograph show that he will play as well. McCarty pummeled a turtling Lemieux at Joe Louis Arena on March 26, 1997, during one of the most memorable brawls in hockey history. It was retribution for Lemieux's check from behind on Kris Draper in Game 6 of the 1996 Western Conference finals, a hit that resulted in numerous facial injuries for the Detroit forward and earned Lemieux a two-game suspension. Lemieux, in an attempt to redeem himself, initiated a fight with McCarty during the opening faceoff at a game the following season. McCarty and Lemieux have appeared at autograph shows together in recent years. Michigan Live LOADED: 09.04.2015

Big defenseman Patrick Holway hoping to take Maine path to NHL career with Red Wings By Brendan Savage on September 03, 2015 at 12:12 PM The University of Maine has been good to the Detroit Red Wings. The school's hockey program played a big role in the development of goaltender Jimmy Howard and forward Gustav Nyquist, who both attended Maine for three seasons before embarking on a pro career in the Red Wings organization. Now, Patrick Holway is hoping to take the same path to the NHL. The Red Wings made the big defenseman from Boston their sixth-round pick (170th overall) and after one more season of junior hockey he'll begin his college career at Maine, where one of his teammates will be fellow 2015 draft pick Chase Pearson. "We talked about it a little bit," said Holway, 18. "We're excited. It definitely should be a good time. I love the environment there. I love the rink and the coaches are great. I thought they had a very personal connection with every player, made them feel comfortable and made them feel at home. "It is pretty cool, especially having players like Nyquist and Jimmy Howard come out of Maine, too. It's just a good little connection we have and it would be great to see everything work out." The Red Wings liked several things about Holway, who will play for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL this season after spending the last five years in the Boston Advantage junior program. • He's got good size at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds. • He's a right-handed shot, something the Red Wings have been lacking on the blue line for several years. • And he's an offensive defenseman who is a strong skater for a big man and moves the puck well. "He played at a lower level in Midget hockey in Boston, so he might need a little time," said Tyler Wright, the Red Wings director of amateur scouting. "But he's a big kid that can skate; he's got good hockey sense. He's kind of got the full package; he just hasn't played at a high level. "We would have been devastated if we couldn't have gotten him in the seventh so we stepped up on him in the sixth." Becoming better defensively is one of Holway's goals during the next few years. "I need to get stronger, get a little more physical so I can really go into the corners and get the puck up to" the forwards, Holway said. "I really want to succeed in every aspect.

Page 12: Detroit Red Wings Clips 9.4.15redwings.nhl.com/v2/ext/DRW_Clips_PDF/DRWClips090415.pdfDetroit Red Wings Clips! September 4, 2015 Detroit Red Wings PAGE 2 Sergei Fedorov's ex-manager

12

I want to put up points. I want to shut down top-end players. That's really what I'm looking forward to doing." Holway has been a lifelong Boston Bruins fans but that changed the minute the Red Wings called his name at the draft in Tampa. "My allegiance might have to change a little bit after this," he said with a laugh. "It's a great feeling, really. It's every kid's dream. You want to get drafted into the NHL let alone a great organization like this. It's Original Six. "It's almost too good to be true." Michigan Live LOADED: 09.04.2015

Red Wings outlook: Petr Mrazek looks to lock down starting goaltending job in first full NHL season Ansar Khan on September 03, 2015 at 6:03 AM, updated September 03, 2015 at 6:10 AM (Another in a series of player profiles prior to training camp Sept. 18-21.) Petr Mrazek Position: Goaltender Age: 23 Height/Weight: 6-2/183 2014-15 stats: 29 games, 16-9-2 (W-L-OTL), 2.38 goals-against average, .918 save percentage, three shutouts; (playoffs) seven games, 3-4, 2.11 GAA, .925 save percentage, two shutouts. Career stats: 40 games, 19-14-2 (W-L-OTL), 2.23 goals-against average, .920 save percentage, five shutouts; (playoffs) seven games, 3-4, 2.11 GAA, .925 save percentage, two shutouts. Contract status: One year remaining at a cap hit of $737,500. He'll be a restricted free agent after the season. 2014-15 in review: He went 9-2-1, with a 2.06 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in 13 appearances for Grand Rapids. ... Three of his five shutouts with the Red Wings, including the playoffs, came against Tampa Bay, the highest-scoring team in the league. ... Was pulled four times in a span of 12 starts with the Red Wings (Jan. 18 vs. Buffalo, Jan. 29 at Tampa Bay, Feb. 11 at Pittsburgh, March 29 at the Islanders). He went a combined 3-0-1, with a 1.68 GAA, in the four starts following those games. ... Had a .667 save percentage in shootouts (stopped 12 of 18 shots). ... Season-ending shutout in Carolina cemented his status at the starting goalie for the playoffs. 2015-16 outlook: Mrazek is poised for his first full NHL season and has the inside track on the starting job, which he won from Jimmy Howard at the end of the regular season. He was strong in the playoffs, giving the Red Wings a chance to upset to the heavily favored Lightning. He had a few bad outings the second half of the season but showed good resolve by bouncing back strong in his next start each time. He exudes confidence and has a mental toughness about him. Mrazek's puck-moving ability is a tremendous help to his defensemen, an edge he has over Howard.

14

Howard will be highly motivated to win back his job but Mrazek won't give it up easily. If the competition is close, new coach Jeff Blashill might favor Mrazek, who he coached for much of the past three seasons in Grand Rapids, winning the Calder Cup in 2013. Mrazek is in line for a significant salary bump after the season. Key question: Will Mrazek establish himself as the No. 1 goalie and become the team's workhorse? Michigan Live LOADED: 09.04.2015

Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen ‘feels good so far' in bid to return from concussion By Chuck Pleiness, POSTED: 09/02/15, 7:01 PM EDT UPDATED: 1 DAY AGO DETROIT >> So far so good. That’s how it’s going for Johan Franzen and his progress to return to the game after suffering a season-ending concussion in January. “It feels good so far,” Franzen said Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena while taking part in an informal practice with Detroit Red Wings teammates. “It’s probably too early to tell until I start playing games. I’m going at it hard – a little bit too much, actually – just to see that I can take it. “My threshold is getting higher and higher every week,” Franzen added. “I try to listen to my body and push as hard as I can, but if I have setback I kind of let off a little bit and then start from scratch again and see how much I can take. It’s kind of just been building up ever since the playoffs.” Franzen has suffered multi concussions in his career, the last of which occurred last season after a blind-side hit by Edmonton’s Rob Klinkhammer. He finished the game, but began experiencing concussion-like symptoms the next day. “I haven’t talked to (the doctor) in a while,” Franzen said. “I kind of want to figure things for myself for a while first. Like I said, try to go really hard at it, get enough ice and see where I’m at. “That’s that plan,” Franzen added when asked if he’d be ready for the regular-season opener. “If I keep feeling the way I am now, I think I’ll be ready.” Franzen was skating with the team during the first round series loss to Tampa Bay in the playoffs. He said he’s yet to consider his career possibly being over because of last season’s setback. “I haven’t been there yet, really, in my thoughts,” Franzen said when asked about the possibility of retiring. “It’s been so many tough years here the last 2-3 years with injuries. I just want to have a good year. I want to decide on my own when I quit. I’m excited to try to get back and to have a good year. “It’s great, especially being where I was there in mid-season,” Franzen continued. “Not being able to get out of bed. It makes you think, it really makes you appreciate being able to do what we do.”

Page 16: Detroit Red Wings Clips 9.4.15redwings.nhl.com/v2/ext/DRW_Clips_PDF/DRWClips090415.pdfDetroit Red Wings Clips! September 4, 2015 Detroit Red Wings PAGE 2 Sergei Fedorov's ex-manager

16

Franzen still has to be cleared to participate in training camp when on-ice drills in Traverse City start on Sept. 18. “It’s kind of been building every week and I’ve had setbacks pretty much once a week when I’m going really, really hard at work and I have to go back to bed for the rest of the day,” Franzen said. “But like I said the threshold is getting higher and higher, so it’s improving. “Right now it’s more like getting really exhausted out there and see if you can take that,” Franzen added. “Of course the next step is the battle level and getting hit. The main issue has been the exertion when I get really tired. That’s when my head has been shutting down. So if I can take that I think I can take a few bumps. His teammates are happy he’s back on the ice. “It’s awesome, great to have him back,” Niklas Kronwall said. “He’s happy, he’s working hard, he just wants to play, so I’m happy for him. That was our biggest acquisition, maybe, getting healthy Johan Franzen back. “I think we all have had those thoughts regarding his health,” Kronwall added. “At the same time I hope we can all just let that go and let him do his thing and hopefully he feels good and feels comfortable out there and can come back to his old self.” Franzen has been limited to just 128 regular-season games over the last three seasons. “I think he’s just preparing to get ready for a season,” Justin Abdelkader said. “He looks like he’s trained really hard this summer. I don’t know if we’re watching every step but we’re watching, just kind of getting feedback from him, but it sounds like he’s feeling pretty good. I guess we’ll see as we go into camp but he’d definitely be a big bonus if he could be healthy at the start of the season.” Macomb Daily LOADED: 09.04.2015
