PBIS on the Playground: Feedback Scenarios This document provides scenarios related to providing feedback to playground supervisors. It is intended to be used as a practice activity when teaching how to provide or improve feedback to playground supervisors. This document provides scenarios related to providing feedback to playground supervisors. It is intended to be used as a practice activity when teaching how to provide or improve feedback to playground supervisors.

Scenario #1During an observation of Ms. Smith, playground supervisor, the school counselor noted the following on her observation form:

Good movement in varying patterns Little conversation with students and other supervisors Has playground expectations lanyard on Provides mild correction calmly when students begin throwing wood chips Uses the walk with me strategy when student was repeatedly bothering a group of

students – talked with the student the entire time (about 3 minutes) Ratio of interactions was 23 positive interactions to 10 corrective interactions

After the observation, the school counselor met with Ms. Smith to debrief the observation. Here is the summary of the feedback that provided to Ms. Smith:

Great job! You kept moving in varying patterns on the playground. I appreciate the way you handled the situation when the students were

throwing the wood chips.

Scenario #2During an observation of Mr. Simmons, playground supervisor, the principal noted the following on her observation form:

Tends to stay in one spot, near the playground equipment Always friendly and talking with students, great interactions! Tends to provide mild corrections as questions e.g., “You don’t want me to have to

tell your teacher you were saying those things to your friends, do you?” Clear that students really like Mr. Simmons Joined a game of tag briefly – students loved it! Ratio of interactions was 53 positives to 5 corrections

After the observation, the principal met with Mr. Simmons to debrief the observation. Here is the summary of the feedback that provided to Mr. Simmons:

You have great relationships with the students! They seem to really like and respect you. It seems like everyone had a good time at recess. The

one thing that could make recess even better would be if you moved around a little more, maybe in a varying pattern so that you can cover

more of the playground and so that students do not know exactly where you are going next.

Scenario #3During an observation of Mrs. Spilker, playground supervisor, the behavior coach made the following observations:

Greets students by name Constantly moving around the playground in the same pattern (figure eight between

the playground equipment, field, and basketball court) Wearing her lanyard with the school-wide expectations and the script for mild

corrections – used it once when providing a correction Used the Panther PURRs slips to acknowledge students who helped to clean up the

trash on the playground – used language from matrix when delivering slips When providing corrections, pulls the student aside and talks quietly to him/her Ratio of interactions was 87 positives to 13 corrections

After the observation, the behavior coach meets with Mrs. Spilker and provides her with the following feedback:

It was such a pleasure to see you in action today. You are a wonderful playground supervisor. I cannot thank you enough for all you do for our

school. I just love that you are always here for us. Thank you!
