EQUINE NUTRITION

Jordan Miles

Equine nutritionists typically have a background in general animal science but specialize in the needs of horses. They understand how digestive systems differ for horses with a variety of lifestyles - from racehorses to work horses - since their diets and nutritional needs may differ depending on the kinds of activities in which they're involved. Nutritionists detect horse health based on body condition and physical signs and then they have to design diets and feeding schedules; they use math and statistics to measure out how much feed a particular horse may eat in a sitting.

The average salary of equine nutritionists depends on many factors, such as the location of their employment, educational level, and type of work. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the median salary for veterinarians was $84,460 as of 2012. The median salary for animal scientists in that same year was $61,680.

Ag SkillsAnimal Testing

Fact #1 Fact #2

Fact #5Fact #4

Fact #3

Its a law that Scientists have to test all products on animals to make sure they are safe for humans and safe for sale.

Some scientists are using synthetic skin to measure how drugs travel through the skin. Other scientists use human cell cultures to test how drugs work. This is as an alternative to testing on the animals itself.

Some animal tests take months or years to conduct and analyze (e.g., 4-5 years, in the case of rodent cancer studies)

Using blood from human volunteers to test for the presence of fever-causing contaminants in intravenous medicines can save hundreds of thousands of rabbits each year from traditional “pyrogen” tests.

About 99% of the human genes are similar to that of the chimpanzees as well as a few other monkeys. Thus, experimenting with these animals gives scientists an idea about their possible reaction in the human body. As it is immoral to experiment on humans, chimpanzees and other monkeys remain the only option.

Teachers say?

Even though I do not have Jordan in class this year, I have seen her shine outside of the classroom. She exhibits tremendous professionalism wherever she is whether she is showing her horses, helping out at the farm, or simply walking around school. She also has a tremendous talent for judging horses on my horse judging team. She brightens up a room when she walks in because she always has a smile on her face. I am so glad I had the privilege of knowing Jordan this year and I cannot wait to see what she accomplishes next year! Ms. Wood

Jordan, I have loved having you as a student this past year. You are always willing to lend a helping hand and have no problems pitching in regardless of what is asked. Your dedicated, hard working and passionate about Agriculture as well as FFA. My big recommendation for you is to know what you want and ask questions. There have been times when you have waited to apply for something or get involved with something and it's past a "deadline." Knowing what you want to get out of the year could potentially help you better organize to be sure you get involved with everything you want before you graduate. Huge School is so short as it is and there is no going back, make sure you have no regrets :) I know you have great things ahead of you, and big goals to accomplish, I have faith that you can do anything you put your mind to!! Mrs. Ferguson

Jordan is very talented and intelligent. She is creative and can produce great work. I'm excited to see her growth as she learns more about her passions and goals. She has great potential and I hope to see her live up to that potential. Shane Hildebrand
