Slim Jim’s story may start as a story of abandonment but it’s a story of hope, compassion and overcoming odds. The day he arrived at the Humane Society of Pinellas he was so weak he couldn’t stand or even lift his head. He was covered with sores, bones protruding and fleas had drained him.
Slim Jim stole hearts with his big trusting eyes and that wagging tail while medical staff assessed what to do first. While there was little hope he would make it, we rushed him to AA Animal ER Center. Slim Jim never complained, he seemed grateful for the attention as he received lifesaving care through a blood transfusion, fluids, intensive care and medications. Once back at HSP, Slim Jim continued to heal and gained weight; eventually strong enough for heartworm treatments. It was no surprise this gentle giant became a staff favorite, always courteous, never tugging on his leash, loving to be petted and thankful for every day.
On December 21, 2014, just in time for Christmas, this special boy found his forever family, a family willing to feed him multiple times daily to manage his glucose levels and insulinoma. He is now happy and healthy in his forever home.
Come meet our other companion animals that are waiting to make families and homes complete. See who is available now at HumaneSocietyofPinellas.org or visit us at 3040 State Road 590, Clearwater, FL 33759.

July 10th started out like any other Thursday morning as staff came in to feed and clean the animals. But today was different: someone had tied a dog to one of our fences, and it looked like someone had beaten her. The little mastiff mix’s face was swollen and she was not putting weight on her left front leg. She was obviously in pain but her sweet and friendly demeanor shined through. We named her Jane.
Our medical team, led by our veterinarian Dr. Artman, examined Jane and sent her to St Pete College for X-Rays. Both of the bones in Jane’s foreleg were broken. We splinted the leg and treated her for one complication after another as her leg healed, including kennel cough, an ear infection, and a skin inflammation. Finally she got surgery to repair a cherry eye.
One day our water treatment vendor happened to notice Jane in her kennel. He immediately fell in love with her satellite ears, soft brown eyes, and sweet disposition. He saw her several times as he came back for work. Finally they were officially introduced and it was love at first sight. Jane was finally adopted in December, after almost 5 months of medical care. Jane has a little Chihuahua companion now and is happy in her new forever home.
Five local talents sang their hearts out at Singing For Their Supper, October 2nd 2014 at Ruth Eckerd Hall. James Ludeman stole the show with his rendition of “Me and Mrs. Jones.”
Nearly 200 guests attended our annual awards dinner. Our Golden Paw Volunteer Award went to Jan Williams for her 20 years of dedicated service and tireless hours donated to HSP. The Golden Paw Community Award was given to Michael and Jennifer Rogan for their selfless commitment to homeless pets in need within our entire community as they support multiple organizations that align with their passion.
Thank you to our sponsors, guests and volunteers that made the 2014 Annual Dinner a great success.

JENEVIEVE - A SENIOR’S SECOND CHANCE No matter what age an animal is they can always find a second, third, or even a fourth chance at a
happy home here at the Humane Society of Pinellas. 13 year old Jenevieve came to our shelter because
her owners were moving and unable to take her with them. She came with her health problems
including a history of urinary tract infections and kidney issues. Besides being beautiful with a soft coat,
she had an endearing little chirp she used to talk to you. She had her stories to tell.
After medical attention and a prescription diet, this sweet senior cat was ready for a loving home. She
was adopted quickly, but then found herself once again back at HSP with her medical issues being too
much for the family.
In September 2014, Jenevieve, now called Jenny, finally found the perfect home she deserved all along
and is doing great. Her new family said they appreciated our help in finding them their perfect kitty.
Jenevieve can now live out the rest of her life warm and cozy with a loving, forever family.
CHANCE & CHLOE – FOSTER SUCCESS! In August 2014, Citrus County Animal Services contacted us concerning a dog with a staggering
litter of 10 puppies. The new mom was a petite dog unable to sustain her whole litter. We jumped
to action to try to give five of these puppies the best possible outcome, but knew we would be
taking a risk raising them away from mom at only 4 days old. Puppies are usually weaned from
their mothers at around 4 weeks old. After being placed in foster care, two of our little miracles,
Chance and Chloe, persevered through illness and the weaning process. Their foster mom cared
for them around the clock with feedings every few hours. With their sweet nature, the pups were
adopted on Halloween. Thanks to the hard work of our amazing Foster parents and staff members,
animals like Chance and Chloe are given a chance at life that they may not have had elsewhere.

COMMUNITY NEWS
TNVR is now legal for Pinellas County’s community cats! TNVR stands for Trap – Neuter – Vaccinate – Return and is the most efficient, humane, and least costly method of stabilizing community cat populations. Community cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies, and ear-tipped prior to being returned to their environment to live out their lives under the watch of a caregiver.
Members of MEOW Now, a new organization founded by representatives of HSP and other community members, worked closely with county officials to craft an ordinance that will benefit Pinellas.
Will it work? We believe so! The concentrated TNVR efforts of Hillsborough County agencies over the last decade have led to a significant decrease in the number of cats coming into Hillsborough shelters. Here in Pinellas, there are estimated to be between 92,000 and 173,000 feral and free-roaming cats.
HSP offers spay & neuter services for community cats. Visit HumaneSocietyofPinellas.org to learn more.
