PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 358 - 13 Apr 2002 Paving the way for pharmacist prescribing in Canada The recognition of pharmacists as prescribers is the next step in the evolution of pharmacy with the aim of providing improved continuity of patient care and medication management in Canada, says the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacy (CSHP) Task Force on Pharmacist Prescribing. However, the Task Force cautions that ‘merely adding pharmacists to the list of professionals with traditional prescribing authority might simply exacerbate existing problems with medication use in society’. It suggests that pharmacists in Canada should follow the example of those in the US, and form collaborative arrangements with physicians in order to gain the right to prescribe or make complex decisions about drug therapy. Moreover, the Task Force believes the following steps should be undertaken in the consideration of prescribing authorisations by pharmacists or pharmacy departments: thorough self-analysis of current professional practice to ensure optimisation of all aspects of pharmaceutical care consideration of the goals and objectives of pharmacist prescribing development of co-ordinated process, through collaboration with physicians, that authorises pharmacists to prescribe. The Task Force notes that this process can be a ‘useful approach for the health care facility pharmacist or pharmacy department to consider when pursuing prescribing privileges within their scope of practice’.
