In this role, CTEP provides a forum for dialogue, collaboration and technology transfer among stakeholders in the transportation engineering community in Canada. Our website is: www.ctep.ca CTEP is pleased to offer a short course, Pavement Design, Evaluation, Management and Rehabilitation” ________________________________________________________________________________________________ This course provides an introduction to the design, evaluation, management, construction and preservation of pavements. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) 1993 pavement design procedure, as used by many agencies in Canada is covered along with an introduction to the AASHTOWare Pavement ME mechanistic-empirical method. The primary design, specification and construction factors that contribute to the long-term functional and structural performance of pavements ranging from parking lots to municipal roadways, airports and major highways are discussed. The course will focus on flexible pavements (asphalt concrete and surface treatment) but will also cover rigid (concrete) and permeable (asphalt, concrete and paving stone) sections. Once a pavement is constructed, it is desirable to maximize its life through timely and cost effective maintenance and rehabilitation. This course provides details on methods and means to evaluate both the functional (distress, friction, smoothness) and structural (load bearing capacity) of the pavement. Commonly used surface distress evaluation procedures are outlined along with the methods and equipment used to determine friction, smoothness and load/deflection capabilities. This information is then used in a pavement or asset management system to assist in determining when and where to initiate maintenance and rehabilitation activities. An introduction to common pavement maintenance procedures (crack sealing, patching, concrete repairs, etc.) is provided along with more significant rehabilitation procedures such as hot and cold in-place recycling, overlays, etc. Through a series of case studies, positive and negative features are presented to give the participant a good understanding of what we can do better to ensure the cost-effective use of transportation investments. Course Instructor: David K. Hein, P.Eng.

Mr. Hein has been involved in the design and construction of pavements ranging from parking areas to major highways and airport runways over the past 35 years.

He is the past chair of the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Pavements Standing Committee, World Road Association Flexible Pavements Committee and is currently Represents Canada on the Asset Management Committee.

David has led or significantly contributed to the TAC Pavement Design and Asset Management Guide, Synthesis of Asset Management Practices for Canada and Synthesis of Best Practices for the Repair of Potholes and has completed training courses for over 10,000 participants across North America.
