ARTIST BIO

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii internationally acclaimed artist Patrick Ching quickly became known as Hawaii’s Nature Artist and one of the world’s most gifted bovine and nature artist. Ching has spent a lifetime devoted to the preservation of Hawaii’s native wildlife and grew up exploring the valleys and shorelines of the islands. He is a unique visionary, whose surreal, and colorful style have made him a master of a brand of art that is recognizable and uniquely his own. Traversing Hawaii’s most remote rainforests, Patrick carefully studied native plants and animals which most of the world has never seen and after years of volunteering with various wildlife organizations, Patrick became a ranger for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife refuge on Kauai. For many years Ching traveled to the northwest Hawaiian Islands spending months at a time in field camps working to protect endangered species such as monk seals, seabirds and turtles. In 1985 he was dropped by helicopter into the Hanawi rainforest on slopes of Haleakala Volcano, Maui, to observe and paint the only nest ever found of the world’s rarest bird the Po’ouli. Ching spent weeks in constant wetness watching the birds twelve hours a day to create “Soul Provider” the most accurately detailed painting ever done of this species which became extinct in 2007. In 1996 Ching was selected from a pool of international artists to create Hawaii’s first Wildlife Conservation stamp. He was also the youngest artist ever to design the cover of Hawaii’s phone books and he has created some of the states most well known commissioned art pieces. People travel from all over the world to visit his gallery “Naturally Hawaiian” and to attend his art classes that produce remarkable results in just three hours. As part of Ching’s commitment to public awareness and education, Ching produced several award winning books including; Sea Turtles of Hawaii, The Hawaiian Monk Seal, Native Animals of Hawaii, Endangered Animals of Hawaii, Exotic animals in Hawaii, and Hawaii’s Beautiful Birds. He has also created several well known children’s books the Story of Hina and the Tale of Rabbit Island. In 1996 Ching opened Naturally Hawaiian from the ruins of and old gas station in the heart of Waimanalo and in 2008, Patrick Ching Art Gallery was opened at Princeville, Kauai. Artists, tourists and students interested in taking one of Ching's art classes or wanting to shop for handmade local art’s and crafts and share in Waimanalo's famous country atmosphere have found their way to his doorstep. Coming in January of 2009will be the Naturally Hawaiian Art Series and in February will be the addition of local style café called Sweet Home Waimanalo that will offer Hawaiian BBQ.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCAL ARTIST PATRICK CHING SELECTED TO REPRESENT HAWAII IN THE ART MILES MURAL PROJECT

Waimanalo, Hawaii – Patrick was recently selected as Hawai'i's Master Muralist for the International

Art Miles Mural Project in support of the international decade of peace. His role is to oversee the creation of many educational murals that will be connected to create miles of art to decorate an actual

size pyramid in Egypt in 2010.

The first of its kind in the world, The Art Miles Mural Project provides an innovative opportunity to capture the essence, heritage, environment and spirit of our global village through the creation of

large scale murals.

Beginning in 1997, ‘Healing Hearts through Art‘ has grown from a single mural painted in a Bosnian orphanage into 12 miles of murals painted on canvas with acrylic paint. Along the way, the Art Miles

Mural Project has grown from being a simple activity into therapeutic healing through self-expression.

More than 40,000 participants from over 100 counties have painted murals - in settings as diverse as refugee camps, hospitals, schools, town centers, parks, and conferences. Each mile of murals,

including the mural painted by the participants at the Africa Forum 2006, will be displayed in Egypt around the pyramids in 2010 - at the art exhibit of the century.
