Past Continuous
We use the past continuous to talk about
the actions that were happening at a certain
point in the past. Actions that were in
progress but not finished.
For example…
Mike started work at half-past eight
yesterday morning.
He finished work at three o’clock in the
afternoon.
So we can say that Mike worked from 8:30 to
3:00 yesterday
What was Mike doing at
10:00 yesterday morning?
He was working in the
office.(He started at 8:30 and finished at 3:00, so at ten he was in the middle of work)
We make past simple
like this:
• Affirmative • (S + was/were + [Verb+ing])
• “She was sleeping.”• “They were singing.”
• Negative • (S + was/were + not +
[Verb+ing])• “She wasn’t sleeping.”• “They weren’t singing.”
·Interrogative (Was/were + S + [Verb+ing]+?)
“Was she sleeping?”“Were they singing?”
